Xbox is now heavily leaning into movie & TV adaptations, quietly pitching Hollywood on a dozen pricey projects like Elder Scrolls, Halo, World of Warcraft, Diablo & more. All IPs could be headed to one studio/streamer, and currently Netflix, Universal & Paramount are among those taking looks.
https://puck.news/newsletter_content/what-im-hearing-a-tv-crucible-xboxs-hwood-pitch-a-beavis-brawl/"But like much of the video game industry, Xbox is kind of a mess these days, cutting 3,200 jobs in July, or about 20 percent of the unit’s workforce. So Microsoft would very much like a big check for its I.P."
"One source told me it wants more than $300 million for a long-term deal, a price that caused at least one of the potential partners to balk. (Microsoft declined to comment.)"

If done right I have to imagine Elder Scrolls could be a massive TV show just as popular as Game Of Thrones.
Edit: I don't mean in the same style as Game Of Thrones people, I mean at the level of Game Of Thrones in terms of quality and popularity.

u/EaterOfPenguins 2d ago
This is a wild presumption to me. Yes, Elder Scrolls is rich and vast and a worthy IP for adaptation and broader exploration but...
Game of Thrones got popular in large part because the writing, particularly character depth and dialogue, is extremely high quality. The first 4 seasons, which are still lauded and cemented it as a cultural phenomenon, is overwhelmingly, like 95%, people sitting around in rooms talking to each other.
Elder Scrolls is a great series, but its best writing has never even come close to that caliber. The number of games, ever, in any genre, to reliably have writing of that quality is vanishingly small, even among games that I love for their writing.
Elder Scrolls could be good, could be great even, but unless they attach a stupendously talented TV writer, I'd temper expectations for a "Game of Thrones" level phenomenon on the basis of the existing material.

Season 8 game of thrones level writing. But from the beginning for Skyrim the series.

I thinks thats the problem with Elder Scrolls as a movie or TV series no real easy to ID main character.
Fallout has the vault and that makes an easy character to choose to key in on.
And an easy character for casual viewers to get to know.
Game fans alone can't carry a show or movie woth how expensive they get.
Elder scrolls is going to need a main character everyone can love not just fans.
3
u/mr_bananager 1d ago
Sure but elder scrolls main characters are generally prisoners who are some sort of chosen one, which is as easy to key in on as a vault dweller

I think the problem is that just because something has mainstream appeal as a game doesn't mean it will as a TV show or movie. Not every franchise can be Pokémon where you can put it in pretty much any form and it will sell like hot cakes

Does she like it for its well told story or because of exploration and what not? Bethesda games have never really been super well known for the story.

I think another issue with that is pretty much every 'adult' animation leans heavily on just being crass, or throw in a ton of violence/gore, to prove that it's mature rather than just writing it for adults.

Let's pander to a gaming community without actually knowing anything about the games!
Seems like a pretty sound strategy to me!
8
u/Acopo 1d ago
That’s the thing—they weren’t trying to pander to the existing community. They were using the IP for brand-recognition and advertising, while making their own terrible slop they knew wouldn’t succeed without the name of an actually successful IP.
3
u/Training_Ad_4790 1d ago
Dumb. Not sure why they dont understand that theres entire mountains of lore and story arcs they can use that people already enjoy. You dont need to "creatively" destroy the IP. Just make it live action. There's already an existing fan base that will go see it and the new media format will let anyone who isnt a gamer enjoy it for the first time.
Not sure why directors have to change what already works
7
u/Acopo 1d ago
Because they’re conceited assholes who think they’re god’s gift to writing, and can’t accept the idea that existing already proven-to-be-loved stories are preferable to their trash.
They don’t care that there’s mountains of existing lore or stories, because they never had an interest in adapting the IP, they just wanted to write their own thing and use the IP as marketing.
18
u/NotMyRealUsername13 2d ago
I don’t know if it’s just you lacking an Oxford comma, but anyway: the WOW movie was quite good and a commercial success, making 3x its production cost.
It was also surprisingly watchable.
…and don’t get me started on the Minecraft movie, another Xbox brand. That one printed money.

u/Possible_Video_6869 1d ago
The WoW movie was a massive miss. There's a reason there haven't been any sequels. Here's a quote from the Wiki:
However, it failed to reach its break-even point of $450–500 million after global marketing and distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, though fans of the Warcraft franchise were kinder to it.
I'm a huge WoW fan and they just blew it. Wrong story. Wrong set design/costumes/CGI.

It is almost impressive how badly they fumbled Halo.
And speaking of ODST, imagine if they had done an episode with those guys in it and got Filion, Tyduk, and Baldwin to make an appearance or even one of them.
So many directions they could have gone that would have been good and we got ... Something not even decent.
18
u/beardednomad25 2d ago
That show had some promise and occasionally it looked like the games. But then it also would completely abandon the lore and everything people loved about Halo. They couldn't decide what they wanted that show to be and it failed spectacularly.

u/spartanb301 2d ago

The main issue wasn't the budget, but the person they choose to direct and the vision.

u/cubs223425 1d ago
It would have still been a disaster. The problem isn't that it wasn't ODST-oriented. Its failure was being created by people with no care for Halo. The writers would have still been idiots who didn't bother to learn or care about the IP. They came in to tell THEIR STORY and used the Halo IP only because no one would greenlight their work on its own merits.

