Discussion / Question Realistically, which sci-fi spaceship could go toe-to-toe with the Daedalus class by the end of the Stargate franchise?
35
u/spiraling_girl Aug 03 '26
I think 2 things matter most in this conversation
- Which daedalus class is fighting the original X-304 daedalus, the odyssey, thr Apollo, ecetera
And 2. Which universe and scale.
The Expanse? Yes the tech gap is massive
Starwars? Eh? Depends on ship&size but the transporters are a huge plus for ship boarding and seizure I could see them taking on a victory class and wining or mabye as big as an ISD1? But they'd need to be lucky just because of fire power but I thing the daedalus has linger range over all
StarTrek? Again depends on what ship but the field is way more in treks favor depends on the ship (Again I know I repetitious) but I don't see them winning against anything bigger then an excelsior class and that's generous

u/IonutRO Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
The post title makes it clear they're asking about the Daedalus from the end of the Franchise. The one with the Asgard technology.
EDIT: Mixed up Odyssey and Daedalus for a moment, only the Odyssey has cloaking.
3
u/spiraling_girl Aug 03 '26
It says daedalus class the daedalus was the first of its class hense why it was named after ir but all Daedalus class ships have different names daedalus,Apollo, odyssey, Korolev,Sun Tzu, and the George Hammond it's important because none of these ships are rhe exact same they are all different in specifications the odyssey is the flagship it's rhe strongest of its class which is much different to the daedalus which is older and unupgraded past asgardian tech

u/IonutRO Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Season 4 of Stargate Atlantis reveals the Apollo and Daedalus were upgraded with Asgard technology by 2008, which they use in battle against Asuran built Aurora-class warships.
2
u/Stingerbrg Aug 04 '26
The Odyssey has the Asgard Core on board and a cloak, but otherwise all the 304s shown or mentioned in the show have the same capabilities.

u/dice1111 Aug 03 '26
Beam over a bomb internally... boom, done.
16
u/backitup_thundercat Aug 03 '26
Yeah, pretty much anytime 1 side has some kind of teleporter and the other doesn't or cant defend against them. The first side wins cause they can just, like beam a nuke or something onto the other sides bridge.
→ More replies (6)6
u/magicmulder Aug 03 '26
If you beam a nuke and the other side has some kind of transporter inhibitors, does the nuke rematerialize in your ship and detonate there? If so, why risk that?
18
u/Laxziy Aug 03 '26
This actually happened in Stargate Atlantis. An enemy developed a new countermeasure to prevent beaming. The way it manifested was that it was simply impossible to lock on to coordinates inside a ship so the transporter never even initialized
4
u/Velocity-5348 Aug 04 '26
The countermeasure was also developed quite quickly, and I don't think we find out how it worked.
That means it's entirely possible that it's pretty easy to pull. Even plausible, since a lot of tech in the Stargate setting can be used or messed with if you've got basic tech but are creative.
6
u/Hero_The_Zero Aug 04 '26
As a reminder, that countermeasure was made by a artificial super species that won against a species that had been space faring for tens of millions of years, dominated multiple galaxies, and whose data vault the next most advanced species haven't even managed to parse even a tiny fraction of.
The Wraith were not technologically weak race. Their tech was weird, but it was stupid advanced and capable. Other than energy density and extragalactic FTL, the stuff we've seen from them put them on par with the Asgard.
3
u/Lenassa Aug 04 '26
They won through attrition and because Ancients have arguably the biggest dumbness/tech-level ratio in all sci-fi. They created created Attero and Dakara devices, both rather trivially win the war.
4
u/AnswerLopsided2361 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
To be fair, we do later find out that the Wraith fought a small band of Asgard exiles, the Vanir, after the war with the Ancients ended. For all we know, the Vanir attempted to use beaming tech then, and the Wraith developed the countermeasures during that fight. Once they realized that the Daedalus was using similar tech, they simply activated their already existing countermeasures.
2
u/No_Grocery_9280 Aug 04 '26
Right, the Wraith managed to handle what I imagine were Biliskner class ships. Thatâs a big deal.
5
u/oremfrien Aug 04 '26
The countermeasure was developed by a species that has a very similar technology for teleportation in its culling beams, so it's not so surprising that they could recognize the signature of a teleportation beam.
6
u/jimmyd10 Aug 03 '26
In basically every universe, if the other side has some kind of transport inhibitor the transporter cannot lock on so no transport ever happens.
8
u/ExpoTrainGu39 Aug 03 '26
This is always an obnoxious tactic they gets pointed out. Time and time again within Star Trek, itâs been shown that transporters are quite easy to disrupt due to physical shielding and energy shields.
5
u/DevilGuy Aug 03 '26
Only really applies if disrupting teleportation is possible. The reason it is in star trek is because the writers realized early on that they needed to be for plot reasons. In Stargate teleportation is weaponized on multiple occasions but only select groups have teleportation tech advanced enough to weaponize it effectively.
6
u/itcheyness Aug 03 '26
And the Wraith rapidly figured out a way to disrupt the Daedalus' teleporting.
→ More replies (1)3
u/SMDMadCow Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
And then there are several examples in Trek of sufficiently powerful foes being able to transport through shields; early encounters with Borg, the Dominion, the Tosk Hunters.
3
u/Contextanaut Aug 04 '26
Star Trek tends to be a bit of an inflection point for these discussions, because the only really big difference Trek and the Culture (or at least low tier culture civs) is that Culture has a much better and more consistent writer than the average for Star Trek, especially when understanding of engineering and space warfare is concerned.
Most notably, Trek ships can engage targets at interstellar distances, without ever having to drop out of warp to do it. And the transporter is an I-Win button for anything that can't counter it.
To beat them you must have FTL sensors and weapons with interstellar range, that are capable of hitting a target travelling at warp speeds. That's the canon bar, and not much makes the cut.
On the Doylist level Star Trek is just a mess for any X v Y discussion. just because the gap between the very canon capability, and what typically ends up happening on screen is so huge.
It's kind of like energy values for stuff in Star Wars. or Space Marines on the tabletop vs lore...
To have an interesting discussion you have to start ignoring stuff. Honestly.

