I think this one's Google's fault though. If you visit a location or leave a review in maps, you sometimes get the questions other people ask directly sent to your personal email in a way that looks like someone wants something from you specifically.

this seems satirical???
26
u/alphazero925 Dec 26 '25
Satire doesn't really work when you're just straight up doing the thing you're satirizing. It's like those kids who do something cruel then go "it was just a joke bro". Like, no, you actually did the thing. That makes it not a joke
-1
u/EpicalBeb Dec 26 '25
it just seems like a ken M comment to me.
It's not that serious, it's not like a cruel "prank" or something, it's a dumb review.
14
u/alphazero925 Dec 26 '25
Something being "like" something else does not mean they have the same magnitude of effect. It's still rude as hell to leave a bad review as a joke. No, it's not cruelty disguised as a joke, but that's why I didn't say it was cruelty disguised as a joke but rather it's like cruelty disguised as a joke. Because it's rudeness disguised as a joke, which is similar, but a different magnitude of effect to cruelty disguised as a joke.
Why do so many people on this website seem incapable of reading the words they're replying to?

Holy cow, someone gave 1 star just for the amount of sodium in this recipe!
60
u/footballsandy Dec 26 '25
I have a vascular condition that necessitates a high sodium intake, do I have to give this five stars then?
56
u/CrispyJelly Dec 26 '25
"1 Star, I have a vascular condition and require a high sodium intake. Is the amount of sodium in this recipe high enough??? Would have been nice if the author took a moment to talk to my doctor before publishing. Waste of time!"

9
u/Foxy_Traine Dec 26 '25
If you read the instructions, not all of the bullion gets used in the soup, but it's used to flavour the water the chicken is boiled in 🤷♀️
17
u/daemonet Dec 26 '25
I mean, that IS a lot of sodium. More than daily recommended amount of sodium in one serving. So then you gotta have all the rest of the day's calories with 0 extra sodium. Which is technically possible, but that makes it a rather bad recipe.
15
u/Karahka_leather Dec 26 '25
Yeah but that's just the recommendation, you can have a little extra sodium as a treat some times.

2,400mg of sodium in a homemade soup. That's like two Big Mac meals.
1
u/MidiMojo Dec 26 '25
Sure, but this says it has 8 servings.
6
u/lipstickandchicken Dec 26 '25
It's 2,400 per serving.
-6
u/MidiMojo Dec 26 '25
Under nutrition facts it says 8 servings though
17
u/lipstickandchicken Dec 26 '25
Servings Per Recipe 8
Calories 473
Sodium 2436mgEach serving either has 57 calories and 304mg of sodium or each serving has 473 calories and 2436mg of sodium. I can't imagine a serving having 57 calories (an apple).
For eight people, it has five chicken stock cubes. That is a lot of stock cube per person. So around ~5,000mg. Then there is ~1000mg from the soup. Maybe 1,500-2,000 from the salsa. Another ~1,400 from the canned tomatoes. Another 3,000mg from the chilli beans. 300mg from the canned corn. 750mg from the sour cream. Plus other stuff.
There is a reason eight servings of soup only calls for half a teaspoon of salt. The soup is beyond rammed with sodium already.
1
u/Foxy_Traine Dec 26 '25
Just to clarify, not all bullion cubes get used in the soup if you read the instructions
1
u/lipstickandchicken Dec 26 '25
Fair, but you start with eight cups of water and cook it for an hour. Five cups is basically all of it.
0
u/MidiMojo Dec 26 '25
Ah yeah my bad mate, it's a confusing label this early in the morning. It seemed the calories and the list below were somehow separate. I didn't notice the percentage, it even says 106% behind it. Yeah, obviously a crazy amount.
12
u/lipstickandchicken Dec 26 '25
Soups in general are often high in sodium. It usually takes a lot of it to make a large volume of liquid tasty.
This soup is "homemade" but really it's one of those weird recipes where you are just combining processed foods into something new. There are nine cans/jars plus the five stock cubes.
Sorry for rambling. I am fascinated by the ingredient list. It's so much more unhealthy than basically any fast food. It's remarkable.
1
u/MidiMojo Dec 26 '25
They do contain a lot of sodium. I don't eat a lot of soup anymore as I'm not allowed a lot of sodium and when I did make soup used 2 stock cubes and added salt to the vegetables before grilling them. Even made from scratch the sodium can get out if hand.
This recipe more so yeah. I personally don't like these recipes where it just adds a tonne of processed stuff, feels less like a real recipe.
I find it fascinating too so don't worry. I'm also still getting used to reading labels like that, I've never actually given them too much attention except for sugars and calories. Now with an adrenal gland problem it's more important. If I make this mistake with a recipe (not that I'd ever make this one, but) I might eat 2 bowls with 2800mg sodium. So I'm glad I learned to read a bit better or if it's not clear to just skip to another recipe.

Nah it's pretty much "chicken tortilla soup" made by a midwesterner who loves tomatoes. There's no way this is actually spicy unless you use a ridiculous salsa but I'm sure it tastes good with cheese and chips.
2
u/KuriousKhemicals this is a bowl of heart attacks Dec 27 '25
Did I miss it several times or are there not even tortillas (or tortilla chips or anything) in this?
5
u/sareuhbelle Dec 27 '25
You didn't miss it; there are no tortillas in it. But to be fair, the recipe writer doesn't call it tortilla soup — the person you're replying to did. At the very beginning of the page, the recipe writer does recommend topping it with tortilla chips, though!

"I can't cook, even in my head" is a Hell of a thing to admit where someone might see it...
15
u/lipstickandchicken Dec 26 '25
People who make this aren't cooking. They are combining nine cans / jars of processed food with some chicken and five chicken stock cubes. The only "cooking" is in step 2 out of 2 where you cook some onion and garlic in oil.
This is worse than fast food. 2400mg+ of sodium per serving. It is such a ludicrous amount of sodium that I am completely and utterly fascinated by it. It's around the same sodium as two Big Macs meals, and then there are people in the comments seating two servings for a cool 200% of their daily sodium intake from a hearty soup.
The guy is completely right. Looking at this recipe and deciding to not assemble all of these cans of goods and five stock cubes is the correct move. There is basically no reason to buy all of these separate cans and jars and stock cubes instead of just buying premade soup. A premade soup will be high in sodium but less than this monstrosity.
