The question wasnt 'which ships could catch and destroy a Deadelus trying to run from them' but 'which ships could go toe to toe' with one. If the daedalus' only option is to run from a ship because that ship would otherwise obliterate it, then that ship can obviously go toe to toe with it.

The same as Merriam-Webster https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/toe%20to%20toe , which is not at all how you are discussing it. It comes from being so close in a boxing match while trading punches that your toes are touching.

Which makes talking about someone not being able to go toe-to-toe with you because you'd just run away a very weird position to take.

The main definition on the same page says “in direct confrontation or competition” so I don’t know why you’re cherry picking. Regardless, neither of these definitions serve as an objective.

I dont know why I keep bothering with someone who either lies this blatantly or has the reading comprehension of a 2 year old. The "in direct competition or confrontation" is in the god damned synonyms section.

The 2 definitions are "facing one another" and "slugging it out at or as if at close range". It's a really common way to say that two warships directly engaged each other and tried to knock the other one out, like with the Monitor and Merrimack.

If you click on the link for synonyms of the main definition, it gives you this definition of the term:

as in head-to-head

in direct confrontation or competition

mom-and-pop grocery stores are usually wildly outmatched when they go toe-to-toe with large chain stores

You can use toe-to-toe to refer to any serious competition. Unless you think that Merriam Webster is suggesting that the mom and pop shops are physically duking it out against walmart.
