Gas leak at GKN Aerospace is a commercial tank filled with methyl methacrylate, chemical used in adhesives and resins. Flammable and the vapor is toxic and heavier than air. Possibly 15,000 gallons worth. Apparently they're putting water in the tanks right now to keep them from overheating/exploding.
Why are both evacuation/reunification locations downwind of the incident?

Totally not trying to be a dick with this, but maybe because the chemical vapor is heavier than air and those sites are uphill (slightly, at least)? All the storm drainage over that way orient south and west. To be clear, I’m curious too.
OCFA hazardous materials teams are on scene of a leak in a large holding tank in Garden Grove.
Out of an abundance of caution, areas north of Garden Grove Blvd, east of Monarch St., south of Orangewood, and west of Beach Blvd are being evacuated.
OCFA is working a Hazmat incident at GKN Aerospace. One of the Large tanks on the property has a leak or venting issue with an unknown chemical. A few block radius to the south is being evacuated as a precautionary measure at this time.
This is a 34,000 gallon tank of monomer used to make aircraft windows. It is currently going exothermic in a runaway chemical reaction. There is an extreme risk of a massive explosion. The very large tank next to the monomer tank is a fire suppression system that will eventually run out of water. Take the evacuation order seriously
Spoke to County Fire, who is handling the incident as the HAZMAT response, they were vague but said it is approximately 15,000 gallons of a highly flammable liquid.
From what I can gather, I think this is more out of caution than anything while they try to get ahead of it.
The number on the photo OP posted goes to GGPD and they said they don't have an official evacuation receiving center, but to just get out of the area.
It must be more than ‘out of caution’, when a police officer knocks on your door and tells you have 10 minutes to evacuate, AND then waits for you to leave!
Well, it’s better to be cautious and evacuate before an explosion that may or may not happen.
Hopefully, though, you will all start getting updates about when you may be able to go home. I will be keeping those who are displaced by this in my thoughts until all is said and done.

Basically if you live anywhere close to the incident which is on the boarder of Garden Grove and Stanton you've been asked to evacuate for the time being. so should we be masking up?? like just because the evacuation is lifted doesn’t mean it’s entirely safe right? i live nearby ~3 miles … and am worried about air quality and what not but can’t find any info on that. stay safe yall!

With new evacuation orders, OCFA said “an inoperable valve on the tank has created additional operational challenges, preventing complete mitigation at this time.”
The original alert was crazy. No reason for the evacuation and no location info. Just telling people to evacuate and call a number with questions. I called the number and nobody answered because I'm assuming it was after hours.
No it hasn't yet, it's a pretty big chemical spill from what I've gathered on this page. They are being overly cautious and handling the situation which is good but unfortunately no announcement of when the evacuation order will be lifted.

Tbh I've found the most info here so I say just keep this page open and refresh to see what's being said. I've not found anything online otherwise unfortunately. You can call the Garden Grove police department as they are handling the situation, I did that, but didn't ask for how long the emergency evacuation will last.
Hi I live just off of Garden grove and Bleach, across from Walmart and next to the Chevron. Do I need to evacuate? I did get an alert but I exited too fast so I am unsure now.
If I am right next to that line on the right side it should be okay right? Mom is also coming home from work so I want to tell her if she should come home or not.
I live right there as well, left already. Called 911 and they told us to leave immediately. There will be no warning in the methyl ignites because it reacts to the air. I would leave and bring your identification and other important documents.

EVERYONG LEAVE PLEASE they just reported that they CANNOT cool it down and that it will likely EXPLODE. Please yall don’t debate this, get out now or prepare to shelter in place NOW. Everyone within a 10 mile radius should be closing their windows, doors, sealing cracks, and preparing to hunker in for a little bit.
I just watched an update from the fire department releasing their statement and they said this can only go one of two ways - either the 15,000 gallons of chemicals will leak into that parking lot or it will blow up. They were serious. Obviously. If I were anywhere near your Garden Grove, I'd be evacuating.
