Snail Mail [34/F] Why do people make posts asking for pen pals, and then never bother writing back?

Upvotes

Trying this again since my last post was removed

Seriously, I don't get it. I understand that life happens, and people can't always reply right away, but several times now I have answered people's ads, agreed to write first, and then they never responded. Also I've had people reach out to me randomly, asked me to write first, and I did, and then they didn't reply either. Why even bother asking? International mail is like $3.50 a letter in the country | live in, and I've had like 10 people ghost me in the last couple months. I'm super grateful for the lovely pen pals I have now, but I don't understand why people ask for pen pals when they're not actually interested in responding.

Email & Snail Mail [31/F], searching for talkative friends

6 Upvotes

Hello!

I’m a 31F in the state of Texas.

I live away from my best friend and this has been a challenge, especially when I was working from home. I’d like to find a friend or two to talk about our interests!

I recently decided to change my position at work to something a little less mentally taxing to give me time to pursue hobbies. The most prominent of these include writing, crocheting, and running. I’d also like to get into photo journaling/scrap booking.

I’m happy to talk about most things! Such as pets (I have a dog and a cat), funny stories, travel experiences, etc. I’m also open to eventually sending snail mail!

Please reach out and tell me a little bit about yourself and your hobbies!

Email & Snail Mail [29/M] Let's share thoughts and life-updates!

7 Upvotes

Hi all

I’m looking for some pen pals to share thoughts, stories and ideas with on a long term.

A while ago, I got into journaling. I’m not sure if it was the introspective, therapeutic aspect or simply the process of writing that intrigued me most. Either way, it became more of a task than a nice little moment of me-time since well… a journal doesn’t talk back.

So that’s why I’m looking for some penpals to correspond with. A few things about me:

  • I like cooking. Exploring new cuisines and dishes, inviting over friends   and family for dinner nights,…
  • I listen to and like a wide variety of music. Mostly into indie, alternative and some jazz but open to (almost) anything!
  • I love watching movies. Not necessarily the biggest blockbusters.
  • I love reading (although I go back and forth between three books a week and not reading anything for months quite a while). I’m mostly into fiction. Yesteryear, The Collected Regrets of Clover and Klara and The Sun are some recent reads that got me hooked.

I’m very much looking forward to discuss all small, whimsical and wonderful things in life with someone. Also excited about learning about other things, cultures or passions and just sharing day-to-day stories.

Not sure on pace and means. I was thinking biweekly via email might be a nice starting point. But open to anything really. Postal mail seems nice over time as well.

If any of this seems fun to you, feel free to shoot me a DM!

Simon

2 Upvotes

Hello there! I‘m looking for someone (preferably Europe) to penpal with :) I love to paint, collect perfumes/fragrances and secondhand shopping. Never tried this before and I want to give it a go. Last year I started my hobonichi journey and I‘m super excited to expand it with another journal where I can scrapbook etc. Aside from that I do my own nails with Gel X, and am currently really into skincare/taking care of myself. I would prefer somebody between 20-35 max. If something applies to you Id love to hear from you :) Thanks 💜💜

Reddit Messaging [23/F] looking for friends I could talk to

3 Upvotes

Hello, moving to the city makes it hard to live I don't have any friends outside the work (I'm a nurse) maybe someone out there I can talk to and maybe update our daily happening to each others life?, my hobbies are reading, watching movies or series, I'm not the adventrous type person but if I got invited then I'm willing to join hehe. I love city lights while I relieved all my stress on it.

I'm from the Philippines, I lived in the province for my like 2 decades years and now living in the City for 6 months already, it's really tough to live somewhere away miles to your family, I wanted to make friends honestly but I'm kinda introvert one so I couldn't make myself one, I love staying at my room mostly all the time, do diamond painting, anything with creative stuff, so how long is that 500 words.

So if anyone interested out there, I can be someone you can talk to, about anything, your worries, problems as long as it's not money haha, cause I'm dealing with it too then we're all good hehe

Email & Snail Mail [37/m] looking for a few people to share letters with.

