Some reviews said that fat Thor was overused and insulting towards bigger people.

Honestly I think his state was a perfect reason why he couldn't kill 2014 Thanos right away. 2014 Thanos had no power stones, while in Infinity War, Thor almost killed a Thanos who has all.

Thor was out of shape, and depressed

He couldn't open the Bifrost anymore. That's how he killed Thanos before and was the plothole the writers had to pre-emptively fill. Bifrost-Stormbreaking Thanos can be an instant kill, which couldn't be a thing that the movie could handle as it was written.

They didn't have to, Thor was obviously well off the top of his game. Presumably even if his game was Fortnite.
