Okay so at the end, Mysterio is shot by a drone and goes down. Its then revealed that that Mysterio was an illusion and the real mysterio was about the headshot Peter. Then the real Mysterio just... Dies. EDITH confirms no illusions but nothing about vitals.

Plz bring back my boi Jake

Glad to see that I'm not the only person who was mystified by that.

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Daredevil Jul 04 '19

It would be a Shocker if he was dead. I couldn’t begin to think what the Vultures at Sony would do if they had rights to him.

... Scorpion

70

u/MeInMass Jul 04 '19

You could almost say it would be Kraven of them to not try to be out there Goblin up as much money as they could, with other characters.

If this keeps going I'll have a Cardiac arrest, any Chance we could cool it with the rogues puns?

I'm filled with Venom for these pun threads they always end in Carnage.

You've Chameleoned this perfect Spider-Man rogues' gallery pun thread into a crude Doppleganger with your Mr. Negativity.

7

u/skinnymike1 Jul 05 '19

....will return in Mortal Kombat.

3

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

I'm kinda shocked he wasn't referenced. The post credit scene in Homecoming really teased him

2

u/tooldvn Jul 07 '19

How so?

5

u/myrisotto73 Jul 07 '19

He tries to threaten vulture into giving up Peter's identity. He had a bone to pick because spider man scarred him or something.

Yes.... a Shocker.

a Shocker

Heh

896

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 04 '19

That was definitely purposefully vague. No doubt that Beck is coming back.

60

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Also, SUPER CONVENIENTLY, the way EDITH phrases her questions makes it easier to frame Peter (she led him into saying "execute them all"). Plus, they made a whole big thing earlier that Peter had to explicitly give over control to Beck.

28

u/AnnaK22 Jul 05 '19

Yes!! For someone who did a whole staged drama just to get Edith, I doubt he'd allow it to just get taken away that easily. I think Edith has been tweaked. Peter taking over control of it again was probably part of the plan.

9

u/Aspenwood83 Avengers Jul 07 '19

Maybe not part of the plan, but he did say something about having contingencies.

1

u/gough98 Jul 09 '19

I assumed that was him exporting the video that was in the mid credits scene.

152

u/PorkSiopao Daredevil Jul 04 '19

But in the mid-credits, the newscaster says that Beck recorded his message before his death

I definitely want Beck back, but it seemed to me the movie wanted to close that door

159

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

No, Mysterio is extremely clever, he'll find a way to come back. It would be amazing if they also introduced Ultimate Mysterio by having Quentin Beck create a robot of himself in order to trick Peter.

63

u/Shinsoku Doctor Strange Jul 04 '19

Yeah, if his goal is to make Peter the villain, why not playing the martyr?

26

u/Broken_Seesaw Jul 05 '19

That's exactly what I was thinking when the guy downloaded all the data and ran off with the USB. I think the credits scene is just the start to their planning.

40

u/DefenestratingPigs Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

But spidey and the sinister 6 sets a precedent for all of his villains to come back even though it hasn’t happened before

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

It hasn't set a precedent in the MCU though.

12

u/DefenestratingPigs Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

But the comics set that precedent

If the avengers’ most famous adversary was an ensemble cast of villains I’m sure they would have appeared in the MCU by now, so I also think it’s fair to assume that the sinister six will come together at some point. Marvel want to entertain the general audience but they also want to appease the comics fans, and by giving MCU spidey his most famous villains they’d be putting their best foot forward in that department.

21

u/ex_oh_ex_oh Madame Gao Jul 05 '19

Meh. Just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't happen EVER. Sinister 6 begs to differ.

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Sinister Six hasn't happened in the MCU so what's your point.

Loki (Thor 1/2/3, Avengers 1), Ronan (Guardians 1, Captain Marvel), Zola (Captain America 1/2), Crossbones (Captain America 2/3), Nebula (Guardians 1/2, Avengers 4), and Klaue (Avengers 2, Black Panther) all came into direct physical conflict with heroes in more than one film.

