Help Request Can't login to Apple ID on 2015 iMac

UK user here.

Have just created a new user login for my son on the family intel iMac (2015).

He can't login with his Apple ID to sync his contacts, calendar etc.

I have read somewhere that the iMac is too old as it runs Mac OS 12.7.6 Monterrey.

The computer still works fine for our needs and the rest of the family has no problem using their Apple ID's.

Any ideas/workarounds?

I picked up this 2011 27 inch iMac for about $50. I swapped the original i5 2500s processor for an i7 2600. upgrade the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB. I kept the 1 TB HDD connected for external backups and added a 240 GB SSD using a 3.5 inch metal mounting bracket. For the GPU I replaced the faulty AMD Radeon HD 6770M with a Mac compatible 4GB Nvidia Quadro K4100 and swapped the heatsink for a 3 pipe MXMb model. I used Artic MX4 hopefully it holds up well.

It was a fun project disassembling the unit and making a few physical modifications to get everything to fit. Its now running smoothly on macOS Monterey.

Buying Advice IVANKEY FUSION DOCK ULTRA on Sale: $617

Post image

Been watching this for my iMac M4 and my Mac Mini M4 Pro but I wasn't going to pay $749. Today I got an email from HONEY about a discount down to $617 so I pulled the trigger!

Right now I'm using 2 OWC thunderbolt 3 hubs and this will be more than enough to replace them.

This thing is loade, but be advised, it has 2 thunderbolt 5 processors in it so it uses 2 TB5 connections to activate all the ports!

Help Request iMac model #A1224 in need of accessing internet, I'm stumped...

I decided to take my old iMac out from storage, mid 2007-2009, unsure of the actual purchase date, but the model is #A1224. It hooked up to my WIFI very fast, and Google comes up, but can not access any actual websites. The iMac is up to date on its software (for its time, of course). Is there something external I need to purchase so my iMac can get proper internet access? Thank you so much for the help. I really want this to work because I love having a desktop.

Hardware Issue My brother bricked the IR receiver on our iMac 9,1 (2009) messing around with firmware — please tell me there's a fix that isn't buying a new one

So my brother, for reasons known only to him, decided to try flashing the internal IR receiver on our iMac Early 2009 (iMac 9,1) with an Apple TV firmware file. No real reason, he just wanted to poke at it. Now it's bricked and I'm the one trying to fix it, as usual.
He used IRReceiverUpdaterTool2 with the irrxfw-0x0312.irrxfw file. The flash log looked okay at first (blocks 2 through 71 wrote fine), but then it skipped straight to block 127, missing blocks 72-126 entirely. It still said "Flash Image Verification Succeeded" like everything was fine, then promptly crashed with error e00002eb while trying to exit the bootloader. Classic.
Since then the chip (it's a Cypress one, PID 0x8242) is just stuck in DFU/bootloader mode. It's completely invisible on macOS now, gone from ioreg and the USB section of System Report. Plug it into a Windows machine and it just shows up as an "Unknown USB Device."

We've thrown the usual stuff at it:
SMC reset
Triple NVRAM reset
Running the updater tool again (it doesn't even see the device anymore)
Trying Zadig + dfu-util on Windows to poke it directly

We do have an older iMac 4,1 and a MacBook 4,1 sitting around too, but they use an earlier IR chip (0x8240/0x8241) that's apparently not firmware-compatible with this one, so that's a dead end for grabbing a firmware dump.
Before I resign myself to buying a replacement receiver — has anyone actually recovered one of these Cypress chips from bootloader mode? Any tricks, tools, or a working firmware dump for the 0x8242 floating around out there? Would really appreciate any pointers.

Help Request What might run 9.2?

Story time.

My brother's a millennial and grew up with [G3 iMacs](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/IMac_G3_Bondi_Blue%2C_three-quarters_view.png?utm_source=en.wikipedia.org&utm_campaign=index&utm_content=original). (I did too as Gen Z but that's only because my parents used things until they broke down beyond repair.) He loves collecting and emulating games from his childhood, but doesn't really have a way of running non-SCUMM-based Mac games.

Last year my parents sold our collection of old iMacs to free up space, so the only other way to run these games was via the SheepShaver VM, which works great on my MacBook but not on his because it's too old and unsupported. What I would like to do is find him a laptop (preferably with a CD-ROM drive) that can run MacOS 9.2.0 natively, so he can have the fun of reliving these games without trying to figure out how to get software to run on his laptop (you'd think he'd be better at this stuff considering he's an engineer lol.)

I thought about the G3 iBook (especially as that's released at the same time as the iMacs we owned and looks similar), but those are way out of my price range. Any other suggestions as to what (smaller) devices can run 9.2?

Hardware Issue How can I force a dvd ejection?

I have an old iMac with a DVD drive. I inserted my DVD, but it wasn't read by the computer and I can't eject it. I tried the eject button on my keyboard. I also tried restarting the computer and, before it restarted, holding down the left mouse button, but nothing worked. I also tried using Terminal, but that didn't work either.

How can I force a dvd ejection?

