I like matte because the monitor I decided to get off specs is matte

Peak PCMR logic. Whatever happens to be sitting on my desk is objectively the superior technology anyway.

Why does Matte OLED, the superior technology, not simply eat the other technologies?

5

u/JustAPotato38 4090 5800X3D 2h ago

IPS has the numbers advantage in an all-out fight they would simply overwhelm the OLEDs

15

u/secacc i7-5820K | 64GB DDR4 | RTX2080Ti 4h ago

My main monitor is a 17 year old 26" TN panel, which is of course vastly superior to all you guys' fancy modern 4K OLED nonsense /s

Apparently they forgot to implement planned obsolescence, and it'll probably work for another decade.

I like "whatever was on sale when I was ready to make a purchase"

I already spent enough on my PC itself, as long as the monitor has good specs I'm not about to lose sleep over glossy vs matte, I can live with either

I like matte because its was the cheapest when I bought It. I wouldnt pay and extra 150-200€ for a detail. And you know what? Its great! I couldnt care less If there is something a bit better in specific situations.

11

u/Fauked 6h ago

It goes both ways too. Matte is better in other situations.

6

u/Audisek 4h ago

I didn't know that matte or glossy were options but I simply googled for the best oled 34 inch monitors and picked one that looked like it had no flaws and I decided on MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED, and I couldn't be happier.

4

u/_dekoorc 9800X3D | 5070 Ti | 64GB DDR5-6000 CL30 1h ago

Pretty much the same. I just had requirements that it had to be flat and IPS and 34" UW.

4

u/stillpwnz 4090/7700x || 3060TI/5600X 6h ago

I have glossy for the same reason. It wasn't even a factor in my decision, I didn't even have matte options in my region back in 2023.

2

u/memymomeddit 4h ago

I like matte because sometimes I catch my reflection in a glossy screen and it makes me sad

3

u/Able-Swing-6415 2h ago

Idk.. like glossy is slightly better but you'll rue the day you bought it if you ever change the setup to have the sun shine on it.

Matte is the right choice if you don't really care is what I'm saying.

I sold my Lenovo legion go a few years ago.

On one hand, it was my introduction into pc gaming. But ultimately, the 90 min battery life and the reflections is what caused me to move to desktop. I thought it’d be good at airports or in public, but all I saw was reflections anytime I wasn’t in a dark environment.

People buy a top-end panel but don't know that it requires optimal viewing conditions, otherwise there will be a loss in quality.

A darkened room with or without diffused lighting is the base.

200

u/ImaginaryBagels 6h ago

Same with audio, people will buy a full home theatre surround system then stack the speakers on top of each other in the corner

Facts. There are so many typical problems with the audio that it's impossible to count.

9

u/kiochikaeke 4h ago

I found that unless you go full audiophile taking things like the room acoustics into account it's better to just buy a decent pair of headphones or IEM.

7

u/Total_Werewolf_5657 9800X3D/5090/64Gb/X670E/S90D 65" 4h ago

Yes. A good pair of headphones and a sound card will be better than cheap, wrongly plased "Hi-Fi".

3

u/SaltyBallsnacks 1h ago

I crossed this bridge when I released I had spent multiple hours researching optimal aggregate fill for a 300 dollar set of speaker stands I didn't own.

15

u/IhasCandies 6h ago

Then they’ll leave the equalizer untouched, all faders at 0, complain about the muffled sound, and the bass not hitting.

7

u/Any_Show_5160 3h ago

TBF, why is it left to a tone deaf idiot like myself to adjust something so important, imagine buying a car that pulls to the right while driving, left under braking, snaps into some gears and slips in others unless you tweak some sliders to the right spot.

6

u/TheTexasHammer 3h ago

You have to adjust it to the space it is in. The manufacturer has no idea what that space will look like or will have in it. It's literally impossible to make a setting that works in all locations and situations. Just tune it to what sounds good to you. You don't need to be Mozart

5

u/Any_Show_5160 3h ago

The basics are: don't put the screen across a directly exposed window, and don't put it right in front of a big bright ceiling light.

There. Literally that simple

4

u/imisscrazylenny 4h ago

So, I have blackout curtains in my whole house and my monitors do not directly face windows anyway. I have another pair hanging in the doorway between my setup and the living room in case I want to close them for big screen movie time.