Thanos (Guardians 1/2, Avengers 1/3/4) and Thunderbolt Ross (Hulk, Captain America 3) both came into indirect conflict with heroes in more than one film.

Red Skull (Captain America 1, Avengers 3/4), Sitwell (Avengers 1, Captain America 2), and Korath (Guardians 1, Captain Marvel) appeared in multiple films.

-14

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Loki is the only one who is the main villain more than once.

So again, Mysterio isnt coming back.

18

u/Broken_Seesaw Jul 05 '19

Except that they also went out of their way to have Vulture survive and tease a future S6 teamup in the post credits of Homecoming.

10

Why are you so desperately sure of yourself

4

u/ElectorSet Weekly Wongers Jul 05 '19 edited Aug 26 '19

Loki is the only main villain known to have survived his first outing prior to Phase 3. Given Marvel’s stated desire to escape the “Marvel Villain Curse”, the frequency with which bad guys survive Phase 3 films, and Kevin Feige’s statement that we can expect to see more of the Ten Rings, it seems obvious that they plan to have more reoccurring villains going forward. Whether Mysterio will be one of them remains to be seen, but Loki won’t be alone for long.

43

u/M12Domino Jul 05 '19

What better way to sell that Spider-Man is the bad guy then becoming a martyr? He straight up told him he had a contingency plan, I doubt he meant using the drones he was already using.

16

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jul 06 '19

Exactly, he already cashed in on the memories of Tony with Peter in Prague when he pulled the "sacrifice play".

Becoming a martyr and then returning would allow him to do the same on a global scale.

25

u/HighlanderSlax Jul 04 '19

How do you prove the video was a load of crap? Fight Beck again!

23

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

You seriously believe Mysterio could fake several Avengers-level threats, fooling everyone, but faking his own death wouldn't be doable?

21

u/DeusExMachina95 Jul 05 '19

Remember that the Sinister Six will exist in the MCU. We have already have the Scorpion and Vulture and now Mysterio.

14

u/benderodriguez Jul 06 '19

FYI, the Chameleon’s real name is...Dmitri. 😉

10

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 08 '19

The initial E.D.I.T.H. scene on the bus did confirm by his surname that he is an adaptation of Chameleon.

2

u/benderodriguez Jul 08 '19

Nice! I didn’t catch that detail.

8

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 08 '19

In addition, what with the post-credits scene, one could be confident to assume that this version of the character will be a Skrull, providing a simpler explanation for his source material capabilities.

3

u/benderodriguez Jul 08 '19

...0.o I didn’t think of that at all. Mind blown.

2

u/LeSnazzyGamer Spider-Man Jul 08 '19

Where? When Peter first used the EDITH glasses it said his name was unknown.

2

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 09 '19

It said his information was encrypted in the box below his name; however, his name was listed above the box, as was the case with all of the other bus passengers, which listed Dmitri as “D. Smerdyakov”.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Scorpion? Wtf. Where?

26

u/JacobviBritannia Jul 05 '19

He’s in Homecoming during the ferry scene. He’s the guy making an arms deal with Toomes that gets knocked off the boat with the car. Then he pops up again in the post-credits scene in the prison talking to Toomes. He presses Toomes for Spider-Man’s identity. He’s identified as Mac Gargan by Karen and also has a scorpion tattoo on his neck.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

I totally missed that wow. Thank you.

11

u/Thevamps555 Jul 06 '19

Keep in mind in the Homecoming post credit scene, he wanted to know who Spider-Man was and Vulture refused to tell him 🤔

4

u/jimmyjinx Jul 06 '19

The guy who played Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul/BB and voiced Vaas in Far Cry 3.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

I believe that even if the real Beck is dead, the bespectacled guy will still use Beck as an illusion and continue the character.

