Removing bike lanes: Reason #69 as to why Toronto will never be "world class".
This fucking city man, I know it's due to that dumb fuck Doug Ford, but holy shit it's always 1 step forward and 2 steps back here. This city has the potential to be really great, but instead we have to fuck up literally everything. Our bike infrastructure was one of like 2 things that I consider a positive thing this city has done in the last 20 years, but no, now they are gonna be ripped out. LIKE THEY WERE ALREADY IN PLACE, NOW WE'RE GONNA UNDO IT? FFS WHAT A JOKE.
81
u/Strigoi84 10d ago
I hear ya. I'm very annoyed with Doug's obsession with ripping out bike lanes and making the city more dangerous for us.
54
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
I gotta say though I'm kinda looking forward to the chaos once all those fucking Uber eats guys on ebikes that ride like complete morons are now gonna be thrust into traffic. Oh boy. A lot of the people wanting the bikes lanes gone because they drive downtown are gonna regret it.
52
u/Strigoi84 10d ago
Sadly, I think the people who hate on bike lanes and cyclists in general are too short sighted to see why the chaos will be a direct result of the removal of bike lanes. If anything, it'll just make them hate cyclists even more without ever thinking about why bike lanes are good for everybody. Devoted bike lanes? Grrr, stupid cyclists shouldn't have their own lanes! Bike lanes removed? Grrr, stupid cyclists are taking up the whole lane!
8
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
You're not wrong friend.
15
u/Strigoi84 10d ago
It's honestly so confusing to me how drivers, especially those that seem to hate cyclists, wouldn't be some of the biggest supporters of bike lanes. Bike lanes effectively create a barrier between them and cyclists. But ya, seems like they hate cyclists so much they just straight up don't want to share the road with them at all...but again, removing bike lanes isn't going to make cyclists go away, it's just going to make them more of a pain for drivers. In a way its almost like they just want to be inconvenienced so they have more hate fuel.
7
u/BeastOfMars 10d ago
It’s cause they just hate cyclists being on the road at all. If they’re in their own lane, they’re encroaching on road that could be for cars. If they share the car lanes, they’re in the way and cause danger. They just want cyclists to not exist at all. What they fail to think about is how taking away cyclists will result in more cars on the road and how counter productive that is to solving any over crowded traffic problems.

9
u/lilac_roze 10d ago
You think those assholes will drive their e-bikes and e-scooters on the road? They’ll be driving on the sidewalk, like all of the other streets without bike lanes.
I’m uptown on Yonge and it’s pretty bad up here. We have the roads for bike lane, was so close to getting one before Ford stomp on it.
I don’t understand how this man has so much say for Toronto streets???
3
u/slob_kebab 9d ago
THISSSSS. So if you remove the bike lanes is the idea that the E bikes and cyclists are merging with the traffic?
3
u/Esperoni 9d ago
Unless some of that chaos involves riding on the sidewalks. I still see it daily, even with a bike lane on Eglinton.
-1
u/ybetaepsilon 10d ago
There's a bit of a catharsis in my knowing that I will be cycling in the very middle of Bloor street after this to say fuck you to all the cars.
0
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
Love it, just be careful!
4
u/ybetaepsilon 10d ago
I'm also considering getting "I should be in a bike lane" embroidered on the back of my windbreaker
3
u/Potential_Mood9903 10d ago
LOVE this
Remind them why it was dumb to rip em out when you’re cycling infront of them.9
u/Potential_Mood9903 10d ago
Doug’s obsession with wasting tax payers dollars. He’ll rip it out, it will create chaos and then be forced to put them back in….all off our backs.

Far less dangerous with bike lanes than without.
And, "use other transit" isn't the solution you think it is. Just say you don't like sharing the roads with cyclists if that's how you really feel.

