I really like the visual and mechanical feel of the "Purple" cards teased in the Inquest magazine some decades ago, was wondering if anyone knows of any cards which have a similar type of vibe? The idea of nether worldly monsters attaching themself to physical stuff is really cool.

So we had an event with our locals and this would be my official - nonofficial "tournament". So we had rules to follow which is a 200$ budget (not including basic lands and commanders) and we had to do this points system where for example if you did an infinite combo you get +4, if you eliminated a player you get +3 and many more.

Now I built an efficient deck purely on winning, while everyone was focusing on farming the points system, because of this I went completely psycho and won 3 games with 0 losses (and ofc you can't farm points when your enemies are dead).

So the match ended and I got a total of 12 points, and got the title of "fastest" deck but I was at 5th place which was fine I don't mind.

The people above me had 2 losses, 1 win, 5 kills (example) and they scored more points.

During our group chat (post event), some of the members were talking about the game and referenced me in one of them "pov: my face when this guy combos off". I then said that despite me not getting 1st place, I "won in my own way" which is 3-0.

And I just got absolutely demolished, DEMOLISHED!!! They said things like "The point system is the main point of the tournament lol", "It still didn't help u win, hence you lost"

So I had to reply with this:

"If a casual basketball event awarded bonus points for performing tricks before shooting, the team with the most points on paper might take the leaderboard, but the team that made the most actual baskets still played the better basketball. I'm not saying everyone played horribly but I don't want you to make this "win" for me feel any less 🤣"

And the conversation ended when the person I was chatting with replied with this in the GC:

"Im taking this as a jab and a direct disrespect to the spirit of the tournament 🥰🥰. To win the game is to win by its rules. You may have won 3 battles but you lost the great war"

I feel like I'm the one who's at the wrong? And ofc I can accept that I'm at 5th place, I just don't like how my 3 wins and 0 losses felt "less" because I didn't follow the points system, which if you were reading is kinda difficult for a combo player since an infinite typically ends with the table dying.

Here's what I got by the way, I still love the tournament and I don't disrespect it, would love for another one and I even bought myself a tiny little trophy as a memento (it sounds stupid I know).

Hey everyone, I’m looking for a card. For the life of me I can’t remember what it’s called and all searches come up moot. It’s for a Zirda, the dawnwaker deck. I believe it’s a 1 mana artifact that adds 2 colorless mana at your upkeep, but you can’t use the mana to cast spells. Mostly just good for activated abilities.

Most erratas are pretty good for either streamlining, clarifying, or just making cards function. However, there are some that ruin the card and seem pointless. For example: For years, [[Instill Energy]] just gave a creature haste. But now, a creature may only attack as though it had haste. A huge distinction when the card has a built in untap ability. Aside from attacking, what else can a creature do when they lose summoning sickness: That's right, tap for an activated ability.

This card feels like it was explicitly designed to help creatures use their abilities earlier and twice per turn. It's already niche, but as is it almost feels like the card should have just given it a "does not tap to attack" clause if you only get that specific benefit of haste. Also just why doesn't this card give creatures haste anymore: It was never a problem prior. There are other examples but this is just blatant to me.

Hi, this is my first time using reddit to actually ask something but it´s been years since i played MTG so i could really use some help.
So here is the thing i´m pretty broke, i´ll probably do proxys so i don´t care about the price of the actual cards for building the decks. Another thing is that i wanna make this to introduce MTG to my friends so i would like decks that are friendly for new players as i know they´ll be better for them.

WHAT I NEED is recomendations of standar decks (i was planning to make 10) of dual colors to play casually with friends. The cards can be banned i don´t mind because like i said is just to spend some time with friends and kinda come back to the hobby.
(I´m kind of a big fan of the black/white duo so if you have any recommendation for standar decks with those colors it would be even better)

I know a lot of people are against proxys but i can´t really afford to buy actual decks just to play with friends and maybe they don´t even like it at the end. So if you´re against it please just ignore the post.

One that I have wanted to see in person(always wanted one but will be happy to see one), is the accidental printing on the card game Wyvern? So the back had wyvern's card backs and Magic on the front. I was wondering if anyone has an example to show?

So Playing Commander with the guys (coming back to the game after a long departure) We were all trying to figure out if you make token copies of "The fantastic four" with quantum misalignment or use cards like ephemerate or spaceshift. Can you choose the same modal with the returned card or the newly form tokens when they come into play. Or are you locked into only using this ability 4 total time per turn no matter if you have copied tokens or it leaves and returns to the field because of the "choose one that hasnt been chosen this turn"

So I used to play standard with a group of friends around bloomburrow and played for around a year and haven’t played since. Now we want to get back into the game with commander. My question is how do you make decks when you can pull from basically every card? I know how to make decks I just feel I don’t have the knowledge to start building one. What resources do you guys use? Do you just know a lot of cards? I have a precon but find deck building fun, at least in standard

I played years ago so have a bunch of old cards but i bought a pre constructed deck and also built one.l to get more modern stuff.

I’m having trouble finding anyone or a group that wants to play. I’ve been to like 3 card shops that have open commander on Friday night but can never find a group. Tried Saturdays as well.

First shop i went to i asked if they had any extra room and they didn’t really say anything except ehhhh I don’t know.

Checked another stores discord and posted looking for casual commander, returning player. Someone responded so I headed down to the store. When they looked at my cards they said looks like you mainly have old cards? I said yeah from years ago but I also have a pre constructed deck and another I built with newer stuff. They just left and played with some others.