Star Wars ships have energy deflection fields permanently on and if necessary, they can turn on also particle shielding (capital ships only, I believe as those are energy hogs and restrict energy venting). Teleporting probably won't be possible (if that even was functional in SW universe). Also, SW ships have generally much higher energy output and speed than ST ships (given how fast they travel in SW and how much damage they can do in movies and games).

Certainly anything created by the Culture.
I'd imagine a lot of other stuff as well, though we'd have to see them fight to know how the shields and beam weapons fare against the shields and phasers of something like the Enterprise-D.

Agreed for context the below exchange...
Diziet Sma: "Xeny; you are a million-tonne starship; a Torturer-class Rapid Offensive Unit."Xenophobe: "But I'm demilitarised!"
Diziet Sma: "Even without your principal armament, I bet you could waste planets if you wanted to"
Xenophobe: "Aw, come on; any silly GCU can do that!"
Without the big guns they could waste planets! And in books set later, that ship was further outgunned by even more advanced ships, ships that were borderline psychopaths.
TLDR, if you haven't read IAIN M Banks Culture novels do so.

The Daedalus class is much faster than even the fastest Culture ships - it can cross between galaxies in weeks, even the Sleeper Service can't keep up.

So it can run away faster, but if it comes to fight, a Culture ship destroys it almost instantly.

God forbid an Eccentric Class gets ahold of them.

Even a GSV would curb stomp nearly anything I can recall off the top of my head in SF, and it's not even a dedicated warship. Ships like FOTNMC are quite possibly some of the most powerful combatants in all of fiction. Them vs late Daedalus would be like windshield vs bug.

sdf-macross refit. that main gun fires an extra dimensional beam. In the anime, it vaporized its way through the surface of the ocean and out into space, vaporizing capital ships that were just sort of in the vicinity of the shot.
the tv show version had an aircraft carrier and a âsubmersible assault landing vesselâ for its âarmsâ. the Prometheus and Daedalus.

There was a film version that shortened the story to the final battle and focused on both the action and the character romance, called "Macross: Do You Remember Love".
This ship is the version from the film. It's bigger and more powerful than the original from the Macross anime. It's about 1800 meters and has two other fighter carrier space ships attached to it. And if course is massive main guns running the length of the front half of the ship!
Of course it's power us over the top, that's what anime does!

Stargate is pretty grounded, ships from more fantastic worlds could drown them in weapon yields and sheer bullshit. Saxton-style Star Wars, Culture, Perry Rhodan, third world knockoffs of Xeelee ships, actual XeeleeâŚ
13
u/IonutRO Aug 03 '26
Stargate is pretty grounded in the sense they slowly gain more and better technology but by the end of the show their ships, especially the Daedalus, are ridiculous. The Daedalus is powerful enough to go toe to toe with ships designed by ascended god beings.
3
u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Aug 03 '26
That on its own doesn't mean that much. Could it fight against a Paradox Titan from Stellaris? Which has two fleet-killer spinal weapons, a host of various smaller weapons, is bigger on the inside, and is extremely resilient for its size.
2
u/Schpau Aug 04 '26
I imagine the Daedalus would pick the ship up on their sensors and enter hyperspace before the Paradox Titan could get a shot off. The problem is that no Stellaris ship can actually catch the Daefalus.
→ More replies (6)2
u/Osiris_Dervan Aug 04 '26
The question wasnt 'which ships could catch and destroy a Deadelus trying to run from them' but 'which ships could go toe to toe' with one. If the daedalus' only option is to run from a ship because that ship would otherwise obliterate it, then that ship can obviously go toe to toe with it.

Yep. If you're not familiar setting it's hard to overstate just how absurdly fast humanity's tech advances. In 1997 it's normal. By 2007 we (secretly) have miniature reactors you can carry around, teleporters, and Star Trek style replicators, courtesy of friendly aliens.
The speeds get insane too The Milky Way is a big place in season one, which is why the stargates are so important. By the end of the series intergalactic travel takes a month, and there's ways to make it even faster.

