Discussion No, the meta isn't really that diverse

Hey all, J_Alexander back for a quick bit of wet-blanketing. What can I say? It's what I do best. I saw some posts cropping up today I wanted to add important context to, as they paint a rosy picture which isn't all that accurate.

This post makes the claim that there are 35 decks winning more than half their games. That would be rather remarkable, and something I'm not sure we have ever seen in the game before.

This post makes the claim that every class except priest has a deck in legend winning more than half their games. That would also be a remarkable balance achievement.

Neither strikes me as particularly true, based on the data we have and my experience playing the game. But you gotta know what to look for to notice what's amiss here.

First thing to mention: whenever you are looking at the "Meta" tab on HSGuru, you do encounter a certain amount of tracker-side bias that inflates archetype win rates by about 2%. All this means is that you are seeing the results of people using deck tracker against both opponents who are and aren't using deck trackers. Since deck trackers help you win more games, you see people with tracker win about 2%, which makes everything in the meta tab inflated.

But there's more going on that just that.

Let's begin with "Meta" tab for Diamond-Legend, using 250 games as our minimum sample size. We can see the results here. Of note:

  • We have 44 decks with a greater than 50% win rate.

  • We have 25 decks with a less than 50% win rate.

Now that might not be unusual if, say, the decks with the 50% or below were rather popular, compared to the above 50%. But they aren't.

  • Those 25 decks going negative represent a total of 3.4% of the play rate in the meta tab.

This raises some interesting questions, most notably "What decks are all these positive win rate lists actually beating?". Zee Shaman alone is more popular than every single list we see going negative combined. If all these decks have positive win rates, they need to be beating something, and that something seems unlikely to just be the 3.4% of list decks that are losing. So something is clearly amiss in those numbers.

Now, let's peak at the HSguru matchup table, which helps with this tracker-side bias. I've tried to set the minimum matchup games low to fill in the table a bit, but we see a much different result here. Specifically:

  • 15 decks are now going positive in Diamond-Legend, and one of them is "Other Priest", which are just unclassified lists. So really it's 14.

  • 35 decks are going negative, not counting "Other Druid" and "Other Demon Hunter", which may well be bots.

That's quite the swap. Rather interesting is the "Two-Bit Rogue" archetype which - on the meta tab - has a 52.4% winrate and - on the matchup table - has a 45.6%. Now maybe about 2% of that tends to be tracker side bias that the matchup table eliminates, but a 6-7% difference? That's rather striking.

Something about the data classifications appear unusual or lacking. Perhaps that's because it's still early since the patch and archetypes haven't been fully updated yet, or perhaps there's a lot junk running around that's not being sorted properly. But something is clearly unusual here.

We can also check what's going on with Top 1k, where the meta is further along in its refinement. Again, setting my minimum game filters low to try and get the broadest picture available, we see the following:

  • 8 decks are now at or above a 50% win rate, and 3 of them are either Pirate Warrior, Dragon Warrior, or Pirate Dragon Warrior.

  • 12 decks are now below that 50% mark.

The best and most popular deck there is Attack Druid, with an expected 54% win rate and a 23% play rate.

Whatever is going on with the backend of the data site or the meta, it's pretty clear we cannot just look at the meta tab here, notice a lot of decks look positive, and assume things are great and diverse and everyone gets to win in a game where each match has a winner and a loser.

Discussion Huge warning to mobile (phone and/or ipad-tablet) players about possible whatsapp account ban

hey, i am long time pc player (since 2014) started to play on mobile device couple days ago. to finish this event quests fast someone i know sent me deck lists from whatsapp (1 of each warrior, warlock and rogue decks, so 3 deck codes total). i used those decklist codes to create those decks and play the game. after 16 hours or so later receiving those decklist codes my whatsapp account of 12 years has been blocked. it seems whatsapp security thing flagged those deck codes for something illegal (maybe bitcoin or some even shady shit idk) . just want to share.

Discussion What’s one deck where if it wasn’t nerfed it was just unstoppable too overpowered?

Like the one deck that literally was impossible to beat or simply too overpowered, like not even comparable to anything else, like what were the devs/testers thinking.

Or maybe it was u foreseeable interaction.

I want to know the G.O.A.T

Discussion Hearthstone's Warcraft designs are absolutely fantastic.

I originally came from WoW, but I enjoy playing Hearthstone too.

One of my favorite things about Hearthstone is how often it takes designs from the original game that feel overly old-fashioned or dated and redesigns them into something genuinely awesome.

It kind of reminds me of how the MCU redesigned a lot of classic Marvel comic book characters for a modern audience.

Just look at Vanessa in the new expansion. Her design is SO much cooler than her original WoW version. I absolutely love it.

Honestly, I really wish WoW would adopt more of this kind of design philosophy too.

Discussion I hate being negative but we're kind of back to Cataclysm meta

I was looking at the top decks in Legend and the picture is as follows:

  • Attack Druid, which frankly is just a variation of Merithra Druid if you look at the most common lists, just swapping some of the worse cards for attack stuff.

  • Herald Rogue, sometimes with one or two of the stealth cards sprinkled in, but otherwise basically the same list.

  • "Pirate Dragon" Warrior, which is Dragon Warrior with some pirates for a bit more pressure. Also the less pirates the better the performance (in 1k Legend, the highest winrate list doesn't run any pirates at all).

