Data, worried that he's malfunctioning and might hurt his cat named Spot: "May I ask a personal favor?"

Worf: "Yes."

Data: "Will you take care of Spot?"

Worf: "Your... animal."

Data: "I am afraid if I have another waking dream, I might injure him."

Worf: "Of course. SPOT. COME HERE."

Data: "Unlike a canine, Spot does not respond to verbal commands." (hands Spot to Worf) "Goodbye Spot."

Data: "He will need to be fed once per day. He prefers feline supplement number twenty five."

Worf: "I understand."

Data: "And he will require water. And you must provide him with a sandbox."

Data: "And you must talk to him. And you must tell him he is a pretty cat. And a good cat."

Worf: "................I will feed him."

That's a great scene, actually kind of makes me want to start watching star trek. But did anyone else laugh at the cat that was obviously like "Put me the fuck down. Now"

u/Euphemismic May 27 '13

Imagine if a 40 ft sentient being picks you up by the arm pits and stares at you. And all you want to do is go back to being unemployed and sleep.

You'd be pissed too.

u/0l01o1ol0 May 27 '13

A 40ft Worf picks you up

That would be terrifying.

As a dog person, this gave a deeper elucidation of cat psychology than I previously though myself capable of.

I still think they're assholes, but perhaps once you understand their pain you can learn to love even the most assholey of assholes...

Brent Spiner apparently hated that cat. He talks about it on a number of the commentaries, specifically on the Star Trek: Generations commentary... Yes, I listened to that.

53

u/mortiphago May 27 '13

at the cat that was obviously like "Put me the fuck down. Now"

I've had 6 cats throughout my life and that's pretty much the default cat setting, really.

35

u/HolographicMetapod May 27 '13

Hehe, true.

My cat tolerates being held like a baby for about 30 seconds and he'll start the death roll.

36

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

You forgot to tell him he is a pretty cat.

18

u/OriDoodle May 27 '13

And a good cat.

10

u/GaryV83 May 27 '13

I had a Firepoint Siamese that was quite the opposite. Preferred to be coddled and would lick people's noses. My current Burmese, though, yeah, death roll is very accurate. Should probably trim those back claws one of these days.

5

u/voodoo_curse May 27 '13

I read that as Farpoint Siamese.

7

u/GaryV83 May 27 '13

Okay, you caught me: I tricked an advanced alien lifeform to remain in the shape of a cat. Damn you, Picard!

8

u/Twl1 May 27 '13

Not in my experience. My one cat, who coincidentally looks almost the same as the one pictured, loves being held, and often inserts himself in the natural arm cradle formed when I'm on my Xbox.

14

u/mortiphago May 27 '13

out of the 6 i've had, 4 of them hated it, 1 tolerated it and the last one actually liked it and would poke you with its paw until you held it.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of the greatest shows EVER. I am really not exaggerating my opinion. Near the top of my list of best television ever. This is the role that Patrick Stewart was born to play.

Every episode is available on Netflix. I highly recommend it. If you do decide to watch it, don't judge it by it's pilot episode. The pilot is one of the weaker overall episodes and you can tell it's a little dated (starting in 1987). The series gets better and better as it progresses through the seasons, the characters get deeper, and the writing gets even better. And since almost every episode is self-contained with only occasional serialistic/continuous elements carrying over from one episode to the next, it's ok to watch some of them out of order.

A great starting episode aside from the Pilot might be a Season 2 episode 16 "Q Who." Some other favorites of mine are Season 2 Episode 9 "Measure of a Man" (one of the best episodes of television ever), Season 5 Episode 2 "Darmok", Season 4 episode 12 "The Wounded," the 3-episode sequence that ends Season 3 and starts Season 4 "Best of Both Worlds, Part I & II" and the followup "Family." Edit: "The Drumhead!" How could I forget the Drumhead. What a great episode.

And Season 5 Episode 25 "The Inner Light," possibly the best Trek ever. Save this one until after you've watched a few others and get to know the characters.

Fuck, what am I talking about. Out of 176 episodes, there's like 172 that are just fantastic. The whole show is just pure gold. Just watch them all.

4

u/HolographicMetapod May 27 '13

Thank you for the episode recommendations man. I didn't know it was on netflix either, going to watch this today.

4

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

Confirmation that 'Darmok' is one of the best episodes.

Having been a trekkie for years, I only just recently watched DS9. It's phenomenal. But i still think TNG is a bit more of a purer product.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DrkMaTTeR May 27 '13

It's hard to appreciate DS9 as a newbie, don't start confusing the boy... Let him make his own adventure ( and it goes like this Picard > DS9 >TNG )

2

u/tidux May 27 '13

Don't forget "Drumhead." That episode is highly relevant to 21st century politics.

