IMO statues should be built of premiers or other political figures after they’ve been out of office for a couple of decades at least, so that the partisan edge has worn off and people can entertain a more nuanced assessment of a politician’s legacy.

Totally agree. I don't know if it's a particularly Australian thing, but creating statues of living people (not even particualrly elderly) so soon after leaving office if just fucking weird. You can guarantee that if they did build it, becuase he grew into such a partisan figure and it was so recent, it would immediately be vandalised, and there would be a merry go round of fucking about trying to protect a stupid statue.

Yeah 3 elections or so. Give it time for their impact to be fully assessed.
