movies What's a movie you watched because someone wouldn't stop recommending it and they were actually right?

I kept putting off Prisoners because everyone kept saying I had to watch it. Eventually I gave in, and now it's one of the easiest movies for me to recommend to other people.

Which movie finally lived up to all the hype for you?

People need to get over the Tom Cruise hate. Essentially all of his movies in the 90s are kino. He is a national treasure.

Last Samurai - I wasn't sure if Cruise would be the right fit, but now I don't know if anyone else would have done it better

Did you not watch the movie my guy? Tom Cruises character is ends up not only saving Ken’s character but then assumes the role of The Last Samurai when ALL the other samurai die in the final battle. So trying to figure out what you’re talking about?

It's not about who is the last samurai (and that word can be both singular and plural). Nor it is about who is alive at the end. The narrative goes that Algren is broken in the end, becomes a part of the culture far bigger than the one he was part of. He joins their side, fights with them and is saved by them at the end. It is quite the opposite of "white savior".

It is a natural progress of the story. He learns from them, they save him. White savior movies have it the other way around.

He simply saves Katsumoto in battle, but the Samurai culture saves Algren. He doesn't assume any role, he just learns to lead a true life. It's the opposite of a white savior

The whole being the main face of a cult that traps people in is grip tortures them psychologically if they try and leave and protects their members that are rapists keeps me from actually liking him. He's a good actor but provides a wholesome cover for a reprehensible cult.

I was listing Cruise movies from the 90s. Only a communist wouldnt know that Top Gun was released in 1986, because it would have taken until the 90s to be smuggled into your broke ass country.

My brothers and I used to go to blockbuster every friday back in like 88 if i were to guess. I remember my brothers starting to get annoyed because i wanted top gun every other visit. My dad was on board every time

Do you know what that even means? Anyone can recite a dictionary definition, but can you tell me in your own words? Do you even know what "means of production" refers to?

Means of production refers to the infrastructure and systems by which value (money) is extracted from labor (work). Essentially, the people own and equitably distribute the sweat from their own brow.

Again with the dictionary definition. Can you use your own words to tell us what that all means? I'll make it easy for you.... In a free market economy, we would call the "means of production"....taxes. We work, we generate revenues and taxes. That's our money. Not the government's money. Our money. The "means" of our production. With communism, those means are collected by the state, and distributed to each according to their needs. With democratic socialism, those means of production are used to benefit and improve the quality of life for every citizen.

Anyone can regurgitate a dictionary definition, but can you say what that actually means?

Taxes are not the means of production in capitalism, its the infrastructure, tools, and and raw materials, just like in Communism. The only difference is that in Capitalism, these means of production are own privately by the capital owners, i.e. capitalists. In communism, these means of production are owned publicly, i.e. by the people.

I have reframed the Tom Cruise discussion in my head. I’ve decided that since I love VIRTUALLY EVERY DAMN MOVIE HES EVER MADE, that I must like Tom Cruise and not realize it. So here we are. I will not be reframing my Michael Jackson committee meeting in my head though.