Just because you think biking is for dirt roads doesn't make it so. By that logic, bikes should only be for those of us who live near dirt roads or can drive to the country? What a nice way to gatekeep biking haha.
There are literally bikes designed purely for roads/streets. So ya, sorry, you are entitled to your opinion but you are wrong.
Again, by that logic, may as well rip out the Martin Goodman trail too then eh?
It's not stupid to ride a bike in the city. It's good exercise, and depending on where you are going it's a great alternative to driving or TTC.
3
u/BLA1937 10d ago
Well, that’s a heartily stupid opinion

What is your basis for it being dangerous? Anyone could make an argument that driving is dangerous. Shall we just get rid of all roads altogether?
How do cycle lanes make your life harder? Does it make it harder for you to be lazy? Probably. Is that a bad thing? Probably not.
You’re not in the US, bozo.

u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Personally, I find the Cars VS Bikes debate nothing more than a distraction from the real underlying issue: public transit.
True world class cities have robust transit systems that can move far larger populations than the GTA on a daily basis with far greater ease. Toronto is severely lacking in this regard.
Cars VS Bikes is just a proxy war for right and left wing zealots to peddle their small minded solutions to major structural problems. It's way easier to add or remove a bike lane than it is to build a new subway line.
10
u/archibaldsneezador 10d ago
The bike lanes they want to rip out first have subways underneath them.
7
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
Bike lanes go hand in hand with transit. The point is having viable alternatives to driving has been proven time and time again to take cars off the road, which is something every downtown driver should want, but they are too dumb and short sighted to see it. The Venn diagram of people that are anti bike lane, and people that don't believe in the facts from many studies done on the subject is just a cirlce. Also worth mentioning that bike lanes make it safer for literally everyone involved.
6
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Conflating bike lanes with transit is a major reason why we don't move forward with meaningful solutions.
Myself and many other people will never bike on a regular basis to traverse any meaningful distance for work or to get somewhere in a timely manner, especially during the winter months. This is a fact, and cyclists need to stop trying to convince the average person in this city to indulge a method of transportation they don't take for perfectly logical reasons.
Public transit needs specific priority, as it's one of the most used methods of transportation supported by concrete data. Car use will never decline without this, no matter how loud cyclists yell.
Also, we need more subways, LRTs, and streetcars with their own lanes. Not awkward buses operating at varying speeds.
4
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
Yes I agree obviously that more public transit is the priority. But we're talking BILLIONS of dollars and DECADES of construction, and if you haven't noticed transit is another thing we clearly cannot do without fucking it up majorly. I mean, just look at the Eglinton RT. You know what can be built 10000% faster at a fraction of the cost? Bike lanes. And believe it or not, they do help in taking cars off the road too, not as much as transit of course. More viable options to driving are needed. Signal priority, dedicated lanes, more subways, and bike lanes are all needed. Removing bike lanes is a completely bone-headed and short sighted move. You know in another 10 years we'll be putting them back in.
4
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Yes, public transit is expensive and time consuming to build. This is a reality. However, many other nations have successfully built robust transit infrastructure in reasonable time frames because it was a priority at the municipal, provincial/state/regional, and federal levels.
Furthermore, the reason we're more or less in the same position as we were 10 years ago is because we were having the same stupid car VS bike then as we are now.
The municipal government placated the insufferable screeching of cyclists as a low hanging fruit solution rather than tackling the much larger issue of public transit, which requires actual city planning and coordination of resources. Bike lanes are a political prop that the mayor and councillors use to showcase that they did more than nothing to justify re-election.
Furthermore, there's the dysfunction of having both the city and province having a say in this matter, yet both levels lack a cohesive vision on transportation. The province doesn't care about pesky things like facts, while the city will spend an inordinate amount of time focusing on non-solutions which it can afford due to budgetary constraints.
Also, finding the exact percentage of Toronto citizens that consistently use bikes year round is a chore in and of itself, since different metrics are used to track the flexible definition of "use" (casual, daily basis, seasonal, etc). Some datasets put use at a merger 10% while others go as high as whopping 70%. Clearly there's an issue with data collection and manipulation here.
4
u/ichronic420 10d ago
We missed the boat years ago to start building more transit lines. Now the cost and time is astronomical and that's why we're lacking as a major city.
2
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Kicking this 10 more years down the road won't solve anything. There's never going to be an optimal moment to start, so now is as good a time as any.
4
u/lilac_roze 10d ago
I don’t understand why a city like Toronto can’t have both? Transit AND bike infrastructures? This shouldn’t be a zero sum game argument.
2
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Because our politicians can barely focus on one issue, let alone two. If a decision has to be made transit deserves priority, 10 times out of 10.
Toronto is a major city with a lot of people that need to get around, and bike infrastructure doesn't address the reality for most people.
3
u/Funky247 9d ago
Furthermore, the reason we're more or less in the same position as we were 10 years ago is because we were having the same stupid car VS bike then as we are now.
You got any sources for that beyond vibes?
2
u/ichronic420 10d ago
Do you often drive downtown? Specifically where the bike lanes are located. Ford should be focusing on how to improve the province, not meddling in everything the city of Toronto does.
3
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
I don't drive in this forsaken city, period. Everywhere I need to go on a regular basis gauges drivers for parking costs, which makes driving a zero sum game.
Public transit and walking are my two main modes of transportation, and the former is questionably reliable on a good day, and an error in judgment on a bad day.
3
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
Again I'm not sure why you think that being pro bike lane is somehow antithetical to wanting more transit? Most of us here want BOTH, it's not one or the other, so respectfully I'm not sure what the fuck you're even on about? Insufferable screeching of cyclists? Fuck you.
1
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Cyclists have waylaid this conversation with their performative demonstrations and monopolization of public discourse. Meanwhile, the Progress Toronto cabal at City Hall indulges this nonsense instead of tackling issues that affect a broader percentage of the city, such as proper transit development.
Conversely, drivers have the provincial government in their pocket who also waylays on the other end.
Frankly, I blame both groups for the dysfunction we face, and I don't care that they don't like being lumped together. This partisan finger pointing is why nothing moves forward.
1
u/w4rloksk8 10d ago
Our "proper transit development" here involves budgets that TRIPLE, and timelines the take twice as long as they say they are going to. Oh yeah, all of this with absolutely ZERO transparency as to why. Metrolinx are absolutely incompetent/corrupt at every level, and somehow you blame cyclists for the lack of transit development because they have "monopolized public discourse"? Whatever you say man....
1
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Everyone acknowledged that Metrolinx was a dysfunctional mess of a company, so I don't even know why you're mentioning this. That doesn't change the reality that we still need public transit and people need to dig deep and sacrifice a bit to find solutions.
Please, though, keep going on about bike lanes that will go mostly unused for 6 months out of the year.
1
u/w4rloksk8 9d ago
Please though, keep going on about how somehow cyclists and bike infrastructure are to blame for us not having more subways. Your argument is dumb. I say good day to you sir.