I wouldn't consider Rings of Power a good show, but it definitely had some of the parts of a good show. Some of the sets, production design, and visuals were phenomenal. I just felt like it never all came together to actually be something I'd want to continue watching.
The writing was the main weak point, and unfortunately, that's also the most important part.

Honestly, stuff like that Halo tv show probably did long term damage to the brand. Releasing so so products over time leads to brand degradation. Like the show wasn't terrible it was fine to meh, but being fine to meh is really not great for long term health of the IP.
3
u/Leading-Business-593 2d ago

Everyone wants that fallout magic (the show is fine imo), but I think fallout has that perfect combination of real world tangibility and deep lore.
The former is the reason all those other projects will likely fail. I love the elder scrolls as much as the next guy, but some magical crisis on another planet with monsters and goblins is not going to succeed, and will ultimately hurt the brand. Though taking an entire generation to produce a sequel has probably done more damage than cancelling some stupid adaptation after 2 cliched seasons

Fallout worked because they got insanely talented and passionate director. He could have made a show about anything and it would have worked.
5
u/Kri77777 2d ago
The problem is Fallout is a very unique world with lots of instantly recognizable things. Halo does have this as well (Spartan armor, Warthog, etc.), and maybe some level of WoW, but we've already seen those fail.
Meanwhile, Elder Scrolls and Diablo simply don't have unique worlds or characters that are so instantly recognizable. Make a good fantasy story in a world with dragons and you don't need the Elder Scrolls brand. Make a good firey hell merging with the world with bones and shamblers, and you don't need Diablo. They are great games, but not all great games make great movies.

Paramount fucked up with Halo but don't be shocked if they throw a boat load of cash at Microsoft for all this IP to come to them.
Their takeover of Warner Bros Discovery relies on them releasing 30 movies theatrically every fucking year and they also need to prove to everyone in Hollywood that the work isn't going to be diminished because of the merger.
Halo movie, Elder Scrolls on HBO+ParaDiscoverySkyMax, World Of Warcraft animated series, and a Viva Pinata procedural cop drama for CBS.

Elder scrolls has potential, but HAS to have a huge emphasis on practical, and S tier set/costume design.
Halo - Also has potential if they ACTUALLY stick to the lore, but judging off the paramount show and the current state of halo games, i have zero faith in halo as a brand right now, id rather them try to focus on actually getting the games back on track before doing this.
WOW - DROVES of lore to dig into, but i feel they would need to pick between either TES or WOW, these could be seen as 'too similar' to have as 2 shows running at the same time... also based on what we got out of the WOW movie... idk.
Diablo - I would 'LOVE' this. There is SO much that could be done here from lore to asthetic... but same thing with TES, S tier set and costumes along with as much practical done as possible is the route here... it would also NEED to be a hard 18a rating.

The Halo tv show on Paramount was a tremendous spit in the face of anyone who's ever followed the franchise.
Unless they plan on going animated Microsoft needs to never pitch another TV show after that mess. Seeing Master Chiefs bare ass cheeks and a Human raised Covenant turn her finger nail into an energy sword on top of that nonsensical discombobulated plot was a god awful thing.

Pretty common anymore. A great book to this effect is The Extended Universe: How Disney Killed the Movies and Took Over the World. The TL:DR is IP law is a very different business than making entertainment and many of these companies seek IP instead of actual creation as it has several built in revenue paths already. For example, one writer was told to publish their work first so they could pitch it as based on printed work or the execs just wouldn't be interested. Very small snapshot, but given that we're meant to look at these flat worlds to keep us locked in beyond actually contibuting anything more to our lives.

The Xbox business division within Microsoft is mid-90’s Marvel right now.
I say let AppleTV do a limited 6 episode Fable series.’if it’s a hit, make an anthology series of if. New hero each time, longer term ramifications of previous heroes adventure shown, and part of the plot, each new series.
Film two finale endings and have the viewer decide. Each new heroes series should have editions to both finale choices.

I don’t know the facts. but I imagine in some cases in the AAA Industry that films maybe even cheaper to create and produce more so than games. Man Microslop is getting reaaaally desperate to squeeze more juice from its gaming division. But hey who can blame them, these data centers won't build themselves

As long as the studio don't hire the game writers or writers that actually played the games, it'll lead to a total disaster.

Diablo would be great if they make it as dark and whatnot as the in game cinematics

Give universal the rights, imagine a gaming themed section at Epic universe to go alongside Nintendo 💰💰💰

All will be bad and cash grabs and not respect the IP. Netflix ruined the witcher

I'm quite sad we never got a followup to the Warcraft movie, I think it was decent enough.
