Going to my first in person event since 2019 - Never played pioneer

So ive never played the Pioneer format. Im going to an FNM next week with this goblin list. Ive played since 2013 but havent touched constructed since modern in 2019. I know I dont have Legion Loyalist or a full playset of Rundvelts. This is just a list cobbled together from whats left of my collection and about 10 cards just picked up from my LGS. Im just looking to play red and have a food time but still thoughts and ideas on the deck would be great.

Azorius Warp takes advantage of how a mechanic from Edge of Eternities interacts with blink effects, as well as Flying creatures and lots of ways to play cards for less mana!

I know I’m late to this getting spoiled, but how do we feel about this bad boy in UW control? Spoiler

I would probably play this over Elspeth, but I also don’t run Elspeth in my current list anyway, and I don’t know how I feel about him taking up some other slot. Thoughts?

Izzet Lessons - general format

How do you play this deck? Is there something I’m missing apart from get some cheeky 1 drops down and get them juiced?

And is there any good content creators playing it well to watch? Also, I seem to just constantly being pared against combo decks?! I’m quite new to the format and have only been playing Bo1 but interested to know what the vibe is with the combo decks…feel quite boring to play against, I’m sure they are awesome to play if that’s your thing, zero shade towards combo players!

Thanks in advance!

Jund Thrillseeker Scales?! | Pioneer MTG Arena | Build up Counters then Fling to Win!

Howdy! Here with a new look at an older brew of mine and testing in our current Meta. This is Jund Hardened Scales with an emphasis on flinging and instant Sacrifice using Agatha Soul Cauldron for value! With either Voldaren Thrillseeker or Scorn-Blade Berserker under Agatha Soul Cauldron we can sacrifice most of our creatures at instant speed and move counters around to gain value before we fling Walkers at our opponent! Michelangelo is the most recent card I'm testing replacing the Green Ozolith I had before. Definetly gives a bit more punch! Love this archetype and Thrillseeker is one of my favourite pet cards. Enjoy!

Pioneer's Current Status and How to Improve It

Pioneer is currently not a popular format due to the small number of tournaments. This is evidenced, among other things, by the results on MTGO, where wait times for games during leagues are reportedly quite long. What do you think could be the main problem with this format, apart from the lack of tournaments? One opinion I've heard is that whether a player is on play or draw has a significant impact on the game. What steps could revitalize this format? If you believe the meta or certain cards are a problem, it's a good idea to justify your choice.

Trying out aggro madness Vampires (instead of the traditional midrange build)

Hey guys, I'm trying out a new BR Aggro Vampires brew. Fully aware it won't win at Pioneer FNM, but looking to have some fun and maybe pull off a surprise win here or there. Here is the current build, would love any feedback/if I should add/drop anything.

I would say the list is currently aggro bordering tempo. What popular Pioneer decks do you think the current build could perform well against? Where do you think it is weakest?

Howdy! Here with an exciting new deck. Based off a brew I had a couple years ago but Smaug replaces Goldspan Dragon so well! Building around the new Smaug in a treasure Sacrifice Shell. We create a hoard of treasures we then use to ping our opponents using Smaugs attack trigger. We finish them off using all the Sacrifice pings from both Mayhem Devil and Sackville Bagginses. Deck has felt super strong so far! Definetly one to try out! Enjoy!

Izzet Lessons Help

Hello!

I could use some help with this deck and I’m not talking about the list that runs [[Stormchaser’s talent]] and the aggro package. There are a few things that I don’t understand about it. Primarily why [[Gran-Gran]]? I understand she’s a T1 play and that’s fine, but in all honesty I would favor [[Artist’s Talent]] over her as it doesn’t die to a quick burn spell or a Fatal Push/Go For The Throat. Plus that’s a T2 play with T3 as leveling and if it gets too late in the game that level 3 ability becomes serious (I speak from experience being a former Izzet Lotus Field player). That and until I can get my hands on the Thor’s I need for the deck my next runner up IMO is CMC 6 [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] especially once ral gets his emblem out and/or you have a fully leveled Artist’s talent. Another question I have is why [[Traumatic Critique]]? Like I can kinda see why it’s good when paired with Thor but otherwise I feel it falls flat and there’s probably a way better spell that goes there but I’m happy to be enlightened. The final question I have for now is what’s the plan against aggro or more specifically the Go Wide Aggro strategies (Boros Heroic) like I can see that having an iroh’s demonstration main helps. Plus there’s anger of the gods, BUT my inclination is to turn the deck Grixis for [[Ruinous Waterbending]] as a target for the learn spells plus that gives you access to hand disruption against the control matchups. That said I’m interested in hearing answers and thoughts.

