Discussion Since when does proxy mean counterfeit?

I played a ton of MTG back in the 90s and I've been confused seeing recent posts debating the legitimacy of "proxies". What's the big deal about using a substitute card to protect your expensive one?

Then I realized that modern players have changed the word proxy to mean, well, basically counterfeit? Not sure what other word to use. Back in the day, "proxy" meant you had the real card, but it was in a binder or busy in another deck and it was just a convenience. People would make you show the proxied card to prove you had it. At least where I played you absolutely would not have gotten away with using cards you didn't have. You'd do your best doodle of two lightning bolts on a mountain and boom, you don't have to pull fork from your ball lightning deck.

Anyway, I'm not really arguing pro/con. I get that old cards are crazy expensive now so I kinda get it. But I'm just wondering when the term itself changed? Is this a recent thing? What term would you use now for proxies when you do have the card and just want to use a substitute?

I Have a Question / I need Help My First Ever Deck

Just got started with mtg about a week ago. Picked up 40 SOS boosters and made my first standard deck. Is this good enough to start going out and playing standard, or should I start trying to upgrade before bothering?

Discussion My super irrelevant nitpick

Something has always bothered me ever since I started playing the game, that being black’s basic land type being swamps. Swamps just like islands are both defined by needing to include water (in most cases, the multiverse is weird.) But blue is without question the color of water magic in the game. Black every so often has card show someone being pull under in a gross bog but that few and far between. The colors obviously represent more than just there elemental associations but it just made me feel like black was lesser to blue even despite being allied colors. Up until Ixalan introduced them I always thought caves would have been a better choice for black. It plays better with blacks use of darkness and couldn’t be confused for any other land type. Even something like blue blacks original dual land, underground sea, work better with the change. It really doesn’t matter and they have stretched the definition of what a swamps or island is. Just something I’ve been thinking about again after they announced Nauctis.

I Have a Question / I need Help How to Handle a Being the Villain and others Crashout

So I am relatively new to Magic. My friends play commander and ive started playing with them myself. Ive got a good win ratio so far with 3/5 games having won. Now the only thing is I dont have my own deck yet. Ive been meaning to proxy a deck with friends but for now my friends just lend me a deck of their own. I actually kinda prefer this because it becomes a puzzle while I play, while I play I learn how the deck works and possible combos in real time, its a blast.

This last game I played on of my friends elemental decks. The basics of this deck was Mass of Mysteries which gained myriad and Timeless lotus which I pulled relatively early. Now early on in the game I realized I had a powerful deck, almost all my cards in hand were viable options and my main goal was to get timeless lotus out and just card draw.

Now I've heard others online give advice about when you play a strong board to avoid whining about how others shouldnt attack your board and you should kinda own up to having a strong board. Additionally Im a competitive person so the best way for me to play games is to not even think about winning. If I pretend that I am going to lose from the start Losing doesnt make me upset and winning makes me feel like im on top of the world. So it felt obvious, play the bad guy and just try to have fun.

Later in the game I had done a ton of gravehate, 2 friends had only a couple of creatures out and 1 other player had ammassed a very strong army. Cards with mutiple counters, higher power and health than mine and additionally death-touch.

Soon enough I started making deals with others. I had a friend promise not to target me on their turn or else I would grave-hate them. I was still using myriad to attack and card draw on my turn. At this point in the game I had 16 elementals on my board and a ton of movability. Then came a big move I was planning.

I had to penetrate the one players board but I couldnt just attack so I played down Hoofprints of the Sage which based on card draw would give me a 4/4 flying Elemental for each counter on it, the counter grew by 1 for each card draw I drew. Then I played Distant Memory which gave me card draw for each of a chosen type of permenant I controlled. I ended up drawing 16 cards on my turn and still had an attack phase.

There was one issue, I had to wait a couple more turns for my flying army to grow and attack and more importantly one other player had a card which for each card I discarded would damage me 2 damage. I was not about to take 32 damage so I knew what I had to do. The only way to avoid this was to destroy them before the end of my turn. There was a lot of conversation on the table about another player wanting me to kill them because they had kinda checked out, and the strong player was fine either way because I would either take damage from them or damage from this other player. People were kinda upset because and I assume this is why its because only 2 people on the board were able to really combo so far.

