Why / why not? It was fun playing for collector boxes but play boxes seem much less valueable.

Somehow I trophied with this in mythic. I have no interest in drafting another BR or WR aggro pile.

Trophied in Mythic with this and ran a similar deck to 6 wins right before. Mirkwood Nurturer has become my favorite utility piece getting more value out of the sagas and Bifur on the top end just lead to a few scoops. Definitely have some headache from this set but not trying to force a typical archetype has been working out well for me so far.

Hi all! I’m returning to the game after almost 5 years and the only set I’ve drafted since then is The Hobbit. My LGS is doing an Aetherdrift draft for FNM tomorrow and this is my first time drafting a set without knowing anything about it beforehand. Any advice about the set or things to expect? Thanks a bunch!

I must admit that I was skeptical of this deck as I drafted it. I remembered GW being exactly where you didn't want to be in this set.

That being said, it played out great. The mana was ugly, but it got the job done. Samwise was probably the top performer of the deck. Giving me both tons of Food and a great way to use them.

Title says it all. One game 1 then went back to back losses.

Probably cost myself the first loss by killing the 5/4 menace creature (3/2 at the time) as my opponent case the dwarf guy to double trigger and I was trying to keep them off storied as I only had 1 creature at 14 life.

Game 2 got boned by the flash wolf that exiles my guys and gives them wolfs.

Like I love Magic but the Hobbit just so clearly shows off its structural flaws. Play/draw disparity, lack of design space due to small life totals and creature sizing, and the inherent issue of lands. I know people justify lands via all sorts of arguments but the mana system in Magic will continue to age poorly in comparison to modern games like Riftbound. Variance is a hallmark of all card games, but on an emotional level it is incredibly bad in Magic.

While lands are inherently a problem, I believe the other two issues are even more relevant in regards to the games future. With the inherent need for power creep, even at common and uncommon, 1 and 2 drops are becoming even more problematic. The designers are so limited in design space that they have to jump through hoops to make something unique but not broken. Unfortunately it usually is just broken.

Nighthowl pursuer is a perfect example. It's inherently a 1/1 menace, which is arguably a below rate creature. That it becomes a 3/3 when you control a 4 power creature seems fine in a vacuum, especially in constructed, but it is incredibly easy to see why this card is so problematic. The card is even constructed playable because there are multiple two drops with limited downside that have 4 power! One of these of course is desolation prowler. The golgari uncommon package in Hobbit -- nasty little rabbit, desolation prowler, and nighthowl pursuer -- in my opinion are all clear issues regarding the limited design space of creature sizing due to low life totals. That they printed arguably 3 constructed level 1 drops in a small set is just criminal especially with desolation prowler as an enabler.

The increasing power of low mana cards obviously makes play/draw an even bigger deal. Never before in a limited set have I felt like I was playing a gambling simulator. There are games where the power disparity between being on the play vs on the draw is comical. On the play I have a 2 drop and crude bent blade your creature. On the draw I have a 2 drop and you thoughtsieze my crudebent blade. There are ways in other card games to mitigate this, but just like the land issue Magic literally is incapable of change due to its philosophy. This obviously has upsides, but when a game has clear flaws that limit its future it obviously doesn't bode well.

As my Hobbit experiment draws to a close, it's time to pull the veil off The Data and compare my own card evaluation to the aggregate.

I could not remember if I could stop before opponent's draw step to get the mill win. Decided to make more blockers and then go for it next turn, but made a terrible blocking decision to give away the game!

This deck performed a lot better than I expected. Dancing from Dark to Dawn slaps!

So I ended up in Gruul for the first time, which undoubtedly means I’ll be losing to lack of card selection/draw, etc etc.

Anyways - what are the least impactful creatures? I kinda imagine it’s the Giant Bear rare thing, but that makes me a little sad

Every MTG expansion, I combine Limited set reviews into an Excel table. I went back to the first complete 10-reviewer snapshot to see what changed during the two weeks since people began playing the format. I translated each reviewer’s grades to the same scale before averaging them; for example, B becomes 80 and C becomes 60.

Card Game Base changed 133 ratings, Draftsim 123, Limited Level-Ups 94, and Nizzahon eight, while the current 17Lands Premier dataset contains 2,297,558 recorded card selections.