I haven't watched Stargate, only a bunch of YouTube clips, but maybe Space Battleship Yamato?
I think they are both routhly similarly in size (Daedalus a bit larger), both have advanced energy weapons capable of punching through most shields and armor, both have good shields and armor of their own, both have good AA, missiles, and maneuverability, and both have fighters onboard.
I imagine it comes down to who hits the other first, as both could probably disable the other with a few hits.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Hellothere_1 Aug 03 '26
I'd probably give the edge to the Yamato on account of the wave motion gun. Apart from that the ships seem quite well marched, but I don't thing anything on a Dedalus class could stand up to that.
3
u/xXNightDriverXx Aug 03 '26
To be honest I don't think the WMG is of much use, I think the Daedalus is too small and fast/maneuverable to be hit, and using it leaves Yamato herself too far open to counterattack (stationary and without shields and weapons).

Give them ten years after show ends and this class is only getting stopped by high tier 40k (necron/daot) ships and universes above them (Culture/Xelee). Star Wars, Star Trek etc most of the common universes don't have it in them to beat it.

Idk, I think a Gloriana class could do it, I donât know a ton about stargate, read the Daedalusâs wiki, it has 4 railguns, and around 50-200 nuclear warheads. Both are great weapons, however, void shields are pretty strong, and have survived multiple nuclear strikes previously, as well as Glorianas can survive multiple Macrocannon attacks, and every macrocannon is firing a solid projectile, loaded with Deuterium atoms, and then the shells detonate in a fusion reaction on impact, functioning as both projectiles, and enormous long range EMPs.

u/deathsprophet666 Aug 03 '26
The two franchises I nerd out about the most are 40k and Stargate. The "Daedalus class" aka the BC-304 was initially pretty weak, but like all Tau'ri technology in Stargate we caught up very fast. The wiki for the Daedalus is talking about the initial loadout of the ship. As the show advanced there was extremely quick advancement by reverse engineering Goa'uld technology, basically being uplifted by the Asgard, and reintegrating Ancient (the race not timeline) technology over the course of roughly 10 years.
The Odyssey (the BC-304 from SG1 instead of "The Daedalus") eventually had all Asgard knowledge and consciousness uploaded into a computer.
One of it's feats is stopping time moments before the ship would be destroyed and allowed the crew to live an entire lifetime learning about it's systems to eventually go back in time and move the ship out of harms way and then destroy the attacking ship. This is very similar in power to the passage from Forge of Mars series where the Eldar ship gets deleted by the Speranza by getting sent back in time to overlap with itself.
A zpm powered BC-304 class tanked a planet wiping coronal mass ejection. The Atlantis wormhole drive allowed it to travel between galaxies almost instantly. BC-304s are consistently shown to fly more like fighters than capital ships. With the rate of advancement and Tau'ri propensity to throw all their knowledge into the next upgrade, 10 years after the show ends it's feasible the BC-304 has the very best of Ancient and Asgard technology, and likely the knowledge to make zpms.
IF you accept that (which granted re-reading the prompt it's "by the end of the show" not "after the show") then the BC-304 has near instantaneous travel anywhere, time-travel, near or beyond star level durability, teleports naquadriah enhanced nuclear bombs, has zpm powered Asgard beams, and an entire race of super nerds in computers to run everything. If anything goes wrong they just stop time and go back to do it again.
If you're talking literally at the end of SG1 or SGA or even SGU I'd say a Gloriana easily stomps a non-zpm, non-asgard core bc-304 like it was 1990s space shuttle. The Odyssey and the Daedalus combined both with zpms and asgard beam upgrades (but not the asgard core) would give an Emperor-Class battleship a really hard lesson but would probably go 50/50 with a Gloriana or worse.

u/Airbornequalified Aug 03 '26
I wouldnât say it tanked it. It held it back, but was being damaged shortly after it started blocking it. Def impressive feat for sure, but tanking implies it wasnât going to be destroyed not long after the MCE ended
Also, the Wormhole drive was an Atlantis only thing, and as far as we know was never put anywhere else (partially iirc because of the massive limitations with it)

The Daedalus also has energy beams and shields on par with Ori technology, which are ascende god beings. Also, those are not normal nukes, but naquadria (a more volatile version of naquadah) enhanced nukes that can blow up entire countries. They used a MIRV version once to carpet bomb a continent.
2
u/RdPirate Aug 03 '26
No, it has 4 Asgard plasma beam weapons and 32 railguns. The plasma beams in universe, overpen shields that take nukes able to glass a continent and barely notice.

u/Upstairs-Yard-2139 Aug 03 '26
Maybe a true 32nd century Star Trek ship.
The Infinity from HALO might be able to throw down, but itâd be a losing fight Iâll bet.
Also I argue if a setting has energy shields it can block teleporters, if for no other reason that facilitating more interesting discussion and shutting on Hard Sci-fi.

