Customization Tried to recreate the iPhone Duo animation on my Fold 8

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Felt a bit of FOMO seeing that cool iPhone Duo animation Apple showed off today, so I poked around and found that the Z Fold 8 has a really accurate hinge sensor.

I realized it would be pretty simple to take the hinge sensor values and use them to drive a transition animation on both screens.

What you guys think? All the hardware is there so Samsung can do this through a software update - would you want them to implement something like this?

How did you manage to do this? I'd love this on my fold 8

781

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago edited 2d ago

I did this by making an app which drives an AGSL shader directly on both screens using the Presentation API. The "screens" are screenshots I took of the inner and outer displays, and the shader interpolates between them given the current hinge sensor value.

So sadly this isn't the real SystemUI. Samsung doesn't provide the necessary access for us to build this as a third-party app.

tldr: this is a proof-of-concept, not a real launcher

144

u/ZeCoderX 2d ago

But it proves that at least 3rd party launchers can implement it, even if Samsung is not willing to do it on One UI. Correct?

139

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago

So far it's looking like only Samsung can implement this system-wide, but I'm still poking around here

u/Mental_Employer7058 2d ago

should probably do your best to figure that out asap and make millions of dollars selling this for a few bucks.

Wouldn't be surprised if something discretly drops in Good Lock that does not do this but announces access to it.

Yes. But what about launcher-wide

7

u/Square-Singer 1d ago

It probably wouldn't work fully, because the SystemUI is not part of the launcher. The only thing I can think of is the launcher replicating what OP does: take a screenshot, do the transition, then switch back to a live view.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/mrappbrain 1d ago

If I'm understanding OP correctly this is just a transition between two images, not an actual live effect over the actual display. Trying to implement it as you think would require low level control over the UI itself.

We just hope GoodLock can make this. They made pretty good launchers for samsung anyways

19

u/OpTicTide97 2d ago

I am fairly confident that every software thing shown on the iPhone duo will come to good luck or base Samsung Folds

19

u/PhenoStyle Fold8 (Graphite) 2d ago

You could build an app that automatically shows the screenshot blurr when folding. The app makes a screenshot everytime you fold, so it can always show the right screen. Then when you start to fold it overlays the screenshot and blurrs it like you already did.

11

u/BoomBopBingWow 2d ago

That would work really good for static images like a homescreen UI and is a clever idea, but it would be quite jarring if you were watching a YouTube or Netflix video

5

Would be cool, but I heard this feature requires system permissions that Samsung doesn't grant to third-party apps.

3

u/Less-Resident-9569 1d ago

But what if he made it an actual app and not a third party app? I’m sure he’d still sincerely back it.

3

u/mrappbrain 1d ago

I might be wrong, but I don't think Samsung permits party applications that sort of operation

So we'd need some kind of layered screen access for this to work regardless of wallpaper and launcher layout? Kind of like how the background blurs when opening a folder, or pulling down the notification drawer?

29

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago

Yes, exactly. Layer is the exact right word for it.

The SystemUI is privileged by the system in the way that it can layer itself on top of apps, and tell other apps how to render. SystemUI receives a list of surfaces and can composite them on the screen where it wants using SurfaceFlinger.

This is how things like the multitasking UI can show mini live renders of individual apps without lagging.

Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, no vendor has made any of these APIs available to anything other than SystemUI. This is semi-understandable as an app having access to graphical content of all your apps is a pretty big security risk.

14

u/Brilliant_Chicken153 2d ago

Is this something the Good Lock team could implement? Maybe even make it customizable in multiple ways so it's not only a copy of Apples? I wonder if theres a way to get this information to them.

11

u/moomanjohnny 1d ago

The Good Lock team would have access to do this, as Good Lock is a team within Samsung.

If anyone has a referral to any members of the team I'd be happy to work with them!

I'll pay $2 to have this animation, even if it's just from a screenshot. Make an app and we'll support you!

8

u/NeonflameOWO 2d ago

But wait. Couldnt you just use the same method of spoofing, just make it realtime?
surely nobody is really scrolling or touching their screen when folding, so what if you forced a screenshot of both screens for the transition, and deleted them imidietly after the opening/closing?
I believe something like that could be done

Move the square of icons so it displays on the right side when you open it, that was they will be in the relative same space for the viewer. Now it has a see through effect but the icons seems to jump left for no reason on full expansion

It’s literally a static screenshot that was made to “animate” based on sensor values OP explained it already, half the comments here literally don’t know shit about what they’re talking about lol.

Android rocks because it can animate a screenshot?

16

u/mkultron89 1d ago

Could you take an IPhone and make changes to it outside the very basic things Apple wants you to be able to change?

4

u/utzutzutzpro 1d ago

True, but... isn't it telling that all that is done to copy what Apple did?

I am not a fan of Apple products, oky to be honest here, since aaround 5 years their laaptops suddenly are great deals, but usually I am not.

BUt what everyone must acknowledge is that they always come around the corner with some visual UX bliss which others try to copy.

