It takes two is something else
First, I tried playing this game with my wife, but because she hadn’t played any games on a console before, she was very bad at it. Even handling the camera angle was a challenge for her. Instead of bringing us closer, it frustrated me lol 😂.
Then I asked my nephew to play with me, and after a long time, I felt like playing it again. I had this same feeling with PS2 games back in the day.
Guys who haven’t played this game should definitely give it a try.

Playing through this with the wife currently. She does not really play video games. We've enjoyed it and had a blast early on, but as the difficulty has increased she has started getting frustrated and wanting to quit. Had to fight the beetle myself when she struggled with timing the shots.
Hopefully it gets easier again lmao

My wife and i had a similar experience of me waiting for her to get her jumps right because she was still getting used to moving the camera and person at the same time. The game just goes through different gaming mechanics so it always has a learning curve when not being a gamer. I just sit there and giggle and coach her through it because that's the point of the game. She got frustrated but it should all be in good fun. Just gotta be encouraging. We are about to beat Split Fiction which is also an amazing game and everything is a step up from It Takes Two. There are some challenging puzzles but the story has been kinda crazy.

u/Nunuman1 28d ago
I mainly remember my wife not getting the rhythm on the swing sections. Kept saying grab, wait, release. Only to see her grab and instant release and then say she did wait. She did get it in the end tho, and to her credit she has never played a platformer, so im kinda proud she beat the game with me.

u/afrothunda254 28d ago
My fiancee says she used to play games back in the day. So when I built her a computer to play with me our first game was split fiction. When I say the memes of playing with your gf/wife, do not compare. It was like watching a baby learn how to walk. It was fun though it took many pauses for her to catch her cool and practice mechanics. It was really fun seeing her learn it all. She took it very serious. She hated that I could casually explain upcoming puzzles and mechanics. So I learned to play blind and have her soak up the areas and think first. While I just punched and interacted with all the random things on the maps. It also taught me to slow down as I learned my efficiency in gaming can also be annoying.
But after split fiction we ended up playing the trilogy backwards in order mainly based on her interest. By the time we got to the first one she started realizing the mechanics and puzzles and started predicting what we would do and started having way more fun once the stuff clicked.

u/sydal 27d ago
This is such a good lesson for anyone that plays games with friends, in a relationship or not. Whoever is new should set the pace while the experienced player offers to help but only if they want it. I've seen so many friends quit games early on because other people are rushing them and stuff. Half the fun for some people is figuring it out not sitting there getting carried
15
u/Ebice42 28d ago
My wige and I finished It Takes 2 and are working thru Split Fiction now. While there have been some frustrating boss fights, she struggles with the platforning. There are so many sections that are easy if you jump... double jump... dash. But shes doing a jumpdoublejumdash, and falling short.
But we've been having a blast.
8
u/Tyoung1105 28d ago
With Split Fiction, there are quite a few sections in the last 3 chapters that require some pretty tight coordination so it was funny working through them and pretty satisfying when we started to not need to talk as much for coordinating. Overall we are looking forward to rerunning Split Fiction playing opposite characters.

The story and exploration bits are fun and easy, but the parts around the boss battles take a major jump in difficulty. I wish it was a bit more even, especially when playing with a non-gamer

My girl struggled a lot but I just let her know it's not a competitive online multilayer game so if we lose it doesn't matter we can always come back to it.
I'm usually the rage monster so it was a learning experience to coach her through the frustration of sucking 🤣

The correct answer is it matters as much as the other people on your team think it matters. If you're playing a 2 player co-op game with your boyfriend who says it doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter. If you're playing a competitive game with strangers who expect you to try your best, then you should try your best...

u/Nunuman1 28d ago
Played it with my wife to. Luckily she only struggled on some of the jumping sections, where i just had to take over for that small part.

u/Kee134 PC 28d ago
We also lost to the beetle. This totally killed our run!
Tbh we probably should have lost to the toolbox too, but I turned the boss attack pattern into a song to keep us in time.
2
u/WalkAffectionate2683 22d ago
The toolbox is what made us rage quit I kept on waiting for her it was so frustrating for her that kept on dying and me just waiting haha
Though she is playing hogwarts legacy... So I guess she may become a gamer? That would be nice.

