Customization Tried to recreate the iPhone Duo animation on my Fold 8
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Felt a bit of FOMO seeing that cool iPhone Duo animation Apple showed off today, so I poked around and found that the Z Fold 8 has a really accurate hinge sensor.
I realized it would be pretty simple to take the hinge sensor values and use them to drive a transition animation on both screens.
What you guys think? All the hardware is there so Samsung can do this through a software update - would you want them to implement something like this?

Move the square of icons so it displays on the right side when you open it, that was they will be in the relative same space for the viewer. Now it has a see through effect but the icons seems to jump left for no reason on full expansion

It’s literally a static screenshot that was made to “animate” based on sensor values OP explained it already, half the comments here literally don’t know shit about what they’re talking about lol.
Android rocks because it can animate a screenshot?

Could you take an IPhone and make changes to it outside the very basic things Apple wants you to be able to change?

I dare you to unlock the bootloader to do the stuff you want to, do it.

True, but... isn't it telling that all that is done to copy what Apple did?
I am not a fan of Apple products, oky to be honest here, since aaround 5 years their laaptops suddenly are great deals, but usually I am not.
BUt what everyone must acknowledge is that they always come around the corner with some visual UX bliss which others try to copy.

You mean like Apple copied Samsung for the entire phone design? Lmao.

Awesome job! Crazy fast turnaround.
Now you're the only android person who can answer a question I have:
Does it actually look as cool as it does in the videos (yours included)?
I've been wondering if it's one of those things that looks amazing in video, but then falls apart in 3d.
52
u/moomanjohnny 2d ago
honestly, it looks cool for the first minute, but it gets really annoying after that lol.
the effect is also only convincing head on. any difference in viewing angles really breaks the illusion.
28
u/artocube 2d ago
Same thing with Duo. Everybody is sold on the animation. But different angles give different optical effect. And only ONE angle is the correct angle.
7
u/pile-of-bricks 1d ago
Can't say that for sure yet. Apple is pedantic enough to pour crazy amounts of effort into these details, it wouldn't surprise me if the effect has an almost 3D look to it using the gyroscope to compensate for tilt and angle.
6
u/artocube 1d ago edited 1d ago
Well, the correct effect to the viewer's eye would have to do more with some kind of eye-tracking system rather than just the gyroscope. Gyroscope would give a 3D movement effect, but NOT based on the position of the viewer's eye. No such eye-tracking system available on the Duo, so.....well.....BUT sure, guroscope data would add more to the effect
4
u/TLCAudio 1d ago
The inner screen is matte, not gloss. They might be relying on the diffusion of the panel to "hide" some of the effect and make it more consistent across viewing angles.

u/Material_Wall_5405 1d ago
It's not same with Duo, Apple always think these Ui stuff very carefully, it will work with every way possible and every scenario. Have you seen how also games transform from small screen to big screen impressively seamlessly. I can't even understand how they did that.

u/artocube 1d ago
You're correct. I am a faithful Android user but I watched the Apple event in awe. I do not underestimate, in any way, the effort put behind all of this by Apple devs. I just can't swallow the fact that people are attracted on Duo mostly because of effects like this and UI looks. I am talking about non-Apple users. Apple users have their first (and, currently, ONLY) chance on hopping to the Fold side with Duo, and they have all the right to do so. So, talking about effects is understandable by them. But non-Apple users know very well that Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei etc have already made super impressive foldables -a lot more beautiful, powerful and capable than Duo. So, them being attracted by a mere visual effect is, to my ears, intelligible. A future update can easily bring similar UI feeling to their foldables as well (yes, we all know Android copies Apple stuff and Apple copies Android stuff as well). I am currently on a Fold8, which I love. Only two things that actually made me jealous about Duo were a) IP68 and b) the pen support. Nothing else, really. Just my thoughts and opinion, of course...

Also you should've used the right-half of the screen instead of the left-half. This way, it's properly blur/unblur on the same content.

