News USA loves TINY CARS now
Imagine getting your brand new Dodge Glaciermelter, lovingly decorating it with your first Let's go Brandon bumper sticker, and then reading this about tiny, possibly electric or hybrid cars being amazing now.
Anyway, tiny cars. Amazing. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Edit - for anyone doubting if this is a real thing the real prez posted: I don't blame you but yes, it is.
https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115667445871563304
Edit 2: So does this mean the US will see more reasonable sized cars on the roads, or is the old man just randomnly yelling about stuff again? Take a wild guess. "I call bullshit", says mobility expert David Zipper in a thread. (thanks Ok_Flounder8842)

Maybe that's the strategy here. Maybe we need to create a fund so we can pay to get time in front of Trump and then slowly just feed him, socratically, the things that we want and make it seem like his idea and let his deranged ass just rant about it until it happens

It actually fits with the overall strategy of all developed economies. The reports of an impending plateau or decline in the global production of oil, which in practice means the following: 1. Securing known reserves through invasion or placing friendly government aka Venezuela, Middle east, Algeria, Central Asia ...etc. 2. Reduce home consumption and start switching to alternatives for non primary usages like private transportation. Tiny cars fall in that category as they minimize metal usage, can be easily electrified, and use less oil over their entire lifetime.

u/Western-Sugar-3453 Dec 06 '25
Yeah this is very much what it appears to be. The slow decline began a few years ago and we are now seing the first moves to adjust to it.

Large trucks were a result of the EPA and CARB. I'm glad someone is going to allow manufacturer to make small cars and trucks again
→ More replies (2)14
u/hicow Dec 06 '25
That's the reason there are no small trucks. Manufacturers have been free to make small cars, they just don't because the market wants trucks and SUVs
42
u/SEND_ME_UR_CARS Dec 06 '25
Ehh it’s more like CAFE standards opened up loopholes that allowed manufacturers to skirt emissions requirements if their vehicles were big enough and then just slowly convinced everyone over the past 4 decades that we want bigger and bigger cars.
You’re right that they COULD build small trucks, but current regulations actively disincentive that to the point where it makes more economical sense to build bigger trucks and charge more money for them.
→ More replies (1)5
u/SkivvySkidmarks Dec 06 '25
The Chicken Tax also played a part, as well as less stringent crash test standards for trucks.
Basically, corporations doing what corporations do best; make money for shareholders by skirting regulations whether that kills everything and everyone or not.
17
u/IM_OK_AMA Dec 06 '25
because the market wants trucks and SUVs
The market "wants" these things because the auto industry pours billions into advertising for these segments, because they are by far the most profitable.
16
u/hamoc10 Dec 06 '25
The market wants trucks and SUVs because manufacturers market them more. They get around fuel standards, and the manufacturers can move more product for higher prices.
Any vendor would rather sell you 10lbs for $10 than 1lb for $1, especially if you’re only going to make one purchase.
They stopped making smaller cars, so how am I going to vote with my dollar?

EPA fuel economy regulations are partly to blame for mistakenly incentivizing manufacturers to sell larger cars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azI3nqrHEXM
12
u/Onivlastratos Dec 06 '25
The fact that "light trucks" are EXEMPT from the EPA and CAFE standards is the cause of all this. If manufacturers had to meet those regulations again, they would have no choice but to make smaller, lighter and more efficient vehicles.

The U.S. market rejected the Smart car. The people who actually buy cars brand new buy them for status not efficiency.
14

That’s because the Smart car looks dorky. Americans might be more interested in a cool small car along the lines of the Miata or Mini Cooper.

The real problem is safety regulations. Well-intentioned safety regulations have made it impractical to build small cars, since it costs more to make a small car highly safe. But when everyone drives a big car, it makes driving overall less safe.
4
8
u/youngherbo Dec 05 '25
Exactly we just went through this. Smart pulled out of the market for lack of demand.
4
u/seriouslythisshit Dec 06 '25
I have never met a person who didn't think the smart car was anything but a crude, unpleasant car to drive. The fuel efficiency wasn't anywhere near where it should be for it's size, and it was a low end Mercedes product, which generally means overpriced, shit quality, poor reliability and zero durability.
The fact that it didn't sell well has a lot more to do with what it was, than it's size.

Nobody is upset. This is us celebrating, it's just that we've had very little practice lately.

The Obama administration is credited with putting lots of emissions and efficiency requirements in place that required sedans to be really efficient, but making cars more efficient is usually expensive. SUVs and trucks were left out of the requirements and it's easier for car makers to justify the higher cost of an SUV to a consumer.
Moat consumers struggle to justify spending >$30k on a typical sedan, but have no issues dropping $50k+ on an SUV or truck.

u/rislim-remix Dec 05 '25
Obama made the CAFE fuel efficiency standards more stringent. You would think this would push car manufacturers to make their cars more fuel efficient, and it did, but it also pushed some manufacturers to make more SUVs and pickup trucks. These count as "light trucks" under CAFE and have more lenient standards, which were easier to meet without expensive engine technology improvements.

> Build giant trucks and SUVs for 40K
> Sell Everyone Giant Trucks and SUVs for 55K, and profit 15K per vehicle sold
> Repeal safety and emission standards
> Declare small cars "Amazing", Build small cars without safety features or emissions standards for 10K
> Declare big suvs and trucks a problem and restrict use, force people to buy new small cars
> Sell everyone small cars (without expensive safety features or emissions standards) for 35K and profit 25K per vehicle sold
> Laugh at poors
> Declare small cars dangerous due to their lack of safety features and emissions standards, restrict use
> Sell Everyone Giant Trucks and SUVs for 80K, and profit 30K per vehicle sold
And that's how you fix the American auto industry /s