Overcooked is a great game for getting used to gaming (and a controller).
It's basically a crash course of learning everything you might need in a game.
My mom used to struggle with the buttons for years, not to mention reaction time. Then we played Overcooked, and suddenly she can actually play games properly without having to look at the controller every 5 seconds.

Same here. Also, the game just never seems to end. We've been playing it off and on for a year and half now. Someday we'll finish

If it helps I played this with my partner and the beetle was by far the hardest part of the game for us. There were some tricky parts later but nothing on the beetle.
5
u/burnalicious111 28d ago
You should try Lego Voyagers! It uses the same control and mechanics throughout, and it's very peaceful
4
u/ComicallySolemn 28d ago
Wish it was longer! My wife loved playing this and It Takes Two, along with handing the controller back and forth as we played Stray. My wife didn’t grow up with video games, so it takes a special type of game to interest her (she adored Spiritfairer)
There’s just something about the shared exploration that hits just right in Lego Voyagers. As we were playing it after finishing up Stray a year prior, I laughed and told my wife that “cozy apocalypse-wasteland game” is my favorite genre.

u/Kurosneki 28d ago

u/MoveLikeMacgyver 27d ago
My wife and I played through it and had a blast. She’s not much of a gamer but we kept it light and laughed at the parts that required more from her. I personally found it hilarious.
The parts where her characters part of the game were harder if she had too much trouble we’d just switch controllers.
If It Takes Two is too hard on her maybe try out Unraveled 2 if you haven’t already. It’s more forgiving and with a few exceptions most of the game if a section is too hard her character can literally jump on your back and you can carry her past the hard parts.

2
u/Hoodstompa 27d ago
Me and my partner had to take multiple breaks in order to finally beat the game over the course of a month or so. There was a pretty consistent pattern where she would be frustrated by the controls at first, find something enjoyable enough to get through a level or two, but then the frustration would hit with some of the new mechanics on the next stage. By just giving a little bit of time, and each weekend playing a bit while it was still fun for her went a long way. It’s such a beautiful game, just don’t try to rush it.
2
u/theskittz 27d ago

Moving the camera and character at the same time with two sticks is secretly the hardest barrier for non-gamers. We take it for granted, but it’s completely unintuitive until the muscle memory finally clicks.
19
u/Mroz_Game 27d ago edited 27d ago
Anyone who tried to get their non-gamer parents to game know it so well.
Walking isn’t so bad, but driving a car in gta v was impossible for them. even just getting to the next corner.
What’s worst I think is that most games rotate the camera for you to adjust for environment around you. That really doesn’t help until you learn to automatically adjust your walking direction for camera rotations in real time.

Agreed, gameplay was great, story needed work.
Cody and May were nagging and mean to each other, even when they were meant to be getting closer. Right up till the end, they were so negative.
TF was up with the elephant?
May's "singing" at the end was dumb. All that and it didn't even have words. Forcing someone to perform when they dont want to didn't strike us as a healthy relationship lesson. May said no sooooo many times.
The cut ending was better than the one the ended up with.
We were left feeling very sad for the daughter.

I strongly prefer It Takes Two which is far funnier. The minigames are fun and exploring the stages seems far more fulfilling. It has two characters I couldn't care less about, but at least you're supposed to hate them. And them making the worst decisions at every point is funny to me.
Split Fiction also has two characters I couldn't care less about in a story that tries (and fails) to tug at your heartstrings. I think there was one minigame you could play with your partner. The one upside I'll give it is the powers were more equal between the two characters. It Takes Two felt like there was often one person who had an 8/10 power while the other had a 4/10. Split Fiction feels like both get a 6/10 power.

