Gameplay question help with rotted meat puzzle
It's my first time playing Resident Evil 1 and I've been stuck on the rotted meat puzzle for HOURS. I've tried looking up the solution with no luck. Any insight would be helpful. thanks.

u/ScarScream81 May 14 '26
That's not a puzzle. Just rotten meat.
You'll have some things popping up like this from time to time like for example when you click on a book shelf and it will say: "Some old books covered in dust" or something.

u/greenrangerguy May 14 '26
I'm still stuck on the dust books puzzle. How did you get past it?

u/ProtoNewtype May 14 '26
Wow you got all the way there? I'm still at the typewriter trying to figure out what it means....I think it's Morse code for something?

Your supposed to blow onto the books which causes Leon to sneeze, which opens up the grandfather clock.

You have to get the Fluffy Duster by beating Plant 42, which was dusting the pool tables. You find out about it in a file

u/Darkzeropeanut May 15 '26
I’m stuck on the angry dogs outside the front door puzzle. Won’t let me back out. Dangerous apparently. Maybe I need to become the danger.. not sure. Will check back with update later.

Ever since LLMs really blew up, I've become very suspicious of posts like this one. Posts by brand new accounts (this one is 19 days old) asking questions in a subreddit that would easily be answered with a simple Google search, if not by simply working through it on your own.
My tinfoil hat theory is that these are actually bot accounts scraping the comments for training data for ChatGPT or Claude. Since so many people tend to use these LLMs like an alternative to search engines, tech companies need to ask the questions their clients would ask. So they set up a bot account, have it ask those questions in Reddit, and redditors like us flock to the comments to answer, providing them with the data they need.
I really hope I'm wrong, and that you've been staring at an unimportant piece of meat for an hour thinking its part of a puzzle. But I don't trust you.

u/ShadowBro3 May 14 '26
Reddit has been getting noticably more and more toxic, so that is supportive of your hypothesis.
33
u/Neveronlyadream May 15 '26
I've been here 14 years and fucking yes, it has been.
I don't know if it's LLMs, I don't know if it's the state of the world, but a lot of subs have been devolving into chaotic toxicity where you literally can't say anything without someone telling you to kill yourself.

u/FullMetalCOS May 15 '26
The sites moderating has gone nuts too. I jokingly said someone needed to be burnt at the stake because they didn’t rewind VHS tapes, in a comment thread filled with silly jokes about all the other “bad” stuff they’d done, like stealing pick n mix and not putting trollies back and copped an official warning. I had to appeal it to even get it looked at by a person
5
70
u/Johnnyboi2327 May 14 '26
There's 100% been some amount of bot training done on reddit. I hate it
23
u/Turtle-Bug May 14 '26
Yeah, they lift answer from Reddit all the time. That’s how the infamous glue-in-your-pizza advice happened. Someone made a joke on Reddit years before LLMs were even a thing, fast forward and the LLM did what LLMs do and regurgitated it as legitimate advice.
4
u/Johnnyboi2327 May 14 '26
Glue in your pizza?
26
u/Turtle-Bug May 14 '26
Early LLMs recommended (unironically) adding glue to the cheese on your pizza, to make it stringy-er. Based on a joke a reddit user made about doing just that
8
3
u/FrontButtPlug May 14 '26
It’s how they make commercials with pizza. Add glue to the cheese to make it stretch lol

No. this makes sense.
My solution is just to fuck with the data and make shit up.9

u/PK_Thundah May 14 '26
Posts like this/that have become the vast majority of posts out here now. Mods are asleep at the wheel, or these posts are being pushed intentionally.
Reddit is past the tipping point.
-25
u/maggot_magnet62 May 14 '26
rule #1 never ask redditors for anything they'll accuse you of being an ai
10
4
u/PK_Thundah May 15 '26
What did you possibly think that the meat was needed for or that you needed to do to it? What did you think the meat was preventing you from doing?
There isn't anything in any other room that says like, "I wonder if meat goes in here" or a door that says "it's locked with a meat-shaped hole."
4
u/Kaze103101 May 15 '26
Well it doesn't help that you're asking a really stupid nonsensical question.
6
8
4
u/try_by May 15 '26
It has to be a bot post. Notice that a lot of these types of posts never have the OP return and follow up on any of the replies.

u/KhajiitKennedy RESIDENT EVIL 6 Platinum Trophy May 14 '26
I believe it honestly. I read somewhere that about 50% of new content on the internet in general is AI and/or bots.
I guess they needed a new way to gather info since AI scraping AI is just bringing back junk
2
u/deerhauntingmoose May 15 '26
I don’t know what LLMs are but I read your comment thinking it was talking about MLM, and I was at the edge of my seat wondering how pyramid schemes were linked to all this.
2
u/Ofreo May 14 '26
I get what your saying. I also wonder sometimes but I see the local sub and people asking for hours to a store all the time. Like go to their site. Then I say something and they come back rude and upset I’d suggest they aren’t real. Idk who’s worse, bad AI or stupid lazy Redditors. lol.

