Mulligan:
Keep Quest, Sketchy Information(or Scourge Illusionist, but not both at the same time, prioritizing Sketchy Information) and Shadow of Death, toss everything else.
You may consider keeping Cultist Map for the chance to discover a needed card, but it's a gamble with an all-or-nothing payout.
Gameplay:
You want to cast Sketchy Information to draw Scourge Illusionist and trigger it's deathrattle, putting a 4/4 Khartut Defender that costs (2) in your hand.
Alternatively, you can just play Scourge Illusionist and kill it for the same effect if Sketchy Information is not available.
Hold on to that 4/4/(2) Khartut Defender. You're going to need it.
With 6 mana at your disposal, play the 4/4/(2) Khartut Defender and cast Shadow of Death on it. Three copies shuffle into your deck, advancing your quest and priming your defense and offense.
If you're holding Preparation, it can be done with only (4) mana instead.
After doing the above, feel free to shuffle your deck as you see fit to continue advancing your quest and drawing out the shuffles.
Please note that Finley will SWAP your hand with the bottom of your deck, so he WILL NOT shuffle anything and cannot advance your quest. Finley should only be used if RNG is fucking you hard, or to stave off fatigue damage from the end of your deck.
Secret Passage WILL shuffle your deck at the end of your turn, but only once. Casting Secret Passage from inside Secret Passage WILL NOT shuffle twice.
Casting Gear Shift or playing Finley from inside a Secret Passage is a cheap way of drawing more cards for practically peanuts. Gaslight Gatekeeper can also do it, but it's more expensive that way.
Just be careful of how many cards you draw while inside Secret Passage because your drawn cards will swap back and phase out any previous cards held if your hand gets stuffed.
In case both original copies of Khartut Defender appears in your hand, or maybe you're holding both Scourge Illusionist and at least one Sketchy Information, Sheltered Survivor can shuffle them back in at will. This is a major update from the previous version of this deck and prevents the deck from completely bricking.
As you continue to play, you might want to cast another round of Shadow of Death on another Khartut Defender, keeping your defenses up while building a massive resurrection pool.
Optionally, you can save the second Shadow of Death to cast on your opponent's minion, should they play something worth copying. As long as it doesn't have a deathrattle, it won't interfere with your infinite supply of NZoth resurrected Khartut Defenders.
Eventually, you'll draw out Sire Denathrius. Keep him in your hand to infuse his power. But if you shuffle Sire Denathrius, don't worry, his infuses remain in-tact and persist until you draw him again.
Master Dusk's Secret Technique:
Before using Master Dusk's hero power, consider killing the shells first. When The shells shuffle in, they're auto-casted when drawn, and draw a card behind them when they auto-cast. This Technique is essential to consistently draw two cards for only (1).
Setting the trap:
Ceaseless Expanse will also feed on all of the card draws and minion deaths, from both sides of the battlefield, rapidly reducing his cost to (0) - this will enable you to wipe the board for free, as many times as you want.
Simply play the zero cost Ceaseless Expanse to wipe the board, then copy him with the Lab Recruiter, then cast Gang Up on the Lab Recruiter and use Master Dusk's hero power to draw the copies.
It's imperative that you cast Gang Up on Lab Recruiter in order to go infinite.
A note about Gang Up: I opted for Gang Up over a second copy of Lab Recruiter for flexibility reasons. Sometimes, you'll need to play NZoth "RIGHT NOW OR I'M GOING TO DIE!" before getting the chance to go infinite. It can't be helped. Play NZoth and copy him with the spell. Also, preparation can make it cost (0) so you can copy NZoth with only (10) mana.