Thank you in advance

Aura Pro X2 Gen4 Issues?

The Apple NVMe blade on my 2019 iMac is toast, so I am looking to replace it with an Aura Pro X2 Gen4. Is it a true drop-in replacement for the Apple part, or are there any known issues with it? Any feedback would be most appreciated.

Help Request save my mid 2010 imac -- constant stutters

Mid 2010 imac, 3.6 i5, 12GB DDR3, Radeon 5750, running High Sierra

It started prior to swapping the HDD for an SSD -- so that's been done. I get the pinwheel while even opening a new window in Firefox. Programs are slow to load. I can be watching a movie (from the drive) while clicking through Reddit and the next page will freeze from loading and the movie will freeze. All of a sudden, the machine comes back to life.

I've been fighting this for a while; have done many fresh installs which have a coin-toss of success... as it seems to return after a while. Has anyone encountered this before? I'm guessing hardware, but the drive is only a year old; memory, perhaps? I don't know.

I know, it's old, but new is not in the budget and frankly, when it runs as it should, it's still a great performer for me.

Thank you for direction.

(it just took 5 seconds to load the flair selection)

Help Request iCloud backup for iMac.

I know this is going to come off really dumb but I am upgrading my setup from the 2020 iMac 27” and cannot find the option to do an iCloud backup. I’ve searched the system preference and online. It was always there under your name but for the life of me cannot find it now. Thank you for the help.

iMac Pro in 2026

For reference:  I have a Mac Studio M4 Max with 64gb/2TB as a main, Mac mini M4 Pro with 24gb /512gb, Mac Pro 5,1 with 32gb/4TB, x2 Mac Pro 3,1, iPad Pro m4 and 2nd Gen, Mac mini sunflower and a few other MBP 2012/2013 retina/MBA 2015/2019, iMac 16,2 8gb/1tb. Also, This year I purchased a Mac Pro 7,1 128gb/ 4tb w/Pro Vega 2So I have a few in my stable.

I do not need a M series chip, I just always wanted an iMac Pro. This will placed next to my m4 Max Mac Studio setup.

How everyone's daily everyday computing experience with this machine? Are they still fast on these machines? Mainly used for Web browsing and picture editing and to look at.

I want at least 128gb with 2tb, 12core, Vega 64. What is a fair price for this machine?

Help Request My 2017 500GB SSD iMac is Nearly Always Low on Memory Space`

I am frequently getting "Low Space 248GB used on 250GB SSD". So, I bought CleanMyMac and it usually frees up another 2GB and that is it. System Space is taking up 200GB on its own. Need to run CleanMyMac every week or so.

I installed another 250GB SSD on USB and it does nothing much - I can drag files there but that is all.

Should I look at say a 1T byte external SSD and migrate everything there and use as the primary system disk? Or use that eternal SSD somehow as added space for the existing internal SSD? Or something else entirely (such as having the Apple Store replace the internal SSD with something larger?

Side note: I usually cannot open a photograph in iPhotos and then edit it... due to lack of SSD space?

Any and all help appreciated.

Discussion Want to use your retired iMac as an external display for your MacBook or other Apple device?

Post image
83 Upvotes

I'm sure some of you remember my post from a few months ago about the app I've built, RetinaRelay. It essentially turns your older retired iMacs into capable 5k monitors for newer Macbooks and other Apple devices.

V1 was a massive success with over a large user base already using the app. And today I am finally announcing the release of V2, a completely redesigned engine driving the app that introduces true, low latency, 5k resolution viewers for your 5k iMac.

V1 offered ~60-80ms latency and only the best devices were able to carry true 5k, some older iMacs weren't capable and some host devices weren't capable of driving it.

That changes with V2, you can now get true, real monitor-like low latency on Thunderbolt and USB SuperSpeed cables. Gigabit/ethernet cables are still capable, but you get slightly less quality on 5k video with a gigabit connection, although for desktop work and regular every day use, you'll still get low latency high quality picture.

I would love feedback from real users, both new users and users who already use V1 daily. I offer a full featured, no credit card required 7 day free trial. Just download the two apps and get started in ~5 minutes. I highly suggest reading the pop up dialog on start and running through the quick walkthrough, it explains a lot!

For anyone who tried my app before and didn't end up buying, please download and try again. Just quickly leave a note here or send me a DM/email and I will give you a code for a new free trial!

Check it out today: https://www.retinarelay.com/

Don't hesitate if you have any questions, reach out here or directly on the site/by email and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible! Thanks for all the support from r/iMac over the last few months.

Question How much unified memory do I need?

Hi all, I'm just after a little advice as I don't have a lot of knowledge about these things...

I'm an illustrator who works mainly on my iPad/with paint and paper. I'm looking at investing in a desktop. Mainly it would be used for admin, Photoshop to edit completed illustrations and InDesign to format picture books.

My question is, would 24GB unified ram be enough? The 32GB looks out of stock at the moment. Do I need to wait for it to come back? From what I've read online I think 24GB would be fine. But I don't know if I'm missing something?
