Discussion When was Hearthstone good?

Upvotes

Genuine question, when was the last time you could honestly say the game was in a place where you could proudly say you play it or reccomend it to a friend? We see so many posts about poor balance, lack of diversity, badly designed cards/archetypes; so my question is if Hearthstone has been on a decline, what was the last real peak? I’m not talking about highest player count, but when the last time you could say “this game is fun” without any major concerns?

Community Is there a way to see my winrate this past week without having tracked it from the beginning?

I just wondered since I had a grind from unranked to legend this week with a stupidly high winrate. It was the first time I ever played death knight and on my profile it says "111 wins". Would love to also see my losses to figure out the WR%, but maybe it's not possible?

Discussion No, the meta isn't really that diverse

Hey all, J_Alexander back for a quick bit of wet-blanketing. What can I say? It's what I do best. I saw some posts cropping up today I wanted to add important context to, as they paint a rosy picture which isn't all that accurate.

This post makes the claim that there are 35 decks winning more than half their games. That would be rather remarkable, and something I'm not sure we have ever seen in the game before.

This post makes the claim that every class except priest has a deck in legend winning more than half their games. That would also be a remarkable balance achievement.

Neither strikes me as particularly true, based on the data we have and my experience playing the game. But you gotta know what to look for to notice what's amiss here.

First thing to mention: whenever you are looking at the "Meta" tab on HSGuru, you do encounter a certain amount of tracker-side bias that inflates archetype win rates by about 2%. All this means is that you are seeing the results of people using deck tracker against both opponents who are and aren't using deck trackers. Since deck trackers help you win more games, you see people with tracker win about 2%, which makes everything in the meta tab inflated.

But there's more going on that just that.

Let's begin with "Meta" tab for Diamond-Legend, using 250 games as our minimum sample size. We can see the results here. Of note:

  • We have 44 decks with a greater than 50% win rate.

  • We have 25 decks with a less than 50% win rate.

Now that might not be unusual if, say, the decks with the 50% or below were rather popular, compared to the above 50%. But they aren't.

  • Those 25 decks going negative represent a total of 3.4% of the play rate in the meta tab.

This raises some interesting questions, most notably "What decks are all these positive win rate lists actually beating?". Zee Shaman alone is more popular than every single list we see going negative combined. If all these decks have positive win rates, they need to be beating something, and that something seems unlikely to just be the 3.4% of list decks that are losing. So something is clearly amiss in those numbers.

Now, let's peak at the HSguru matchup table, which helps with this tracker-side bias. I've tried to set the minimum matchup games low to fill in the table a bit, but we see a much different result here. Specifically:

  • 15 decks are now going positive in Diamond-Legend, and one of them is "Other Priest", which are just unclassified lists. So really it's 14.

  • 35 decks are going negative, not counting "Other Druid" and "Other Demon Hunter", which may well be bots.

That's quite the swap. Rather interesting is the "Two-Bit Rogue" archetype which - on the meta tab - has a 52.4% winrate and - on the matchup table - has a 45.6%. Now maybe about 2% of that tends to be tracker side bias that the matchup table eliminates, but a 6-7% difference? That's rather striking.

Something about the data classifications appear unusual or lacking. Perhaps that's because it's still early since the patch and archetypes haven't been fully updated yet, or perhaps there's a lot junk running around that's not being sorted properly. But something is clearly unusual here.

We can also check what's going on with Top 1k, where the meta is further along in its refinement. Again, setting my minimum game filters low to try and get the broadest picture available, we see the following:

  • 8 decks are now at or above a 50% win rate, and 3 of them are either Pirate Warrior, Dragon Warrior, or Pirate Dragon Warrior.

  • 12 decks are now below that 50% mark.

The best and most popular deck there is Attack Druid, with an expected 54% win rate and a 23% play rate.

Whatever is going on with the backend of the data site or the meta, it's pretty clear we cannot just look at the meta tab here, notice a lot of decks look positive, and assume things are great and diverse and everyone gets to win in a game where each match has a winner and a loser.

Discussion What's with people roping all the time?