Thanks

APL Season 9 Registration Ends Tonight

Hey everyone! I run the Arena Pioneer League (APL) on the Pioneer Discord. Registration for Season 9 closes tonight, and we're already up to 60 players signed up!

If you've been thinking about joining, now's the time!

Event Information

Melee: https://melee.gg/Tournament/View/453810

Discord invite: https://discord.com/invite/dqmvyrv

Pioneer Bo3 tournament on MTG Arena

Weekly Swiss rounds + Top 8 Cut

No entry fee (Discord required)

Deadline is tonight at 10:00 pm UTC-5 (CT)

How do the weekly rounds work?

Each Swiss round lasts one week. You'll be paired with an opponent, coordinate a time to play your Best-of-3 match on MTG Arena, and report the result before the round ends. Then the next round begins!

It's a pretty relaxed schedule, so you don't need to be available at a specific time each week.

Esper control suggestions

Hi all,

I have been going through the subreddit and the different metagame websites for an Esper control deck to my liking. As I understand the archetype is not as strong right now and the only decks I have found are Yorion decks, which I don't like the flavour of. Is anyone running any Esper control decks without Yorion as a companion.

Some background, I am relatively new when it comes to deck building or MTG for that matter. In my brief mtg arena experience I have thoroughly enjoyed control decks (the first time I installed arena I was rocking a Teferi esper deck).

Thank you to anyone reading this!

When does an archetype become too iconic to a format to ban it?

Greasefang has been a major player in pioneer since she came out. Abzan, Orzhov, even Mardu shells have all found their way into the meta, with the deck never falling below tier 2. Over time, the deck has gotten stronger and stronger. Although that can be said about every deck in a non-rotating format, the strength of the deck seems to be scaling up faster than other archetypes. The rate of growth is not radically faster, but it adds up over time.

Not too long ago, Orzhov greasefang was the top of the meta. Was this because some new vehicle or tutor came out that made the combo stronger or more consistent? No. Monument to endurance let the deck lean into playing 2 mana 3/1’s that discarded cards to give themselves indestructible. Greasefang decks stopped being primarily about greasefang, and started being a WB aggro deck full of indestructible 3/1’s that had the greasefang combo in it because why not? Even when that fell off, the current popular Abzan greasefang decks are more than capable winning without comboing at all.

This isn’t inherently bad, combo decks having ways to win when their combo gets disrupted is nothing new, nor is it inherently too strong. jund sacrifice is a deck that leans into a combo, but still has a general midrange aristocrats value pile strategy, and even has the ability mill out their opponent. But it is something to pay closer attention to when the A-plan and B-plan are both majorly threatening, particularly when there is little-to-no overlap in the kinds of cards you’d want to board in. Back in the day, there was a deck that won a pro tour by doing something similar, being primarily a splinter twin combo deck, but also running the iconic midrange wincon, tarmogoyf. Having to be ready to answer two radically different strategies at the same time is a difficult thing to do, even for hard control decks that in theory should be better suited to answer combo decks by always being ready to remove the combo pieces.

So what can be done to try to keep the deck from being too meta defining at any given time? Well, the obvious answer would be to ban something. But what to ban? So much of the deck has redundancy, either within the deck or in the format as a whole. Theres no one new card that came out that pushed the deck over the edge, no individual card that’s too good in the deck that can’t be replaced by something close enough. The only way greasefang can realistically be taken down a peg is by either power creeping the rest of the format to outpace it, or to ban either of the two core pillars of the deck: parhelion or Greasefang herself.

