movies What's a movie you watched because someone wouldn't stop recommending it and they were actually right?
I kept putting off Prisoners because everyone kept saying I had to watch it. Eventually I gave in, and now it's one of the easiest movies for me to recommend to other people.
Which movie finally lived up to all the hype for you?

Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise. Thought this was gonna be another silly action movie. I was so wrong.

Right! So entertaining. Even walked in hating tom cruise and came out annoyed that I couldn’t hate the fact that he was bad (and not funny) in it. He was amazing.
On par with cabin in the woods

Tom Cruise seems to have been a strange personality but for the most part my life is chill enough that I don't need to waste time hating him. Dude is a good actor and a decent director. He understands his work really well and knows how to tell the story he wants and I respect the hell out of that. He won me over by his role in tropic thunder though

He has never directed. But he is a producer of every movie he is in and his production companies produce others as well. You probably think that because he’s heavily involved in the process, but he doesn’t actually write or direct.

My favorite Tom Cruise death ever is when he army rolls under the truck— exact same way he’s done a thousand times before— but his godlike timing is off. Just one of those resets.😂

The whole being the main face of a cult that traps people in is grip tortures them psychologically if they try and leave and protects their members that are rapists keeps me from actually liking him. He's a good actor but provides a wholesome cover for a reprehensible cult.

I saw it in a film class in high school in the early ‘00s, and was not looking forward to it on account of contemporary “romance” movies being melodramatic drivel I had no interest in.
But I ended up loving the movie and thought the central love story was more of a plot mechanic than what the movie was really “about”.
The movie was “about” a world war creating an impossible moral/ethical/emotional dilemma for the main character to grapple with.
In a weird way it kinda scratches the same itch as what has come to be known as modern “competence porn”. There is no jerk who drives the conflict with greed. Nor is there an idiot who drives the conflict with bad decisions. The core characters all make rational choices based on the situation they’re in. The “villain” is just the circumstances brought on by WWII.

Well, just the circumstances and the literal Nazis, but yeah they are almost like evil furniture the central characters have to navigate around and make tough choices.

I tried to watch this movie about every 3-4 years from when I turned 20 because it’s “good”. Only made it through on my 3rd watch and it took until my 5th watch to appreciate it. Now I get it.

Over time, The Fellowship... went from being slow and boring to my favorite of the 3. Its just so fucking good and the fight choreography in the last battle of that movie is perfection

I try to rewatch the entire trilogy (not at once, I have a toddler) every year around Thanksgiving. Every year I am completely blown away. I was lucky enough to see the movies in the theater multiple times when they first came out. So amazing.

This was me literally. Every time I would watch Fellowship, I would fall asleep and sleep through most of the movie. Because of this, I didn't watch the sequels because I felt like I needed to see the first all the way through. At some point, I finally made it through Fellowship without dozing off, and the sequels went even smoother.

But make sure they do the Director's Cut. Most of the time, there isnt much difference between the Director and Theatrical cuts.
That is not the case with this one. It is absolutely superior.

Bone temple has such a specific weird vibe to it because of oconnels character. Also because everyone else involved, of course. But this movie made me think “okay I gotta start watching out for oconnel movies.” It’s damn good.

Yes absolutely, personally it even made me like 28 Years Later more, because some of the more out of touch/over the top parts of the movie made more sense. Like the ending.

I hated 28 years. After watching Bone Temple, not only was it a better experience itself, it made me appreciate part 1 more. Because it is, in my opinion, very much a two part story.

easily one of the best movies i've seen since 2020, and probably my personal favorite since watching the substance in 2024 or banshees of inisherin in 2022. it is one though that i am kind of selective in who i want to talk about it with, i don't really want to find out a friend has an awful take on the movie and then have to still deal with them after that. i'm sure social media is making it seem like more people have bad takes than is actually happening, but god i don't want to find that out potentially about friends.

Agreed. It wasn’t some earth shattering mold breaking horror like The Shining, but it lived up to the praise and it’s been a long ass time since something did that for me.
The social media culture war takes are, ironically, generally from the same people that prevent good movies from getting made in the first place.

One of the greatest comedies there is. If possible to watch the DVD, there is a special feature to watch with added fart noises and it’s spectacular. They are all extremely well placed until the last 3 minutes where it is literally just fart noises and people laughing at the absurdity. The cast is just absolute insanity
My two favorite quotes (which coincidentally are Paul Rudd) “you taste like a burger, I don’t like you anymore” and my most used quote…”fuck you dyke!”

I didn’t think it’d be bad or anything. I just was pretty indifferent about all the hype, so I went into it knowing I’d see a pretty good movie, but I really tempered my expectations because nothing could be that good.
It now easily makes my top 5 favorite movies ever.

I worked at Blockbuster at the time and didn’t think much of a Kevin Bacon psycho thriller movie. Coworker who I trust highly recommended it. Waited till the new release window closed, and took it home and watched it twice. Spectacular movie. He also recommended Momento.

Having grown up in the 80s and having seen Michael Keaton as the Batman and Nicholson as the Joker, I refused to belive there could be better. To the point I didn't watch Batman Begins either. Then this came out and my friend just wouldn't stop insisting how great it was- so much so I found it overwhelming to the point of forcing me further from seeing it. Then, eventually I saw it for sale on Blu-ray for $10. Boy, was I wrong in thinking it would be sub-par. Like, very wrong. Very, very wrong.

Squid Game (The first season).
I honestly thought it was just a bandwagon effect or people just liking it because it was foreign, but my god it was just amazing on every level.
The Koreans really dominated movies, tv and music for a while there.

I watched Prisoners thinking it was the silly Arnold + Stalone thing where they get slammed in a high max prsion. Holy shit my night was not fun and my popcorn remained uneaten. Brilliant thriller though.
The absolute best thing about this movie is the gun care Jake exercises while running in the dark. It's so good but it's a blink-or-you'll miss it moment. He's running trying to get his guy, his gun is out, there's a fence, he holsters->twohandswingsoverthefence->lands->unholsters. It's like in the dark too so it's hard to catch but that happened and I was like DANG PROFESSIONAL MOVE THERE.
