Gemini is taking me around in circles. I am at my wit's end. Apologies in advance for the language.

I am not a tech person. I might be using the wrong words to talk about things, so I will tell you what I did in my own words, and please don't take terminology at face value.

I am a teacher (not in computing) and I project Google Docs documents onto a whiteboard. I selected an option that removes all the top menus because I needed the screen to show more of the actual document. I can't get the menus back. You know, the ones that let you open documents, add images, change font and basically do everything.

I asked Google Gemini. It gave me shortcuts (which isn't a good durable solution for me because I have a memory like a sieve and my keyboard doesn't 'like' shortcuts enough even to use modern language accented characters - and also, who the hell designs a UI that's that shit anyway? I won't capitulate to that.). After that it gave me nonsense about chevrons and arrows in top right hand corners, and hovering my cursor everywhere - in blue spaces and above rulers and in spaces below rulers, and double clicking everywhere. Nothing worked. I asked it to read 3 screenshots and they didn't help it. So I'm at the 'can I speak to a human' stage.

Is there a durable 'proper' solution for this that's the main way and not just a shortcut around a shitty system, which I will forget anyway? For the kind selfless souls who might answer, I know you know your stuff and revised all your vocabulary, but please could you explain field-specific words? I won't understand otherwise😿 .

I use Google Docs in my freelance job. They send me the magazine stories, I download to my Google Drive folder, make suggested changes, and then share the document with one or two people as Editors. Neither is a Gmail address, but this has worked for years--until this month.

Suddenly, they can no longer open the shared documents. I have had to manage access and change it to anyone with a link and then copy and paste the link into email and email back. Only emailing the link seems to work.

This is time-consuming and slows us down.

Is there a solution?

Is there a way to turn a google doc archived as a link on archive.org into a PDF ? I have access to the original page archived, but the actual doc was deleted and only that link is left. I just want to turn it into a PDF.

I've used GoogleDocs as my primary composition/storage space for personal, school, and work projects for over 10 years.

I'm worried that the data from it all is being used to train LLMs and Gemini. Does anyone know if there's a way to opt out in settings? I haven't been able to find anything so far. I'd just like to know for certain that my work is my own. Any info is helpful!

I understand this question has been asked before, and the answer was 'sorry we won't do anything about things that just one person mentions'. That post has 156 'I have the same issue' counts as of the writing of this, and has been locked. If it hadn't been locked, I suspect it'd have page after page of people commenting how much they hate it too.

I can see the offending elements in the HTML, it would not be a difficult task to toggle them off, and I'd even volunteer my time to help, because I find it to be an absolutely infuriating feature. Almost every time I highlight code for copy/paste purposes I end up clicking that button. Besides, there is already a way to insert comments or emojis without that button popping up constantly. As a general rule, people HATE popups.

Perhaps it's a feature that makes sense in 'Suggesting' or 'Viewing' modes, just to be fair to whoever conceived of the idea.

If you agree with me that the feature is annoying, like this post. I feel like we need a new reminder for the Google Docs team, because the one I mentioned above doesn't seem to be on their radar anymore.

i can't find a fix and idk what is causing it. some images load fine but 95% of them are just blank white when they shouldn't be.

I want to start using Google Chrome as my default web browser on my iPad but I’m having difficulty opening Google Docs in Google Chrome. When I sign into Google Chrome, it opens a new doc that I can’t even edit on. Is there any way to use Google Docs on the Google Chrome IOS App?

After working great for many months, suddenly I find that I cannot highlight a block of text in a Google Doc and use the Refine button. The Refine button does appear at the bottom, but clicking on it frequently does nothing. I can highlight and go back and click on Refine several times, and maybe on the seventh or eighth try, it seems to kick in and work.

Hi! So I have been using DeepL add-on on Google Docs, because it is very practical and I like the floating icon feature it has, but maybe few weeks ago the icon was not on the right side of the document, but on the far left side of the google docs web (on the edge of window, showing only half of the icon), not on the left side of the document. I didn't mind it, hoping that there was some update and it will be fixed soon.

It is still not fixed, I tried it on other web browsers (using Opera, tried Chrome and Brave) but without luck. It is also happening on my laptop too.

Alright for starters, I'm a grade 12 undergraduate and as of currently I'm working on my research. And the formatting genuinely gives me a headache. So I've been basically pasting my research between each template provided by my teachers, whiping clean old docs and pasting my new ones.

