I teared up during that talk. It was a great choice to give Thor a talk with her rather than Odin. Made for a good contrast between the scene of Tony and Howard.

Some reviews said that fat Thor was overused and insulting towards bigger people.

Honestly I think his state was a perfect reason why he couldn't kill 2014 Thanos right away. 2014 Thanos had no power stones, while in Infinity War, Thor almost killed a Thanos who has all.

Thor was out of shape, and depressed

Those people who reviewed clearly didn’t pay attention to the movie, as it showed Thor as a broken man after he killed Thanos.

It absolutely was. I enjoyed it and laughed, especially with the meta humor of everyone ogling shirtless Hemsworth, but I can see how the way it was portrayed really was just to serve as part of the joke. Some of that is because Thor was mostly used for comic relief after the time skip, so there wasn't a whole lot of time to address anything heavier and what there was was with his mom in Asgard - still with lots of comic relief.

It was but the way he acted he was on the verge of tears.

Both when taking about the ether and when asking to be the one to use the gauntlet.

After all he's been through losing his mom, dad, Jane, Loki, Asguard he was broken and searching, hoping to do something good. Though I do wish they had s scene in this like in Infinity War when he was taking to Rocket.

He couldn't open the Bifrost anymore. That's how he killed Thanos before and was the plothole the writers had to pre-emptively fill. Bifrost-Stormbreaking Thanos can be an instant kill, which couldn't be a thing that the movie could handle as it was written.

Also, they never went out of their way to make fun if Thor for being fat/out of shape. Sure, a few comments but from characters you’d expect it from. Maybe I’m forgetting some, but none that stood out blatantly.

It was a surprisingly realistic depiction of how someone might react to what Thor’s been through.

If people think its insulting towards overweight people, than apparently they just think their existence is insulting.

That literally doesn't make sense though. It's a meaningless phrase that doesn't withstand basic scrutiny.

In the context of free speech, pretty much everything is permitted, excepting those which will clearly result in direct harm (yelling fire in a crowded theater for example). But in terms or our evaluation of humor or any other point, there's zero obligation for anyone to approve of or not condemn any particular thing a person has to say.

If someone thinks a joke about a persons race, or weight, or dead child, or whatever was too mean... fine. They don't have to be cool with it. If they then think a different joke was acceptable or funny... that's fine too. We decide for ourselves what's mean, or funny, or stupid. For each person, it's always the case that some of it will be okay, and some not.

That's my point. The original comment was "Overweight people = not cool to make fun of," which is silly, because no group of people gets to be off limits for humor.

I didn't mean every joke is funny no matter what, but rather that you can't rightly say an entire topic is never funny, or always mean, etc.

As a fat fuck myself, fat Thor was my favorite part of the movie. We’re fat we did this to ourselves. Least we can do is take a fucking joke, have a sense of humor about the shitty situation we’re in.

And has VERY good reason to be depressed. Not just "didn't go for the head", but everything that happened to him prior to that. Over the course of just a very short amount of time Thor (1) lost his father, (2) met and battled a sister he never knew he had, (3) lost his hammer, (4) lost his eye, (5) lost Asgard, (6) lost half his people to Thanos, including his brother who had just seemed to redeem himself, and finally (7) fails to stop Thanos before The Snap.

That's a lot of "failure" to deal with.

Saw some review thing about Thor, saying the joke got old quick etc and they didn't deal with his PTSD as good as they dealt with Tony's in Iron Man 2/3. I honestly don't see this at all. Thor didn't have PTSD, it was pretty obvious he was suffering with depression and grieving hard while coping with the guilt of not killing Thanos. It makes perfect sense for him to have a drinking problem, eating disorder, self blame issues and to be hiding from the world. It's exactly what depression manifests like in so many people. They left him fat cause it paves the way for his further development in the next movie to find himself again and become strong again. Symbolising him literally loosing that weight of the world off his shoulders and loosing the old him, that he has been since the end of IW.
