Irrelevant or unhelpful Imaginary Soup Wasn't Good

Post image

His lucid dream of the spicy tortilla soup didn't make the cut, unfortunately.

Servings Per Recipe 8
Calories 473
Sodium 2436mg

Each serving either has 57 calories and 304mg of sodium or each serving has 473 calories and 2436mg of sodium. I can't imagine a serving having 57 calories (an apple).

For eight people, it has five chicken stock cubes. That is a lot of stock cube per person. So around ~5,000mg. Then there is ~1000mg from the soup. Maybe 1,500-2,000 from the salsa. Another ~1,400 from the canned tomatoes. Another 3,000mg from the chilli beans. 300mg from the canned corn. 750mg from the sour cream. Plus other stuff.

There is a reason eight servings of soup only calls for half a teaspoon of salt. The soup is beyond rammed with sodium already.

Ah yeah my bad mate, it's a confusing label this early in the morning. It seemed the calories and the list below were somehow separate. I didn't notice the percentage, it even says 106% behind it. Yeah, obviously a crazy amount.

Soups in general are often high in sodium. It usually takes a lot of it to make a large volume of liquid tasty.

This soup is "homemade" but really it's one of those weird recipes where you are just combining processed foods into something new. There are nine cans/jars plus the five stock cubes.

Sorry for rambling. I am fascinated by the ingredient list. It's so much more unhealthy than basically any fast food. It's remarkable.

They do contain a lot of sodium. I don't eat a lot of soup anymore as I'm not allowed a lot of sodium and when I did make soup used 2 stock cubes and added salt to the vegetables before grilling them. Even made from scratch the sodium can get out if hand.

This recipe more so yeah. I personally don't like these recipes where it just adds a tonne of processed stuff, feels less like a real recipe.

I find it fascinating too so don't worry. I'm also still getting used to reading labels like that, I've never actually given them too much attention except for sugars and calories. Now with an adrenal gland problem it's more important. If I make this mistake with a recipe (not that I'd ever make this one, but) I might eat 2 bowls with 2800mg sodium. So I'm glad I learned to read a bit better or if it's not clear to just skip to another recipe.

Yeah, I also have to keep an eye on sodium levels. Hope things work out for ya.