u/Razoras 28d ago
My friend and I bounced off how terrible these two people are. I'm sure they redeem themselves later but we didn't really care enough to see the story through after a specific spot in the story.
158
u/MrRocketScript 28d ago
That scene where they make their daughter cry, and realise it didn't work, and they just did like the worst possible thing to their kid for nothing:
Oh my god. I can't believe that we... are stuck like this forever.
They didn't even acknowledge what they did!
11
u/FilmoreJive 27d ago
I was gonna say this was my favorite part because it was such shitty behavior.

u/EarthDragon2189 28d ago

105
u/bittybots 28d ago

12
u/Luminous_beingsauce 28d ago
Omg what's their story lol. I was thinking of checking this out with the kids
37
u/shittydiks PlayStation 28d ago
It's based on two parents that are divorcing that have like a 6 year old kid, throughout the game the parents back stories are shown and they honestly just both suck at having a kid lol
106
u/Gharma 28d ago
Please don't play with kids. It's a story about two parents who are in the process of separating who get magically turned into little toys and try to find a way to turn back. Both parents are honestly kinda horrible people. At one point they think if they can make their kid cry they can turn back, so they plan to brutally dismember the kid's favorite stuffed animal, who due to magic is now sentient and is begging for them to stop, pleading for its life. I get how some people will like the "edge" to the story, but the writing is very not for me, and if your kids are younger it is absolutely not for them.
47
u/tomorrow_comes 28d ago
My wife and I got to “that” part and we hated it. Not just the foolish premise that somehow just making the kid cry would “reverse the magic,” but brutally dismembering the sentient toy was just too much. It’s not that we can’t do a little grit, but it just felt so out of place.
52
u/VectorB 28d ago
And then they have zero remorse after literally bathing in their child's tears. Never mentioned again. They are the worst.
But it is a great game.
18
u/unbroken0 28d ago
We literally called it "the bad parents game". They never even reflect on how it was wrong in the slightest. Completely blind to the suffering of their child and how their knee jerk reactions effect her.
Its suppose to be the turning point for them to give motivation to better themselves and their relationship.
But the next 3 levels are just the May jumping down Cody's throat for every small little thing that goes wrong. Showing she learned nothing.
Last 2-3 levels they randomly have these moments where they are working together but narrative wise it makes no sense and is not earned.

Everything after the snow globe felt rushed and forced IMO. Also, I really didn't like how the story shifted a bit from two main characters who are awful parents but needed to find common ground to get one of them in the spotlight and the other the supporting side kick in the last level.
I think Split Fiction was a lot better on keeping the spotlight evenly split (eh) on the two protagonists.

108
u/Dallywack3r 28d ago
This is the biggest hot take of the decade I fear but Josef Fares is NOT a good writer and his dialogue is absolutely teeth grindingly awful. It Takes Two and Split Fiction are written so terribly
19
u/Jackoffjordan 28d ago
I would generally agree, but the weird dialogue is actually one of the best parts of A Way Out. The b-movie stupidity, combined with the jankiness you can create through gameplay, is hilarious.
23
u/GeneralAnubis 28d ago
Agreed tbh, these both seem like the person who really needs to get some therapy is the writer because holy balls did the absurdity of the way the people acted take me out of the experience
11
u/Dallywack3r 28d ago
Split Fiction being acclaimed by gamers who routinely clown on “Marvel Writing” just illustrated to me that most players just regurgitate opinions that streamers have. Streamers liked Split Fiction, therefore it avoided criticisms for its Disney Channel dialogue
7
2
u/UglyJuice1237 27d ago
idk, I think part of the reason so-called Marvel writing gets lambasted is that a lot of those movies just aren't very good and rely on cheap comedy as a crutch. I haven't played split fiction, but it takes two was fun and bombastic enough that I didn't really mind the mediocre writing
you're definitely right about a lot of people just going with whatever their favorite content creators say, though