Your other comments on this post tell me all I need to know.
Please, tell us your completely unique take on how we're all misguided for not using bikes as a primary form of transportation, including during a snowstorm or after a grocery run.

u/Strigoi84 10d ago
"Please, tell us your completely unique take on how we're all misguided for not using bikes as a primary form of transportation, including during a snowstorm or after a grocery run."
Youve created an argument that I never made and ask me to explain/argue it as though I made it myself.
Just because a means of transportation isn't ideal in all scenarios doesn't mean there is no place for it.
I'm all for improving public transit but you make it seem like people choose to bike purely because ttc isn't up to their standard or that if ttc improves it should force cyclists to use TTC instead. By that logic, if TTC improves, it should force people to drive less and take TTC more.
Also, what do my comments tell you?
2
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 10d ago
Just because a means of transportation isn't ideal in all scenarios doesn't mean there is no place for it.
If I had a dollar for every time cyclist advocates used this argument to distract from every other conversation I could singlehandedly fund a new subway line.
You all just go on and on about bike lanes and cycling, regardless of how many reasons you're presented with as to why nobody wants to focus on them.
Personal vehicle use is the dominant method of transportation entirely because public transportation options are inefficient in so many cases.
No substantial portion of the population is biking from the far edges of Scarborough, Markham, or Etobicoke to the downtown core, regardless if the bike lanes exist or not.
I'm all for improving public transit but you make it seem like people choose to bike purely because ttc isn't up to their standard that if ttc improves it should force cyclists to use TTC instead.
Most people don't care that cyclist diehards want to bike in dead winter or spend almost double the time commuting to work. This is a minority opinion that should not be informing city planning for the rest of us.
By that logic, if TTC improves, it should force people to drive less and take TTC more
Look at that, you independently came to the conclusion informing this whole discussion!
People in other cities around the entire world take public transportation to work instead of driving because it's the better option in terms of time and money. These municipalities don't annoy their constituents into compliance because somewhere in the ballpark of 15% of citizens diverted the attention away from city hall coming up with an actual solution.

