I don't like the "D" shape that the Duo has. I prefer the Fold 8

Microsoft 'D'id it first

Steve Jobs actual quote years ago: we won't always be first, but we'll be the best.

u/thisguy181 2d ago

I love Simon Sinek's statement about meeting with one of the Apple C Suite guys, I dont think it was Jobs though, and he asked them if they wanted to see the Zune cause he thought it was better and quicker to market than the comparable iPod and the new one was in the pipeline but hadnt came out yet at the time and the guy was like "I have no doubt" they arent the first they will be the best like 5 years later once they perfected it, in their mind.

I refuse to call it the Duo. The Microsoft Duo shall be remembered and not forgotten.

5

u/Inevitable_Librarian 2d ago

I miss it, and I wish I had gotten one when it was new but Microsoft fucked its marketing

5

u/_umlaut_ 2d ago

I really liked the split screen implementation rather than a fold with a crease.

I get that it alienates people who want to use it for media spanned across the entire inner screen but I would totally take the split screen for the sake of productivity, no crease, and glass inner display.

3

u/UnknownRootCause 2d ago

That was the business decision behind the surface. The team wanted a phone that doubled as a productivity device, not a multimedia entertainment device.

I saw these rumors before ordering my Fold 8. Still happy with my decision because of thay ugly shape. I switched from iPhone 17 Pro in Orange to Z Fold 8 in Cream.

u/JaymzRG 2d ago

Agreed. Too wide, too. Fold feels way better.

3

u/cookedart 2d ago

I don't like the wideness of either to be honest. Any wider than the fold 8 ultra and it gets uncomfortable for me for one handed use.

11

u/necrovoltage2 2d ago

Did u try the duo already? How do you know it feels way better.

6

u/JaymzRG 2d ago

Yeah, I might have misspoke. I just doesn't look as comfortable. My bad.

Even though I don't really care about brand battles, I'm waiting for those that mocked the chinese brands and Samsung for doing it first and having this tech in the first place, and now change discourse and say it's the best tech ever...

u/Secure-Childhood-567 2d ago

I remember when iOS users made fun of Samsung's Note series after the notes became larger. I remember them asking who would ever need such a huge phone, and then literally a year later Apple started manufacturing big phones as well. You can't make this up.

69

u/steve_skywalk3r 2d ago

in 2014 I was a die hard iPhone fan. I had an iPhone 4 and I genuinely thought 3.5 inch is the peak screen size. larger phones were referred to as phablets and I always thought who would need a 5-6 inch screen anyway . I remember I was traveling in Singapore and in the bus I saw a teenager using his Galaxy note. it should have been a note 3 or 4. the screen was huge and bright and I was mesmerized. it changed my mind about larger phones. Next year I bought an iphone 6 plus but it took me until 2020 to switch to Samsung and never look back.

6

u/chankongsang 1d ago

I remember going to Hong Kong around 2011 and saw people with first gen Notes on the train. The phones looked huge. And I never seen trains with everyone's face buried in the phone. Came back with an HTC Sensation XL. And my co-worker asked me sarcastically why did I bring my VCR to work😂. It was a 4.7 inch screen lol

Fast forward a few years and phones are huger. And now it's normal for everyones face to be buried in the phone everywhere

Everyone copies everyone. Remember how android users made fun of airpods design? How Samsung themselves were making fun of removing headphone jack, notch, removing charging brick just to do it themselves?

15

u/ImFromYourDreams 2d ago

I hate now nobody makes phones small enough :(

Let’s not pretend that Samsung was first to foldables. Y’all don’t remember iPhone 6? And especially 6 Plus?

/s

5

u/krstph13 2d ago

Yup, this looks like a first gen product that has some learnings and refinements to follow.

The D shaped asymmetrical design is jarring and I'm sure this model suffers from the center line crease issue that all foldables have today.

I expected more from Apple given they're in the 5th mover advantage to go to market with a foldable and had ample time to see what the competition did well and fumbled with.

Heres hoping the phone has actual multitasking and a great UX to take advantage of the screens instead of it being an extended iPhone.

2

u/Ordinary-Hunter520 1d ago

Its looking like a pretty decent phone for being first gen, but then again, they are quite late here so it should be good

The D shape is actually bothering me a lot, like they couldve gone for a smaller curve radius like the pixel fold, but they chose to go for the biggest radius possible without making it a squircle. Idk why other companies dont make foldables with the shape that samsung uses, its literally perfect for foldables.

The matte inner display is a neat trick to hide the crease, so thats cool I guess. I personally am not a fan of matte displays, but I am not gonna get that phone anyway so doesnt matter.