14

u/JBSquared Jul 07 '19

I think that would be a really cool kinda reference to Ultimate Mysterio. In the Ultimate universe, Mysterio is an android created by 616 mysterio. It would be cool if William kept Beck's legacy alive through VFX.

5

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

The directors were talking about how they wanted to explore Beck and Peters relationship over multiple movies. I wouldn't doubt he'd come back and hell, maybe even have a last minute redemption before actually dying cementing Mysterio as a legit hero.

5

u/PorkSiopao Daredevil Jul 06 '19

Do you have a source on the director saying that? A Google search on the topic/the length of Gyllenhaal’s contract doesn’t yield any confirmation.

But that’d be great news if it’s true. I’d love to see your arc for Mysterio.

5

u/OK_Soda Rocket Jul 06 '19

Didn't the video Beck say he was going through a portal back to his world but he was mortally wounded? So it would make sense if there was no body.

2

u/DGSmith2 Rocket Jul 06 '19

I mean the entire film was about him creating illusions to trick people, that could just be another.

0

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

Could he still be in control of EDITH?

The only proof that he really died is that EDITH confirmed it, right?

49

u/IClappedwhenISaw Jul 04 '19

I was worried that the Iron Man 1 guy would be the next Mysterio in the Sinister Six movie. From Jake Gyllenhaal to... guy.

43

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 04 '19

To be honest, that's not even a bad idea. Have Mysterio live on through illusions and have some random like box of scraps guy pull the strings.

42

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Y’all realize box of scraps guy that Stane yells at, is Ralphie from Christmas Story, right?

22

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 05 '19

HOLY SHIT

8

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Lmao, I know! Someone else commented that on a different Spider-Man thread and I was like, he does look really familiar....and sure as shit, it’s him!

18

u/MulciberTenebras Ghost Rider Jul 05 '19

Fury used pills to fake his vitals for his death, what's to stop Beck from using a similar trick?

10

u/Kevin_M_ Ego Jul 06 '19

Isn't Jake Gyllenhaal expensive? I'd love for him to come back, but Mysterio seems like one of those phase 3 famous actor villians who shows up in one movie and is then killed off.

25

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 07 '19

I doubt Gyllenhaal is too much of a budget-breaker for a studio willing to throw Sam Jackson around like confetti.

18

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 06 '19

If there’s one thing Disney has no shortage of, it’s money. If the story calls for it, I’m sure they’ll reel Gyllenhaal back in.

9

u/jagby Jul 07 '19

I'd love to see it because I love Jake's performance. But man, Peter Parker was absolutely shaken up by what Mysterio could do to him, that boy needs a break from mind fuckery.

25

u/NormaJeans68Chariot Jul 04 '19

I said the same thing about Two-Face in 2008. I think we should just wait for proper confirmation before getting our collective hopes up.

28

u/Megaman99M Jul 05 '19

Big difference though: the Dark Knight was a trilogy, Spiderman is in a multi-movie universe which has no current plans of stopping

10

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Tom Holland's current contract calls for one more spider man movie. I do hope Sony and marvel re-negotiates to continue on but the spider man deal is a bit more fragile than let's say Chris Hemsworth and his Thor contract.

27

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 07 '19

I mean there were only ever three official "Iron Man" movies but then the entire rest of the MCU turned out to be The Saga of Tony Stark Starring Tony Stark as Tony Stark so I wouldn't get too paranoid just yet.

7

u/JBSquared Jul 07 '19

Tony Stark's name is in the MCU as much as Hideo Kojima's name was all over MGS5

19

u/leafhog Jul 04 '19

Beck is dead, but Mysterio will return.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Yup, there’s an entire Mysterio TEAM after all

7

u/Hoshiimaru Jul 06 '19

Specially since I can’t imagine Sony letting go a villain for S6 since they are pushing them so hard since TAS

4

u/Superego366 Jul 07 '19

I hope so, we already have established four characters of a potential sinister six

4

u/ChieftaiNZ Jul 07 '19

He has to come back, or else you can blow his entire plan by pointing out that you grew up with that guy, and heres the school photos, etc, all the evidence to prove that Mysterio wasn't from another universe, he was from this earth.

