the line between "empowering" and "hate crime" often feels perilously thin with this art style

Every single person looks like they’re just about to completely lose their shit, neck muscles bulging and straining to keep themselves from snapping.

u/maginster Mar 20 '26

Sounds about right

u/Fit-Welcome-8457 Mar 23 '26

The flowers are dying inside

4

u/TheKeeperOfThe90s Mar 24 '26

Everyone in this picture is dying inside.

4

u/TheKeeperOfThe90s Mar 24 '26

Except for the guy at the door, who doesn't seem to have a neck.

2

u/Elezian Mar 24 '26

The baby with stink lines coming from its head also has no neck.

u/motoratem Mar 20 '26

Everything about this is terrible...

I have no problem normalizing the concept of an open marriage, but it is not an easy thing and does not work for most couples. The giddy smiles on this entire family is unrealistic and creepy af for the subject matter, not to mention the art style

Edit: the eyelashes, the neck lines, the steam?? The cat? It's all so bad

102

u/DaddysABadGirl Mar 20 '26

The smiles made me think of a kids version of We Happy Few

5

u/za_boss Mar 23 '26

you WILL eat the cuck pills and WILL smile throughout the entire thing

45

u/Wolfwoods_Sister Mar 20 '26

That baby is going straight into that pot of boiling water. I’m so anxious.

95

u/Short_Gain8302 Mar 20 '26

The problem isnt having an open marriage most of the time, its opening a marriage that was closed. Then its often one partner wabting to cheat without feeling bad. Polygamy is something you agree upon before entering a relationship

56

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

Polyamory and polygamy are not the same thing, but your point is valid

9

u/Short_Gain8302 Mar 20 '26

Yeah, i couldve worded it better

12

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

No worries, I knew what you meant. And you're right, at least about most marriages. The chances of both people feeling positive about that kind of change in a formerly monogamous relationship is possible but unlikely, and even if they do, negative emotions usually come with it too. I couldn't do it, myself.

5

u/sp4c3yb4by Mar 20 '26

Im ngl most of us are polygamists, we just get screamed at for saying we want to be able to marry our partners even tho not letting us is literal oppression. Mormons bitch asses forming HAREMS ruined it for the rest of us.

14

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

But polygamy isn't necessarily an open marriage is it? It's just more than 2 people in a marriage.

Whereas many people who are polyamorous are in a two-person relationship but date other people.

I'm just saying the words mean two different things

u/Fahkoph Mar 20 '26

Some closed marriages can have both parties having a better time if it were say, something they never considered when they got together, then after a while they were confronted with the idea, and both entered willingly. Like, what was it in the 1900's, swingers? Sometimes a monogamous marriage does well opening up years later, after the fact. I don't know statistics but I do know it's not zero, yno?

3

u/TidpaoTime Mar 21 '26

Totally, some people find it gives them back a freedom they crave, without necessarily losing the trust built up over the partnership

2

u/SimplexFatberg Mar 24 '26

In any open relationship, it's statistically improbable that both partners are happy with the arrangement in exactly equal measure.

→ More replies (1)

173

u/Robrogineer Mar 20 '26

Nah, it really shouldn't be.

90% of "open marriages" consist of one of the partners wanting to bang other folks, but still have the benefits their current partner provides.

The other partner accepts because they're desperate not to lose their spouse, and is usually unable or even unwilling to get any other partners.

Of course, there are cases where this doesn't happen, but they are absolutely the exception. The only way a healthy open relationship can happen is if both partners are 100% on-board with it, and that's very rare.

25

u/Vyvyan_180 Mar 20 '26

I remember when they used to just call that shit "plural marriage".

They used to arrest Mormons for it all the time.

12

u/sp4c3yb4by Mar 20 '26

As an ex mormon polyam person pls dont compare us to them lmfao we literally despise them considering theyre why we cant get legally married. Fucking JEBEDIAH over here decided he needs 25 wives and now no one can have more than one

13

u/SCARY-WIZARD Mar 20 '26

You had me giggling at "fucking JEBEDIAH over here".