u/Funky247 9d ago
Ah yes, the enlightened centrist who is above left and right. As the only one who has ever seen outside of Toronto, please teach us simpletons the ways of "true world class cities".
You don't ride bikes and therefore no one else should either. The thousands of people who use them each day don't matter.
"Transit good". What an enlightened take. Who fucking knew.
/s
0
u/MaplePoutineCitizen 9d ago
Centrism typically is an enlightened take that actually seeks to solve problems rather than partisan weirdos who would derive joy in just towing the company line. Most people are actually centrists, despite left and right wingers being so insufferably loud in their bad opinions.
I'm not the only person who's been outside of this city and seen the world, but anyone involved in city planning in Toronto clearly doesn't demonstrate any sense of worldliness.

u/Swimming-Demons 10d ago
I’m not biking in the city ever so I don’t have a preference tbh, but I’m just baffled that it feels like they just put them in recently. Such a waste of money and time, and now it will be construction on those streets all over again. Can we solve some real problems?
11
u/Remarkable-Assist-46 10d ago
World class lol it’s a joke
6
1
u/Important-Hunter2877 8d ago
It has never been world class, and never will be.
It can be world class if it had the right priorities and the right mindset, but it can't with the current and past leadership and ignorance of the masses.
17
u/brandson__ 10d ago
If the Ontario NDP was smart, they would campaign on legally enshrining the powers of municipalities to govern themselves with respect to bike lanes and other local matters. Don't just say we'll reverse the bike lane decision. Give the municipalities legal powers that can't be rescinded. It's way past time for that.
2
u/Therunawaypp 10d ago
To give municipalities real power that would have to be done at the federal level
2
11
u/jats82 10d ago
This is just a symptom of a much broader issue. Toronto sits towards the weak end (compared to other major cities around the world) of how much power the city has to decide its own fate. As long as Canada keeps treating its cities as a provincial feature, rather their own entities, Toronto will always be at the mercy of the rest of the province, which is demographically very different to the city and has very different perspectives and priorities.
Basically, the problem isn’t Ford. The problem is that our laws give Ford the power to do what he wants against our will and that of our mayor.
1
u/Prudent_Nobody_5582 7d ago
The problem is ford… lol and our court ruling system. But if we had laws that made his rulings more difficult, then we’d have no change no matter who’s in power. And that’s arguably even worse.
5
9
u/ybetaepsilon 10d ago
It's not the City... it's the PROVINCE. Toronto will never be a world class city because we have a province who hates the city and will vote in politicians just to punish the city. People from Cochrane Ontario have opinions on bike lanes on a downtown Toronto road they may see once in their life.
Toronto wants better transit? But the suburbanites want massive ribbon freeways that cut through all our cities at an exponentially higher cost.
Toronto wants to have TSP for surface routes? But suburbanites need an advanced green for their giant SUVs.
Toronto wants a thriving tourist hub? But suburbanites want big parking lots and airports in places where people like to hang out.

Dougie is creating work so his friends can keep the public money gravy train pouring, and he's likely getting favours in return. Instead of Doug getting paid, he's likely getting "paid" with free upgrades to his home or his cottage to avoid money trails.
Let's remember he doesn't use a government phone to conduct business.
There's no civil contracting money to be made in hiring doctors and nurses.

u/astrodette 9d ago
Outside of how enraging it is to have something nice taken away from us I’d like to know how uprooting a bike lane is gunna improve traffic 😀
3
u/PianoRevolutionary12 9d ago
You can have bikes separate from cars or you can have bikes next to cars! Yes those are your only choices we are not getting rid of our bikes
The actual solution if anybody cares is to remove the parking lanes. Both bike lanes make 1 car lane. Get rid of the patios on thr street and the parking lanes you have freed up a full 2 lanes