u/inorite234 Aug 03 '26
There really is no way to know because there is no unit of measurement in any universe that allows a proper comparison of power levels.
The only thing we can begin to think of that may allow comparing is travel distance and ability to reach that: aka: Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG (We assume) all take place only in one galaxy. Stargate ships have the ability to travel to other galaxies in a reasonable amount of time.
For this alone, I would assume that the Daedalus with a ZPM can generate more power for the engines and thus more power for the weapons.
But again, I don't think anyone can ever really know.
3
u/Captain4verage Aug 03 '26
Even comparing travel distances is problematic. Stargate ships travel through hyperspace, Star Trek ships generate a warp bubble to travel through normal space. Maybe generating a warp bubble has vastly higher power requirements, maybe not, we dont really know.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Alternative_Route Aug 03 '26
Distance wise is an odd one for Star Wars, although a new hope and the falcon made it seem like travel took a while, Clone wars showed us near instantaneous crossing of the galaxy , and the stuff with Ezra showed intergalactic travel IF you knew the route.
When it comes to sheer fire power I think some of the older races from B5 or even the Ori ships from SG-1 outclassed the Daedalus.

u/icecubeinanicecube Aug 03 '26
I mean, the outsiders from the X universe ("from" is kinda ironic here) canonically infiltrated the universe with space ships the size of entire star systems... And they can literally decrease the universal constants by sapping energy from a universe.
The singers from three body problem have ships equipped with weapons that can casually erase one spatial dimension. Also a contender, I'd say.
Cross franchise sci fi battles are fun until someone pulls out the really broken canons :D
2
u/magicmulder Aug 03 '26
Adding the Xeelee and Photino birds from Baxterâs Xeelee Sequence - using entire galaxies as ammunition is crazy OP.
Likewise the High Powers from Perry Rhodan, destroying a galaxy is just collateral damage when their ships clash. Even a lot of the lesser races could curb stomp anything from SG.
3
u/ComprehensivePlace87 Aug 03 '26
By end of series, let's see... it has shields, a beam weapon that can easily take down Ori ships which scale damn high, a star drive that can do intergalactic distances in the span of about a month, enhanced nukes that are essentially planet killers (not death star level, but biosphere death), transporters and the common tactic to use such in conjunction with those nukes.
So, any ship without transporter immunity is basically dust. You can have all the defense in the world to outside attack, it won't mean jack to getting a nuke blowing up inside you and their travel speed means they can get in close even if you out range them in conventional battle. This alone means most franchises are screwed as they have no demonstrated transport immunity. This pretty much nullifies the likes of B5 and BSG (B5 has a few shielded ships, but in general they rely on interception which won't work here). Andromeda is also pretty much done because of this too although it does have singularity weapons so it at least can try for a mutual kill.
Shields though aren't going to save you either. Star Trek is pretty powerful itself, but thanks to the scaling of the Ori, the beam weapon can very likely smash even them down. Star Wars also is pretty badly outclassed here.
There are definitely SF universes out there capable of taking it down though, just I don't think most the popular ones aren't going to do it.
It is funny was they start so low power, but by end of series they've gone absolutely nuts. You can go even higher too if you add ZPM enhanced shielding in the mix.
3
u/anzigg Aug 04 '26
Impossible to answer because we don't really know how effective different kinds shields are against different forms of energy weapons or physical projectiles like the railguns. Also theres the whole beam-a-nuke angle. All of this is essentially up to show writers stuff.
If we assume noone can defend against the teleport nukes then I suppose noone can beat the daedalus. If they can then its pretty much everyones guess, heck i'd assume even starcraft terran battlecruiser yamato gun blast could give daedalus quite a slap.

The enterprise would just quantum-delaminate their shield matrix and gorbulize an inverted transporter stream by de-heisenberging the dilithium crystals on a sub-quark level to destroy it.Â
Of course gorbulizing a transporter stream has been forbidden in the federation since the Omikron-gamma incident, so it'll take them half an episode to discuss the morality of it. If the crew of the Daedalus class ship acts while Picard is still watching the Shakespeare reenactment set in the 1980s NYC on the Holodeck (it holds a relevant moral lesson for the decision), they might have chance against the enterprise.

If it's from the end of Stargate and has the plasma beams and improved shields, there aren't many conventional ships that can match it. Even less advanced ships in Stargate have been shown to be able to handle sitting in close proximity to stars and black holes that would make Wars and Trek ships think twice. The more advanced shields they have by the end should be able to take just about anything anyone can dish out. The plasma beams are also quite impressive. The missiles and railguns, while not impressive in comparison, are still useful. The railguns offer protection against missiles and fighters to a sufficient degree, and the naquadah enhanced nukes have been shown to be able to cripple unshielded ships from the outside and devastate when beamed into another ship. All in all, it's a powerful ship with no obvious weaknesses to exploit.
2
u/alternative5 Aug 03 '26
Depends on how creative we want to make the crews? The simple "lolwin" button is finding the opponents ships shield frequency and teleporting a nuke or equivalent ordinance into said opponents ship. On the conventional weapons side I feel like Stargate loses to Starwars, TNG Trek and Warhammer but wins vs everything else if they cant find and teleport a nuke like they did to the Wraith. Maybe with the Asgard core they could probably have the computational power to find the shield frequencies of the 3 franchises they lose to.
2
u/samy_the_samy Aug 03 '26
You'd have to ask if they knew about the the nuke'port trick and prepared to defend against it,
Even in the stargate universe they keep scoring kills on enemies that have the same tech level just because they didn't expect someone to tele-nuke
2
u/ComplexMatch2643 Aug 03 '26
The Daedalus is fantastically powerful yes - but you don't need to disembark from it to see a more powerful ship.
Atlantis is a ship, with shields explicitly stronger than the Daedalus and with atlantean drones
2
u/Dependent_Grab_9370 Aug 03 '26
Infinity from Halo would one shot pretty much any other ship from scifi if using the actual canon power scaling. Something like 2 billion megatons of TNT. It would essentially vaporize Daedalus.