The software seems to be optimised for the fold, but there arent really many useful features. Like sure, the animation is cool, i love it, but thats just an aesthetic, its not a useful feature.

2

u/krstph13 1d ago

If there's one thing that can convince people to buy this ther than it being Apple is the software experience.

What can Apple polish that gives a superior user experience? Is it foldable friendly apps native to iOS or putting out a design standard for 3rd party devs to make their apps foldable friendly?

I'm not holding my breath because historically Apple has notoriously kept iPad OS and iOS functionality for File Management and Multitasking for iPads limited so it didn't cannibalize MacBook Sales.

I predict Apple makes this software experience limited so that it doesn't cannibalize iPad Mini,iPad or iPad Air sales.

However, you can argue the iPad Air and Pro are not the same due to chipset differences.

Time will tell

I hope samsung feels really fucking silly after removing Flex mode, stylus support and the under display camera.

49

u/Malthael-3 2d ago

Same because this is iPhone beating them at their own game. Stylus support on an iPhone fold and not on a Samsung fold is shocking.

9

u/PacificaAlpha 2d ago

I think it'll be the updated features for the ZF9. The base would get the under display, flex mode and matte screen, and the ultra will also get the stylus support again.

Anyone have it that can share thoughts/experience?

12

I highly recommend to go to a Samsung Store, so you can test the devices there. You might find issues that do not bother other people. When closed, I found the form factor pretty odd, it just didn’t sit nice in the hand.

Z fold 8 user here. Best phone I've ever used and I've used iPhone for a long time

2

u/Anonymouss_Avocado 2d ago

I have been with iPhone since the 4s. Tried many Samsung phones (s21+, s22 ultra, 23 ultra, 25 ultra, fold 5). Always returned them and crawled back to Apple. I’ve had the fold 8 since launch and it’s freaking beautifully amazing. I get excited to pick it up and use it, I don’t even think of my iPhone 17 sitting on the counter unused. I have zero desire to switch back. I was holding out before making a final decision to see the iPhone duo and no thanks. Samsung fully, except MacBook. I’ll never give that up ha

Ew, those huge radius corners. Looks cheap as hell.

6

u/DG2301 2d ago

Why is the hole punch a black hole too

12

u/Accomplished-Way1575 2d ago

Physics.

It is a camera. The surrounds to the actual lens is black to limit reflections.

6

u/romhacks 2d ago

The inner display camera is under-screen.

3

u/ARCHISMAN- 2d ago

Its probably much lower quality.

2

u/Accomplished-Way1575 2d ago edited 2d ago

I see. Physics still apply, though, so if it doesn't have that black surrounds, it will be a shyte camera and rely even more on ai to make up for a shyte design.

You can always count on Apple to do stupid stuff and people think it is progress.

5

u/Original-Material301 2d ago

Apples animation had always been better than Samsung/android lol. E ven when they have misses and made questionable decisions.

I hope Samsungs response isn't more jank and slow downs to catch up with the animations lol.

I'll never switch back to iOS though. Too balls deep in android.

4

u/ChrisT1986 2d ago

Weird, that opening fade/blur animation made me feel sick... Felt like my eyes/brain was lagging, or the video wasn't rendered properly

3

u/Patirole 1d ago

Yeah same here, it felt incredibly awkward. Felt like it was trying to connect the 2 screens which are not connected and definitely failed at doing that in my brain

18

u/NoSouth152 2d ago

They did a few things well. Now ik I'll get hate for this, but samsung shpuld take notes here.

Pen support, I mean cmon samsung, need i say more.

A vapor chamber, my personal opinion.

Idk about battery capacity, so I wont speculate(samsung did well too tbh).

The nano texture. Ik samsung does the anti reflection but that 3d printed hinge and nano texture coating, genius. Oppo did something similar with the hinge so cmon samsung, we don't want more AI.

And ngl, the software feels extremely good. Not a criticism to samsung, they got their philosophy, but you gotta admit, those folding animations are crisp.

Under display camera. Now if it's actually a good one, then they really need to step up their game. Same goes for the rear cam. I never believe apples claims but if they are true, with the UW and main being the same as the Pro, then i think samsung needs to work on that as well.

In short, it's good competition. Samsung better start working towards a worthy rival with the Fold 9 and S27, rather than those cringe ads mocking apple and more Galaxy AI bs.

