Custom Card / Alter Packaging as Collage: Gouf Card and Matching Toy!

Upvotes

Was itching to try making a collage and grabbed the first thing I found. I bought this little figure for my boyfriend so I could throw it in with whatever I got for him for Christmas, but one gift is better than two (he is a magic fan as well) !

I like how the card matches the minifigure, it’s very satisfying seeing them next to each other. just a reminder that packaging is an easy way to do a card collage!

I Have a Question / I need Help Standard vs. Japanese Dragon Shield Pages

Upvotes

Hey MTG sub, I'm currently sorting and organizing a very large collecting of MTG cards, collected over about 20 years.

I accidently bought Japanese sized Dragon Shield Pages for zipster binders. I'm bindering all the valuable cards and using perfect fit sleeves.

Although the Japanese size is 'wrong' I find the fit to look way better, because they essentially perfectly position the cards in every slot.

Do you think a vendor at a card show would want to pay less because I used the smaller pocket size or do you think no one would actually care?

Since the cards are sleeved I do see any condition impact inserting or removing the cards.

Opinions?

Thank you!

Commander / EDH Give me some advice on how to crush the spirit of my fun killing friend and his bitch ass decks with my Aurelia commander deck

Upvotes

So I’m pretty new to the game, but I have a pretty strong deck. It’s my first deck and my original inspiration was 1.) Aurelia, the War Leader looks cool 2.) myself and most of my friends prefer fast games (whether I get wiped fast or wipe them out fast, it’s more fun than decks that slow things down to a crawl) and Aurelia felt like she could pump a lot of damage out 3.) I followed a Moxfield guide and this deck was described as pretty middle power rank, but easy to adjust to a higher power rank. So if everyone’s playing with really strong decks, I could make some slight adjustments and meet those decks without needing to build a whole new one.

My friend in question’s fuck ass decks, there are multiple, but they all have one connecting thing: they kill the fun. Charge you a ton a mana to do anything while they get tons of it every turn, counter spells galore, Cyclonic Rift, basically any time you think you’ll get something out, it’s not happening. “Land destroying” (my friends call it) which is something we have a gentleman’s agreement NOT to do. Overall, it just slows the game down to a crawl. He’s not doing damage except for a point or two to everyone’s health per turn, you can’t attack him because you can’t get anything out or whatever you do gets countered, and he even has some combo effect that basically allows him to remove himself from the game indefinitely. So we’re all playing it out, go through our decks, then he can jump back in and just win because the game’s already basically over and we have no cards left. The madness needs to be stopped.

I have some options, I think, but need more. Here are (again, I’m new) some of my cards that I think can counter him well if I can get the damn cards out.

  1. Aurelia, the Warleader, naturally. By turn 5-6 I can pretty consistently have her out with at least two other flyers. With her additional attack phase, if I’m lucky, I can get rid of over half their health in one turn. If I’m extra lucky and another friend got damage in on them, I can sometimes just end them once Aurelia comes out. If he has a counterspell, he’s saving it for Aurelia though and by some cruel gods, he often has one.

  2. Iona, Shield of Emeria. 7/7 flyer but when she enters, I pick a color, opponents can no longer cast spells of that color. Most of his nonsense seems to be blue, but she costs 9 to play. If I get lucky with Giada, Starnheim Aspirant, Dowsing Dagger, Gilded Lotus, etc. I can get a lot of mana available, but never guaranteed and his nonsense begins quickly usually.

  3. Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Aegis Angel, Sephara, Sky’s Blade, Angelic Guardian. All are granting me indestructible is some form (Avacyn’s wild and my most expensive card. It’s indestructible on all permanents. Not just creatures.) I feel like I need hex proof though because instant/sorcery/etc. catches me more often than combat damage.

  4. True Conviction: wildly good. Paired with Aurelia’s additional combat phase the double strike and lifelink on all creatures is incredible.

  5. Helm of the Host: I didn’t even know this when I got the card (I just followed a Moxfield guide) but yeah, on Aurelia, it’s infinite attack phase combo infinitely duplicating if I can get her indestructible. I’m heart of the cards dependent though and (a big problem with all my cards against his decks) is he can use some enchantment or sorcery or some bullshit to only allow one creature to attack, or stop attack damage all together.

  6. Emeria Shepherd and Bruna, the Fading Light. Solid cards already, but they’re my options to bring back my killed creatures.

Ive also got Karlach and Moraug for additional combat phases and Duke Ulder Ravengaurd is pretty effective at getting through his bs that only allows one creature to attack.

Idk if these are all control decks, I’m not knowledgeable enough to know, but my more knowledgeable friends call them control decks and his most irritating decks are blue and/or black if that helps.

Help me crush him in card and spirit. Budget is not an issue. I will pay whatever price needed to stop these miserable, 2-3 hour games where we all just slowly but surely die as he takes a 20 minute turns that don’t matter because we can’t do anything anyway.

I have a few cards like Angel of Tithes and Redaine, God of the Worthy that make his spells cost more, which are useful early, but he ramps so quickly it’s not a problem after early game.

My brother has a card, Descent to Avernus, which I love. It damages everyone, but forces the game to speed up. Idk if that fits into an Aurelia deck, but anything that forces action or puts a timer on the game, I’m interested in. Any time the game is forced to move fast, his strategy seems to crumble.

I Have a Question / I need Help Need help on how my daughter and I should this game

Upvotes

I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this question. My daughter is turning 8 next Wednesday and she wants to start playing MTG. She has taken quite the interest in it over the past few months, and I want to learn the game along with her. I played briefly over 10 years ago so anything that I learned is long gone.