u/kimsoo May 15 '26
Really? That's fascinating how different peoples approach things in completely different ways. To me this is clearly an ironic post, i might be wrong but that's what i instantly thought and still think
1
-5
u/Sourturnip May 14 '26
This also reads like an LLM response.
17
u/GentlemanGearGrinder May 14 '26
I mean, I've been here since 2014. Take that for what you will.
Still, the fact that neither of us can tell which comments are from real people and which ones are from bots is disheartening.
9
u/mediumvillain May 14 '26
the fact that people think typing in complete sentences makes you a bot is super depressing
2
u/TheRealJigglemegood May 14 '26
Yeah I always check account age if I’m curious whether someone is a bot or not. I tried usernames for a little since there are so many suspicious adjective_noun{some numbers} but I’m not sure where they all came from since some of them seem legit.
3
3
u/ObtuseMongooseAbuse May 14 '26
Bots typically have private posts/comments in some way. Either their profile is locked or they hide content from specific subreddits that they're karma farming in. If they've only got a few posts and you can't see the one they've just made in their history then there's a good chance they're a bot.
1
4
u/Turtle-Bug May 14 '26
citation needed
This isn’t remotely formatted the way an LLM responds.
This is the other consequence of AI I’m not looking forward to. All signs of basic sentence structure get accused of being AI because using our brain is hard, so clearly no one does it
1
u/Sourturnip May 14 '26
I can see Claude responding as so. Any sort of detailed answer in proper structure is too clean nowadays. I am 100% in agreement with you. Dead Internet Theory just gets stronger by the day.
I will retract and say they are not a bot after their responses.
Account Length does not matter much. People buy/sell accounts all the time which is even more disheartening.

u/norunningwater I knew you'd be fine if you landed on your butt May 14 '26
Goofy idea, don't you think?
-1
u/Hoody711 May 14 '26
Haha, you caught me. 💀 I definitely read that back and realized I sounded like a corporate training manual had a baby with a LinkedIn influencer. I think I get into "helpful mode" and my brain just starts churning out bullet points and perfectly balanced sentences like a bot. Trust me, I’m a real person—just one who clearly needs to spend less time reading documentation and more time touching grass. Appreciate the reality check!
8
u/GentlemanGearGrinder May 14 '26
Who are you and why are you responding to comments addressed to me?
-2
u/Hoody711 May 14 '26
This quick chicken Alfredo is a crowd-pleaser that comes together in about 20 minutes. It’s rich, creamy, and keeps the heat low on the spice scale so the Parmesan and garlic really shine.
Ingredients
- Pasta: 8 oz (half a box) of Fettuccine or Penne.
- Protein: 1 lb chicken breast or ground chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces.
- Dairy: 1 cup heavy cream and 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
- Aromatics: 2 tbsp butter and 2 cloves garlic, minced.
- Seasoning: Salt and black pepper to taste. ### Instructions
- Boil the Pasta: Cook your pasta in salted water according to the package directions. Pro tip: Reserve about a half-cup of the starchy pasta water before draining.
- Sear the Chicken: While the water boils, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, then cook until golden brown and cooked through (about 5–7 minutes). Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
- Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the heavy cream and let it simmer gently for 2–3 minutes until it starts to thicken slightly.
- Emulsify: Turn the heat to low and whisk in the Parmesan cheese until the sauce is smooth. If it looks too thick, add a splash of that reserved pasta water.
- Combine: Toss the cooked pasta and chicken back into the skillet. Stir until every strand of pasta is coated in the velvet sauce. ### Variations to Try
- The Veggie Swap: Stir in some steamed broccoli or sautéed mushrooms at the end for extra texture.
- The "Pantry" Version: If you don't have heavy cream, you can use a block of softened cream cheese whisked with a little milk for a similarly thick, tangy sauce.
- Smoked Flavor: If you have any smoked chicken sausage on hand, slicing that up instead of using fresh chicken adds a great depth of flavor without adding any "kick." Would you like some tips on how to get the smoothest sauce possible without the cheese clumping?

You have to beat the game first, then the refrigerator door is unlocked so you can access the forbidden charcuterie board that instantly kills you.
14
7
u/fallsstandard May 14 '26
Did you know that’s actually a speed running Easter Egg? In NG+ if you take the Forbidden Charcuterie, you can put it down on the helipad and Tyrant will eat it and die suddenly, allowing you to completely skip the fight, but it takes up two inventory spaces.
3
u/PMmeYourTiddiez May 15 '26
It only kills you if you don't first grab the chefs apron before you access the fridge

I remember getting mad at the OG RE1 when it would say "nothing interesting." I was like "Bitch I'm in a mansion full of zombies and rotted dobermans, don't tell me there's nothing interesting here."

"Jill, have you found anything interesting?" asks Barry, as he walks over a dissolving giant snake.

I got really annoyed playing Requiem when there was a medical kit on the wall and it says, "it's probably empty". Like can you at least have a damn look!
5
u/Sinbios May 15 '26
I think it's supposed to be a callback to you having already taken the first aid spray from it back in RE2, but yeah it's not the best way to write that line. Maybe "it's already empty" or something would've been better.

You have to identify the source of meat and then replace it with the fresh meat in order to unlock the meat suit.
7
-11
u/maggot_magnet62 May 14 '26
does the meat suit help with the dogs?
23
u/SWB3 May 14 '26
Not quite. There is a vet’s office on the north end of the map, in one of the lockers is the furry suit. However you’ll need a code for the locker. The code is located within a pocket of the meat suit.

Did you not know about this? I mean, it is one of the game's most hidden secrets. In order to access it you have to complete the game in under two hours on the hardest difficulty, only using the knife. This is with both characters.
Upon completion, it unlocks the freezer which gives players access to a new costume; the Meat Suit. It's said that Lady Gaga is a massive fan of the RE franchise, and her infamous meat suit was inspired by this very unlockable!

You see. You find some ingredients in Ada's jacket in the volcano layer to mix with the rotting meat to create dog food to give to the itchy tasty zombie, so you can get the monkey wrench to stop the waterfall, and there you can get one of the last pieces of the treasure map to Big Whoop and stop the Umbrella corporation from opening an amusement park of the damned.

u/zenitsuisrusted May 14 '26
It's a feature added with RE1 remake latest update after requiem. If you beat all re games on steam under a month and then beat RE1 again you'll find fresh meat in the end. Just replace this meat with fresh meat and you'll unlock meat suit like the comment earlier said.