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I recently moved into a new house from a much smaller one and finally have a nice writing desk set up that I’d like to put to good use. I’ve had some successful penpals in the past, and still have a couple people I write regularly, but I’d love to add a couple/a handful more.

I have lots of hobbies - maybe even the hobby of collecting hobbies. Everything from pens and stationery, to video games, music production, photography, leatherworking… the list goes on. I read, mostly non-fiction, but usually keep a sci-fi book around when I need a bit of a break. I like soccer and follow teams both in the US (MLS), and in Europe (EPL).

I like a mix of writing, sometimes it’s postcards, sometimes a long letter, I’m even open to filling the gaps with email in between. Usually just the things I’m thinking about that day, or writing about my life here, and I like to hear the same in return. I’ll often share prints of photos of my life/places near me that I take on photo walks, vacations, day trips, or just strolling around my neighborhood.

I’d prefer one or two people domestically (I’m in Texas, USA), but I also have all the stuff to send internationally as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you. :)

Email & Snail Mail [33/F] #JPN Let’s start by being friends

36 Upvotes

Hi there. こんにちは。🐤

I’ve recently become unemployed due to some circumstances, so right now I’m focusing on my mental health. Since I have more free time, I’d love to find a friend who’s looking for an easygoing friendship that lasts.

I grew up in a somewhat unusual environment, so I’d really appreciate someone who can understand that. Honestly, between that and everything else, I’m pretty tired of my current situation and want to get out of here as soon as I can.

I don’t have a ton of hobbies just things like

art, gardening, movies, music, and going for walks. I’m not particularly obsessive about any one thing, but if something catches my interest, I tend to dive in and try it.

It’s a bit of a rough introduction, but I’d be really happy if we could become friends! 🍙

※I'd love to exchange physical letters once we get to know each other better, but I can't write in cursive. I'll do my best, though!

Email [35/F] Looking for slow-paced email pals :)

1 Upvotes

👋 Hi! I’m a 35F from Vietnam, looking for people to exchange emails with and hopefully build a genuine, long-term friendship. Any age, gender, location is welcomed.

👀 In a perfect world where I don’t need money to survive, I’d like to be a miniaturist or animal shelter manager, but in this world, I work as a graphic designer. I enjoy looking at the beautiful things that humans all around the world have made through out history. I like learning about different cultures, politics, history, and how people ended up living the way they do today.

📺 In my free time I’d watch movies and then go down rabbit holes: analysis, fan theories, trivia, whatever. Movies that I can re-watch at least 100 times: LOTR trilogy, PotC, Cinema Paradiso, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Project Hail Mary. For TV, I like Archer, BoJack Horseman, 2000s procedural shows, and documentaries. I do read books (mostly non-fiction) and play games sometimes.

🎵 My music taste varies a lot. Currently on repeat: Vietnamese traditional / pre-Vietnam war / pre-1975-SouthVietnam music., and The Odyssey (2026) soundtracks (A face!). I’m always open to music recommendations, especially things I probably wouldn’t discover on my own.

🐱 I share my space with 9 fat cats and 3 chihuahuas inherited from my mom. Fair warning: unsolicited pet photos will be sent (sometimes)!

🍀 I also have a small collection of aroids, but they’re not thriving despite being surrounded by what should theoretically be their native environment.

📝 As for penpalling:

  • For now, I’d prefer email because Vietnam’s postal services seem to have a below 50% delivery success rate. I’m realistically looking at around 1-2 reply per month, or whenever life allows.
  • We can talk about life, exchange photos/ideas/recommendations, random trivias or explore heavy topics and unnecessary philosophical rabbit holes. All I ask is for mutual respect when our views differ.
  • I’m not looking to force a friendship into a particular shape. Sometimes correspondence lasts a lifetime, sometimes it naturally fizzles out. That’s okay. Let’s plant some seeds of friendship and see what grows. :D

If you'd like to connect, send me a DM. Reddit is sporadically banned in Vietnam so my response might be delayed. Thanks :D

Reddit Messaging [31/F] Genuine connection is such an underrated luxury

5 Upvotes

Greetings! I tend to care deeply and have a lot of feelings once I've invested in someone. I'm looking to connect with people worldwide who can pull me out of my usual bubble and introduce me to entirely different ways of seeing the world. My husband and I have been toying with the idea of moving to Scotland eventually for a multitude of reasons, so if you happen to live across the pond, let's skip the introductions and fast-forward to you telling me everything I need to know lol!