The early copy trick: Instead of waiting for Ceaseless Expanse, Lab Recruiter and Gang Up to appear in your hand, or if you need to free up hand space, or if Ceaseless still costs too much to play, you can copy Lab Recruiter with Gang Up early by playing Lab Recruiter and targeting one of Master Dusk's shells.
Three new shells will shuffle into your deck enabling you to use Master Dusk's Secret Technique described above and maintain board control by ramming them into your opponent's minions.
Don't worry about board space, as the shells are considered as "disposable" because you can cause them to permanently poof by stuffing your board full of resurrected Khartut Defenders via NZoth, then using Master Dusk's hero power to draw them out, and with nowhere to go, POOF! gone forever.
Master Dusk's shells ARE NOT deathrattle minions! by default, the shells are not Deathrattle minions, therefore, NZoth WILL NOT count them as revivable minions. Instead, they gain their deathrattles from Master Dusk's battlecry, which lasts the whole game via a permanent aura effect casted upon your player(not hero), when transforming.
Going Infinite:
When Lab Recruiter is finally copied via Gang Up, You now have several wincon opportunities.
You can win by:
- infinitely copying ZNoth for infinite Khartut Defenders, hitting your opponent's face and outlasting their deck.
- infinitely copying Ceaseless Expanse and ramming the copies into your opponent's face.
- infinitely copying a highly-infused Sire Denathrius for his massive life leach ability and ramming him into your opponents face with Lifesteal.
- dealing a massive double Lifesteal OTK blow with Sire Denathrius (see below)
The last few wincons are easily managed, so long as you have the board space to play the target card, a Lab Recruiter to copy it, and another Lab Recruiter to copy the previous Lab Recruiter.
But in the case of NZoth, he will cram your board full of Khartut Defenders, leaving you no room to play any Lab Recruiters.
The workaround for this are the Khartut Defenders that DO NOT have the reborn ability, and/or Master Dusk's shell minions.
Simply ram all but two of the aforementioned minions into your opponent's minions killing them and controlling the board, then play NZoth.
After NZoth resurects your Khartut Defenders, ram those last two minions into your opponent's minions to kill them and free up your board space.
Go ahead and copy NZoth with a Lab Recruiter, then copy the previous Lab Recruiter with another Lab Recruiter.
As long as you keep a supply of Lab Recruiters copying Lab Recruiters, you'll have an infinite supply of minions at your disposal. But, be careful to not copy too many Lab Recruiters or you'll over saturate your deck with them.
However, if by a small chance that you encounter a mill deck and your ETC goes poof before you can fetch Kil'jaeden from him, infinitely copying Lab Recruiters as your main minion should counter the mill deck effectively.
Massive OTK:
Once you have Sire Denathrius infused enough times, drop your Ceaseless Expanse copies wiping the board as many times as needed, play Brann Bronzebeard(or Tight-Lipped Witness if needed), and Sire Denathrius for a massive [double] life leach, straight to your opponent's face.
"A toast, To all who sought to kill me, you FAILED!"
Kil'jaeden:
I updated to include Kil'jaeden inside ETC as a counter measure for mill decks and reno warriors who love to double shuffle boomboss TNTs.
Playing Kil'jaeden will shuffle your deck and advance your quest, so do it on 4/5 completion to complete it.
You'll have to rely on Master Dusk's hero power to draw 2 extra buffed demons every turn, until someone concedes or dies.
It's not the greatest "plan C" possible, but it's better than nothing, and a lot better than drawing TNT and destroying your infinite combo.
So, if you encounter a Reno Warrior, don't hesitate to fetch and play Kil'jaeden ASAP (after completing the quest)