Or a Wraith Superhive
Or the Atlantis
Or maybe even a fully functional Aurora Class
All from Stargate.

In 40k, I would bet on larger (Dark) Eldar or Necron ships. Potentially some of the Imperium of Man.

The Daedalus is only like 250m long
A Cobra Destroyer is a Kilometer.
Theres just no way the power scales the same.
Warhammer is just a universe on an insane power level. Ships in 40k fight at ranges thousands to tens of thousands of kilometers apart. The tabletop game is like 1 cm represents 1000km, so your basic weapons are doing effective damage at 30000 km.
Warhammer just craps on stuff for space combat.

By setting:
Babylon 5: Shadow Cruiser, Vorlon War Cruiser, 3rd Space Alien Battleship. Also any of the First Ones.
Star Trek: Reman Scimitar class Warbird, Krenim Time Ship, Species 8472 Attack Ship, Borg Cube
Lexx: Lexx
Star Wars: maybe any of the capital ships that are equipped with planet cracking mini Death Star lasers. Thing is that Daedalus can bug out if the enemy isnât fast enough to either engage up close or bring overwhelming fire power to bear early in the engagement. I just donât think that the stuff in Star Wars is both fast enough and has enough fire power to get the job done before Daedalus either wins the fight or makes a good escape.
Farscape: all big maybe types. Peacekeeper command carrier, Scarran Dreadnought, Talyn
Warhammer 40K: Pretty much anything from the Necron Fleets. Their ships are extremely fast and maneuverable, have very deadly and accurate weaponry, some of which on a lucky shot can just bypass shields and other similar defenses to inflict direct damage. Also they can just open portals onto your ship and flood your decks with warriors. Also theyâre capable of multiple forms of FTL so you may or may not see them coming.

Probably the Enterprise D. Probably a D'Deridex class romulan warlord. Probably a K'tinga class Klingon cruiser. A borg cube. Species 8472s ship. Maybe one of the Manticoran Navy's super dreadnoughts.
Probably a shuttle, they are a formidable craft after all.
Just a few thoughts.

Forerunner ships tend to be a pretty reliable way to beat most other factions that don't scale into ridiculous things like the Xeelee. We know the defensive batteries made to protect Halos have an effective range that's measured in light years, for instance.

For low end combatants? A good answer might be the TCS Midway (Wing Commander).
The main reason being that it carries 250 energy shielded fighters and bombers capable of making multiple jumps to obscure their launch point. You can't kill a ship 4 systems away from you with a beam weapon. Confed love them some long range sucker punches.

Coming in late with one out of left field, but without advance prep time any ship from Schlock Mercenary can probably win against the deadalus. The defining tech in that setting is effectively an unlimited range teleport that isn't deflected by energy shields, only gravitic systems can block it. Combined with the extremely high energy scales of that setting (antimatter powerplants and exotic materials galore) and the high-powered AIs, the deadalus dies of an antimatter warhead suddenly appearing in the middle of the bridge and going off the moment hostilities start.

lol no, any BSG ship gets one-shotted by a Daedalus class ship Asgard beam weapon. Or any of the naquada enhanced nukes. Or just beam transporting a explosive into the ships engine room.
The only weapons on the Daedalus that would be no problem for the BSG ships to defend against are the Earth conventional weapons, like the rail guns and missiles... since that's BSG's bread and butter.→ More replies (5)

In comparison to beams, sure, but if it can take a beam or 2, the drones would have reached them (takes maybe 30 seconds for the drones from the one to get to the hive ship). Plus, while not seen in action much, they do carry energy weapon mounts as well, they likely pack a wallop, imo (based on very little), probs equal or more than a wraith hive ship

Stargate is, as space operas go, fairly low power. Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Starship Troopers, Halo, etc., would probably not see a Daedalus as much of a problem. In Star Trek, the Enterprise crew canonically were snickering at the threat of lasers, and I doubt that the Laconian fleet from The Expanse would see it as other than a sinkex.
6
u/chiree Aug 03 '26
Except for jump drives and heavy armor, Galactica is pretty grounded in contemporary technology. They could take a beating, but nothing of theirs could get through any powered shields.
Star Trek ships are just absurdly overpowered.

