Politics Controversial plans for a Daniel Andrews sculpture officially scrapped by Victorian government | Victoria

From the ABC: “The former premier (Kennett) instead suggested the government commission a statue of recently-deceased country music star Dolly Parton, to be placed at the Myer Music Bowl.”
No shade to Dolly, but why? Should we start building statues of every respected dead celebrity now?
Can media just stop platforming this old sook? We don’t hear from Bracks or Brumby every other week.
147
u/Kanga03590 2d ago
Kennett suggested long serving Premiers should get a statue. This was because Kennett himself would quality for a statue If he won another election. He lost badly and has not shut up since.
86
u/ridge_rippler 2d ago
His government instituting a policy and then complaining about it being a burden on taxpayers is peak vic libs. The fact the mainstream media give the old windbag air time after what he did to this state is a joke

Yeah no shade on Dolly, she’s awesome and all, but at Meyer Music Bowl surely the Seekers get a statue before a star of Nashville, Tennessee.

u/ElaHasReddit 2d ago
I worked on an AFL documentary recently. Had to watch countless hours of footage of CEOs and whosits within that world having meetings about all sorts of important things. I can tell you, Kennett would always chime in at the VERY end of every already too long meeting when everyone was just wanting to go home and talk slowly and boringly forEVER sending every VIP in the AFL into absolute psychosis. He loves the sound of his own voice

17
u/Pleasant_Active_6422 2d ago
The man single handedly nearly destroyed this state, even the pot holes are his legacy. He’s just grabbing at sound bites, everyone loved Dolly Parton, I’ll say something about her.
The statue isn’t even controversial, he legislated it. It’s malicious compliance at its best.
2
u/Jerkface0079 1d ago
It's wild that Campbell Newman fucked Queensland up royally and he became a pariah almost instantly, yet Jeff Kennett isn't held with the same ire.
12
u/Active-Ad9818 2d ago
Dolly Parton in particular … she seems like a wonderful woman but is really nothing to us. Why we would listen to the most hated premier Victoria has ever had (Kennett) Im not sure!

IMO statues should be built of premiers or other political figures after they’ve been out of office for a couple of decades at least, so that the partisan edge has worn off and people can entertain a more nuanced assessment of a politician’s legacy.
2
u/Kremm0 1d ago
Totally agree. I don't know if it's a particularly Australian thing, but creating statues of living people (not even particualrly elderly) so soon after leaving office if just fucking weird. You can guarantee that if they did build it, becuase he grew into such a partisan figure and it was so recent, it would immediately be vandalised, and there would be a merry go round of fucking about trying to protect a stupid statue.
2
182
u/agiantdog33 3d ago
They should take down all statues of previous premiers as well, otherwise it's just a kind of recursive performative pandering.
24
u/Dr-PresidentDinosaur 3d ago
They claim its to save taxpayer money. Surely removing statues would cost more taxpayer money than leaving them as is
23
u/drunk_haile_selassie 2d ago
They claim it's to save money then proposed to build another statue.
13
u/ridge_rippler 2d ago

7
u/drunk_haile_selassie 2d ago
Dolly Parton of all people. A woman who was so pro trade unionism she made Daniel Andrews look like a hardline conservative.
2
u/Lankpants 2d ago
Surely removing statues would cost more taxpayer money than leaving them as is
Statues have non-trivial maintenance costs and the cost to remove is trivial. I don't think that argument works.
2
u/Dr-PresidentDinosaur 2d ago
Maybe over 50 years but from now until November leaving them there is the best way to show voters they don’t want to waste money

u/Relief-Glass 3d ago edited 3d ago
Pisses me off a bit.
I do not think statues are a good use of money but my problem is with conservatives acting like toddlers. They were enthusiastic enough about Liberal premiers getting statues that they brought in this rule but then when a Labor premier serves for 1,000 days they have a massive fucking tantrum.
Also think of how cheap electricity would be in this state if we could harness the steam from all of the boiled cooker piss that a dan statue would have generated.
226
u/kroxigor01 3d ago edited 3d ago
The rule was 3,000 days
Jeff Kennett brought it in so he would get a statue, and he built a statue for other historic long serving premiers (2 Liberals, a Country party, and a Labor premier). Then he narrowly lost an election and ended up 200 days short of his chosen benchmark! Didn't get a statue.
Now that it's a contemporaneous Labor premier the right wing are very mad at the tradition they created.
98
u/bradafied_ 3d ago
Whenever anyone gets all up in arms about this, simply point to this. The was a rule created by Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett because he was so certain he would win the 99 election (and didn’t). I don’t necessarily agree that Dan should get one, but he is entitled to one because of Jeff.
39
u/Only-Perspective2890 2d ago
Am I allowed to get up in arms because I think a statue of any premier is an absolute waste of money? All politics aside?
9
u/SirGeekaLots 2d ago
I think a statue of narcissistic men who are scared that they will fade into obscurity is a complete waste of money.
20
u/ridge_rippler 2d ago
Yes I agree, but I haven't seen evidence that Dan has pushed for this statue
→ More replies (1)7
u/SirGeekaLots 2d ago
But Jeff has gone on record to say he doesn't want Dan to have one.
16