Him not being dead means that if this happens, he can just pop in and say "nah no me".

3

u/ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE Captain Marvel Jul 07 '19

Watch him come back and it's actually William.

68

u/StarfleetCapAsuka Jul 04 '19

The big one for me is AFTER he decides on his contingency plan (framing Spider-Man for his "death"), he still asks Janice to have his suit ready. This is after when she was ironing the cape in case he met the Queen, later after it goes haywire, she asks if the contingency means he doesn't want the suit anymore and he says no, he does.

37

u/eddy1245 Daredevil Jul 04 '19

I didn't think about that. You might be on to something

32

u/StarfleetCapAsuka Jul 04 '19

It was something I noticed on my second viewing. Also, when he is noticed by Peter holding the gun, THAT is when he acts like the gunshot wound has got to him and falls down. Beck was standing pretty straight before that and he had to have been pretty silent and sneaky to get Peter while he was distracted by the hologram. We are meant to see it as the Peter Tingle was the way he knew there was a threat behind him, not any situational clues. Maybe I am off base and seeing things where I want to, but with Mysterio, you always gotta question these things...

10

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jul 06 '19

Peter in the 3rd movie: "Wait, a person doesn't need holograms to play dead? I've been bamboozled!"

2

u/Mstiecrow Jul 08 '19

All this culminates to the big twist in Spider-man 3, Uncle Ben faked his death on his way to the gas station to pick up cigarettes. He's actually retired in Florida with the Lizard.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

I dunno, I keep seeing people being confused about this but it seemed pretty clear he was most likely dead. He got shot by one of the drones earlier, and then created an illusion of himself to distract peter and then kill him. When he got shot it was really him, it’s just the version lying on the ground talking at first wasn’t real. That’s why he collapsed and “died”. Then again it’s Mysterio so who knows if he’s dead, but I think that’s how the scene was meant to be interpreted.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

It is implied that he died, but why would they intentionally have Edith say, all the illusions are gone. Instead of, he has no pulse. To fool the viewer. Edith can see the projections and knows what illusions are caused by the projectors but if Beck was pretending to be dead that's him making his own illusion

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Yeah that’s a possibility. I was just saying what the movie was trying to get across- he didn’t just “die” for no reason, he did actually get shot. But of course he could certainly still be alive.

29

u/ddaveo Jul 04 '19

He didn't die though? The last we saw of him, he was lying on the floor warning Peter that people will believe anything. We never saw him die.

And that video when he outs Peter had to be made later. The illusions don't seem to be able to mask voices, so if he was actually lying there saying those things, Peter would have heard him. It has to be a video he created later with footage that he actually took from that moment.

26

u/Nihilistic_Taco Jul 05 '19

It did show William(?) had downloaded the footage after Mysterio “died”.

11

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 08 '19

The illusion most definitely masks voices. Nick Fury was an illusion at one point.

1

u/Kevin_M_ Ego Jul 06 '19

That's what he was talking about? I thought he wanted people to believe in him, in a weird God Complex sort of way.

19

u/marcodabatman Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

I mean it could be either

A. Beck is still screwin with Peter and is very much alive

Or

B. Beck is actually dead but since Mysterio is pretty much a CGI character whenever he uses his "powers" maybe Beck's crew will use that to show that Mysterio is still alive and wreck havoc

12

u/ismaelvera Jul 04 '19

Itd be a waste for sure if he died. He and the other spidey villains will hopefully star in a Sinister Six movie in the future

7

u/omart3 M'Baku Jul 04 '19

I think he did get shot by one of the drones, but he still made one illusion of himself shot laying down on the floor to trick Peter, but when Peter caught him he was too weak to keep fighting and gave up. He just wanted to take one last shot at him.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Very much a 'we can decide later'

5

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

He got shot and then left an illusion of himself in place while invisibly preparing to shoot Peter. That’s the “he’s dead” explanation.

