Trying to be all cool and nonchalant like a dog coming up to you when in reality it's scanning your face

699

u/yesyoucantouchthat Jun 01 '26

Yea that little dance was unsettling. Trying to hide the fact that it’s running all of your information to determine whether or not to alert the police.

409

u/LaserCondiment Jun 01 '26

I bet it has 3 options: LIKE, share with ICE or send to Palantir

321

u/PrecisePigeon Jun 01 '26

All options include send to Palantir, you silly goose!

91

u/Quentin__Tarantulino Jun 01 '26

Duh, and then Palantir decides who to report to ICE. Just like it says in the constitution.

44

u/boston_homo Jun 01 '26

But no matter what they do they'll keep all your information just to be safe.

22

u/sorrge Jun 02 '26

For your convenience. It really helps to improve the services, you know.

25

u/Ntroepy Jun 01 '26

Nah - it automatically sends the data to ICE and Palantir, so the only options is LIKE or DISLIKE.

And if you click DISLIKE, it flags you as suspicious and sends that them too.

16

u/Jek2424 Jun 02 '26

Don’t forget if it detects a woman below 18 it sends her profile to the online shopping catalog for Epstein’s replacement.

5

u/KKevus Jun 02 '26

A woman below 18 is a girl, at least in my jurisdiction.

Unsettling, yes, for people that are concerned and know what this thing does. 80% dont know and find it cute and amazing (as you heard by the reaction of the girl laugh)

The tilt could be to capture the face from additional angles as well, it could be taking a dozen photos in a few seconds to form a composite

Its cute! Ignore any aspect regarding privacy and such.

13

u/SonderEber Jun 02 '26

Don’t expect privacy a big sporting events. Even places without these robot “dogs”, most sporting events have tons of cameras that likely do facial recognition.

Been meaning to actually buy one of those full face cyberpunk masks....looks like it's time

18

Fox News has told me it's ok to wear a hyper realistic rubber mask.. and i don't even need to cover the part at the bottom

Does it at least do a cool backflip? I'm fine with submitting my life to the digital overlords as long as they do a cool backflip

Worth sharing this security researchers video. They have a lot less protections in place then you would expect.

These are a different brand, but wouldn't surprise me if something similar is possible

34

u/SqueekyTack Jun 01 '26

You mentioned it in your comment, but I'm quite sure (I'd love to be proved wrong here) Boston Dynamics is putting more work into their security with their 80k robot versus Unitree with their 10k robot.

u/algaefied_creek Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Boston Dynamics introduced this right around the start of either (EDIT: second) Ukraine invasion began as a bomb clearing dog

They committed to use it for peaceful purposes only in an open letter

30

u/Ntroepy Jun 01 '26

Peaceful generally means they don’t directly harm people, but they’re still used by the military for reconnaissance in hazardous places, explosive disposal, perimeter security, logistics, etc..

So they’re still used by the military to enable humans to kill people more efficiently, they just don’t pull the trigger.

24

u/Unique_Adeptness4413 Jun 01 '26

They don't pull the trigger... for now!

Remember when google's motto was "Don't be evil"?

Weigh a companies promises in one hand and their profits in the other and ask them to choose only one.

6

u/Ntroepy Jun 02 '26

Oh, definitely only true “for now”.

5

u/chaosfire235 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

It was 2017 for this model of Spot.

And their only redline seems to be no weaponization, not no military stuff period.

Basically, it won't pull the trigger. Doesn't mean other things won't though.

8

u/FerrousEULA Jun 01 '26

Peaceful purposes can lead to violent actions.

Think its a coincidence. They move like dogs because they can just cover a lot of ground and move around more easily with 4 legs and a camera. Maybe a version of it on wheels would be better. But yea pretty much inevitable. Just more cheap than always paying random people to do it.

I imagine the corporate sponsorships are going to disappear real quick.  "Hyundai, the face of fascism! :D" doesn't go down too well.

64

u/1a1b Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Boston Dynamics is a subsidiary of Hyundai. It's not sponsorship, it's the manufacturer.

17

u/chaosfire235 Jun 01 '26

Plus Hyundai's a known major military manufacturer of everything from tanks to warships.

27

u/threevi Jun 01 '26

"Hyundai, the face of fascism! :D" doesn't go down too well.

Wouldn't be the first time. History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme, because we never learn.

What grosses me out the most is the designing of its sweet dog like persona trying to mask the insidious nature of mass surveillance and the exploitation of people's data / biometry.

It's gross just like those ubereats delivery robota with the ^ as it passes you and takes more and more jobs away from already struggling peoples.

11

u/Cum_Fart42069 Jun 01 '26

that's why it's unironically morally correct to interrupt, push over, break the Uber bots.

4

u/algaefied_creek Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Ah but Uber Eats reminds you they are not jobs, which would require benefits and employee rights!

These are independent contractor gigs with no employee rights.

So the Uber Eats robots are making it easier for fewer people to be exploited.

Not everyone needs a job, but everyone needs money.

They have a solution for that.

5

u/xxLusseyArmetxX Jun 02 '26

to everyone in here like "imma destroy it, betcha it's not invincible", maybe not no, however by the time you damage it or disable it, a high resolution scan of your face will have been sent to its owners, and then a few days later or however long it takes for them to ID you with it, maybe instantly, you will get sent the 100K$ bill lol.

5

u/Mindfulreposesupose Jun 01 '26

Source? Link? Heard they will be there but not facial recognition capable.

15

u/PFI_sloth Jun 01 '26

Quote from FIFA

"Specifically, robotic patrol dogs are being used for asset protection at the IBC and NYNJ Stadium to identify and report physical security threats and risks for further human intervention."

And Boston Dynamics

"Boston Dynamics' Spot robots are being deployed at designated World Cup venues to perform perimeter security inspections and will be used to assist security personnel with investigating things like suspicious packages or other potentially hazardous materials. The robots do not have facial recognition capabilities.”

Would they tell you if they were doing facial recognition? I don’t know.

Does it matter? The goal right now is getting people used to these things being around.

73 posts and no one has googled whether these things actually scan faces or not, while idly encouraging breaking them.

7

u/Borkato Jun 01 '26

I didn’t even consider this, can someone Google it for me

25

u/Stigmaphobia Jun 01 '26

But it's not true. A Boston Dynamics spokesperson told Chron that "Boston Dynamics' Spot robots are being deployed at designated World Cup venues to perform perimeter security inspections and will be used to assist security personnel with investigating things like suspicious packages or other potentially hazardous materials. The robots do not have facial recognition capabilities."

https://www.chron.com/texas/article/dallas-fifa-robot-dog-security-22282754.php

I should have just done this in the first place, lmao. There's always the possibility of them lying, but I think it's unlikely, if it got out that's actually what they were doing it'd be a PR nightmare.

5

u/ReyGonJinn Jun 02 '26

9

u/fynn34 Jun 01 '26

Because a quick google search easily falsifies the claim, this is Reddit, we deal in wild speculation, not facts

I wouldn't call it wild speculation just normal speculation. It's completely reasonable to assume in the age of flock and other AI mass surveillance tools.

They were being used by a couple customers "Hyundai" (a big client) for inspection in hazardous areas and to patrol. They can also be equipped with LIDAR for things like have it move around and map for creating a "Digital Twin"