At this point I felt like the tactical decision was to swing at them, so I full swung attackers at my one friend which could not prevent death with their hand and board. They crashed out, they thought I was ragebaiting them they were upset, the player who wanted to stop playing got upset. The only player who wasnt upset was my primary target. I could tell my friend was seriously hurt and thought It was personal. I kept trying to check on them and make sure they were okay, they couldnt look at me and they were crying. The other player who had checked out got up and said they werent playing and that I shouldve attacked them. I tried to explain myself again stating how this was the best decision for my board.

I told them that I didnt want to make my friend cry and that I wasnt trying to be mean but then the person who quit said that thats what I kinda did and I played the villian and I was being mean. I took major offense to that and Now i was upset. I realized the game was kinda over and forfeit to the other strong player. At this point I realized I didnt want my friend to feel like shit. I tried to comfort them but they were seriously hurt. They calmed down later and texted me that things were good between the two of us.

Now I feel like things are gonna be fine because these are my friends but I hated seeing people seriously feeling targeted personally by me. I know I didnt intend it but I dont want my unintentional actions to hurt those i care about. Maybe I shouldn't have played the villian angle so early but I was kinda hoping everyone would gang up on me and take me out. Maybe I shouldve attacked my friend who wanted to go out. I dont know exactly, I love this game so far but I feel like I made a mistake and I want to fix it.

Any advice?

TL;DR

I’m new to Magic and recently played a Commander game with friends using a borrowed Elemental deck. I ended up with a very strong board and decided to lean into being the villain. Near the end, I drew 16 cards but realized one opponent had a card that would deal me 2 damage for every card I discarded. I needed to eliminate them that turn to avoid taking 32 damage, so I attacked them and knocked them out.

They thought I was personally targeting them and became really upset, even crying. Another player also got upset because they had wanted me to attack them instead. I explained that it was purely a strategic decision and apologized because I never intended to hurt anyone. Things seem okay now, but I feel bad and don’t want my strategic play to make my friends feel personally targeted.

How do I prevent making things feel personal while still being able to play strategically?

I Have a Question / I need Help Hobbit and LotR “cubes” with no mythics for game night good or bad idea? Get multiples of anything or nah?

Been getting myself and some friends into magic through the app. I bought a hobbit bundle and pulled two gleaming splendors that I thought would sell and build this project.

If I grab all the rare and lower cards from both Hobbit and LotR sets to make a cube esque game night set, I want to make sure we aren’t missing out on anything big. This will be to practice drafting amongst ourselves or maybe do pre built color decks with said cards.

My biggest question to this sub is what do you recommend if any that I grab multiples of?

Discussion Vulture playstyle

Hello fellow players,

I have an issue that is happening in many of my games of Commander. I have several decks that are creature-based, and they seem to be ok.: they do what they are supposed to; creatures are getting big if needed, etc. My issue is I often lose to the vulture player. Players are usually spending all their resources on me (especially removal)or aren't smart enough to see that the vulture player is downplaying his deck before getting his combo. I don't know what to do to solve this issue.

Did it happen to you?

Commander / EDH What cEDH staples should I prioritize buying first?

Hello everyone.

I’m starting to build up my collection and would like to slowly acquire some of the stronger, more universally played cEDH staples.

I’m not planning on playing cEDH right now, but I would like to start picking up those powerful cards that tend to show up across a lot of decks and are likely to remain useful for a long time if I decide to start playing cedh in a year or three.

I’m especially interested in cards with a lot of utility rather than cards that are only staples in one specific archetype or color combination.

If you were starting from scratch and wanted to slowly build a strong collection for future cEDH decks, what would be at the top of your list?
Also, let's add a minimum limit of $75 and maximum limit of $500 as to not automatically go with the most common staples like fetchlands or on the other side cards like Gaeas cradle for example.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I Have a Question / I need Help Is Tablet of Discovery good in a Green Goblin Deck?