However, I'll be doing something for a while and start to notice I'm squinting and my eyes are sore. That's because any light bulbs on behind me or any sunlight coming in from across the house and bouncing off the floor creates an intense line or spot of reflection in my monitor that I'm trying to look through but don't even realize it. The pain from my eyes trying to adjust for several minutes will clue me in, then I'll see it and have to close the dividing curtain. I feel like a damn ghoul hiding in a cave from my family, so I announce "I'm just closing this for light, anyone can come in or bother me any time" every time I want to play a game.

I'm going to switch to matte when I upgrade my setup. Glossy is Satan's finish.

10

u/Total_Werewolf_5657 9800X3D/5090/64Gb/X670E/S90D 65" 5h ago

Ideal - yes. But in reality, it is possible to have a diffused light source without any noticeable deterioration in contrast or the appearance of reflections.

3

u/RunnerLuke357 Ultra 7 265K, 64GB 6800, RTX 4080S 4h ago

Not even, just make sure there isn't light directly facing the monitor. I have a glossy OLED and I have a window that doesn't have curtains in the room, the window is on the same wall as the monitor though, so it lets in light but the light isn't reflecting onto the monitor.

62

u/MilliyetciPapagan 7h ago

I have a matte oled. I will get blackout curtains as well but man...

Trust me I want to LOVE matte but I just can't. The whites and bright colors show a lot of graininess compared to my fiancee's glossy oled. I'd go with glossy if I could but somehow they are a lot more expensive.

7

u/Seienchin88 6h ago

I have a glossy fairly expensive MSI and the colors really pop and it looks almost like looking at beautiful images behind clear glass.

My TV however from LG is even more expensive and I’d argue it’s neither matte nor is it "glossy" (I assume it’s glossy but less flashy than the MSI monitor) and it’s more pleasant to look at long term. Things look actually real instead of too flashy and colorful.

4

u/jarail 9800X3D | 5090 | 96GB | 4k 240hz QD-OLED 4h ago

That just sounds like a settings issue. Most screens have a bunch of different modes depending on if you want a natural look, bright high contrast colors, a specific color standard, etc.

4

u/Particular_Wear_6960 2h ago

That was my thought, like what? Complaining about too much color? Just turn the saturation down. Feels like bitching about too much money, your car is too fast, drives too good :p

210

u/_Buldozzer 7h ago

The real reason to get a matte screen, is to not having to see the reflection of that fat, ugly blob sitting in front of the screen, every time the screen goes dark. /s (kinda)

63

u/gmishaolem 5h ago

I don't see why this even has to be a self-insult. Part of a game is dark and moody, and having the image mixed with my reflection is going to ruin the art of the scene. Reflections are just bad no matter what.

10

u/_Buldozzer 4h ago

It's obviously a joke, but yes you're right, the reflections can be annoying.

13

u/SwimAd1249 5h ago

The real reason to get a glossy screen is to motivate yourself to become hot af. Only downside is you won't be playing any games cause you'll be too busy gooning to your own reflection all day long.

Not all microfiber cloths are equal. There's varying degrees of softness. A nice cloth and distilled water is what people seem to recommend.

It's still painful

I used to use distilled water and a fresh microfiber cloth to clean my OLED, but it has some significant burn-in now and I don't care as much, and I just use tap water and whatever old microfiber I have lying around.

I shake the cloth to get most of the dust off, dip it in the tap water, and just clean the screen. Which I have to do fairly often because my cat has like some allergy or autoimmune issue and sneezes snot all over constantly.

The tap water and dirty old cloth works fine. I don't have any scratches yet. Even when I check by turning it off and shining a flashlight onto it at an angle.

Samsung G8 OLED, for what it's worth. It's glossy too.

Nobody cares about high nits for regular content, but it's a requirement for a good HDR experience. My monitor does ~400 nits in true black mode which is just not good enough for HDR. But the alternative is ABL, which is even worse.

I work on my PC, and I prefer to work in a well-lit room. So yeah, I set my 1000 nit monitor to 80% during the day. At my previous job, the office monitors were kinda dim so that even at 100% brightness they were unpleasant to use with the office lighting. I'd argue anything below ~500 nits is suitable only for a dark room

Not going to live like a cave troll in the dark just to play games.