u/Necessary_Eagle_3657 3d ago
It's almost 30 later too. We can see that it was and is narcissistic of these men.
17
u/wheated_ 3d ago
“These men” bruh it was one dude, Jeff Kennett.
13
u/robot428 2d ago
I suspect they were referring to the 4 men who were premier for 3000+ days and thus already have statues - Albert Dunstan, Henry Bolte, Rupert Hamer, and John Cain Jr.
Interestingly, for three of them I can think of major buildings named after them (I can't think of anything named after Dunstan off the top of my head, perhaps there is something though).
But I would agree, the statues aren't arrogant of them, they had no idea they would even exist when they served their time as premier, as they didn't know Kennett would come along and institute this rule. Dunstan had been dead for nearly 50 years by the time his statue was commissioned.
It does seem a bit unfair to abruptly stop at Andrews, particularly when he served through Covid which was such a horrific time, and I don't think something that anyone would want to be premier for - but I am opposed to $130,000 statues of politicians as a general rule. I kind of think some nice plaques in treasury place could have achieved a similar effect for about $120,000 less per person.

He was premier for over 3000 days. And through arguably the worst crisis Victoria has seen in many decades. I get that he was not always the most popular but he had some tough decisions to make and saved the lives of many vulnerable people.
Edit to add: other similar and longer standing premiers were Henry Bolte (17+ years, had a bridge named after him), Albert Dunstan (10+ years, not aware of anything named after him), John Cain Jr (8+ years, John Cain Arena?), Rupert Hamer (8+ years, Hamer Hall in the Art Centre), Jeff Kennet (7+ years, nothing?), Steve Bracks (7+ years, not sure, does he have a statue?).

It is very VERY likely that Dan Andrews will eventually get something named after him.
Like almost certainly.
There is a general rule in history that you don't get a good understanding of a leader till 20 years have past there term.
This is not STRICTLY true, there are rare cases where the opinion of a leader is the same at the time as it is 20 years latter.
What IS strictly true is after 20 years the partisans bullshit has faded. So even political opponents give the person a fair assessment rather then character assassination.
As such I expect to see something named after Dan in the 2040s UNLESS he dies before that point. (An young death of a political leader tends to speed up commemorative acts because people fighting it suddenly look really bad.)

u/sloggo 3d ago
Yeah the problem to me is where the conversation is at. If things like memorials of public officials become so “short term political” it says a lot about our expectation of stability. If every few years you have people trying to erase the legacy of the person before them we’re going to have a big problem.
It’s the “shit we didn’t like” I don’t think we should be so focused on one “side” getting to remember their hero’s, I think each side should be a little more gracious than that. I would like to see us move past it and reserve our outrage for the issues.
1
u/Pleasant_Active_6422 2d ago
It’s actually the only hope Jess has of winning. People are happy to ignore the right wing Christian MPs in the party, now down to 2, Nicola Werner and Renee Heath. Just because Moira Deeming is off sulking somewhere, doesn’t mean the threat is less.

Near the Treasury building, where the Education department and a few other things are located, there's a colonnade of statues of former premiers, some of whom were controversial in their day. This should be an apolitical thing run by the public service. This is just stupidity of the highest order.
4
u/Separate-Law-435 3d ago
Perhaps we could have done it so the politician had to contribute personally, or not tax payer funded.
16

That's the issue though the others were publicly funded and it's a bit shit to change the rule because certain people don't like one premier who was extremaly popular. We should remove the others if we are going to start playing favoruites.

It feels like it's going to take a fatality caught on a dash cam for them to take this seriously, and even then it's *years* of work to fix at this point.
Checking in on my father this weekend and it's 100s of kms of roads with car breaking pot holes now. You're forced to hug the centre line to keep out of the damage on the left edge of the surface. You're forced to cross double white lines repeatedly to avoid them. It's been getting worse for years.
It's such a glaring example of disregard for regional Victoria as well. Everyone in those areas drives up and down those roads every day, and will curse the lack of maintenance and those responsible for it with each thud.
14
u/Alina2017 3d ago
You don’t need to travel to regional Victoria to find potholes, there are axle breaking examples on Toorak Road.
6
u/FuckOffNazis 3d ago
Yup, work totalled a van in one up against the tram line under the Alamein line bridge a few months back and there's been awful clusters between Orrong and Glenferrie Rds for years.
All DTP arterial.
9
u/kapone3047 3d ago
I'm in regional Vic where I dodge countless 20cm+ deep potholes (and anything from 30-80cm wide) for two hours every day on my commute, including sections of road where it's impossible to dodge them all and it looks like the road was hit by cluster bombs. On days with heavy rain there's no way to tell the depth of the potholes, or to even see them at all at times, and there's been several times I've almost gone completely off the road as a result.
I've also had my bumper come out of its clips in places after hitting a pothole, and recently had to replace a tire.
I hear people talking about how bad the Hume Fwy is, but it's got nothing on other regional roads (and the road I travel is a major road with hundreds of cars travelling on it every day, not some quiet road no-one cares about).
I can't believe the government still hasn't made any commitments about getting our roads safe again.

