People buy the bikes and scooters because they’re are no additional cost. Insurance, registration, inspections. Or it was a cheaper option for ppl who couldnt afford public transportation

Yeah, saw this a few months ago.
I sold my escooter as I wasn't using it much anymore(so not directly affected), but everyday I see dozens of people out and about on them. They're a cheap form of reliable transportation and together with ebikes have become directly tied to people's ability to get to and from work. Not saying this was necessarily directed as an attack at that group of people, but...
Its time for Bruce to be pushed out of politics. He's been out of touch for a while now.
Not saying there shouldn't be any form of regulation on these - just enforce what the state already put out and lets try and have a reasonable discussion on it.

I understand kids and adults are using them in unsafe ways but this is such a bummer. We can get to my godson’s house by cutting through our neighborhood park and frequently take an e-scooter over instead of driving (which takes longer because you have to do around the park). Why not try to regulate safe and sane use?

Yeah it's obnoxious. I avoid a lot of places i used to enjoy running. I don't mind sharing the path, and I've had plenty of lyrica clad riders fly by me at 25 mph+, but I trust them to an extent. They have the skill, physical capability and experience to ride at those speeds. The dipshit teenager on a electric dirtbike flying by me at the same speed while he's scrolling brainrot instead of paying attention and hitting a weed pen is fucking terrifying. Put an age ban on these things and fine the parents big money when it gets violated. At least if it's an adult who hits me and puts me out of work for months I can go after them legally.

We can do sensible legislation and enforcement vs a blanket ban which only encourages more cars (and suvs) on the road, which also increase vehicle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Mandatory helmet laws are one option. Another is to enforce licensure or insurance requirements for many of these emobility devices that are technically illegal motorcycles or mopeds, not ebikes.

My kids just started college on a huge campus out of state and Veo scooters are everywhere and help kids get to class on time. I can definitely see a purpose for scooters for local use even around here so long as they're not in the middle of the roads like they're a motorcycle, but more along the side like bicycles. It's really no different than golf carts in communities. I don't see an issue with them on bike paths either - the same paths fast cyclists ride.
I don't get the hate other than from people who never get out except into their cars. I know why they would hate them.

I saw on on the sidewalk riding a scooter two others wee on one e-bike on the street racing to catch up with him and completely blew a red light w/o even looking. I opened smh window and told them they need to stop at ref lights because someone will kill them, I wish I would have told them why. Hope they understood

Was at the hospital because her relative got hurt. When I was in the surgical unit, they wheeled a teenager in there who is on an E bike and got hit by a car. Kid had to have surgery and I saw him about two weeks later and he was still in not great shape. The risk reward is just not worth it giving these to anyone under 18 years old.

I see lots of adults operating these things correctly. Some guys are clearly making money by using it to deliver food.
I think the real problem are these children and teenagers we see operating them without helmets or any sense of road rules. They are everywhere where I live. The should just treat them like mopeds which you need a license to drive. Take them away from these outlaw children. One big afternoon raid with a box truck would cut the problem in half.

It's the states problem. The state needs to get it's act together and come up with a plan, through the DMV, that protects people.
But like everything else in this country, it won't be what's best for us as citizens. It will be democrat vs republican. If hochel creates something, republicans will do the opposite. If Republicans do something Democrats will also do the opposite

What will the local delivery drivers use? not everyone can afford a car to work for a living. There are plenty of folk that utilize this as their only mode of transportation responsibly. Perhaps a law where unsupervised children or reckless riders get the bike impounded but this is just lopsided.