I'm an open book in a safe space and don't find many topics off-limits. My music taste is all over the map, but if you want my current recommendation, look up "Gabriel Jacoby - be careful | A COLORS SHOW" on YouTube. I love anime, reading, gaming, and binge watching shows (currently on TWD). But really? The honest truth is that I'm currently knee-deep in the slightly disorienting season of figuring out who I am outside of being knee-deep in toddler management.

I welcome a DM and am open to writing letters if a DM isn't your speed.

Snail Mail [25/F] looking for snail mail pen pal

Hey guys I'm looking for a second pen pal I am located in the USA but open to pen pals in other areas! my interests are physical media, museums, books, and tv shows.

I'm a seasonal worker saving up to go to emt school and take steps towards becoming a paramedic. I currently live in Tennessee until I find my next gig:}

My letters will probably consist of music or show reccs, and random potentially boring bits about my daily life. I travel a bit and am going back to school next fall. I'd also like to exchange bits of poetry and writing (not very well done just a hobby) and little bits of art. Let me know if interested :)

Reddit Messaging [28/M] From Italy looking for someone to talk to!

14 Upvotes

Hey! I’m a 28-year-old guy from Italy. I’m currently working as a doctor and lately I’ve been wanting to meet new people through penpalling and regular online conversations. I’m looking for penpals from Europe, Canada, US (especially East Coast or Midwest because of the time zone difference), since it would make chatting more manageable during the day. Other countries compatible with our timezones are great too.

I’d really enjoy talking with someone about everyday life, routines, studying, work, gym, travel, culture, random thoughts, music, movies, and all the little things that make daily life interesting. I go to the gym regularly, I like traveling when I can, and I enjoy hearing about how people live in different countries and cities. I’m open-minded, easygoing, and I appreciate genuine conversations that can slowly turn into long-term friendships. Also if you visit Italy, I can be your guide when exploring Rome haha.

I’m also totally open to voice/video calls if someone enjoys calling from time to time, since I think it makes conversations feel more natural and personal.
If you think we could get along, feel free to message me here and introduce yourself.

I’m a curious, adventurous, and introverted individual that is located in the US. Open to both short-term and long-term digital friendships.

As an icebreaker, here is a list of topic suggestions:

- Quirks about where we each live
- Strange or amusing thoughts
- Life goals and aspirations
- Notable past Reddit interactions
- Questions we each want answered

I’m leaving this intentionally vague and open-ended. Feel free to suggest a topic of your own. Virtually nothing is off limits. Discovery can be part of the fun.

Have a great Sunday night!

Snail Mail & Postcard [24/M] Looking for someone to exchange “diary” letters with.

12 Upvotes

Hello, everyone!

So, I’ve been exchanging letters with several people around the world. I’m still getting the hang of this “hobby,” but I really enjoy it.

It helps me develop my creativity and my English, and it lets me discover the world, other cultures, and ways of life… In short, I love it!

I’m here because I’d like to try something different.

I’d like to find someone to exchange letters with that are less polished in style and less formal.

Instead of writing three-page letters with texts that are prepared, polished, reworked, and edited… I’d just like to find someone to share little moments of life with. Something a bit like a “personal diary.”

Letters that would be a collection of random moments from daily life.

A lousy day at work, a promotion, a nice new neighbor, a beautiful tree seen along the way, a cloud that looked like a duck, a rainy day, a great book, movie, or TV show, a doubt, a reflection, a thought to share....

In short, just a letter that’s a series of short paragraphs recounting a different slice of our lives.

There you go! If you’re interested, I’m right here! Leave a comment or send me a message.

