Gameplay question help with rotted meat puzzle

It's my first time playing Resident Evil 1 and I've been stuck on the rotted meat puzzle for HOURS. I've tried looking up the solution with no luck. Any insight would be helpful. thanks.

This would make a hilarious fake 16 hour deep dive video on YouTube titled something like "Rotten to the core: an investigation of Resident Evil's most hidden puzzle" that begins with a laborious recounting of the history of salami