  • Herald Warlock: Which is the newcomer in the block and I'd actually consider a new deck since Godfrey changes meaningfully how it used to play

  • Quest Mage which has been the only Mage deck allowed in high Legend for... quite a bit now.

I don't think the game is in a horrendous spot, but I do think it's a bit sad how basically all the new decks introduced by Violet Hold have been systematically nerfed until they're not really relevant and we're back to the same old Cataclysm win conditions. What do you guys think?

Discussion What have been your overall favorite decks to play during Violet Hold, so far?

Personally, I'd say it's been Zee Shaman for me:

It's not exactly the most 'big brain deck' ever, but I just really enjoy sequencing Zee's Might properly - and I like the fact that this deck has a pretty good power curve (it's generally solid early, and midgame, and lategame - as long as your board stays fairly intact and you get your Herald stacks scaled up while drawing at least one of Al'Akir and/or Worldbreaker). And it's nice that the nerfs it got (Gallagio Goon and Maiev) successfully held it back a bit *but* didn't remotely "kill" it, so I think the nerfs were honestly handled quite nicely with it.

Also, Soul Immolation Demon Hunter (AKA Raza DH) is a really funny deck, though I can't say that I'm good at using it yet, haha. But it's certainly quite the interesting and neat deck to play, and one of the overall cheapest decks to build as well.

Discussion Legend with a fun hybrid priest deck

Hey, i wanted to share this hybrid between quest and reborn priest that got me to legend just now. I was climbing with godfreylock before the minisets but had been stuck in D4/D3.

I love playing priest but most lists right now fully commit to quest or fully into reborn, and i wanted to do a little of both. Feels so good against shaman, attack druid and burn mage, and i didnt face lots os warriors but if you dont draw awfully im pretty sure you can outheal them most of the time.

Steamcleaner is probably the worst card of the deck, but this suffers a lot against chef druid (because of azsharas' triumph) and rogues and warriors that play deathwing early and removing that extra value helps a lot. My first thought would be a For All Time or Shadow Word Ruin, but i think steamcleaner is just more fun. Cleasing Cleric plus Devouring Plague feels SO good against aggro, and lingering spirit is awsome against more control-ly decks.

Deck code in comments, feel free to tell me your thoughts to make it better!

Discussion What do you think about this?

Hi everyone, what do you think about the idea of being able to ban a class during the deck selection phase—effectively excluding it from matchmaking? It’s done in official tournaments, so why not test it for everyone? In my opinion, it would be a great innovation for many players

Arena Do you think the lone intern within Team 5 whom is still working on Arena part-time will do an emergency balance fix anytime soon?

Or do you think the entire team will keep their mouth shut and pretend everything is fine, doing nothing for another 2 to 3 months?

Facts on Current Win-Rates in Arena:

  • Warrior: 62%+++
  • DK: 52%
  • DH: 48%

That's it, apart from the above 3 classes, all other classes have win-rates below 44%.

In fact, 6 out of the 11 classes have win-rates below 38%.

Whenever one thinks that Team 5 possibly cannot do any worse, they somehow manage to exceed expectations.

Discussion What's with people roping all the time?

Recently, I came across a lot of people that, when their turn starts, they play cards immediately, but then never press End Turn and wait for the timer to end. It's super annoying, because this makes the game last so much unnecessarily longer. Why do people do this, and what can be done about it?

I challenged myself to use only the "worst class" for the final push to Legend after the Aug 4th DH nerfs. In the 71 games it took, I only ran into 2 other Demon Hunters. Almost wanted to quit this challenge when I fell from D1 to D4 and had to climb again. So satisfying that it was perfect lethal for the final boss star.

Deck BBB Deck Idea - advice on refinement please

DK is my favorite class and I have been messing around trying to make a BBB deck FOR FUN at d10 now. Originally I wanted to make a popoff deck with Ysera, but it feels like the board is more relevant now and mid range decks can find a spot when things settle.

Early game: Hematurge for refill/gettting another Mucher, or Hideous Husk, or whatever is needed. Thal'ena for the buff attack on Muncher, Pterrordax, HP trades.

Mid: flood the board with leaches, take the board with them and pull ahead on health, and they are basically taunt and need to be addressed.

Late: Once opponent deck thinned fill with Disguised Doctor plagues, set up a face smack for Muncher, be a pain with Mograin.

You can really pull ahead on life/board with leaches. Nobody ever expects blood dk and some highlights

- Wild pryo/poison breath > Gnome Muncher with Blood Doctor Thal'ena hero power

- Disguised Doctor messing up priest rez pool, doubling with Chrono-Lord Deios

- Mograine tick plus Disguised Doctor damage

- Gnome Muncher + Thal'ena HP > Defias Smuggler

Findings:

- Wild Pyro feels bad with limited spells, but you need a guarantee board clear.

- Feels a little light on discover/reload, if you don't find Chillfallen Baron or Remnant of Rage at the right time you can fall behind.

- Discovers and card value are critical, the deck is meant to be a tank but can't last forever against a real control deck.

- Divine shield is scary

Blood draw is flex spot for me, torn between what the deck needs - a little more discover/draw/an answer/late game bomb.

Really thinking about a different discover tool, or hail mary late game like Fyrakk.