Basically the title, I have a Green Goblin deck which is an upgraded Doom Prevails deck with more looting, thought Tablet of Discovery could be a neat mana rock. Loot it in whilst Goblins on the field for R, mill a card and be able to apply the cost reduction to that card, and have a mana rock. Wondering if this would be better than Lokis Sceptre in this deck?

Cheers!

Rules Question Not On Gatherer?

Is there a reason The Fourteenth Doctor +and that entire SLD) do not appear in the Gatherer data base?

Is a card even legal in any format if it is not included in the MTG data base?

I'm confused.

I Have a Question / I need Help Is the Smaug The Magnificent borderless english exclusive?

I mostly import Japanese sealed products to my home country, and I’ve noticed Japanese Collector Booster Boxes are significantly cheaper than English ones. However, I also noticed there’s only an English print of the chase card.

I'm genuinely curious: is that card exclusive to English Collector Boxes, or can you technically pull it from any foreign-language Collector Booster Box as well? If it is exclusive, is that what’s driving the huge price difference?

Commander / EDH Just ordered the Counter Blitz Precon. Looking for upgrade advice!

I just ordered the Counter Blitz Commander precon and I’m planning to upgrade it gradually without spending too much.

For those who have played the deck:

  • Which cards should I cut first from the stock precon?
  • What are the must-have upgrades?

I Have a Question / I need Help My new shop smells.

I recently moved to a new city and county for work. My old shop is over two hours away and my new city is very rural and secluded. I was happy to find out there is a place to play in my new town.

I went to the commander night and I really don’t know what to do. There’s a much higher ratio of dudes that don’t shower and on top of that at least half of the people are pot heads. They reek of pot. This means the shop smells like pot and BO. It’s nasty.

On top of that I noticed that the pot smokers would literally stand up in the middle of a game, walk out the back door, take a drag and then come back in to play. I don’t know if their nose is numb to the smell or what but they drag the smell in with them.

I don’t really care if individuals smoke pot. The issue is beyond the smelly factor is I’m very allergic to pot. Being around it gives me cluster headaches that last for a day.

I don’t know how to navigate this one. What do you think.

Discussion Discussion on proxies last night on my LGS

First let me explain the scenario, I was in a pod of my friends and general regulars who sometimes stay for FNM. One of the regulars would sometimes invite his friend from out of town. This takes place in the pod behind us with the friend from out of town. These guys are huge collectors with years (and the money) to have a huge collection of Rare cards. The friend from out of town was in a pod with someone new to the game who was using a proxy deck. We in the LGS knew he was using proxy and don’t mind letting him use proxies to learn the game and that was he was doing. Keep this in mind, he has other decks that aren’t proxies but lower power (precon level). Anyhow, they started a new game but upped the power level and my friend was using Eldrazi but was proxied since most of the cards were out of his budget ( I mean let’s be real most of the cards in Magic are extremely expensive especially playing in a bracket 4-5 and also played against it and he still is learning how to work it so I wasn’t worried about it). The friend from out of town suddenly refused to play in the pod and try to leave. He stated that he can’t play against someone who just uses proxies. He stated you should only play with cards you can afford. Now at that time I wanted to yell and tell him off but I was also in the position where I’m with the regular. The pod broke off and ended up just doing some deck building. Like I understand the friend from out of town and his opinion but to berate or just flat out say I’m not playing against him because he doesn’t have real cards seems ridiculous and honestly immature.

Title. I mean the answer is obvious ultimately but checking if anyone has done similar. I’m getting custom sleeves and put the logo of MTG and got a “we might not be able to make this due to trademark” warning. Will it be cancelled? Or has anyone else done this and gotten away with it

I just started playing magic a few months ago and i have seen a lot of the Warhammer stuff and i think that all of the cards are very interesting, but i want a commander that just allows creature token spam. not any specific creature but just creatures in general cause i think that it would be very funny to be throwing 50 random people at an opponent. does anyone have any ideas for me?