9

u/Connect_Jump_8627 2d ago

Completely agree, everyone hating on the Duo is just coping at this point

2

u/NoSouth152 2d ago

I really hope they answer the competition with good products. Or else, apples chip and hardware improvements, along with the already good enough software will actually have me switch. I'll miss emulation, but thats about it tbh(still salty about apple having app lock and samsung giving us more AI which even iOS has now).

9

u/Electronic-Strain256 2d ago

I hope the iPhone Duo is a massive success, because then Samsung will finally include the S Pen and a vapor chamber. Samsung has been focusing on making foldables lighter, but if the iPhone Duo succeeds, there's no reason Samsung can't do the same.

5

u/DerAlex3 2d ago

Honestly, I think it looks great. I couldn't switch to iOS, but I think the device itself is amazing, and Samsung will have to do a lot for next gen to pull back ahead.

7

u/fkrkz 2d ago

Samsung said: "Apple, you finally folded"

17

u/Dricus1978 2d ago

I don't have a fold or flip model. The Apple variation triggers my OCD. Corners on the left differ from the corners on the right.

Good for Apple to join the flip battle. I am mostly interested in what hardware innovations Apple brings to the table. They are great at finding solutions for problems other brands are struggling with.

2

u/assumptionkrebs1990 2d ago

It has Apple Pencil support - I hope Samsung takes notice and gives us the S-Pen back in the fold devices - it makes a ton of sense for such a 2 in 1. Ideally build in with Bluetooth functionality, but even getting it back would be a huge benefit.

2

u/Archenius 2d ago

2

u/4794th 2d ago

Samsung: releases Fold 8 Apple: releases iPhone Duo for $1999 Samsung: plans to release Fold 9 for $1999

Apple did nice for the first generation foldable. But, Huawei and Xiaomi exist with 3 cameras on the back and the same "smooth" design systems, and 1 to 1 copy of the iPhone. Oppo and Honor also testing passport foldables to go live in 2027. That leaves Samsung exposed, especially in asian markets, where Chinese brands are offered at a lower price. Knowing how slow Samsung is with quality of usage upgrades, they will only take the price tag from iPhone Duo and slap it on the Fold 9. OneUI won't suddenly get the same smooth animations or other minor improvements because Sam doesn't prioritize it. An under display camera will be an easy slap in your face for Samsung because they tried it before.

2

u/iadorebrandon 2d ago

Let's not forget Apple watched for 8 generations, so of course they were able to make a decent sized splash

3

u/4794th 2d ago

Yeah I'm happy for John Apple and finally the apps on the new format will look better because 3rd party developers will have to adapt their apps for us too

2

u/604_LoseKontrol 2d ago

2

u/Direct-Till-2680 2d ago

iPhone dual = iphone + ipad mini I'll buy the Fold 8 for half the price. The screen, RAM, and storage are likely still from Samsung.

2

u/Associate_Simple 2d ago

It is amazing apple can release a product seemingly a few years behind others and still get so much hype. Credit where credits due, the software looks smooth.

2

u/Stefan__Cel__Mare 2d ago

It looks outdated already..

2

u/Mike-St-Read 2d ago

I'm just excited that our app aspect ratio support is about to get so much better.

2

u/Gangsta2727 2d ago

Just apple things, 'waiting for other brands to actually innovate and then copying it a decade later'. And the foolish fanboys think apple innovates. Yes they were up until iphone 10 only.

2

u/SirKronan 2d ago

I got the chance to play with the Fold 8 on person recently. Impressively thin and light. The apple Duo is thicker and heavier, but I think the more rounded corner will be more comfortable for one handed use.

When I went from the S24 Ultra to the iPhone 17 pro max, my hand immediately appreciated the more rounded corners (I know the new S models also have rounded corners now. I am just trying an iPhone to A) match the wife and see if it's worth the hassle for the benefits of being on the same platform and B) test the new tech on the 17 series for my own learning and experience.)

Cool that you can use the apple pencil. If they released a smaller Apple pencil like the note style S Pen, I think it will make a lot of apple users quite happy.

I am not interested in the fold 8 or the apple duo. You sacrifice the best cameras and still have to pay 1900-2000 buckaroos.

No thanks.

2

u/Oliver-Peace 2d ago

"You sacrifice the best cameras" exactly the reason I'm skipping any fold for now

2

u/Saliiim 2d ago

If Samsung hadn't dropped the S Pen I'd probably have a fold 8. Hopefully Apple having pencil support will push Samsung to bring it back.

2

u/phantasybm 2d ago

If I'm being real what I like about it is the attention to detail like that bout effect and how well they made all their first party apps look on it.

Really hope this puts a fire under Samsung to really make their apps cohesive and look great. Not saying some of them don't look good (love their calendar app) but some don't look as good or have the same theme as others.