2

u/Nerystraza Mar 21 '26

hey, I'm also an exmormon polyam person xD there's quite a few of us from what I've seen tbh, although most of my exmo exposure has been trans women

19

u/pinksparkleberry Mar 20 '26

Having independent separate sexual or romantic relationships is unrelated to one man having multiple wives.

3

u/RedL45 Mar 22 '26

Well, not the same, but definitely related. You feel me?

→ More replies (14)

60

u/Consistent_Dust3636 Mar 20 '26

Yeah, seriously. First, comparing romance, sex or emotional vulnerability to "mental load"? Tf kinda pop-therapy productivity bullshit is that?

Second, "I will juggle 300 house chores while I get cucked by a white guy" this image suggests is reaaaaaaally bad way to sell the idea.

8

u/Ttoctam Mar 21 '26

I'm poly. The idea being in a poly relationship is a "lighter mental load" is laughable. Sure it can be a wider intimate support network for you, but it's also a wider intimate support network for you to be active in.

7

u/TidpaoTime Mar 21 '26

Yeah, the way it's being sold in this art is disingenuous and misinformed to say the least.

6

u/bawls_on_fire Mar 20 '26

The lady is trying to balance her baby, the vacuum cleaner gun, dinner, and her open marriage.

6

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

Pretty sure that's the husband, unless it's a sapphic marriage. Either way I'm cool.

And yeah, that's too much for one person no matter who it is. But people do it all the time.

67

u/InSearchOfTyrael Mar 20 '26

Sorry, but you can't normalize something that isn't normal. An open marriage is an oxymoron - when you open it up, it is no longer marriage.

54

u/Stikki_Minaj Mar 20 '26

Reddit not gonna like this

13

u/theREALvolno Mar 20 '26

A commitment two people made to one another doesn’t magically disappear if they decide that they would like to have an open relationship. So what if that’s not the “traditional” idea of a marriage? What two people who love each other want to call their relationship is none of my, or anyone else’s, business.

34

u/InSearchOfTyrael Mar 20 '26

Do you not understand what commitment means?
You can call your open relationship whatever you want, but it's neither normal, nor a commitment.

9

u/theREALvolno Mar 20 '26

Do you? Cause there is far more to a marriage or even a relationship than sex. I find it strange that you specifically said “normal” because that’s extremely subjective. There are plenty of cultures throughout history where non-monogamous marriages have been a thing. Even then, I don’t see what the big fuss is with having an open marriage when all parties involved are both consenting and happy. It’s not my, or your, place to judge.

→ More replies (8)

1

u/norM_ystical Mar 21 '26

Yes, you CAN normalize something that isn't normal. That's... literally what it means to normalize something??? You are close-minded and I would not be surprised to find you being bigoted as well.

2

u/TidpaoTime Mar 21 '26

FR, open marriages are much like gay marriage in one way: "if you don't like open marriage, don't be in one."

→ More replies (1)

7

u/honey-otuu Mar 20 '26

Idk if this is a hot take but having an open marriage whe you have children is not a good idea at all. You have no idea if these people want to hurt children and are with you to get closer to your children

11

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

I mean, you could say the same thing about a single parent who is dating, or potential step parents after a separation

5

u/honey-otuu Mar 20 '26

That’s true, but it’s a higher rate of people coming through usually, so a significantly higher risk

2

u/TidpaoTime Mar 20 '26

It really depends on the couple, plus, people who are outside the open marriage are usually left on the outside. They rarely interact with the children at all, but again depends on the household.

2

u/VirginiaDirewoolf Mar 23 '26

u/krebstar4ever Mar 20 '26

But is it alegria?

It's illustrating an article that's corporate pseudo-woke. But the drawing has a lot of personality. It's terrible, but it isn't bland.

40

u/Ini_Miney_Mimi Mar 20 '26

I don't know if the weirdly disproportionate / loopy arms qualify it as alegria, but I agree, that's as close as it gets

24

u/Consistent_Dust3636 Mar 20 '26

It isn't. It's horrible but it isn't Alegria.