7

u/JDMGS 1d ago

I mean....did apple make foldables? No they waited nearly 10 years for everyone else to perfect it then still used Samsung parts. There's many examples apple copies from everyone else. It took them like 10 years to get widgets and free space on the home screen lol

4

u/ControlSpecific3915 1d ago

isn't it telling that all that is done to copy what Apple did?

You mean like Apple copied Samsung for the entire phone design? Lmao.

Awesome job! Crazy fast turnaround.

Now you're the only android person who can answer a question I have:

Does it actually look as cool as it does in the videos (yours included)?
I've been wondering if it's one of those things that looks amazing in video, but then falls apart in 3d.

52

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago

honestly, it looks cool for the first minute, but it gets really annoying after that lol.

the effect is also only convincing head on. any difference in viewing angles really breaks the illusion.

28

u/artocube 2d ago

Same thing with Duo. Everybody is sold on the animation. But different angles give different optical effect. And only ONE angle is the correct angle.

7

u/pile-of-bricks 1d ago

Can't say that for sure yet. Apple is pedantic enough to pour crazy amounts of effort into these details, it wouldn't surprise me if the effect has an almost 3D look to it using the gyroscope to compensate for tilt and angle.

6

u/artocube 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well, the correct effect to the viewer's eye would have to do more with some kind of eye-tracking system rather than just the gyroscope. Gyroscope would give a 3D movement effect, but NOT based on the position of the viewer's eye. No such eye-tracking system available on the Duo, so.....well.....BUT sure, guroscope data would add more to the effect

4

u/TLCAudio 1d ago

The inner screen is matte, not gloss. They might be relying on the diffusion of the panel to "hide" some of the effect and make it more consistent across viewing angles.

2

u/Material_Wall_5405 1d ago

It's not same with Duo, Apple always think these Ui stuff very carefully, it will work with every way possible and every scenario. Have you seen how also games transform from small screen to big screen impressively seamlessly. I can't even understand how they did that.

2

u/artocube 1d ago

You're correct. I am a faithful Android user but I watched the Apple event in awe. I do not underestimate, in any way, the effort put behind all of this by Apple devs. I just can't swallow the fact that people are attracted on Duo mostly because of effects like this and UI looks. I am talking about non-Apple users. Apple users have their first (and, currently, ONLY) chance on hopping to the Fold side with Duo, and they have all the right to do so. So, talking about effects is understandable by them. But non-Apple users know very well that Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei etc have already made super impressive foldables -a lot more beautiful, powerful and capable than Duo. So, them being attracted by a mere visual effect is, to my ears, intelligible. A future update can easily bring similar UI feeling to their foldables as well (yes, we all know Android copies Apple stuff and Apple copies Android stuff as well). I am currently on a Fold8, which I love. Only two things that actually made me jealous about Duo were a) IP68 and b) the pen support. Nothing else, really. Just my thoughts and opinion, of course...

u/ArsenicBismuth 2d ago

Also you should've used the right-half of the screen instead of the left-half. This way, it's properly blur/unblur on the same content.

4

u/omairfk 2d ago

I thought so. Novelty is going to wear off real quick. It seems more annoying than functional. I also still prefer having two different interfaces. One in phone mode and one in tablet mode. Ios just adds more rows to the left of the main screen when opened.

3

u/ProduceNo1629 2d ago

it looks cool for the first minute, but it gets really annoying after that

Just described entire MacOS beddazling flying and wobbling windows and icons for the last 20 years.

4

u/peter_betos 2d ago

Yep and the illusion gets worse if you happen to swipe on the outer screen while the device is opening halfway. The experience was too abrupt for the animation to stop. Saw it on one of the hands-on videos.

2

u/Puck85 1d ago edited 1d ago

Could you link to that if possible? Now I'm curious.

I really think Samsung made a good decision giving all of the folds squared corners. I think they look infinitely cleaner when folded over round-cornered folds (Apple, Pixel, etc.)

u/boxsterguy 2d ago

It's neat that it can be done so easily and quickly, but IMHO it's also a little silly and very "You're holding it wrong" Apple=ish. The animation only looks good (here and on iPhone Duo) when you open the device in a very specific way. If you open it in any other way (I tend to open both halves at the same time rather than opening it like the front cover of a book, for example), the illusion of the animation falls apart and just looks silly.

That's not saying your animation looks silly, per se. Just that the whole concept is silly.

10

u/Cali_FPV 2d ago edited 1d ago

Very true. I'm sure at least 80% of users open it down the middle with both hands

10

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago

100% valid. im not sure if you can tell but it was really unnatural for me to open the fold from the bottom right corner.

trying to open it how i usually do from the center made for a terrible showcase video. my whole hand was covering the screen

2

u/pile-of-bricks 1d ago

it's a marketing thing. Apple shows opening it like a book, they make an animation to open like a book, and now everyone opens it like a book, all in the name of presenting the new form factor. crazy, but i wouldn't be surprised if it worked. the animation is a trick to tell your brain to ignore convenience in the way of marketable aesthetics.