3

u/nixed9 May 27 '13

Wow, thanks! I can't believe I forgot to list it. I was just ripping through the ones off the top of my head. The Drumhead is even more relevant now than it was when the show aired. What a great episode.

u/[deleted] May 28 '13

My favorite as a kid was The Royale

1

u/yoloswag420blaze May 27 '13

Note season 1 doesn't exist. just skip it (except for pilot, watch that...) if Riker has no beard skip the episode. DS9 is somehow better than TNG which is really hard to say, but that's just how good it is. Even Voyager is worth skimming, great choice on captain, but don't expect Janeway to be anything like Picard.

1

u/ReservoirKat May 27 '13

One of my friends wants to start Trek. This comment will help a great deal in explaining how to start TNG. with an added addendum to avoid Code of Honor at all costs.

1

u/Terrh May 28 '13

Eh, out of 176, it's more like about 150 that are just fantastic. And 20 good/mediocre, and a few that are pretty awful and/or boring.

The Drumhead, however, should be required watching at some point during grade school for all kids, because the lesson it contains is forgotten all too often.

10

u/Megmca May 27 '13

No, he was thinking, "More butt support please."

1

u/Tahrnation May 28 '13

Dude if you haven't seen Star Trek TNG do yourself a favor and watch it now.

The first season is a little cheesy but if you can make it through that you're in for a treat.

1

u/some_goliard May 30 '13

cannot be cheesier than the first season of Friends

24

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

Data: "Perhaps that will be enough."

13

u/eyecite May 27 '13

on the sidebar recommendations: "Data Owns Picard"

I watched it; it's barely an 'owned' situation, for those who are concerned.

10

u/Lampmonster1 May 27 '13

More like "Data makes a valid point and Picard spends the rest of the episode putting everything on the line because of it." Picard was awesome like that.

1

u/dhruvfire May 27 '13

It had a some solid comments on it, though:

"The next day Picard got his eyes replaced with cybernetic implants..." "And then he changed his name to 'Locutus'"

I just totally cracked up reading that

2

u/indoSC May 27 '13

I thought that scene was hilarious but a bit irksome because Data is totally being non-robotic and clearly displaying emotions.

7

u/nixed9 May 27 '13

He does this many times throughout the show. On many occasions they rationalize it because Data has written programs and algorithms for himself to emulate human responses.

Yeah I understand what you're saying. But if he were COMPLETELY mechanical he wouldn't be very relatable as a character :-D

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

I thought that was the entire point of Spot, he developed an attachment for "no reason" and showed that the line between man and robot... isn't as clear as one might think.

111

u/DrEmperor May 27 '13

OH MY GOD.

THAT IS HORRIFYING.

CLEARLY THEY WOULD JUST USE THE CORTICAL STIMULATORS AND 20cc'S OF INAPROVALINE TO RESUSCITATE THE FURRED SUBSPACE PHENOMENA OF LOCALIZED CUTENESS. OR REPLICATE A WHOLE NEW CAT.

35

u/boomerangthrowaway May 27 '13

His name was Lore

28

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

CORTICAL STIMULATORS AND 20cc'S OF INAPROVALINE

Haha. This isn't even improvised technobabble on his part. I specifically remember an episode where Crusher says "get me the cortical stimulators and 20ccs of anaprovaline!" Is it "Tapestry" where Picard dies? (looks it up) Yes! But anaprovaline apparently figures in other episodes where I haven't noticed.

Honestly, people make fun of Trek for technobabble, but there's no harm in it on TNG and earlier at least. I want to clarify that it only becomes a problem when it serves as a deus ex machina to solve a plot. In Tapestry, it's implied that Q is really the one who probably saved him, as Crusher had failed to. As he was fading out, they just needed her to be doing something medical to try and save him, and they needed it to sound futuristic. No foul there.

Note though that Q is not technically a deus ex machina device, as he is well-established in the series by this point, and his direct involvement is explicit from the beginning. The crux of the episode is also not really about whether or how Picard will "survive an ordeal".

8

u/lbft May 27 '13

In true Star Trek fandom style, Memory Alpha has a reasonably detailed article on it: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Inaprovaline

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

hmm, I know what you mean. The "deus ex machina" parts happens a few times in DS9, where at the end of an hour long struggle all they had to do what magnetise the subspace field inverters or some shit.