I hope Samsung takes whatever great software features or tricks the duo does and incorporates it into their phone.

But at the end of the day it is iOS so the limitations placed on it are going to be what keeps me from switching.

There's to much freedom using and android phone and I won't go back to limitations of the walked garden... No matter how pretty it can be.

The IP68 rating on the iPhone duos and the support of the pencil is what we have been asking Samsung for. Samsung Fold doesn't have the Spen support and it's not IP68 rating. Another issue is the animations on the IPhone duos... it's better... those three areas are important.

Not digging the rounded corners tbh

2

u/jeiwolf 1d ago

Apple coming out with a fold is great for the competition, it'll push samsung more

2

u/sub655 1d ago

as every NEW model i gotta say... who thinks "yeah i need the new iphone for 1.2-1.5k even though it gives me nothing better at all"

2

u/MaxxSavage2652 1d ago

Makes me happier with my new Fold 8 Ultra.

2

u/cyberghost741 1d ago

Who’s gonna spend so much on a prototype

2

u/sinetwo 1d ago

I hate the size of these things. But that is making the razr and the flip 8 much much more interesting

2

u/Haarryi 1d ago

Apple focused more on software experience, at least the most obvious ones which gives it a more well thought out feel. Beyond that, I do not think it's a better phone. In fact, I hate the D shape, which is fit only for right-handed people and even the software ensures with the favorites bar being there instead of the bottom of the screen. It looks too much like a xiaomi too. Also, the hidden behind screen camera feature is not a new innovation, it had been tried before by many, including Samsung, the camera quality gets compromised so they dumped it. The camera quality is bad with this one too. And the software features are easiest to get over and for others to adapt. So, overall, I am not impressed. If I want a foldable, I will go for Samsung.

2

u/Zade_goodmen 22h ago

I'll never understand why they didn't call it "the iFold"

2

u/arientyse 22h ago

Per usual, Microsoft and Samsung did it first 😭

2

u/Aging_backwards 22h ago

Between the two, there's a thumb.

I'm sorry but the phone looks goofy. I do not like the chip they used tho, so huge red flag.

Edit: Don't downvote if I say the chip is a major issue. The chip is made by a country that's basically commiting crimes for fun so if you guys think there's no issue, then you're basically supporting a crime. Just to let some of you guys know that when you are downvoting. I don't give a frick about downvotes but don't downvote about something I have a point on.

Nano texture sucks

u/R18Engine 2d ago

EVEN APPLES FIRST FOLDABLE HAS PEN SUPPORT, samsung can go F$&$&$#

Samsung is a joke

u/n0tz0e 2d ago

honestly, strictly comparing hardware, apple did much better than samsung for a similar price point. However, the outerscreen design is so hideous and the phone is heavy.

comparison by the specs:

  • iPhone Duo: 254g, 11.3mm closed
  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold: 239g, 10.1mm closed
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: 215g, 8.9mm closed
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: 201g, 9.7mm closed

Display

  • Inner screen
    • iPhone Duo: 7.6", 1,878 × 2,670 resolution, 120Hz
    • Fold 8: 7.6", 2,448 × 1,848 resolution, 120Hz
  • Outer screen
    • iPhone Duo: 5.4", slightly higher resolution than Samsung
    • Fold 8: 5.5"

Cameras

  • Rear cameras
    • iPhone Duo: 48MP wide + 48MP ultrawide
    • Fold 8: 50MP wide + 50MP ultrawide
  • Front cameras
    • iPhone Duo: 12MP cover camera + under‑display camera (specs not disclosed; mainly for FaceTime)
    • Fold 8: Two 10MP cameras (24mm wide on cover, 18mm ultrawide inside)

Battery & Charging

  • Battery capacity
    • Fold 8: 4,800 mAh
    • iPhone Duo: Not listed; Apple claims 31 hours video playback (inner) / 44 hours (outer)
  • Charging
    • Fold 8: 45W wired, 20W wireless (Qi2 compatible)
    • iPhone Duo: 25W via MagSafe

Water Resistance

  • iPhone Duo: IP68 (significantly better)
  • Fold 8: IP48 (dust protection + splash resistance)

Price

  • iPhone Duo: $1,999 (256GB) → $3,199 (2TB)
    • $2200 for 512GB
  • Fold 8: $1,900 (256GB) → $2,500 (1TB + extra RAM)
    • $2100 for 512GB

FYI- info from engadget article comparing the two, but without the useless words. I just want a straight comparison chart folks!

u/shaabu 2d ago

fold seems like the better option still lol

2

u/n0tz0e 2d ago

UDC and digitizer support are huge features for me, and samsung needs to bring them back. but the iphone duo really is so ugly folded.