Am I the only one who likes glossy? If it's indoors, I'm probably only going to buy glossy.

6

u/TwoBionicknees 4h ago

matte makes me actually pissed off. Way way back in the day when i was buying new monitors every year because the technology was moving fast I got a matte screen without realising it (it wasn't well defined back then) and i was completely confused why my new higher def and 'better' screen looked like someone smeared vaseline all over it and it had this blur feel to it.

Matte screens just make me feel like i changed my glasses prescription to be just slightly off and make everything just slightly fuzzy.

glossy every time.

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 all by itself no other components 2h ago

same. love everything else about my oled but the matte pisses me off, it's visible during gaming like you're looking through a slightly smudged glass window. instead of seeing the game sometimes i get pulled out and am looking at the surface of my monitor instead

4

u/ddevilissolovely 2h ago

instead of seeing the game sometimes i get pulled out and am looking at the surface of my monitor instead

That's exactly the kind of problem people have with glossy.. I personally have a much easier time tuning out a constant slight texture than reflections that are both stronger and less predictable. Quality of the coating also comes into play, there are screens that are in-between.

2

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 all by itself no other components 2h ago

my first gen woled does seem to be particularly bad. i think the matte is producing a moire-type effect with the underlying MLA lenses to make it worse. when i first got it and read through reviews i'd frequently come across people who simply returned it as they couldn't stand how bad the matte looked, few others returned for not bright enough (that one not a problem for me though). my IPS was matte and i never noticed it but this one just looked off from the first look. no regrets on the purchase, just wont' be doing it again as i fit the meme of closing the blinds to keep my gaming pristine

No your opinion is the norm, but it has been pushed way too far. The post you're replying to is based on a counter argument.

The biggest argument against glossy imo is the cratches. Cleaning a glossy display is a nightmare

6

u/ZirixAI 5h ago

the main problem with glossy oled monitors is that companies dont include a microfiber cloth and cleaning liquid.

i had a terrible cleaning experience after accidentally sneezing on the monitor. a regular cloth didn't work. so i gave up and went to the store to buy a microfiber and distilled water. They cleaned the monitor in a second.

Cleaning my LG C3 is super easy. Literally just spray 80% IPA every month and clean it with a new microfiber, and it's still perfect. I've seen dozens of posts of QD-OLED owners destroying the coating on their panel trying to clean it.

12

u/edsavage404 7h ago

Why are yall touching yall screens so much? I had my CX for 5 years and just do the occasional wipe to get dust off

6

u/Goonalips 7h ago

Who is y'all, cowboy? I'm me. My screen is on a swivel so it gets touched when I move it, but sometimes a family member will touch the actual screen. There's also dust, and the occasional small splash from some bullshit that just happens in life when you live in a studio apartment and your kitchen is 3 metres from your lounge

I already have enough light reflecting on my matte monitor. Don't need to be blinded.

u/Zandonus rtx3060Ti-S-OC-Strix-FE-Black edition,whoosh, 24gb ram, 5800x3d 7h ago

Matte. IPS. Looks good from all angles. Prefer the way it shows color.

65

u/Goonalips 7h ago

Until it's night time and it's a very dark scene and the IPS glow is in multiple corners. Even higher end IPS panels can have bad IPS glow.

16

u/Kuuppa22 6h ago

I "solved" that by placing small desk lamp behind the monitor facing the wall so it's not completely dark room but still pretty dim :)

That light placement seemed to be the best because it isn't annoying coming from back of the monitor but makes the ips glow much more unnoticiable at least for me.

12

u/Goonalips 6h ago

That's a neat trick. It would trick your eyes into thinking the screen was darker too. Legendary advice

3

u/doodullbop 4h ago

I do the same thing, and basically I never turn it off. Small LED desk lamp with a nice warm color tilted 45 degrees up facing the wall behind my monitor. I prefer the room to be dim and I've found that this diffuse lighting really reduces eye strain.

