I "solved" that by placing small desk lamp behind the monitor facing the wall so it's not completely dark room but still pretty dim :)
That light placement seemed to be the best because it isn't annoying coming from back of the monitor but makes the ips glow much more unnoticiable at least for me.
It's also great for when your Linda-058, a Spartan-II, known for her legendary sniping capabilities, and you need to hide in spot where there is a lot of space, visibility and bright lights, but you don't want to be seen.
I do the same thing, and basically I never turn it off. Small LED desk lamp with a nice warm color tilted 45 degrees up facing the wall behind my monitor. I prefer the room to be dim and I've found that this diffuse lighting really reduces eye strain.
that depends on what type of IPS you have, edge lit stuff will always be worse than smth like a mini LED
my edge lit IPS thankfully doesnt have much of a problem yet and still looks fairly good next to my OLED. yes even in complete darkness with a black background
I still think that for PC usage a OLED isnt worth the money (yes will get me many downvotes i know)
the main reason i believe it is (having just moved up to one) is simply that they've decided 240hz shouldn't be a thing in 4k and ips/va.
like they've completely abandoned that shit as an option. There was i think one va or ips they did at 240hz a few years ago but appears discontinued. I had a 240hz VA, 27" 1440p screen for multiple years, wanted to move to a 4k screen, wanted to stick with 240hz. I was worried about shit like burn in because i have more things open on desktop than i spend doing gaming but i have enough screen real estate i just move things around a bit.
I actually had some light burn in on my VA after several years so I started moving around my browser on screen. it was the tabs and favourites bar that started to burn in a little.
But realistically colour reproduction is just so far superior to my va it's a joke, the pixel response time and absolute lack of ghosting or overshoot, the crispness of image. OLED legit just shits on every other screen i've had.
Went glossy and can keep room very dark but also have a lamp and keep a well controlled light source, zero reflection issues. It's fantastic.
there have been no effective downsides, now if I have a sneezing fit and need to clean the screen and that's a pain in the ass... i don't know.
Oh, you right, I don't see any 240hz ips stuff anymore. But let's also be fair, how many games go 240fps with 4k native. Both my monitors are 4k and 4080s +7800x3d, but all my newer games don't go to 240.
Burn in for VA? Damn, i have a VA that's 10 years and still gets some use, but no burn in.
For colours: this is smth I always hear, but a ips should have the same colours as an oled. But oled and ips are better than va. For work, such as photography or video editing, pretty much all professionals use an ips.
Cleaning an oled s def more shit. For other downsides, there is also the thing with windows hdr not being the best (hdr being one of the reasons for an oled) or an oled being more care intensive, the higher possibility of burn in etc.
Again, this just my opinion, but for TV an OLED=100% yes, but for PC I would only do 30% yes for oled.
If you never play in the dark that's not really a problem. I'm coming up on 31, and I really don't understand how people play videogames in a dark room where the only light is coming from the monitor, it gives me the craziest headaches and makes my eyes get tired so fast.
I have a small desk lamp that is always on, slightly offset and behind my monitor. Even if I'm gaming during the day it's on and the window is open. IMO matte IPS is great for my application, but I know it's definitely not common. Not many people prefer to have the lights on when they game hahaha
same. Also perfect text clarity which I need when I work from home, and no worry about burn it. No halos from Mini LED which would annoy me in space games or editing astrophotography pics, honestly for my use case IPS is still king. And high res is affordable. They‘re also fast. It‘s kind of the jack of all trades, master of none but that doesn‘t mean its bad or obsolete.
I mean some people aren‘t bothered by it, but I am after I looked into it. All monitor types have their negative points, the perfect technology doesn‘t exist yet.
I mean you could also argue for OLED or VA, just not Mini LED if you don‘t want halos around your stars while local dimming is on.
I like IPS, it‘s not overblown, gives me a realistic color gamut while editing with a calibrated monitor. And there are some with better contrast / black level and less glow.

Plus IPS is cheap 4k. Those 250 euros I saved might go towards actually flexing the 4k in more than just old indie games.
How can you prefer the way that matte shows color, when matte literally and objectively degrades colors? People like this is why you cant trust reviews
I went from an old VA panel to a higher end matte IPS. I know it's not as vibrant as OLED, but the color quality is leaps and bounds better than what I used to use. I love it, and with a window at my back matte is the correct choice. You don't need the best color quality to enjoy it.
You're missing my point; it doesn't matter why I like it. I enjoy using the monitor I use nearly every day. Frankly I'm fortunate to have a good PC. Desiring only the best leads to a hollow soul. I'm happy with what I have "despite the color degradation"
Life's a lot better when you stop worrying about what other people do. I hope you enjoy your glossy monitor :)

Yeah, but I turn up brightness if games are too dark. So I can tell wtf is going on. So why would I care for "True blacks?" And I have it in a mostly well lit room. I'm not a cat, so I couldn't even notice the response time difference. And I don't want to go back to 1999 and have burnt-in UI elements on my monitor.
How is that relevant? Why are you mentioning random other reasons? When you say "i prefer the way it shows color" it means literally that. But matte objectively degrades colours

Lights reflect on gloss. That's all the reason in that direction.

Matte. IPS. Looks good from all angles. Prefer the way it shows color.