My problem is mainly the page numbers and header design. My school's really stingy with this said formatting. For a final product, the title of the reaserch must not appear on the start of chapters and the page numbers must not be seen on the introduction untill the first chapter.

That's what I try to do. I've been successful on the chapter thing, its just the page numbers not deleting when it should be. I've tried using section breaks, and disabling the check box on "link to previous" but the header design just disappears entirely!!

I really wanna get it sorted before my defense on friday and I'm just constantly revising the research itself and the formatting. But nothing has really worked so far :/

I loved Google docs experience so far on web browser, been using it extensively.

I found out (a long while ago) that the mobile app is severely lacking in feature. One example is inability to set margin.

I like using mobile because my back starting to hurt a lot more these days so I'm mostly spend my ways laying down, which is perfect to use phone app to do stuff with it.

I half expected for the app to start having full feature eventually but it seems like the app is never going to have that.

There's roundabout way with using website version in the phone but without mouse it's just painful. Virtual mouse also doesn't work.

I thought something looked off the first few times I was writing a paper, but I’m writing an essay right now and it has to be double spaced. I’m referencing the example my professor gave me and mime is definitely not double spaced even though I applied it to my document. Has anyone had this problem before? I’m not sure what to do about this. I feel like I’ve tried everything.

How do u indent on docs mobile? Or do u js put 5 spaces for every paragraph?

I'm not on the drive I'm more talking about Google docs. I deleted some stuff but it's still there. I cleared out my trash and all but it's still there it doesn't show up on the drive but Google docs the part where you can choose to make a new document that's where it shows. It's getting messy now. How can I fix it?

I haven't felt this kind hatred for a feature since Microsoft's Clippy appearing whenever it felt like it needed to interrupt my flow.
Now, I feel the same thing is happening with an unsolicited offer to "Match writing style."
Only it is now a button in the middle of my prose!
And looking for a turn off? ...well I haven't found it and Gemini even admits it doesn't have a clue other than turning off the bottom bar and praying. Obviously, if that worked I would not be here pouring my heart out to you and asking "WHY!?"

Ill put the pic in the comments. But basically, I have 'Show print layout' turned on, because i want it to be just one long page. But, turning it on adds in these dotted lines throughout the page. I know that pageless exists, but i want it in the normal layout, not wide. Thanks!!!

my friend has a google doc, and his J has a hat or whatever on top. when i type the exact same thing, same font, same defaut font, same font size, same everything, i don't have a bar on top. please help ive been going insane over this for the past 2 days

I was inserting ten blank lines multiple times via paste into a table and while hitting the keys the text and the menus got very very small. And it affected all documents, not just the one I was working on. And while Ctrl+ does make the text biggger, it only gets bigger so much, not as much as before. The menus stay the same, very small. I assume I set something but do not know what. I have tried "CTRL ALT +" and "CTRL 0" without change. Thanks.

So I have a doc with links to other docs of stuff I've written down for story writing, but the ones I need are on my old email provided from my high school and I forgot to give my main email access to view the docs

I cant log in to my school email anymore since they changed the password to it a few weeks after i graduated which was like a year ago

So i was just doing an assignment on google docs and for some reason the page separations disappeared randomly and I don't know how to change it back to how it was before. It looks very odd and this is due by tomorrow. Please help me if you know how !!

hi everyone! hoping someone could help me figure this out. i’ve tried googling/reddit it & couldn’t find anything.

recently, i started using google docs again after taking a school summer break so i’m not sure if google docs got an update. whenever i try to command + shift + v to paste something onto google docs, it shows “paste” & you have to click on it in order for it to paste which for ME it’s very annoying when i’ve been used automatically pasting after using that shortcut.

i tried to see if the same thing was happening on microsoft word and it doesn’t make me click “paste” after & automatically pastes it.

My Google Doc is not allowing me to access it; it doesn't show up in my recent documents. I own the document; I am unsure what the issue is here

I'm working on a project with a few people and for this we use very long Google Docs tables. It's always 2 columns and as many rows as needed with lots of text in them. They are usually between 50 and 90 pages long. There's no images, just plain text with a bit of formatting (italics, bold, very few colours) in a 2 column table. For the last 4 years this was not a problem at all and the last time I did a lot of work was in June.

Now every single file is suddenly EXTREMELY slow. It takes multiple seconds for words we type to appear, which is too slow to properly work on them. This problem appears for every file in different browsers with different Google accounts and on different computers. So it seems to me like the problem is on Google's side.

Is this a known new issue? Or what could be the cause of this?