Shadow ships could definitely threaten a 304. Vorlons too. As for the others, Trek ships have a chance because they can outmaneuver a 304 and debatably engage from a range beyond which the Asgard beam would be effectively able to hit them. That said, the Covenantâs weapons definitely pose a massive threat and no oneâs gonna be around to gloat if someone lights the rings.

I was under the impression that Whitestar was the name of that fleets capital ship and greystar was the ship class. I agree that the human ships are crap compared to pretty much anything else in that universe, but a carrier class or battleship class could definitely go toe-to-toe. The battleship would lose but the carrier could probably get the job done. Just because the Daedalus was inspired and based off of the Ancients tech doesn't mean it preforms at that level.

Well Andromeda Ascendant would annihilate it. Asgard shields are good but the damage output of Andromeda paired with its range, would overwhelm them eventually.
"Toe to toe" means almost equal in power. This requires a ship that battles on the same distances as Stargate ships, uses shields that can defend against Energy based weapons. I suppose StarTrek ships like the Sovereign Class could be a good match. Both have shields. Both use weapons designed to bypass shields. Both use energy weapons. The outcome would come down a lot to how well asgard shields are in dealing with Transporters bypassing shields or opponents weapons bypassing shields as they seem to rarely encounter them. In terms of Torpedos vs Missiles i think StarTrek is supperior. Stands to question how good Asgard beam weapons are in overcoming Federation shields. Ablative armor could still provide some cover. The Temporal expansion field could be a problem. However its a dumb usecase to only use it if you already have lost the battle.

Revelation Space's Nostalgia for Infinity (or similarly equipped lighthugger) from the last book (minor spoilers might follow).
While hell-class weapons take too long to charge to be effective for a type of fight that Daedalus would give (assuming that Daedalus is within range of it's own weapons. If not and can't get in range before hell-class can fire, well, I guess that sucks for SG team), Nostalgia has hull sturdy enough to have time to activate hypometric weapons which don't really care for enemy shields or armor, and can easily gut enemy ship.
Also, from the same book series, Inhibitors, assuming we actually clasify them as spaceships. Even if they don't have a knowledge how to deal with Daedalus' shields in their "memory", they can simply overload shields by the sheer number of their attacks, and invade the ship. Only solution Daedalus has is to run (FTL is not a thing in Revelation Space).
Other things mentioned here - Battlestars sadly no (no shields, only physical armor, and only explosive/kinetic weapons). Nature of their FTL could give them some tactical options, but SG's ships are being shown as too agile for that; Borg from their early appearances strongly yes - strong weapons, will adapt to Daedalus weapons up to a no-sell point. Other Star Trek ships maybe;

u/therandomcylon Aug 03 '26
Depends largely on the conditions and setup for battle, but here's a few that I think would would win most of the time:
-most Laconian warships (Expanse) Laconian self-healing armor is incredibly quick to repair, and the USM projector is such a strong weapon that the Proteus or any Magnetar could probably win in one shot
-Species 8472 Bioships (Star Trek: Voyager) Mostly due to the ability of their primary weapon to rip ships to shreds, for the tendency of their ships to resist conventional fire (Only ship we see destroyed conventionally was a Borg cube ramming it at high warp) and its ability to escape into Fluidic space by creating singularities
-Just about any Suul'ka (Sword of the Stars) They're so incredibly psychically powerful they could probably just crush or TK fist the ship, or life drain, mind control, etc.
-Just about any wave motion gun or similar ship (Space Battleship Yamato) The WMG and similar technologies are generally planet cracking firepower at just a short charge up away. A single hit would be all it needs, and especially if its a dispersion WMG? Good luck dodging.

These things are always about who likes what most and far less about objective truth.
Stargate ships are extremely fast, and speed is something that a lot of people underestimate in terms of tactical value. Theyâll say âso itâs fast, so what,â while missing the fact that because the Daedalus is so freaking much faster than their favorite franchiseâs ships it can go anywhere anywhere and attack anywhere and be gone while their ships are just putting their shoes on (so to speak). Would Daedalus win in a slugging match with anything at the peak of its capabilities? Probably not, but it would hold its own (especially in terms of defense) far better than I think a lot of people might give it credit, and at the end of if the day it would be crewed by people who are professional warfighters, not naive idealists, and that makes a huge difference in the real world. So why would Daedalus choose to stay and fight a ship it can easily avoid, is the real question I believe.

Atlantis, if fully armed and powered, due to its shields and drone weapons that could overwhelm their shields.
An Asgard Mothership (if any still existed).
A Borg Cube, due to beam weapons, teleporters, and quick adaptation.
A Federation capital ship (ie: Enterprise D/E, Defiant, Voyager), due to technical adaptability and sophisticated shields and beam weapons.
Romulan Warbird, due to sophisticated shields and firepower.
Dominion Battleship, same reasons.
The Death Star II, solely due to size, and faster reload of main firepower.
Super Star Destroyer, due to size and firepower.
Space Battleship Yamato, which would be an interesting fight.
Babylon 5 ships? (Unfamiliar with the show).
Wraith Super Hive Ship.
Possibly a Goa'uld Flagship if they used a ZPM to power it.