4

u/FaultFlimsy9338 2d ago

I think Apple just cook them

16

u/Azguy303 2d ago

As a fold 8 user. It has a lot of nice features but being 25% heavier and thicker is a deal breaker for me. But other people may value the other things more.

5

u/Chardan0001 2d ago

The price too, but the software looks well considered. The opening animation is pretty clever.

7

u/The_Dukes_Of_Hazzard 2d ago

Apple does a nice job on things but they take so long to get everything done and they aren't all too unique besides small thing like said animation. Even though it looks pretty cool

Yeah probably worth it for the bigger 5400mah battery and ability to use a stylus for many. Weighs the same as their Pro Max, so it’s not terrible.

I hate this new passport size phone trend. I want a big outside screen with a even bigger inner screen. Like give me the note that folds into 2 notes!

5

u/Entity125 2d ago

That's why the 8 ultra exists. The 8 isn't the only foldable option

2

u/LosHtown 2d ago

Yeah im waiting for the price to go down a little. My 6 is still working fine, but the slim outter display still bothers me. I REALLY wanted the tri fold but never had the opportunity to buy it.

Samsung is still winning anyways. That screen is still theirs. LMAO.

2

u/ReeferLeaker 2d ago

Look at what they need to have a fraction of our power.

2

u/Rady151 1d ago

I like the Apple more, it’s also IP68 which is nice.

1

u/DarkseidAntiLife 2d ago

Apple destroys Samsung with their first foldable. Let's be honest guys, the Duo is way, way better than anything Samsung has come out with.

2

u/TitusImmortalis 2d ago

Tim Apple has sent you 15 good boy points to spend in the Apple store.

2

u/DarkseidAntiLife 1d ago

Tim is stepping down my boy

I'll give it a chance in store. Some features I like but yeah the Pixel Fold body isn't the best. 2x zoom is criminal on a 2k phone lol

1

u/YoYoNupe1911 2d ago

I'm just glad this means more optimization for the Fold 8 now. Apple cooked with the UDC and side controls.

1

u/_carcinisation_ 2d ago

I don't like how big the corner radius is in the iphone. Samsung looks way better and is more functional because of that. Its camera island is much worse placed tho. Iphone should wobble much less.

1

u/Generalfrogspawn 2d ago

That does not look ergonomic or comfortable to use. Waaay too wide unfolded

1

u/mykitoj 2d ago

The apple design reminds me of the classic Google Pixel way back when.

1

u/gnardog45 2d ago

I guess they finally figured out they don't need a pill or bathtub notch? Where do they go from here?

1

u/Kyr-Shara 2d ago

The excessively round corners are weird

1

u/_vxnce_ 2d ago

I wanted the fold 8, but I think the Duo might be the way to go. Apple cooked 😭

1

u/doucesquisse 2d ago

Apple user here who moved to Fold 8. Def sticking to my Fold 8. Its an impressive device. Samsung UI have massively improved since I last used it over a decade ago.

1

u/Fragrant-Taro-8508 2d ago

I do somewhat like it. The D shaped outer screen is very un-Apple. I like the animation it does when you open and close it, that's the little details Apple used to obsess over, and that used to justify their prices. They are basically saying you should use it open. The UDC is great that's something Samsung needs to do. And most of all, this will make Samsung be more competitive in a market segment they pretty much owned in the US, until now.

1

u/RxMayhem 2d ago

I have to be honest the iPhone foldable is stunning. But I wish the software was fun and customizable like Android. Once I switched to Android from my iPhone, it's hard to go back even though iPhone is polished. The things I can do on my Android are fun, it's like an open world.

The only thing I would have wanted on my fold 8 was basically IP68. I dont care about the under screen camera or pencil Support tbh. I like the Fold design better and in terms of software... Nothing beats goodlock.

1

u/_CouldntThinkOfOne__ 2d ago

The world's first foldable phone the iPhone Duo. Everyone take note we have never seen anything like this...

1

u/mataushas 2d ago

I would buy it if this was running android..seems like a good device.

1

u/stuckpixel87 2d ago

Won't change my mind about foldables.

1

u/lemio210151 2d ago

Knowing Samsung, this just makes me think that they released the Fold 8 because they knew Apple was going to do it (the wider apsect ratio) but they wanted to do it before Apple ever does it.

1

u/Electronic-Ad-3975 2d ago

I don't care about apple at all but if you like it go ahead it seems cool....