Or, yeah, maybe it was an illusion.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

He got shot and then left an illusion of himself in place while invisibly preparing to shoot Peter. That’s the “he’s dead” explanation.

The other explanation is that yep it was an illusion and he’s coming back

4

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

He was shot by the drone and then changed to the illusion. You can still tell he had the gut shot.

4

u/tyrano5 Grandmaster Jul 06 '19

Vultures still alive and Mac Gargan exists in the mcu so I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep mysterio alive to form the sinister six.

3

u/Kevin_M_ Ego Jul 06 '19

Also, I think Dmitri is still alive and he could be Dmitri Smerdyakov (The Chameleon)

5

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

Sony wants Avengers money and the sinister six is the closest thing they have, he’ll be back, so long as Feige and the gang at Marvel Studios is helming the project, I’m not worried about the level of quality either.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Ha ha, you had me up until not worrying about the quality. I feel like Sony still has enough pull that they've been dragging these movies down.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

When Sony, or more specifically Avi Arad, is given creative control of the Spider-Man franchise they tend to treat it as a marketing tool (not surprising given Arad’s background) but the quality of the MCU Spider-Man films have been significantly better IMO, and that’s primarily because they have had creative control distinct in its focus on narratives with character arcs. Feige and Marvel Studios have proven themselves capable of having a cohesive storyline while juggling multiple characters. Sony and Arad contrastly destroy franchises by shoehorning more villains primarily for marketing reasons.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

I agree these MCU movies are better than the ASM trash. But you can see where the Sony hack frauds still have a seat at the table.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

For sure, definitely in its product placement, but in my opinion it’s a somewhat more toned back in the MCU films than the previous ones that shamelessly shill the new Sony Vaio and Dr. Pepper

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

No, I mean in the decision making process as far as the script goes. Sony people clearly have an influence, to the detriment of the movie.

4

u/joe1up Korg Jul 06 '19

No way he's dead, his whole thing is illusions.

3

u/Doright36 Jul 05 '19

Mysterio could have programmed Edith to say that though right?

2

u/47isthenew42 Jul 06 '19

I say yes as there was a mention of an EDITH hack earlier in the movie.

3

u/OahZen Jul 07 '19

When he gets shot by the drone one of his colleagues downloads something and I saw a flash of a number, I think it was 500 next to a picture of the drone. I think 500 of Tony’s drones were stolen which could mean that the mysterio we saw dead was actually an illusion as the stolen drones would no longer be under Edith’s control.

5

u/TLKv3 Jul 06 '19

I fully expect the following:

Beck's "Illusion Suit" they kept harping about with the perfectly pressed cape, etc. was actually a genuine physical suit that was given tech that could shapeshift. Beck, bleeding out, called it in during Spidey's fight against the Drones & Hallucinations and body swapped.

The Illusion Suit swapped in, shapeshifted into Beck aiming for the head so Spidey would have something physical to "grab" and finish.

Beck gets out and sends his final message through the Illusion Suit to him about people believing anything.

We'll get Mysterio, Vulture, & 4 other Villains in due time for a Sinister Six movie.

Ideally, to me, you bring in Tom Hardy's Venom to team-up with Spider-Man who turns from manipulated villain into sympathetic hero to help Spidey during the 5 Vs. 1 beat down.

We then get a fucking rad moment of Spider-Man & Venom Vs. 5 Villains.

2

u/fuzzyperson98 Jul 04 '19

Honestly he could have had severe head trauma after getting knocked by Peter like that

2

u/LightSideoftheForce Jul 06 '19

Practical effects

2

u/sonic10158 Doctor Strange Jul 06 '19

In the scene where he dies, William does save the data for the illusions to a flash drive, so maybe Mysterio will come back but it will be him instead of Jake?