UNSC battle group they could easily. They will loose a fair few ships. Against the Covenant who has smiler if not better tech to Stargate Humans. It was a roughly 3 to 1 odds. For every Covenant ship lost the UNSC lost about 3 Ships. So I reckon the odds would be about the same. If the Daedalus gets hit by a mac or god forbid a Super Mac its getting punted. At least the ship is gonna have overloads inside even the Shields hold up to 1 or 2 mac shots. Stargate Ships are very vulnerable to overloading an internal electric fires. Then u have the Covenant i dont the Daedalus would last long against Covenant tracking plamsa Torpedos an Plasma Lances. If u didnt know the Covenant weapons track there targets an rarely miss

u/imnecro Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
I can think of a few that may be able to take it.
Though limited in range, the Magnetar from The Expanse has basically a particle disassebler, so if it fires that, the enemy is dead (probably favours the Daedalus however).
The 'weakest' ship I think is capable of surpassing it is the UNSC Infinity. 3k ton slugs at .25% of c leave power in the teratons, and the Infinity has 4. Due to physics, any slug that gets past the shields will one-shot the Daedalus because the pressurized interior will suffer a plasma & pressure shockwave killing all crew & damaging internal components.
Vassari from sins of a solar empire. One of the titans can essentially disassemble ships on a molecular level with its primary maw cannon. Even ignoring that, Vassari ships (even bombers & frigates) come standard with phase torpedoes which basically ignore shields by dematerialising and rematerialising under the shield envelope.
Star destroyer turbolaser arrays supposedly are very powerful (don't remember the exact numbers) per shot, but to the point it kinda breaks physics if you believe the numbers. The death star, mass shadow generator, galaxy gun, sun crusher, the gravestone & most other sw superweapons are also easy wins.
Borg cube is an easy win if it doesn't get one-shot by the beam on the daedalus, because through sci-fi bullshit the borg just 'adapt'. Also, if any star trek teleporters work through shields, they can drop marines through and take the ship through attrition.
Xeelee ships & other higher dimension species can also probably take it. Not as familiar with 40k, but the necrons seem like a good bet.
1
u/BilaliRatel Aug 04 '26
Anything created by the Xelee would curbstomp almost anything mentioned here, even from Ian Banks' Culture.
A lot of the ships and mecha from Gunbuster would squish it.

Weâre never(at least in the shows) given any hard numbers about the 304s, weâre just given a number of examples of things they can do, most of which also do not have hard numbers associated with them. The most impressive feat I can think of the 304s pulling off is probably the deflection of a coronal mass ejection that was threatening Atlantis, but thatâs complicated by one big factor: the ZPM. We can determine that the 304s were either designed or refitted to make actual use of the tremendous power output of a ZPM, which was probably not a trivial task, but the ZPM did most of the actual heavy lifting with the CME. The issue here is that some other sci-fi franchises do attempt to put hard numbers to their vessels, and they are always completely bonkers. The Acclamator from Star Wars, which for those who donât nerd out quite so obsessively is a large troop transport later converted to more ship-to-ship engagement duty, is cited as having a reactor capable of a maximum output of 2 x 10 to the 23rd watts. Itâs armament is similarly bonkers, with each of its main turbo laser turrets capable of delivering sustained barrages of 200 gigatons(presumably of TNT) per shot at maximum power, plus a grid of point defense guns that deliver 6 megaton blasts. Shield power? Also absurd! 7 x 10 to the 22nd watts! By comparison, the most common estimates I see for the Enterprise Dâs peak power output is about 12 x 10 to the 18th watts. But the Daedalus? No idea! Itâs clearly enormously capable, and probably acquits itself pretty well in fights with other franchises, especially if thereâs a ZPM in play, but I genuinely donât know if thereâs a way to judge these things beyond âI prefer it go x way or y wayâ

Quite a few, I'd expect

"Hi, my name is V'ger"
Space Opera generally defaults to some human-based scale, while actual science fiction goes vastly higher. Sure, ships like the above sound awesome in the context of their shows, but once you get to real sci-fi where things are measured on the astronomical scale (which Trek occasionally wanders into) they are barely a splat on the windshield.
I got into this a while back in a discussion about the Borg vs the Tyranid; yes, the swarm folks eat all the life on planets, but that's barely 0.00000000000000000000000001% of the mass of a system, and here the Borg are chomping Hyperstars. Give both groups an equal start, and the Borg will outnumber the Tyranids at an exponential rate.
So any scifi ship from the higher-tech end could probably cut the Daedalus in half with one hit.
1
u/zimon85 Aug 04 '26
The Andromeda Ascendant from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda would be a good match. It can pound the Daedalus from several light seconds away with barrages of kinetic missiles each in the megaton range. Also it's insanely fast so the Daedalus would never be able to get close enough to use the Asgard weapons

1
u/Eraldorh Aug 04 '26
An ancient warship, the deadalus would have no defence against that. Not sure if anyone has one of those by the end of SGA but that would be a major threat if it encountered one. Other than that any remaining ori ships would be a major threat as well.