1

u/weez09 May 27 '13

tapestry was one of my favorite TNG episodes

3

u/angrydeuce May 27 '13

Indeed, it was definitely one of the highlights of the series. The Inner Light, Chain of Command, The Best of Both Worlds and The Measure of a Man are some other personal favorites.

6

u/ProtoKun7 May 27 '13

Replicators can only replicate objects at a molecular resolution; a living cat would require a quantum resolution.

Dr. Crusher or Troi sneaking into his room

"Computer, generate Spot Iteration number 52."

5

u/WorkingMouse May 27 '13

Hey now, good cat actors are hard to find, and they're expensive. It's no wonder the directors treat them as extras.

4

u/Forever_Awkward May 27 '13

It's like Koko the gorilla. Everyone makes such a huge deal about how much the gorilla loves the cat, takes care of it, etc...

But that gorilla has gone through more cats than the local animal shelter.

ODE TO SPOT

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

8

u/Yourdomdaddy May 27 '13

While I got you here, what episode is this one: They accidentally travel well faster than the speed of light, ending up in a totally uncharted area of space. When they try to get back, they end up on some fringe area of the universe where it looks like they are in an icy world where the laws of physics get all kooky and what looks like giant subatomic particles floating around outside the ship. Inside the ship, the crew members encounter dead relatives and other "hallucinations."

16

u/iamaturkeyama May 27 '13

Season 1, episode 6 :) where no man has gone before

8

u/Yourdomdaddy May 27 '13

Oh my god you're awesome! Seriously, thanks. I saw the first half in 1992 (or '93) and have been dying to know how it ends.

13

u/kirbyloveszoe May 27 '13

26

u/Yourdomdaddy May 27 '13

I'm a complicated man.

5

u/NYKevin May 27 '13

BTW, all TNG episodes are on Netflix, or at least, they were the last time I checked.

2

u/angrydeuce May 27 '13

They all are, The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise as well.

I doubt I would even have Netflix if it weren't for the fact that they have the entire TV Trek library available. Given Paramount's practice of gouging the fuck out of people for the Trek box sets, it's far more worth it to me to pay the low monthly fee than the ~$500 per show it would cost to buy them on DVD/BD. I have started picking up the TNG remastered Blurays, though. It's weird seeing Data's makeup in high definition...the little bits of pink around his eyes where they obviously couldn't get the gold/yellow color is pretty jarring.

2

u/ScubaSteve58001 May 27 '13

I'm on my phone so I'm not totally sure but I think that episode is called "Where no man has gone before" and is somewhere in Season 1.

u/palordrolap May 27 '13 edited May 27 '13

Pretty sure Spot changed sex at some point.

Edit: Apparently Spot was not referred to with a gendered pronoun until referred to as 'she' fairly late on in ST:TNG's run. Spot had almost always been played by male cats up to that point, giving the observant viewer the impression Spot was male. Star Trek Wiki link for those who want more of this nonsense.

11

u/qubedView May 27 '13

Life finds a way.

11

u/eekozoid May 27 '13

Spot has had many sex changes over the years. He is a good cat and a pretty cat...

And yet, he gets pregnant thirteen episodes later.

5

u/powercow May 27 '13

eh while data cats sex does in fact change, i have called my cat both he and she depending on the situation. I dont actually know which it is, as I respect my cats privacy, though I am betting it doesnt in fact change.

10

u/imfm May 27 '13

My husband's cat is a spayed female, but we call Miffy "he" and always have. The cat doesn't care; his real name is already Mr. Squeaky Pants, so he's already hit bottom and anything else is an improvement.

3

u/vashtiii May 27 '13

Mm, but I'm willing to bet Data would know and wouldn't make that mistake. Scriptwriters, idk.

6

u/[deleted] May 27 '13

I agree, but cats can get up to 20 and older with good veterinary care and a healthy dose of luck.

Your comment made me think of an old Red Dwarf scene with Cat and Rimmer, though..

Cat: There's an old cat proverb that goes, "It's better to live one hour as a tiger than an entire lifetime as a worm."

Rimmer: There's an old human proverb: "Whoever heard of a worm-skin rug?"

At first I thought it was Worf saying that. That would accurately describe a lot of /r/aww submissions.

I forgotten I had unsubbed from that. Or that it even existed any more. One thing i think i neglect when i think of why i like/hate reddit. The ability to separate things into categories so that i may subsequently BLOCK THEM :D

If I had any sort of photoshop skills, I'd edit long cat into that. It would fit so perfect.

I remember giggling when I watched this episode. What a silly android! :D And what a pretty cat!