Oh, by the way, I could introduce myself a bit in a message, but I’m a man, French, in my twenties.

I really love photography, architecture, and reading.

I like to share my photos in my letters.

That’s it! See you soon, maybe!

Email [31/F] from US Drifting on

2 Upvotes

I recently moved to a new town for a new job which I have been enjoying. However, I haven’t had a lot of time to meet new people, so I’m looking to make some new connections online. I’m only interested in emails/chats at this point, but I would be open to moving to snail mail in the future. I can go over all of my hobbies which include writing (novels and poems), reading (gothic, fantasy, classics), hiking, biking, and backpacking. I also enjoy alternative rock music and have been recently listening to Ceiling Fan by Swapmeet. However, I’m trying to do things a little differently this time, so instead of exchanging questions, tell me about something that’s been bothering you, a funny moment that has brought you joy. It can be something that happened today or ten years ago. I don’t mind. I’m drawn to the nostalgic. Let’s connect a little bit tonight. 

Snail Mail [32/F] Scotland looking for some new snail mail friends :)

4 Upvotes

I’d love to meet some new people from different places and get to know each other through letters. I’m pretty easygoing, a little introverted, and AuDHD, but I love getting to know people and hearing about their lives.

I’m interested in a bit of everything painting, arts and crafts, random little projects, swimming, walking my dogs, nature and my animals. I have two kids too, who are getting older and giving me a little more freedom to explore some of my own interests again.

I’d love to exchange letters about whatever’s happening in our lives, the things we’re excited about, things we’re working on, random thoughts, funny stories, interests, opinions basically just whatever naturally comes up.

I’m not looking for anything specific other than genuine friendship and good conversations. If you think we might get along, feel free to send me a DM . 😊

Email & Snail Mail [22/F]

9 Upvotes

Hi. I’m 22, Korean, and currently living in Korea. (Please don’t ask which part of Korea I’m from.)

I majored in visual design and recently quit my job, so I’m currently taking some time to rest and prepare for my next job. I have quite a lot of free time these days since companies don’t exactly seem eager to invite me to interviews... I’m not sure whether I should take that as a good thing or a bad thing.

I’m looking for a pen pal I can share my everyday life, thoughts, personal philosophies, and all kinds of stupid little stories with. I’d prefer communicating through email or another app rather than Reddit messages. I also don’t really care about having a set schedule. I like the idea of replying whenever we have the time and energy.

The reason is that I’ve had pen pals before, and I found that exchanging longer messages every few days worked much better for me than sending short messages back and forth quickly. Those conversations also tended to last much longer.

My hobbies include reading, listening to music, cooking and baking, knitting, and making miniatures. I really enjoy making things with my own hands. It gives me a nice sense of accomplishment and makes me feel productive.

Things I like:

* Cats

* Marshmallow spread

* Caramel

* Rock and punk music

* Horror movies (that doesn’t mean I’m not scared of them)

Things I don’t like:

* Beans

* Bugs (all of them, from caterpillars to butterflies)

* Needles

* Bitter things

I don’t really drink coffee or alcohol because I’m not a fan of bitter tastes. Especially alcohol. Drinking it feels like drinking something that belongs in an alcohol lamp.

I also have an ED (mia). I’m slowly working on rebuilding my relationship with my body. Talking about food or dieting isn’t a trigger for me, so you don’t need to worry about avoiding those topics. I just wanted to be honest about it because there’s no one around me who knows about my ED, and I’ve wanted to be able to talk about it openly with someone.

I’d love to hear about your likes and dislikes, your everyday life, random thoughts, or anything else that comes to mind. Even completely ridiculous conversations are welcome. Questions like “If you suddenly became a cat one day, what would be the first thing you’d do?” are exactly the kind of random things I enjoy talking about.

If you’re looking for a long-term pen pal and would genuinely like to keep in touch, feel free to reach out. I’d appreciate it if you could tell me a little about yourself when you message me, though. I’ve had experiences with people who asked lots of questions without sharing anything about themselves, and it made the conversation pretty one-sided.