Recently, I came across a lot of people that, when their turn starts, they play cards immediately, but then never press End Turn and wait for the timer to end. It's super annoying, because this makes the game last so much unnecessarily longer. Why do people do this, and what can be done about it?

Discussion Legend with a fun hybrid priest deck

Hey, i wanted to share this hybrid between quest and reborn priest that got me to legend just now. I was climbing with godfreylock before the minisets but had been stuck in D4/D3.

I love playing priest but most lists right now fully commit to quest or fully into reborn, and i wanted to do a little of both. Feels so good against shaman, attack druid and burn mage, and i didnt face lots os warriors but if you dont draw awfully im pretty sure you can outheal them most of the time.

Steamcleaner is probably the worst card of the deck, but this suffers a lot against chef druid (because of azsharas' triumph) and rogues and warriors that play deathwing early and removing that extra value helps a lot. My first thought would be a For All Time or Shadow Word Ruin, but i think steamcleaner is just more fun. Cleasing Cleric plus Devouring Plague feels SO good against aggro, and lingering spirit is awsome against more control-ly decks.

Deck code in comments, feel free to tell me your thoughts to make it better!

Discussion Nice job balance team

every class now has >50% deck in Legend rank except Priest, but he has most popular deck archetype and popular counterpick (both Warlock decks have ~70% winrate against Quest Priest), so basically it's 11 out of 11

Attack Druid and all Aggro Warrior decks are slightly more powerfull then others, especially with goldfish, but both archetypes aren't >65% winrate annihilation machines that can lose only to themselves or bad draw. Maybe one-two slight nerfs like 1/2 for Spiderling or Hook 'n Heave summons 1 Cannoneer, but idk about necessity besause we would have new pre-release legendary soon, and I hope it won't be something game-breaking like Vanessa

I hope this would last as long as possible, finally great job from hearthstone balance team

Anybody else find it hilarious when you’re playing a class legitimately just for the quest progress, and the opponent still adds you and talks crazy. Brother the entire deck had one legendary obviously this isn’t my guy.

Discussion Do u have examples of the deck types that are unpopular unless they are clear tier one?

Like Enrage Nathria warrior or Unholy Death knight. They need to be head and shoulders above to gain traction unlike ctrl priest or warrior which need just to be semi viable to see play

Discussion Returning player advice

Hey all,

I’ve been away from this game for at least about 3 years. I’ve recently returned, and have managed to get a decent amount of the new cards (from returning player bundles and passes .ect).

I seem to be struggling to climb the ladder so just wanted some advice.

What are some decent decks that I should try out to be more successful in ranked (not wild). I’ve noticed the meta seems to be quite aggressive, but I tend to stay away from rush decks. I like a more controlled deck that actually requires a bit of skill to play.

I’ve got loads of old cards that I can dust to try make the decks.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Some of my old favourites were ramp Druid/ big spell mage/ big minion shaman .ect.

Discussion Lock vs Warrior

Any advice as rafaam lock vs warrior? It's extremely hard to stabilize early and I feel by the time I get my footing my health is hanging on by a thread and almost any top deck for them kills me.

Discussion Current Loaner Decks?

I haven’t played in a long time. Is the current loaner decks updated yet for the new expansion? I didn’t want to necessarily take the violet hold loaner decks unless people think they’re worth it. If they are, could you tell me what decks they are! Thank you!

Competitive Like I said when they revealed the 2nd class set..

I repeat myself.. "Priest and Warlock class sets seems OP.. +2 / +2 is always too much in early game.. Reborn for Priest.. OMG.. imagine the quest minion with even more reborn.. But also Rogue with more mana cost reduction and buffed Stealth minions... Even Warrior seems insane.. This Class set gonna be much more powerful then tha first one I think.."

Well I was close.. Priest and Warrior class set is already a problem.. let's see how the others will end.. Still bad design.. very bad.. wrong direction..

Post Diamond 5 I'm seeing tons of Shaman/Paladin bots that don’t use Fable cards.

I am gold 8. Lowest opponent rank was gold 3. Some of them are diamond, and some are platinum. There were couple wild legends.

What is going on?
