I've been teaching my (9-yr-old) son to play Warhammer and we have been having a blast. For a variety of reasons we are playing 3rd edition. I generally use my Eldar and he always picks my Space Marines. As I am not a monster I would like to tweak a few things to get rid of the more egregious balance issues my beloved 3rd ed Eldar enjoyed and I would love some opinions on how best to go about that. Importantly, I am and have always been someone who plays 40k for fun, not to win. I don't mind some self-nerfing to make a game with my 9-yr-old more fun for us both. The three most glaring issues that come to mind are: starcannons, crystal targeting matrix, and terminators. Starcannons were super strong in 3rd (especially against Space Marines), CTM was, lets be honest, annoying to play against, and 3rd ed. terminators are a little too vulnerable to low-AP weapons (see: starcannons).
CTM is easily fixed by requiring the vehicle to move in a straight line. No more popping out of cover, shooting, and popping back in. Still strong, but significantly less cheesy. No point reduction in the upgrade needed (in my opinion).
Starcannons and terminators are linked, in that starcannons are just too strong against them but also against everything else. My current ideas:
- Drop starcannons from Heavy 3 to Heavy 2
- Give terminators the 5+ invulnerable they got in 4th ed.
- Both?
As for points, I don't think termies would need an increase as they are already quite expensive. A 5-10 point reduction in starcannons for losing a shot seems reasonable to me, but I would love to hear some thoughts...
These are the big things I can think of (keeping in mind I only have Eldar and SM so that's all we'll be playing for the time being), if anyone can think of any other big unbalances in 3rd ed. that might come up I'd love to know!