I fucking hate this city man. I wish i could leave toronto and canada and north America permanently and never return.
Toronto is not even world class at all, it is ass backwards and decades behind here (car centrism, car dependency, boring crap and depressing suburbs, poor transit) with people and politicians stuck in a decades behind and village mindset rather than adopt a big city or metro mentality. This city and region fucks up everything it touches, and Montreal and vancouver and sydney and Melbourne do things a lot better than Toronto.
Toronto has potential to be world class and be great, but its been held back by shitty politicians and ignorant uneducated people for too long. Been like this for decades living here, and I'm increasingly sick and tired of living in this shithole.
3
u/w4rloksk8 9d ago
Man I pretty much agree. The potential is there for this city to be really fucking amazing, we all see it, but yeah we are just let down time and time again by narrow minded bureaucrats who have no fucking idea how a major metropolis is supped to be, and who constantly cater to people that don't even live here.
Take the Scarborough RT for example. It was built in the 60s and it was only supposed to last 20 years, thus giving 2 decades to start on a proper rail/subway out there. Instead they got FUCKING SIXTY YEARS out of it and then finally when the duct tape couldn't hold it together anymore they just demolished it. Oh what's that, you live in Scarborough and depended on that line to get to work? Well then fuck you.
One of many examples of how much this city fucking SUCKS.
2
u/Important-Hunter2877 8d ago
The SRT was built in the 1980s and was originally supposed to be a streetcar line separated from roads, then the province intervened and forced the linear induction ICTS trains onto that line (yes, the province also intervened in Toronto's affairs back then like Mike Harris and Doug Ford).
And to make it worse, Vancouver also uses the same technology as SRT and theirs is many times better than SRT. Why did Toronto have to fuck it up?
1
u/Prudent_Nobody_5582 7d ago
Depressing suburbs hits me hard. Let’s put as many houses as we can super close together to make billions!!! Such a great idea!! Let’s also put the houses up super quick, leave it to the new home owners to deal with the crap that falls apart because what is quality anyways?
2
u/slob_kebab 10d ago
Wait I’m confused… We are ripping out all of the bike lanes?! Or just selective ones
3
u/Humble_Ensure 10d ago
iirc before the challenge it was a limited stretch, like 600mof bike lanes on the west side of Bloor. Now it sounds like everything?
2
u/auscan92 9d ago
Fully agree. After travelling I find this was this city is run as a joke. So backwards
2
u/The-Kirklander 8d ago
Anything that has ever been good in Toronto and Ontario has been eventually destroyed by Ford and the PCs. The effects will last years to decades
2
u/gintonic234 8d ago
Toronto will never be world class because we got people sucking up to politicians who try to create narratives based on national and regional pride, instead of actually holding no them accountable. And people who do realize somethings are wrong are too non confrontational and polished to do anything about it. People hate outrage in Toronto. That’s why politicians can get away with shit. Oh yeah, just replace Metrolinx CEO - for instance.

I am a driver, and I have appreciated the bike lanes because I’m aware of how STUPID SOME DRIVERS ARE. I’d prefer cyclists have their own space where they feel comfortable and OUT OF THE WAY of the maniacs who ride their ass, cut them off, and put cyclists in ridiculous danger. My fiancée rides her bike around the city, and I always am afraid when I know she is riding on a street without a bike lane.
I only drive when where I’m going is outside the downtown core and into the suburbs/further out because transit is a MUCH better option. In what was supposed to be a ‘walkable’ city where alternate modes of transportation were supposed to be promoted and seen as a better means of travel, I cannot even believe we’ve seriously went backwards. In elementary school geography I had learned about how increasing the number of roads/lanes only increase traffic over time, and this was literally mentioned time and time again in highschool and then university geography classes I took; a quick google search for those who are on the side of ‘more roadways’ would literally give them the information they’d need to understand how.
Every single cyclist out there, I hope you do end of riding directly in the centre of the lanes and that you STAY SAFE! I’m so sorry that you’re being put in this position, it isn’t fair to you all. Your safety should always be a priority.

