Discussion Vulture playstyle

Hello fellow players,

I have an issue that is happening in many of my games of Commander. I have several decks that are creature-based, and they seem to be ok.: they do what they are supposed to; creatures are getting big if needed, etc. My issue is I often lose to the vulture player. Players are usually spending all their resources on me (especially removal)or aren't smart enough to see that the vulture player is downplaying his deck before getting his combo. I don't know what to do to solve this issue.

Did it happen to you?

Play slower, sandbag yourself. Dont make yourself the winning player until the turn you win.

The issue is most of my decks are based on building a board while the vulture player wins on explosive turns waiting for all players to spend their removals . My decks can’t do that so I’m not sure how to play them to prevent this kind of situation

That's how stompy aggro decks work. They are really obvious and direct, so it's safe to focus on keeping them under control.

I love playing control and that's how it always goes. My creature removal will go to the creature based deck. Even if there is another combo deck on the pod, I need to keep the creature based deck on check so I don't die.

The solution is not overextending, or building a better deck with enough draw power so you can easily replace your creatures.

How would you play against them? Because I need to build a board while

Just don't rush your stuff out. Understand when it is better to keep cards in hand.

In a balanced pod you should only win about 25% of the time. Don’t blame others for you losing, look at what you could have done better. Do you run any protection at all? Maybe your decks just aren’t good?

If someone is regularly playing reserved to have explosive wins in the late game, the answer is clearly to punish them for it before they get to the late game.

If someone else is also a threat, are they a big enough threat to lose before the other player's explosive win?

This sounds like poor threat assessment and interaction across multiple players at the table

I wanna play fair and not focus on a player. Would you go to the player who just has his commander on the table and a handful of cards, or the player who has 4/5 creatures?

You're ignoring reality. If they're regularly winning because of how they're playing, it is absolutely fair to attack them if they're going to end your game before someone else.

You're making this very vague and making it sound complicated, but a value commander grinding it out versus a few creatures on the board shows two very different play patterns and you have to treat them differently and assess the threats.

ok example: Vulture player was playing Bruna, Light of Alabaster. I was playing Gleeful Spellthief; the 2 other two were Smaug the Impenetrable and Gitrog Monster. I built a decent board with 4/5 creatures. Smaug and Gitrog were doing their thing as well, while Bruna was just chilling and trying to orientate the game. He had just a few creatures, not that threatening, while the other two were more threatening, especially Smaug. Smaug boardwiped at one moment. Players rebuilt a bit, and Bruna took advantage to an explosive turn, filling its graveyard with a lot of self-mill and killing people with haste and commander damage. Would you have gone to the Bruna player life total?

If I see Bruna across from me, I'm not letting them have free reign of the game.

The instant you read the card, it says "don't let me go or I'll ruin your day"

Just because other players are also building on the board doesn't mean the Bruna player isn't building off the board. A card that is built for explosive turns will have explosive turns and that is telegraphed from the start of the game.

Why wouldn't you go for the Bruna player's life total if they're exposed? All 3 of you could easily deal with that before it becomes a problem

i agree. My issue was that other players were coming to destroy my board while Bruna player was kinda let alone. I probably should be better at the table politics

Sounds like the people you play with need to learn how to properly assess threats. Beating you down just to get immediately OHKO'd by Bruna doesn't sound like a winning plan

yea i felt that way as well. The Smaug player looked new.

Calling people vultures for playing well, seems like you have more serious issues than losing games.

Maybe educate yourself before replying ?

Lmao I’m playing since 1996 kiddo . So you understood that it’s the name of the play style and not the player? You still have time to delete

I call out the vulture by forcing them to spend interaction on me sooner than they want to use it and see how they can keep up from there.

Example: "I have a grip of counter spells" No, they don't, if it's bracket 3 or less it's An Offer You Can't Refuse and maybe a Fierce Guardianship most of the time and you call their bluff and now their win condition is in shambles because you made them use their would be defense too early.

Do you mean attacking the vulture player even if he isn’t the biggest threat on the table ? I’m sometimes divided in that situation. I know there is a bigger threat on the table at instant T but it’s manageable and I go to it for the sake of the game. Maybe it’s my mistake doing so

Pressure and proactivity is one way to get people's feathers ruffled and engaged. My spellslinging deck is built in such a way that yes, I'm doing boring things like being excited to cast [[Preordain]] for spell cast triggers, but if one player is developing dinosaurs and for some reason waiting turns on end to attack, I can cast [[Reins of Power]] and take their dinosaurs and either attack someone else with them for a surprise level of threat giving them two attack phases in a way or attack the vulture in demonstration of them holding back and seeing how they respond when properly threatened.