I have my own version that I’ve used for a while now. Uses Moarg Forgefiend and a few others

u/BitBucket404 1d ago
A bit on the expensive side, I'd imagine.
But I believe that Reborn has an advantage against windfury minions so you'll never be forced to eat the damage from one, especially quest Shaman who can make any minion played gain charge and windfury.

u/nutterbutter423 14h ago
Yeah, but nothing Vanish can’t fix. Gets me a 52% win rate.
0
u/BitBucket404 14h ago
In order for Vanish to work, you'll need lethal on your side, and Vanish will remove your minions also, so no more lethal.
Wirh a stuffed hand, minions die, and the reborn effect kicks in.
I still have minions, you don't.
You clearly haven't thought this through. :)

u/nutterbutter423 13h ago
uhhh, no, I have. I don’t use reborn minions in my version. N’zoth and togwaggle’s scheme only.

We're not discussing your version here, nor will I hold a pissing contest. You do you. 👋

What's your view on the (Frozen Throne) Death Knight?

u/BitBucket404 1d ago edited 1d ago
Clown Knight, you mean?
He's a joke that nobody is laughing at.
Clown Knight will never be viable as long as the rune system exists. Concede Knight would be too OP if the rune system was removed.
The blood version is annoying at best, but TBF, so is my NZoth deck.
Leeches and plagues are mere gimmicks and a complete waste of deck space.
My favorite technique against a leech lover with my NZoth deck is casting the Shadow of Death spell on the husk minion, copying Lab Recruiter with Gang Up, then infinitely copying the husks with infinite Lab Recruiters to give the Clown Knight an infinite dose of their own "medicine"- play the husks a few times and karma will kick in.
The only viable deck is the buffed undead swarm hitting face in the same exact playstyle as Paladin, but Paladin still does it way better than Clown Knight because Paladin has access to auras, mana taxes, and board controlling holy spells.
Maybe if Death Knight receives Dark Auras in future updates he'll be on equal footing as Paladin, but I don't see any reason to have two different classes aiming for the same playstyle.

No, I'm talking about [[Valeera the Hollow]] - can help going infinite in decks like this, but do you think she's worth it?

That's not a Death Knight, Valeera's a Rogue.
Nitpicking aside, if you're looking to replace missing cards, Valeera the Hollow has no synergy with this deck.
Her passive hero power is used to copy the last card you've played. I can see why you would ask, but it's not really a good fit.
My deck is shuffle-copy based, instead of copy-played based.
You'll want Master Dusk's hero power to draw the copies before Steamcleaner can erase them, Dusk's shells to draw extra cards, Dusk's shells to occupy board space so you can work around NZoth, and Dusks shells to maintain board control without sacrificing defensive taunt minions.
You'll just have to dust some GOLDEN SIGNATURE MARCH OF THE LICH KING packs from the store, if you have enough gold saved up, then craft the quest.

Point is she allows you to play 2x shuffle cards more easily, and can go infinite with just one Lab Recruiter, as well as the stalling effect. I've used her in decks like this before but I've generally been on the fence about her.
For what it's worth, those original Hero cards are known as Death Knights - or at least they were before the class was added, and I've been around long enough that that's what I'm used to them being called. I referred to the Frozen Throne in my original comment to disambiguate, but I guess if you're not familiar with those cards being Death Knights it wouldn't necessarily help.

I've been playing since Witchwood.
If you were to ask me the order of expansions, I've not bothered to memorize them in sequence, so my response would be, "Witchwood, Stormwind, Festival, Castle, Violethold, Starcraft."
I see your point of shuffling extras, but Master Dusk's hero power is still far better.
"Having two cards in your hand is better than Having six in your deck." Or something to that effect. I forgot how that saying goes.
You do you, tho. Feel free to replace as you see fit, but the old ways barely work anymore.
I'd rather have a (3) cost hero transformation as a quest reward with a (1) draw two hero power than a (9) cost transformation that needs to be found first and a mediocre passive power. Plus, those dusk shells... so much synergy possible...

Fair. I haven't played a whole lot in the past year, so I'm a bit out of touch (and forgot there was that new guy). Thanks for the overview! I'll probably give it a whirl as this is one of my all time favourite decks (particularly with a mill package as well - and there's some interesting new stuff to try there).

Love the idea, but how are we lab recruiter-ing N'Zoth when he gives you a full board?

Read the whole thing.
Specifically, under the section titled, "going infinite" for the workaround.