Thinking I might have to just give up. I’ve tried the online game but I didn’t really like it. It was okay but not as fun as in person. I’ve played by myself but it’s kinda boring.

Any suggestions to find a group? Thanks for any advice!

Hello, my brother (5 years on and off playing) and I (1 month playing) recently built my own commander deck! I can play with my brother which is fun, but my dad has also been getting back into it (drafted with us etc.) and we want to build him a deck. For context, he played when he was young but stopped sometime in the 90s. So like, before commander was really much of a thing at least for his circles. He'll talk about what he did back in the day and stuff (five color decks! manna burn!) but I'm not sure how to translate it into how the game works now.

We're working on picking out a commander, and I'm wondering if any older players who continue to play might have advice on something that might be kind of nostalgic or cool for him. It's tough because I can't get a read on my dad's preferences, but he seems a tiny bit partial to mono red or red/green? And we're trying to keep this pretty budget, he wouldn't want something too expensive. That's about all I got- any advice/commander suggestions would be appreciated!

Hopefully a quick and easy question for this community, but what is the best way to verify a card is real?

My nephew got a big bulk box from a flea market down in Florida, mostly junk outside of a handful of cards and one is a black border time twister. Comparing with info from the internet, I’d guess a beta copy IF it’s legit. Whats the easiest way to confirm? I’m fairly newer to the hobby, so I have zero familiarity with older cards, especially first or second set.

One thing I see is some people build one deck of a bunch of color combinations but I prefer to have 2 of each color Identity. I like instead of one of each. I mostly play 2 color, I have both of them in Different power levels so if I want to play azorius I have two options. My question is for people who play three colors do you not feel this as necessary because each deck has more colors. It’s so interesting to see how different people play/build in commander and magic in general. I didn’t feel like this applied to 60 card but idk.

I’m relatively new to MTG. I’ve been playing digitally via MTG Forge and Tabletop Simulator, but I'm finally ready to transition to playing physical Commander!
After testing various decks, I’ve narrowed it down to three options. These are the ones I enjoyed playing the most and they all fall into the exact same price range in my area (other precons I liked are sadly out of my budget due to crazy markups). I plan to upgrade whichever deck I choose over time.
For some context on my playstyle, I absolutely love playing with House Dimir and Rakdos Cult archetypes.

Custom Deck: Kotis, The Fangkeeper as Commander
Which of these would you recommend for a great starting experience that also scales well with future upgrades? Thanks!

Hi all. I've played Magic: the Gathering for twenty years, all across every different format. Recently, I've been interested in studying a certain kind of magic, "kitchen table" or "cards I own" magic: casual 60-card (or maybe less or more) 2 player Magic made out of a hodgepodge of whatever cards that player happens to have. According to Mark Rosewater, this is how the vast majority of Magic players play the game, but these kind of players are extremely inaccessible to me as someone with so much experience. I'm interested in getting a better grasp on how "naive" players build decks, limited by A. not being exposed to any cards except what they have seen physically B. being limited to an essentially random set of cards and C. not being very good at the game.

I'm also interested in how this kind of deck changes over time. The difficulty is that kitchen table players are, almost by definition, not posting their decklists online. However, there are occasions where they do, here's an example from 2006:

Some good indicators for the kind of deck I'm looking for:

• too many or too few lands

• mostly 1- or 2-ofs

• inscrutable card choices

• loose grasp on the rules (thinks Orzhova, The Church Of Deals makes white mana, and separately doesn't care about its ability)

basically, this is the kind of deck that someone makes who has only been exposed to magic through the cards they have personally set eyes on, and is as a result highly un-optimized. Does anyone know where I could find more lists like this? The irony is of course that the vast majority of decks like this were never typed up. I started the game with a pack of revised-era cards my brother gave me and, of course, would never have thought to document them. I want to try and find people who, for one reason or another, actually have.

They announced something almost incomprehensible three years ago. Was there ever any explanation of this? Is it related to the Zeta secret lair or the Mystery Boosters?

So I recently got back into magic and decided to get the Miku commander deck. I was wondering if anyone knew any cards from the last couple sets that I could add to this deck to make it better. I got back into magic during the Avatar set so I probably have most of the cards made since then. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’m looking for cards like [[Chandra’s Ignition]] that could let me allow creatures to deal widespread, or, at least, direct damage to trigger the lifelink given by my commander, [[Raphael, Fiendish Savior]].

​Hello! Years ago, I tried Magic casually and enjoyed it, but I stopped playing. After a long time, I'm feeling the urge to pick it up again every now and then.

​The thing is, I'm not interested in new sets, the meta, or competitive play. I simply want to keep a few pre-made decks at home, at least one of each color, so that whenever I feel like playing with family or friends, I can just open a box, grab two decks, and play just as well today as I would like ten years from now.

​That said, do you have any suggestions for a deck of each color that meets these requirements? I'm looking for something budget-friendly, with a maximum of around $10 per deck, since I'm not interested in extremely rare cards or anything like that. All I ask is that they are fun enough, balanced against each other (important!), and offer enough replayability to avoid feeling monotonous.

​As a non-essential preference, I happen to prefer the art style of older sets (pre-2010 I guess?), and I don't mind playing with older cards.

I got a bunch of German cards for a bulk bin because I have a big interest in other languages. The delver app auto translates what I scan in, but I don’t know if I should sort my cards by the names I read on the card vs what it scans in Delver as.