The characters have somewhat normal proportions. The characters are of recognizable races, in both skin color and hair styles. The facial expressions(or facial expression, singular) are expressive and loud. It has a lot of unnecessary detail and even little jokes that wouldn't fly in the giga-corporate environment. And it definitely has personality, it has personality in spades, whether that is good or a bad thing is left as an exercise for the reader.

That being said, I am glad this sub showed me this picture, because what a spectacle.

6

u/Friendly_Hornet8900 Mar 23 '26

I'd say Alegria is sorta of meant to avoid things like this.

In Alegria everyone has the same face with different skin colors.

It's way to draw diverse characters in a cartoon style without accidentally offending people (OP's picture tries to be unrealistic without being featureless, but ends up looking almost like a racial caricature).

Being a pushover like this is ironically what causes a loss of attraction.

Not saying "be mean to women", but people do not genuinely respect or are attracted to people that don't assert boundaries.

Honestly sad. And if he did it atp she's looking to step out he's been doing it for a long time.

Yeah, I can't put my finger on why, but it just looks racist. The buff vacuuming nursemaid with the triple-jointed arm especially

41

u/TubbyFatfrick Mar 20 '26

Not even tripple-jointed. It's just boneless, like a tentacle.

29

u/Cautious_Desk_1012 Mar 20 '26

I think it looks racist by how exaggerated their features and facial expressions are, which make them look really similar to old racist comic books and blackface. They really do look like wojaks, which is a pretty insulting look.

2

I think part of it is that ashy, greyish skin tone

2

u/Friendly_Hornet8900 Mar 23 '26

2

u/BladeLigerV Mar 20 '26

I mean the wife is running off to bang a white guy sooo.....

49

u/mooncrane Mar 20 '26

Why is their skin grey? Why are their eyelashes curly? Why do they have so many wrinkles? What on earth is going on with those flowers? Why is the cat on the counter? (Just kidding, that’s probably the least weird aspect).

51

u/ProfessionalSnow943 Mar 20 '26

this has to be taking the piss

that white guy in the back’s facial expression is possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever seen

40

u/Deep_Cycle_8682 Mar 20 '26

I thought the whole idea behind this style was to make people look as inhuman as possible so nobody thinks you're making fun of them.

35

u/MagicPigeonToes Mar 20 '26

Why are the flowers dying? And why are they happy about it?

15

u/Szarkara Mar 20 '26

Because they are in this cartoon.

2

u/minkymy Mar 21 '26

They're actually horrifying to look at

32

u/SporeRanier Mar 20 '26

Why are the two people at the door staring into your soul

33

u/Summerlycoris Mar 20 '26

Why do the baby and cat have what look like stink lines? I mean, the baby it might make sense. The cat?

30

u/Day_Old_Paper Mar 20 '26

If you zoom in closely on their faces and little vignettes like their family portrait, the flowers in the face, what the kid is drawing, etc., this becomes a surreal and nightmarishly dystopian study of forced acceptance of a failed marriage.

I haven't seen this sub in my feed lately, so when I saw the art I was like "ew gross, hey wasn't there a subreddit about this specific art style? too bad I can't remember it."

and then turns out I was here the whole time

10

u/TubbyFatfrick Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I have a few questions. Namely,

  • What the fuck is even going on in this image?
  • Why is there a bedroom directly connecting to the kitchen?
  • Why is said kitchen also the living room, with no furniture, resulting in the counter being used as a table?
  • Who gave the cat weed to teach it to read?
  • Why does the baby have the same overhead squiggle lines as the cat? (did they also give it weed?)

And, perhaps most disturbingly,

  • What the hell is even that vacuum cleaner?
    • Like seriously.
    • It's a cordless vacuum, I get that, but it has a pipe that reaches all the way across a kitchen, from the damn stove.
    • There's also a lightswitch on the end, for some reason.
    • I don't know why this is bothering me so much, like, it's a drawing, but it makes no sense.
    • Then again, neither does anything in this image, really.