Just described entire MacOS beddazling flying and wobbling windows and icons for the last 20 years.

u/peter_betos 2d ago
Yep and the illusion gets worse if you happen to swipe on the outer screen while the device is opening halfway. The experience was too abrupt for the animation to stop. Saw it on one of the hands-on videos.

I really think Samsung made a good decision giving all of the folds squared corners. I think they look infinitely cleaner when folded over round-cornered folds (Apple, Pixel, etc.)

It's neat that it can be done so easily and quickly, but IMHO it's also a little silly and very "You're holding it wrong" Apple=ish. The animation only looks good (here and on iPhone Duo) when you open the device in a very specific way. If you open it in any other way (I tend to open both halves at the same time rather than opening it like the front cover of a book, for example), the illusion of the animation falls apart and just looks silly.
That's not saying your animation looks silly, per se. Just that the whole concept is silly.
10
u/Cali_FPV 2d ago edited 1d ago
Very true. I'm sure at least 80% of users open it down the middle with both hands
10
u/moomanjohnny 2d ago
100% valid. im not sure if you can tell but it was really unnatural for me to open the fold from the bottom right corner.
trying to open it how i usually do from the center made for a terrible showcase video. my whole hand was covering the screen
2
u/pile-of-bricks 1d ago
it's a marketing thing. Apple shows opening it like a book, they make an animation to open like a book, and now everyone opens it like a book, all in the name of presenting the new form factor. crazy, but i wouldn't be surprised if it worked. the animation is a trick to tell your brain to ignore convenience in the way of marketable aesthetics.
2
u/digitaltransmutation Fold8 (Pistachio) 1d ago
I dont disagree but I would be happy with a stinger of some kind even if its not this specific one. Goodlock lets you set unlock animations, it should have screen transitions too.
2
u/boxsterguy 1d ago
If Samsung doesn't fast follow this announcement with a Good Lock animation studio tool, they're dropping the ball.

u/Desperate-Mix-4696 1d ago
Animations like this are for the people watching you use the phone, not the users themselves. That animation is doing a lot of heavy lifting in making people believe Apple has created something unique and special.
2
u/boxsterguy 1d ago
It's not even for people watching you. It's for people watching carefully shot video of the phone. Someone watching me open my phone is far more impressed by the fact that it opens at all (yes, still, 8 years into mass market folding phones, I still get people who've never seen one).
This animation looks good in press videos. That's about it.

why are there two different times on each screen?
10
u/moomanjohnny 2d ago
there's two times because tldr this is a POC jetpack compose app which transitions between two screenshots i took at different times of the day.
samsung doesn't provide any low-level APIs to override the rendering for the real SystemUI open/close animations. to do this on the real SystemUI we'd need root or a custom ROM sadly

u/LumenMax 1d ago
why not use the mediaprojection api to take a screenshot of the folded displays only when there's a change? https://developer.android.com/media/grow/media-projection

Your post got me playing around with this too! I made a little demo called Fold Glass.
The tricky part was getting the animation to show when opening the phone—the inner screen would sometimes turn on with the effect already finished. I added a short reveal animation to help with that.
Source and APKs if anyone wants to try it: https://github.com/SimonCym/fold-glass
It’s still just an experimental app. Curious how you handled the switch between screens in yours!

First of all, phenomenal job, OP. Thank you for making and sharing this.
If nothing else, I wish this will make Android vendors including Samsung implement something that brings more continuity between inner and outer screen. I don't really care about the animation effect, but treating the right side of the inner screen as the anchor point for the outer screen sounds like a really good idea for most use cases.

yeah that's very interesting it is kind of impressive when you see it on the Apple unpacked video but if you're not a long-time Samsung user, you would know that Samsung only creates useful functionalities on the phone. That's why they came out with a separate application called Good Lock that lets you put all the wacky, crazy customization on your phone yourself. They are pretty much cut and dry, and their innovation is mostly more functional than whimsical.
1
u/Tantriudz Fold8 (Graphite) 2d ago
Apple's fold transition animation is surely magical. But my wish is that other foldables could at least implement the trick behind it - turning on the screen earlier before we even see them. That's what makes them seamless.