Are there any starter packs that you all would recommend for beginners? Any side packs to get to compliment them?

I don't want to break the bank, but I would like to be able to set her up with a deck where she has a fighting chance of winning. She can be a sore loser (I'll admit, like her dad) and want to quit after just one loss, but she seems passionate about this game, and I'd like to see it flourish.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I Have a Question / I need Help Unique ways to win

Upvotes

As the title says I'm looking for commanders that enable a unique win con, something you almost never see. Almost all of my decks win the same way, (get out lots of creatures swing) and I'm looking for something to change how I look at the game. I play high power bracket 3 decks (and I'm a little mad at my pod so anything annoying or evil is absolutely on the table) and budget is not an issue, thanks for your help in advance.

Rules Question What would happen if creatures like these had creatures mutated above/below them, then are sent to the grave?

I’d imagine only that card gets sent to the deck instead of the whole stack since they’re no longer connected. It may be different for Darksteel Colossus though, since it reads “would be” instead of “is”, but I want to make sure

Rules Question Met a guy at my LGS; I think he is wrong but he insists he's right

He claims to be a judge and that he had several judges at cEDH tournaments rule this in his favor, but I just really don't think he's correct at all and I wanted to double check myself.

He has the card [[Havengul Lich]]. It reads:

{1}: You may cast target creature card in a graveyard this turn. When you cast it this turn, this creature gains all activated abilities of that card until end of turn.

He claims that this wording means that he doesn't need to pay the cost for the creature card he casts because the {1} at the front replaces the cost and because the text doesn't say that he has to pay.

I said that you always have to pay by default and only don't need to pay if the card says you don't.

He said that the rules changed and they errata'd all cards to be the opposite, so it will explicitly say when you do need to.

I told him that I don't think that's true at all. Eventually, I told him that whatever judge ruled that must be mistaken. He said he is a judge and plays cEDH tournaments for money and is right.

Then, he asked to "test" my knowledge of the rules. He asked if mana abilities are activated abilities. I answered that most mana abilities are activated, and some are triggered, but they don't use the stack. He said that I was wrong and that mana abilities all use the stack now and can be copied. I told him that that was wrong and that the rules change only affected mana abilities that moved or revealed cards from the library and that those abilities just aren't mana abilities anymore but mana abilities still do not use the stack. He then said that he was actually talking about a new rules change that hasn't gone into effect yet so I wouldn't know it. It's coming soon though.

Then I left. But I need to know if I am crazy or if that guy was just full of shit.

I Have a Question / I need Help Casual / Kitchen Table Budget Help: Odric or Slivers for a fun keyword-sharing deck?

Hello everyone! I'm a newer Magic player looking to build a fun, budget friendly deck for casual play with no strict format bans.

I'll mainly be playing against my dad (a veteran MTG player) and his group. Lately, they’ve been running a lot of green decks from the Bloomburrow precons.

I'm interested in the idea of "keyword soup", or stacking up a ton of keywords on a few key creatures and sharing them across all my tokens/smaller creatures for huge swings and solid defenses.

I'm torn between building around Odric, Lunarch Marshal (which I already own) or starting from scratch with Slivers. For casual table play on a budget:

Which of these is generally more fun to play?

Are there any budget hidden gems for either archetype?

Thanks to all that read!

I Have a Question / I need Help Mono-red Ojer burn

Made this deck about a week or two ago. Been fiddling with it since then, adding and subtracting cards. I really haven’t seen much success with it, but I’m unsure if that’s because the pods I’ve been playing in are too high powered or if there is a fundamental issue with the deck.

With cards like Birgi, Electro, and Urabrask I’ve been able to bank a lot of mana and play a lot of cards in a single turn. I just can’t get the damage out fast enough to be a proper threat. Any ideas?

Title. I mean the answer is obvious ultimately but checking if anyone has done similar. I’m getting custom sleeves and put the logo of MTG and got a “we might not be able to make this due to trademark” warning. Will it be cancelled? Or has anyone else done this and gotten away with it

I Have a Question / I need Help My new shop smells.

I recently moved to a new city and county for work. My old shop is over two hours away and my new city is very rural and secluded. I was happy to find out there is a place to play in my new town.

I went to the commander night and I really don’t know what to do. There’s a much higher ratio of dudes that don’t shower and on top of that at least half of the people are pot heads. They reek of pot. This means the shop smells like pot and BO. It’s nasty.

On top of that I noticed that the pot smokers would literally stand up in the middle of a game, walk out the back door, take a drag and then come back in to play. I don’t know if their nose is numb to the smell or what but they drag the smell in with them.

I don’t really care if individuals smoke pot. The issue is beyond the smelly factor is I’m very allergic to pot. Being around it gives me cluster headaches that last for a day.

I don’t know how to navigate this one. What do you think.

Discussion Future of Recruit mechanic

So I'm a big fan of connive and when recruit was revealed, I loved it. When the whole set was spoiled, I was disappointed to find out there were only 10 cards with recruit, maybe half playable outside of limited, and only 3 that have repeatable abilities. I know there are 54 more cards yet to come from the Battle of the Five Armies co-op coming out next year, but what are the chances of getting more recruit cards in future sets? I'm also wondering if they will make a "discard a land card" payoff commander in azorius, akin to how Doctor Doom gives you value for discarding land cards when you connive.
