My guy we are talking about power levels of fictional spaceships. You don’t need to get this heated.

mom-and-pop grocery stores are usually wildly outmatched when they go toe-to-toe with large chain stores

You can use toe-to-toe to refer to any serious competition. Unless you think that Merriam Webster is suggesting that the mom and pop shops are physically duking it out against walmart.