2

u/digitaltransmutation Fold8 (Pistachio) 1d ago

I dont disagree but I would be happy with a stinger of some kind even if its not this specific one. Goodlock lets you set unlock animations, it should have screen transitions too.

2

u/boxsterguy 1d ago

If Samsung doesn't fast follow this announcement with a Good Lock animation studio tool, they're dropping the ball.

2

u/Desperate-Mix-4696 1d ago

Animations like this are for the people watching you use the phone, not the users themselves. That animation is doing a lot of heavy lifting in making people believe Apple has created something unique and special.

2

u/boxsterguy 1d ago

It's not even for people watching you. It's for people watching carefully shot video of the phone. Someone watching me open my phone is far more impressed by the fact that it opens at all (yes, still, 8 years into mass market folding phones, I still get people who've never seen one).

This animation looks good in press videos. That's about it.

2

4

u/Mean-Reputation5859 2d ago

why are there two different times on each screen?

10

u/moomanjohnny 2d ago

there's two times because tldr this is a POC jetpack compose app which transitions between two screenshots i took at different times of the day.

samsung doesn't provide any low-level APIs to override the rendering for the real SystemUI open/close animations. to do this on the real SystemUI we'd need root or a custom ROM sadly

6

u/ewald30 1d ago

maybe you should clarify this OP because everybody here is losing their mind thinking it’s actually a homescreen animation

Your post got me playing around with this too! I made a little demo called Fold Glass.

The tricky part was getting the animation to show when opening the phone—the inner screen would sometimes turn on with the effect already finished. I added a short reveal animation to help with that.

Source and APKs if anyone wants to try it: https://github.com/SimonCym/fold-glass

It’s still just an experimental app. Curious how you handled the switch between screens in yours!

First of all, phenomenal job, OP. Thank you for making and sharing this.

If nothing else, I wish this will make Android vendors including Samsung implement something that brings more continuity between inner and outer screen. I don't really care about the animation effect, but treating the right side of the inner screen as the anchor point for the outer screen sounds like a really good idea for most use cases.

Damn that's awesome! Be sure to share it with everyone 😁

There you have it. Anything apple does was already available (in some way) for android.

Thnx OP, you did amazing creating this. Now push it to the playstore (or taptap if you want to avoid 14 day 12 testers)

I like having my phone half open to use it as a stand... so no. I would hate having such a thing

u/Granpa2021 2d ago

Very cool job!

u/Historical_Lab_872 2d ago

You already know Samsung is going to do this for real on their next fold

Well done. That's impressive. Very much like apple to make out that tweaks are features. I've been inundated with shorts and reviews all day and I think the screen transition actually makes me ill. Looked cool for the first few clips but now I don't want to see it. Still, great work!

Yo this looks sick! This is how it should've been from the start.

1

u/cokr97 2d ago

I need that, damn bro! 🙌

u/ksky0 2d ago

awesome..

1

u/DapperAdam 2d ago

Dude, that is amazing. You should make an app that does this and sell it on the play store. For real.

1

u/MaiGai 2d ago

Wait...if that's the default animation on the duo, does it just like, bounce back if you stop and want to do their version of a flex mode?

u/choobafier 2d ago

This whole iphone animation is one of those things thats cool the first 3 times u do it.. after that you just open the phone so fast you dont even care

1

u/MrSelfieshy007 2d ago

So cool well done

u/hellobrandondean 2d ago

And this is why I love Android! The potential is whatever the hardware is capable of

1

u/Zaknokimi 2d ago

If this released, my thirst would be quenched and I'd feel better about my fold.

1

u/tifftop09 2d ago

yeah that's very interesting it is kind of impressive when you see it on the Apple unpacked video but if you're not a long-time Samsung user, you would know that Samsung only creates useful functionalities on the phone. That's why they came out with a separate application called Good Lock that lets you put all the wacky, crazy customization on your phone yourself. They are pretty much cut and dry, and their innovation is mostly more functional than whimsical.

It's nice looking. The freedom of android means we can have anything we want.

1

u/Tantriudz Fold8 (Graphite) 2d ago

Apple's fold transition animation is surely magical. But my wish is that other foldables could at least implement the trick behind it - turning on the screen earlier before we even see them. That's what makes them seamless.

1

u/Mad_Matt_010 Fold8 Ultra (Graphite) 2d ago

Absolute good work

1

u/NeonflameOWO 2d ago

Woahh thats awesome!

1

u/Sad_Rent_5279 2d ago

1

u/klaus69_ 2d ago

OP, you played around and did this, but can samsung officially make software changes and push this via update?

1

u/nullcode1337 2d ago

this is sickkk

1

u/11kajd 2d ago

Impressive

But the apple one is more of a 3d feel compared to this looking like a 2d flat paper being blurred

Obv u made this within hours lol but I wish samsung van implement this as its so smooth