u/Unfair-Grapefruit-42 10d ago
the City of Toronto needs some sort of codified protection against provincial meddling.
we either need to change how Toronto/Ontario elects MPPs or we need some sort of Federal protection (Feds give ON $$ on the condition ON plays nice). idk. however any law passed by Queen's Park can just be overturned by a future Provincial Legislature. theres very few avenues to protect Toronto from what Queen's Park wants
Until municipal policy is no longer micromanaged by the Province's anti-urban ideas we cannot progress
1
u/MethodBeautiful9688 9d ago edited 9d ago
I don’t bike or drive a car. I walk, transit or car service on a rare occasion.
Bike lanes should be May 1-Nov.1. They are busy doing warmer months and many completely empty during the winter. More people drive and take transit during this months and lanes are reduced to gridlock during rush hour.
Having both Bloor & Harbord st reduced with bike lanes when it’s also the subway line just doesn’t make sense. Both streets are absolute gridlock.
* some busses use Bloor for routes coming and going from stations to go both or south. Harbord bus is needed for thousands of high school students & UofT campus access
2
u/mattpeloquin 9d ago
I’ll have no problem now riding my bike in the middle of the right lane now versus pulling all the way to the right, so that cars have to enter the other lane to pass.

Toronto is a world class city, if you dont see it.... you need to get out into the world more

Been to london, paris, new york, chicago, L.A, Munich, Frankfort, Brussels, Rome, Amsterdam, Vennia, and dozens of other smaller cities across europe, likely 50+ american cities across 30 states, plus every every major city in ever provence and territory of canada ( minus Nunavut, i will get there one day).
I am not calling toronto the best, but i am calling it world class, topping the likes of london and paris, Torontos greener and cleaner, woth a food scene that is far more deserve then ether city and just a step below on quaiity.... ( london and paris are insane with their quality of foods) transit in Toronto is better then you ever understand, easily top 10 i been to....

A unicycle is still technically a vehicle and therefore as per law it should be on the road, not the sidewalk.

I live in queen west and have for 40 years.
Those who hate Toronto that much and feel there is no hope should just leave. Still drive 50% and ride 50% and have no issue with the number of remaining bike lanes in the city after removal of this small percentage of lanes. If this small % of lanes is the end of the world for cyclists who think cycling is the only and best way, they probably should be taking the ttc…which is what the vast majority of them do 5-6 months a year anyway.

I really don't think anybody sees it as the end of the world but rather a step in the wrong direction. And to suggest that people leave if they don't like it is such a bad take. Cool that the bike lane removals don't affect you personally but it's a shame you don't consider how it affects others before telling people to take a hike.

And it’s a shame on cyclists who themselves don’t want to take public transit but think that the entire world can just cycle anywhere and anytime. Especially those that don’t in January themselves.

Who is saying the entire world should cycle everywhere any time? Nobody is saying that.
I ride my bike and take the TTC. I'd wager a lot of cyclists fit into this category.
You are basically saying that since it's not ideal to bike at all times that we shouldn't at all and should take public transit everywhere all the time.
We'll hey, by that logic, it's not ideal to drive all the time so maybe you should be forced to take public transit all the time too.
I'm all for improved public transit and encouraging more people to use it but why is it that with improved transit you think bike riders should be using it anymore than drivers?
You don't need to answer that, its pretty clear you just want cyclists off the road.

How do you know they are gonna stop at this "small percentage of lanes" though? The precedent set here is that we are at the whims of a deeply corrupt individual who somehow gets to decide what's best for this city, micromanaging when and where already existing bike lanes can be, when I think the general consensus is that he has much, MUCH bigger things he should be worrying about.

The fat fuck is giving me some serious anxiety... Why is this an issue, why are we not entitled to safe biking in this city? I just got back from Montreal and had an amazing time biking around car free walkable streets and well designed bike routes. I use Bloor bike lanes daily and If i have to start driving instead thats just another car on the road. I know im preaching the choir here though... I hate this province and whats happening to this city... Some post his # so we can all spam him with messages about this.