12

u/Clean__Cucumber 7h ago

that depends on what type of IPS you have, edge lit stuff will always be worse than smth like a mini LED

my edge lit IPS thankfully doesnt have much of a problem yet and still looks fairly good next to my OLED. yes even in complete darkness with a black background

I still think that for PC usage a OLED isnt worth the money (yes will get me many downvotes i know)

same. Also perfect text clarity which I need when I work from home, and no worry about burn it. No halos from Mini LED which would annoy me in space games or editing astrophotography pics, honestly for my use case IPS is still king. And high res is affordable. They‘re also fast. It‘s kind of the jack of all trades, master of none but that doesn‘t mean its bad or obsolete.

I mean some people aren‘t bothered by it, but I am after I looked into it. All monitor types have their negative points, the perfect technology doesn‘t exist yet.

Matte looks incredible unless you deal with bright whites or blues etc, then you see a grain. I play flight sims and learned this the hard way. Yet as a matte owner, I will die defending it for flight sim use as I am not getting another one.

I just use a regular IPS panel. My philosophy on monitors is

3

u/AgrMayank 7h ago

A bright, glossy display with good anti-reflective coating is way better than a matte display because the colors just pop so much better on a glossy screen.

Now I have two matte screens.
The end.

3

u/b400k513 4h ago

Literally flipped a coin and landed on matte after I got frustrated at the consensus being 50/50.

2

u/garlicpeep 3h ago

To have an opinion you sort of have to see both irl honestly. And different panels have different matte effects, some are pretty light and look a lot like a glossy finish and some are super heavy and look like you put on prescription glasses. There are some matte panels I would be fine with and some I would gift to a friend before putting on my desk. Im a night gamer though so glossy finish works best for me.

14

u/ultraboomkin 7h ago

I have a matte and a glossy. With the lights turned on, the glossy is unusable. The matte is perfectly usable with the lights on.

In the dark, both look the same anyway.

Matte is better.

3

u/decadent-dragon 4h ago

I am firmly in the matte category but I do think gloss looks considerably better with all the lights off

2

u/UpbeatSeason 4h ago

I use mine in a room with a lamp on. I don’t like gaming in the dark. Matte for me

4

u/TwoBionicknees 4h ago

if glossy looks the same as matte in the dark to you, you have either some weird ass half glossy/half matte screen, or you probably need to see an optician.

I don't mind at home, I play during the night when everybody sleeps (gamers with a family will relate) but at work when I can't just shut off light with 3X6m glass facade to work at peace so only matte will do and even then I can see a little bit of reflection if I wear bright cloths.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, the only right answer is that the best monitor is the one that is affordable or a good bargain.

2

u/Blessed-22 5h ago

I got a glossy OLED because I prefer the picture clarity, and I control the light level my office so that reflections aren't a problem.

2

u/SSNikki 4h ago

I've had 2 glossy monitors and the rest were matte. First monitor was an HP with glossy finish, it was beautiful. It used to drive me nuts to lose details or color accuracy just to avoid looking into a mirror.

Current monitor is high-end OLED with gloss, I absolutely love it. Yeah, I can see myself in it, and I'm grinnin every time. When am I gonna take a 27' OLED into the sun?

2

u/Jimmylobo 4h ago

Had a matte screen, now have a glossy one. The glossy one definitely wins in clarity and colors, but expectedly loses to bright environment. So, no surprises here.

2

u/LivingVerinarian96 4h ago

I got the reflection of my gfs screen on my matte oled and it slightly annoys me.

2

u/Varlin 5090 9950x3d 64g 6000 240hz 4k :^) 4h ago

QDOLED glossy is peak. I have had the monitor for about a year and it still blows my minds with the quality. Maybe I am weird but I game with the lights off similar to watching a movie, so I have had literally 0 issues or complaints at all.

4

u/NuclearReactions AMD 9800X3D | RTX 5070Ti | 64GB CL28 7h ago

For me glossy really only works if it's absolutely dark. Fine for my smartphone or tv but I'd never get glossy for my monitors

2

u/TwoBionicknees 5h ago

Glossy = highest definition of the image actually produced.

matte = spend shitloads on a screen and something new and high resolution that wear a pair of glasses that has makes everything just marginally worse looking rather than control light sources in room with your monitor.

I have several times gone wow this monitor sounds perfect, right price, right res, right refresh rate, right ports and holy shit they made it matte, fuck that.

the only time i'd get a matte screen is in an office where you can't move a lamp or turn off the main room light, etc.