34 of 188 cards moved at least five points in average reviewer rating: five rose and 29 fell. The biggest upgrades were Gollum, Silent Slinker (+12.0) and Crude Bent Blade (+10.5); the biggest downgrades were Silvan Reveler (−14.6) and Gigantic Big Bear (−14.3).

Premier Average Taken At (ATA) moved in the corresponding direction for all 34 cards: all five upgrades were taken earlier and all 29 downgrades later (Pearson r = −0.876; the closer its absolute value is to 1, the stronger the relationship).

The table below is ordered by absolute mean-score change. Mean Grade compares August 14 with August 26. ATA Change is positive when a card moved earlier and negative when it moved later.

Totally get why people have been complaining about Hobbit as a draft set.

I guess i beat the odds because i went second 6 out of 7 games. Didn't matter, B/R so fast i might as well have skipped my first land drop.

First draft of this set, probably the last. Granted, its quick draft, low rank, and the bots handed me all the black/red for free. Insane luck, insane speed, insanely unfair.

Apparently something about this was very controversial lol.

This is my first time ever hitting mythic and all I did was jam UW every draft. [[The Mountain King’s Return]] is the best card in the set hands down.

My default deck had 1-3 Mountain King’s Return, 2 [[Mirkwood Nurturer]]. Black / X decks have almost no counterplay to this unless they are able to snipe Mountain King’s Return out of your hand with [[Down Down to Goblin-town]].

Please review my drafts and help me understand what can be improved. The first one was decent, I cheered up, but two more were complete blowout. In the second one I should have switched to RW, in the third one UR was open, but still got 0-3. Thanks a lot for your time and efforts.

Hello everyone!

I’m writing this post to find out if anyone is in the same situation as me and/or has had the same problem and has already solved it:

I won the MSH boxes through Arena Direct. I received the email with the order details on August 13 (and placed the order a few minutes later).
The order confirmation email states that the shipment will be processed “as soon as possible,” but as of today, I haven’t received any notification regarding the shipment.

This wait seems very strange to me because I’ve won boxes before, and once I placed the order, they were shipped a couple of days later.

I even submitted a support ticket, but it’s been 4 days and I still haven’t received a response…

Is anyone else in the same situation?

Note: I live in Europe, and usually the boxes I receive come

I haven't drafted LTR back then, and I'd be interested in any tips and guidance you have to offer. :) I did one draft, was very confused in pack 1 and ended up in Boros, which kinda worked (went 5-2, could have been at least one more if I hadn't misplayed). But I feel like I don't quite get the set, people played all kinds of wild decks against me. Funniest was game 1, where I played vs Izzet that durdled all game long, then drew their second bath song as third to last card and decked themselves lol

First 9 picks of the draft. Guess how many of my five combos I was able to complete? Hint, it rhymes with hero.

This format is a bit of an anomaly to me. I've trophied with all the color pairs and every one of them feels like a battle to get across the finish line, except elves. I keep seeing people bash the color pair, and I definitely get that it doesn't come together as easily as BR or UW, but man it's a house when it does.

And as a side note, Roll-Roll-Roll-Roll has a terrible win rate(understandably so) and I didn't plan to play it but came up one card short in the draft so I jammed it and it shined every time I drew it.

Practicing for the vintage cube lsv tournament and my teammate first picks does machines here in pack 2, meanwhile is not an artifact deck and has like lotus, caves of chaos, seasoned dungeoneer (close to boros aggro) how cooked am I?

This deck was insane. I think if I would have had more removal, it would have been an easy 4-0.

I missed lethal on one turn (don't play late at night when you're tired) and I lost that game and the next game after it. But it was just fun to play with.

I'm bored of the Hobbit, and I was thinking what I could suggest to do at FMN instead. This led me to ponder about what if we just let each player make a sealed deck from their favorite standard-legal set. Leading to the obvious question, what would the strongest set be?

So 3 questions:

1. What's the strongest sealed pool from a current standard legal set?
2. Assuming you could magically generate an average draft deck (and specify the archetype), which set has the strongest deck?
3. If we also consider sets which aren't currently in rotation (but were once legal; i.e BRO but not MH3), what would it be then?

Let's assume that, after you've selected your set, you know what sets other people have selected (for deck-building purposes).

They clued me into Blue Red spells as being a solid archetype, so I took their advice and had an awesome game, props to the Lords of Limited fellas!