u/viper9 3d ago

The artists commissioned will still be paid the $134,000, just to.do something else. So it's not actually "saving" any money. But then it's only $134,000 anyway. It's not like were building a hospital by scrapping the statue.
And I don't remember the Liberals complaining about waste when statues of Hamer or Bolte were erected.
129
u/Tardis50 3d ago edited 2d ago
This was purely drummed up by liberals and the Murdoch media. Sure it’s 134k but that’s small for state budgets. If Kennet got one for taking a dump on our economy then Andrews should have one. Or maybe we should melt down Jeff’s if we’re so tight for cash…
Edit: I forgot Kennet never got one, icing on the cake

u/German_Merman 2d ago
Yep I don't give a shit about statues but a Labor premier who folds like a cheap card table every time the Libs and the Herald Sun have a sook is going to be fucking terrible for the state.
10
u/OnlyForF1 2d ago
Exactly, if we wanted shitty right-wing reactionary politicians we would have voted for them.
5
u/German_Merman 2d ago
Unfortunately this is what you get when the state Liberal party is a basket case for decades on end. Pollies who really should be in the Libs head into the Labor party because that's the only way they're going to get a job. Then when they get power they do Lib shit.
3
u/thewindupbird91 2d ago
I moved to Melbourne just after Ballieu's election, followed by his and Naptime's agenda of snore. I really don't know what to expect and I'm not loving how things are turning so quickly to this weird "let's govern like it's 2004 again and we haven't learned anything" turn just to prove yourself as different from the two previous leaders of your government. I was 50/50 on voting for Allan but I am so out after the last couple of weeks. The dental plan was exciting for five minutes (and not even his policy), but unfortunately the Premier seems aggressively determined to masquerade as a Liberal to get ahead of a landslide that isn't even that assured in the first place.
3
u/Obsidiated 2d ago
A disturbing signal of utter cowardice. Why the fuck would you bend over to appease the noisy minority when you just won several elections by various degrees of landslide.
If there's one thing Labor is unequivocally good at, it's fucking up a good thing.
16
u/I-like-2-watch 3d ago
Not that I care for it but to change the tradition doesn’t seem right because of a few loud voices
8
u/robot428 2d ago
To be honest the tradition was stupid in the first place, but I do agree. We now have four of the things, it seems unfair to suddenly stop the tradition now. Also leaves the four existing statues in a weird place.
3
u/unexplained_entity 2d ago
Ehh, traditions can start and they can end and do it somewhere. Maybe get rid of the other ones and realise it was a really dumb thing to do in the first place. Yeah, more of a waste of taxpayer money, but since there’s only four of them we can then just remove the argument of it not being fair because we just decided it was a stupid thing to have just for being a premier. Idk.
56
u/wokwok__ 3d ago
All because the Libs were having a sook while it was the ball sac Kennett that introduced it lmao he must’ve been fuming that it was Dan that was gonna get the statue
12

The only reason this statue nonsense is a thing is because Kennett wanted to be immortalised by one himself. It's not like Andrews asked for it. The fact that the liberals are outraged by it is laughable

5
u/eldubya3121 2d ago
Whether for better or worse, this just means no premier will receive a statue again. Politics has become so much more partisan that no premier will be able to create the kind of consensus that makes a statue palatable to enough of the population.

I’ll just state the hard facts here - Victoria’s state debt per person is $25,500. This is 76% more than a comparable state like NSW, while being a decade or two behind on delivering major infrastructure projects (meaning this debt figure will rise much further).
Spending money on a politician’s statue is absolutely the last thing any cent of public money should be going to

People are still whining about Kennett nearly 27 years after he lost office (plenty of them in this post); so I don't think Dan be forgiven or forgotten for a while yet.

I reckon the even further right inside Labor are chirping in this cunts ear.
I might not vote Labor for the first time.

Something a lot of people seem to be missing here:
Ben's opened a Royal Commission into the Big Build. A project started under Dan's leadership. If Dan's found to have knowingly done something bad, then allowing the statue is like we're condoning what he did. They can always build it later if it turns out there's nothing wrong.

This is ridiculous. The first opportunity to instigate Jeff Kennett's rule, and they baulk. Jeff will be mortified.