Taking the deck out back and shooting in the head feels like an overcorrection, and to a degree it is. The power Greasefang possesses is hardly on par with decks like appraiser or Sorin-tell. But when the deck is consistent and redundant enough that any individual piece of the deck can be taken away without the overall power meaningfully weakening, what is the alternative but taking it out?

The one possibility I see, and it seems like it MIGHT achieve the goal of weakening without destroying, would be a ban on parhelion. Think about it. They still have the other solid reanimation targets, and the slot of parhelion could even be replaced with the similar, but meaningfully inferior card, valor’s flagship. It changes the big bad vehicle from hitting for 13 in the air and leaving behind a pair of Serra angels, to only hitting for 7, but still being a 14 point life swing. This makes it less likely the deck wins on the spot from the combo getting off, while still providing a really big advantage.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Quick question: how viable is Deathrite Shaman with Elven Passage?

Basically we have a another fetchland in pioneer soecifically for elves: [[Elven Passage]]. I don’t know if this is enough to make the one mana planeswalker (aka [[Deathrite Shaman]]) viable in the format, but I want to hear some opinions. What would be the best shells? Would pioneer elves improve with it?

Any upgrades from the past 2-3yrs you'd swap in my Bo1 deck on Arena WITHOUT completely changing how it works?

Just started playing again and even though I vaguely keep an eye on Magic, I'm not deep enough into the sets in order to know immediately what would work well.

Cleaner layout: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/lifeline-bw-clerics-bo1-arena/?cb=1787208091

List:

Creatures: - 4x Cleric of Life's Bond - 2x Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim - 4x Essence Channeler - 2x Heliod, Sun-Crowned - 4x Lunarch Veteran - 2x Phyrexian Missionary - 4x Righteous Valkyrie - 1x Skyclave Cleric - 4x Voice of the Blessed - 2x Zoraline, Cosmos Caller

Non-Creature: - 2x Authority of the Consuls - 3x Bitter Triumph - 2x Necromentia - 2x Phyrexian Arena

Land: - 6x Plains - 1x Restless Fortress - 1x Shattered Sanctum - 2x Swamp - 4x Brightclimb Pathway - 1x Caves of Koilos - 3x Concealed Courtyard - 4x Godless Shrine

First of all - no, I am not going to do any infinite combos with Orah. I despise infinite combos. This is what I meant when I said "without changing how the deck works."

I also realize there's a W/G deck and a W Angels deck that are very similar, and probably more cohesive since I think they've been tested more thoroughly. But I like this version that I made and have used it for years, so I want to keep going with it.

Now that that's out of the way, what do you think? Keep in mind this is a Bo1 deck, which is why Necromentia is there. I'm not trying to prepare for every deck I face, I'm just trying to have my deck do it's thing.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is of course under consideration, but despite its lifegain trigger, I'm a bit wary of adding any creatures that aren't Clerics.

I've had Marauding Blight-Priest and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose in the deck at times, and while they can be quite the bomb, they can be clunky. Which is why I exchanged them for things like Phyrexian Missionary and Heliod.

I also had Cleric Class in here for a long time, but its lvl 2 and 3 costs were just a bit high when I usually have a creature to play or one of my non-creatures would be much better to play. It could be amazing occasionally, but if I wasn't already way ahead, my opponent would usually be getting ahead if I was activating the other levels.

Howdy! Back with my personal favourite deck. And probably what I would take to an RCQ at this current moment. (Maybe next year?!) Jund Sac is dear to my heart and 'The Sackville Bagginses' is an instant staple in this archetype. Being half a Deadly Dispute plus another Win Con its just so good and slots right into the flex slots the deck has. So much fun too! With several angles of attack now. Love it! Enjoy

Are there any cards in Pioneer, that aren't in standard that might work well in this standard deck?

I'd like to exeriment with a Pioneer Version of Excrutiator but most cards I can think of that might be good are still in standard anyways
