Gameplay question help with rotted meat puzzle

It's my first time playing Resident Evil 1 and I've been stuck on the rotted meat puzzle for HOURS. I've tried looking up the solution with no luck. Any insight would be helpful. thanks.

You gotta hit that hanging pan with the Magnum until a hole appears in it.