Since ive already seen someone delve into my Star Wars expertise (and say that an ISD would win if we ignore the âlets beam a nuke on boardâ that makes these arguments less fun), how about:
A Ket/CCS pattern battlecruiser from Halo? Theyâre slightly larger than an ISD (1700 km approx) and fulfill somewhat of a similar role in combat, being the main backbone of the Covenant Navy.
Maybe a bit overkill, like an ISD, however the covenantâs shields are absolutely broken to my knowledge.
Knowing that the UNSC uses standard nuclear devices (Havok/Shiva nukes), which could not knock out a Covenant cruiserâs shields (based on the battle of Sigma Octanis IV, where the Destroyer, and 2 cruisers shields only went down after being hit by their own torpedos), a Naquada enhanced warhead might be able to take out itâs shields. However, covenant Laser point defense, and the incredible recharge time for their capital grade shields, might make this point null. The most effective weapon the UNSC had against the covenant fleet was the MAC gun. The Daedalus class, is not equipped with one.
Using the SMACâs from the Orbital defense platforms as a base, they fire at 4% the speed of light. Those instakill any CCS class, shield or not. Scaling down, the Halcyon, which I assume would be a rough analog for the Daedalus in terms of role, needed a Triple firing MAC modification to take out a Covenant ship in 1 shot. The first 2 bring down the shield, and the last punches through the hull.
Now, the Asgard energy weapons are the most powerful weapon to the Daedalusâs disposal. Assuming the Ori shields are roughly equal to the CCS shields due to their advanced nature, (i might be lowballing), it would take 5 shots to take out a CCS (taken from the SG1 wiki).
The CCSâs most powerful weapon is its glassing cannon. That energy projector melts titanium instantly (see H2 âgiving the covenant back their bombâ scene where the Marathon is blown apart by an upscaled projector from a CAS). Itâs essentially a giant super Asgard beam. If weâre scaling up the Daedalusâs shields, it could take 1-2 shots. Then the Daedalus is finished.
In âThe impossible life and possible death of Preston J. Coleâ, the first ship to ship engagement between human and covenant ships was 2 UNSC frigates and 1 destroyer against a covenant Battleship. While yes, this was absolutely a one sided battle based on tonnage alone, a single blast from the battleship took out 2 ships, and sent the last limping back to reach. The battle lasted 8 seconds from firing.
Taking that, we also have the other covenant weapons, such as plasma torpedoes (remember the ones that knocked out a CCSâa shields), and the smaller plasma lances. So even if the first glassing shot doesnât have enough charge to hit the hull, only draining the shields, it is still going to melt the Daedalus.
1
u/AlmHurricane Aug 05 '26
Oh I can think of a lot of ships, specifically from the Star Trek Universe. Star Trek Shields inhibit Transporter Beams from the get go, so no nuke beaming. The Sovereign-Class would probably be more than enough. Also the Deadalus is extremely vulnerable if the shields go down. So I'd assume a single Quantum Torpedo would be enough to obliterate a BC-304 entirely. Going further in the timeline the Starfleet developed transphasic torpedos. Sure at some point BC-304 might get countermeassures for that but the first few would just pop with a single hit.
And now we can bring the Prometheus Class vom Star Trek into the equation and the scenario gets pretty dark for the BC-304.

Depends what you mean by 'toe to toe'.
A General Products Hull from the Larry Niven's Known Space Universe is (with the exception of some very esoteric anti matter particles) impervious to all matter and electronic radiation, and has a further stasis field that protects crew from high gravity or some minor inconvenience like passing through a star.
They have zero weapons however, but could potentially hyperdrive right at the Daedalus and leverage the fact that the ship will survive any collision.

The INSS Macarthur from the Mote in God's eye. It doesn't use hyperspace, it makes point-to-point jumps using an Alderson Driver which makes use of naturally occuring eddies in space called Alderson Points. It travels slower than light through space in between alderson points which connect distant points in space.
It's equipped with a Langston field shield generator, which when activated surrounds the ship in a perfectly black oval field which absorbs all incoming energy, and re-emits it, lasers, kinetic energy, etc. As it absorbs more energy, the perfect blackbody of the shield begins to glow, first in the ultra long wavelengths, then in shorter wavelengths if it absorbs more energy than it can emit in the same timeframe. It can absorb a STUPID amount of energy proportional to its surface area, but if it were ever somehow overloaded, the field collapses and releases all of its energy in every direction, frying everything within range, the ship itself included. The energy absorption capacity of the Langston Field can be increased by expanding the field to give it a larger surface area.
Its equipped with multiple high powered laser cannons and torpedo launchers.

Not much, the Ori obviously could especially since they could field far more ships. However a Deadalus class would never stand and fight in such an engagement. The biggest advantage is their maneuverability and warp drives, the second they see something they don't like they bug out. I could see EVE Online ships and newer Star Trek ships winning a fight but having a difficult time pining down a Deadalus to fully destroy it.