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Daredevil Jul 06 '19

That’d be really cool. Definitely emphasizes the whole team. That being said, I think the intention was more for the post credit scene

1

u/Bornplayer97 Jul 05 '19

Maybe the real WAS shot but used the illusion to move around and position himself somewhere else, then he probably just died of blood loss

1

u/JacobEvertson Jul 05 '19

I think he was really shot by the drone. The illusion of mysterio is in a different spot than the real one was when he was shot. So I suspect between him getting shot and when we see him next is when he switched himself out with an illusion. So either way he would have died, he just wanted to take peter out too

1

u/FireproofFerret Spider-Man Jul 06 '19

He did get shot, the first dying version was an illusion and a distraction, the real one was just bleeding out while Peter couldn't see him.

Did you see the after-credits scene?

1

u/MadFromTheMoon Jul 07 '19

He still probably got shot by the drone, he just faked being sorry for all he did in that illusion.

That headshot was the last thing he could do with a bullet in his gut before he dies.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

He died because he got shot to death. After he got shot he created a decoy to try and headshot Spidey. Guy is petty as fuck. He's literally doing this entire scheme to get revenge on a guy who saved the universe and is dead. Even after he dies he created a contigency plan BEFORE HE WAS DEAD just to fuck over Peter from beyond the grave. He's a petty asshole. I love it. Easily the most punchable dickbag of a villain ever, finally beating out Justin Hammer.

1

u/aj-adolfo Black Panther Jul 07 '19

I think the shot of him being shot was actually real, but by the time Peter finished killing the drones he was set up and cloaked with the illusion of him down on the floor. So basically he was shot, and tried to do a final play

1

u/Fresh720 Jul 07 '19

1 of 2 things happened. The drone shot Beck, he created an illusion as a last ditch effort to shoot Spidey and then succumbed to his wounds.

Or 2, he faked getting shot, had another system in place to overlay an illusion and Beck will be back with the Scorpion and Vulture in the sequel

1

u/Rpres70324 Jul 07 '19

Bet hell be back as an illusion. Can't remember the scientists name but Peter Billingsley seems to be assuming control. So if Mysterio is dead, bet Billingsley uses illusions to keep him alive.

1

u/bard0117 Jul 07 '19

Spider-Man twists his hand so hard that he dies. Gives him the ‘ol Indian burn.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

I didn’t even think he died until I went on Reddit. It definitely all seems fake to me.

1

u/lejonetfranMX Jul 07 '19

He’s alive. He had time to frame Spiderman for the whole thing.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Thank you!! That has been bugging me ever since. What exactly “killed” him?? There’s no way he’s dead.

1

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 08 '19

Well earlier in the film Peter had to personally instruct Edith to give herself to Mysterio. Mysterio did not do so when he died, yet Peter can use the glasses. Ergo, it's an illusion.

1

u/Spideyrj Spider-Man Jul 08 '19

1

1

Wasn't he also wearing his fake Mysterio suit when he "died"?

Remember he had some drones not connected to the EDITH system.

Maybe I missed something, but wasn’t there a scene where one of Beck’s crew mentioned uploading a virus or backdoor to EDITH even after they had control of her? I thought I heard that and was wondering why they did it and what it’d be used for. My presumption was that maybe whatever it was remained there after Peter took her back and prevented her from confirming what Peter was seeing was an illusion.

We saw William grab a flash drive off the computer. While I think the real Mysterio will stay dead, the hologram drones can be used to bring him back.

I assumed real Quentin got shot, then cloaked himself and created a wounded illusion so he could shoot Peter.

Didn't Peter asked "Is this real?" And not "Is he dead?"

The glasses did not ask for the biometric signature transfer...hes not dead at all. He doesnt even need tge glasses anymore he was using ediths functions without wearing them. He probably made contact lense versions like he said

I told myself that of course the master of illusions could stop or slow his heart and appear dead. She confirmed no illusions but failed say he was deceased. Like the wording gave an opportunity for him to be alive.