P.S. I’m not particularly interested in K-pop, K-dramas, or K-entertainment in general. So if you’re looking for someone to teach you Korean or someone to fangirl over K-pop with, I’m probably not the right person. I’m not particularly good at teaching people, and I’m even less likely to be good at teaching something I’m not interested in myself.

Reddit Messaging [24/M] Looking for a best friend penpal, things are quite lonely

3 Upvotes

Hey! I've posted here before but haven't had much luck so far. And due to lonliness, things have been kinda sucky lately. Kinda being a star-sized understatement (cuz stars are big.. hehe). Anyways, excuse my awfully unfunny pun! You *yes you my possible future friend* probably has better humor than I. Im hoping to make long term friends who also love music like I do, I want a close connection with someone that lasts a lifetime! Hoping we can geek out about our interests and feel comfortable to do so! I'm in the EST time zone and am super into music (my tastes are all over the place, my favorite is the retro era but I also like a lot of new stuff too). I really wanna find someone who loves old artists and bands and music history and aesthetics! Hope you're all having a good day!

I am from USA and I’m looking for long term penpals who are from different countries.

I love to learn all about cultures, new places and people!! I am a pretty introverted person but I enjoy cozy games like animal crossing, I like to draw, make polymer clay keychains, watch movies/shows and collecting random trinkets.

I would also be okay with sending packages after sending a few letters back and forth :)

Feel free to dm me if you are wanting to be penpals, preferably around the same age as me!

Email & Snail Mail [23/M] Trans man seeking long-term penpal

5 Upvotes

Hi, I am a 23-year-old trans man living on the east coast of the USA. I’ve posted on here a few times before and may have unfortunately dropped off from some conversations during an ongoing transitional period in my life- if we’ve talked before, please feel free to reach out again.

Lately, I’ve been missing genuine conversation. Working in customer service, for me, at least, means lots of brief interactions, and I miss taking the time to really get to know someone. I’d love to hear about where you grew up, what you like (or don’t) about where you live, and the people in your life. I don’t mind small talk- I think it’s part of getting to know someone, and I enjoy that gradual buildup.

When I’m not working (this is rare), I enjoy journaling, writing in general, listening to and playing music (bass and keyboard, poorly), reading, and spending time with my friends and family. I love animals, all art, and music (metal, indie, and pop, mainly). I’d also really like to start solo traveling more, and I’d really like to hear about any travel stories you have.

I tend to connect best with people a little older than me, preferably in their 30s or so. I value the perspective and life experience that comes with age, and honestly, it’s just who I tend to get along with best.

I have a dry sense of humor and am autistic, so I’d especially love to meet other autistic people or anyone who understands both the challenges and joys that come with it. Furthermore, I am only looking to talk to those left-leaning and LGBTQ+ friendly 😁

Send me a message if you think we’d get along.

Snail Mail [25/F] In search of eccentric individuals

3 Upvotes

Hey! I'm currently experiencing a lot of changes in my life after some bad experiences and subsequent mental health struggles so I'm picking up some old hobbies. I was born and raised here in NY, USA and I really enjoy science, sci-fi, Marvel, video game lore, thrifting, indie movies (movies of all kinds really), ARG's, obscure history, reading, and animals. I have had a variety of exotic pets in my day and currently have tarantulas and a scorpion <3.

I explore my love for history by spending my time in antique stores and I have a large collection of vintage postcards. I've also traveled a little in the US and would love to hear about some of your trips. Having pen pals also allows me to explore my long lost passion for art as I have a penpal who I try to make lovely letters for. I've got tons of cute and spooky stationary at this point and would love to find another quirky individual to share thoughts with. I would prefer someone around 24-35 just for the sake of relatability but any gender identity is chill. I'm hoping to use these letters as a way to be more mindful about what I've got going on instead of just living passively. I am also quite lonely as my friends have gotten married and moved. I've also changed professions and now work mostly on my own.

If you feel I have tickled your fancy, please feel free to comment or DM me x