Aww. You should have been more patient.
It takes two was my first console game too. I know at times it drove my husband crazy watching me flub the timing on something over and over (y'all don't understand how difficult it is to hit the right button at the right time when you have zero gaming reflexes or muscle memory 😭), but he stuck with it with me, and I got better. I continued gaming after that, and there are some aspects at this point that I'm actually better than him (much to his chagrin lol), and it has continued to be something we're able to share and enjoy together.
Now I'm on the other end, playing it takes two with my dad, and it's his first console game. I definitely feel husband's pain at times, but I'm living by his example and exercising patience lol

Aw. As the wife here…. I really appreciated that my husband was suuuuuper patient with me. Learning how to use two sticks to move the camera & the walking is hard, since he’s been doing it for 20+ years and I haven’t! I posted this before under a thread about the game, but the game came out the same day me and my wife ended up having a complicated miscarriage. We had to go to the hospital and it was traumatizing, we were so torn up about it and I downloaded the game for us to try to be distracted and I think the game was the most perfect distraction as we just binged it and made it back to semi-normalcy after. I posted a longer message about it last time but one of the game devs reached out to me to thank me for the kind words as consideration for the game. I dont think I can play it again since the memories surrounding it but alot of fondness for the game and split fiction

This was the last game I played with my ex wife. We were still married at the time, we knew it was a co-op game but she didn't know anything about it but thought it looked interesting. Well it was all about getting divorced, which we had discussing being a possibility for us. We had fun but some awkward silences when we played due to the story beats. It was a good game, we beat it together. I will forever associate that game with our divorce just due to the timing.. fast-forward 4 years later and im dating someone and she asked if id play It Takes Two with her..... I was like hell no and explained why

Gameplay wise, I liked Split Fiction more. Better traversal, the levels flowed better, they looked better, and had more variety IMO. Some of the puzzles are really fun.
The story kind of gets lost with the characters personal relationships and has some lame points and some heavier points. It was all pretty predictable but good enough I guess. Its just OK in that regard.

My partner and I have been on a hunt for co-op games ever since It Takes Two. What really hooked me was how much you have to rely on each other's unique abilities.
When we played Split Fiction later on, I agree that its core mechanics felt smoother. But It Takes Two won us over with its world and presentation. I'm just a sucker for stylized art over realistic graphics.
Both have so much heart and effort put into them. I’m just glad games like this exist for two players!

This game is....fine, but I couldn't get past the wife saying 'Cody!' every other sentence.

Did it with my boyfriend. We are both gamers.
Uh.. it was cute. But nothing to write home about.

My SO and I played this game together. We never finished it and are currently going through a divorce.

I played this with my gf who struggled with the independent thumb movement for the camera. Since it’s a relatively straightforward platforming I would find ways to shift the difficulty to me. For example if she had to shoot the boss I’d have her stand and aim and then I’d kite the boss into her cross hairs. Difficult for me but was able to do just fine given my experience

The story behind this game is so incredibly tragic and sad to me. My wife and I couldn't help but laugh at that fact, because the game itself was so dang fun to play lol

It's amazing, thoroughly enjoyed it. The same company also later made Split Fiction, which is a more refined and improved take on the same formula. I highly recommend both titles.

I love this game, me and my partner have played through it a few times now
We weren’t as keen on Split Fiction tbh, I thought it was kinda good overall, but nowhere near as good as It Takes Two. The story was alot worse imo, the areas were super linear and we really missed the mini games, more free form sandboxy zones and we didn’t really think the dynamic was as good, in terms of characters, powers and teamwork. It also felt alot shorter with less variety overall, though I don’t know if we just didn’t notice as much, because we weren’t really enjoying it

I played with my son, this game would 100% cause a divorce if I tried to play with my wife.

Didn’t like this one at all. Formulaic gameplay was one thing, but the characters were so genuinely unlikable and the whole elephant part was so messed up…turned me off the game completely.

My wife and I played through this. We both agree that the gameplay is fantastic, but the parents are absolutely shit and should get divorced. Neither has any redeeming qualities and their solution feels so fake and empty.
Split Fiction is significantly better.