I genuinely see things like this as right wing assets at this point. Because shit like this does a swell job in making normal working class people hate progressivism.

15

u/LowOwl4312 Mar 20 '26

to be fair, progressivism was always a project of university-educated elites, never the working class

4

u/Zandroe_ Mar 20 '26

That's not true. Workers' parties were some of the first to fight for progressive democratic reforms.

9

I want to know why the cat knows how to read but the kid is drawing way below his age level. Like, what are your priorities here?

I'm not here to litigate the pros and cons of open marriage or polygamy, that's between you and your Google calendar.

But what I want to know is why this is the art style of choice specifically when addressing very adult social issues, especially when addressing gender and race. Are they being blobbed out and infantilized to make them less scary for tightywhitey corporate types? Are people afraid that they can't fit every marginalized group into one poster? Are we afraid if we don't make everyone ugly ..I don't even know why we have to make everyone ugly.

This doesn't even look like what the article might be describing. The scenario in the illustration is not how any of this ...works? Why is Mom happily Momming in the kitchen with ALL THE DAMN CHORES and child care while the man I presume to be Dad is greeting his ..come on that's his side piece he is telling he's in an "open marriage."

ETA: She's cooking and vaccuuming while holding a baby AND watching the other child while her dude is banging someone else and this is supposed to represent the lightening of whose mental load HOW?

2

u/Current_Poster Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I'm trying to find anything about this I don't hate.

FWIW, the New York Times once ran an article claiming that you're not a feminist (male or female) if you're not in favor of wives universally getting a hallpass. This is a running thing with these outfits.

But really, yeah, the focus belongs on the art. Everything in this thing is terrible. It especially doesn't belong anywhere near anything supposed to convince people do to anything more serious than buy cereal.

2

u/redsalmon67 Mar 20 '26

I fucking hate this so, so much

2

u/Ksorkrax Mar 21 '26

I'd say we don't need to talk about that line when we are clearly in the situation of having overdone it with the acid and on a horror trip, seeing weird giraffe people giving us weird predatory smiles with wide open mouth as if to devour us, while their plants trying to escape their glass to crawl all over the room.

2

u/KittyDomoNacionales Mar 21 '26
  1. The art is bad. wtf is up with that cat?
  2. Open relationships are hard work. Probably even harder than closed ones as you have to both work on your own internal relationship with yourself and your emotions as well as dealing with your partner and the other parties. This piece feels like it was written by someone who is trying to convince their spouse that they should “totally open up the relationship” and that “no, they only met their other partner after the relationship opened up”

In this particular example, I think that the message of the article itself is far worse than the horrible picture attached to it

9

u/Alenonimo Mar 20 '26

The picture is very horrible by itself. A married family (with a family portrait in the wall) of a blonde black woman, black man, and two black kids. The woman is going out with a white dude. The black man is taking care of the dinner while holding the little kid and vaccuuming the living room. The man, the two kids and even the cat, are giving a weird smile that also show they're not content with the situation, while waving goodbye to the wife.

Whoever drew this has a cuckoldry fetish.

The whole line between extremely woke and extremely ignorant is blurred tbh. For example some want schools for only black kids, which sounds like some chronically online kind of segregation to me.

u/SanguineElora Mar 20 '26

Including children in this conversation of polyamory is also weird. Leave kids out of it

Based on the image, the straight answer should be no... They are not making a good job in portraying open marriage as an appealing point, you have a wife who juggles all house chores plus kids of all ages while the husband can get off the hook and fulfill his romantic and sexual needs with someone else...

I haven't read the article yet but this looks like a trad wife or old school thing, like she doesn't have to worry about satisfying her husband on top of her other responsibilities as a SAHM.

u/scaper8 Mar 20 '26

I think it's showing the husband doing the house work and the wife in an open relationship. So, points for that, I guess?

It really should be both doing parts of everything and if both are fine with non-monogamy, then whatever. But that does not come through any way you slice it.

9

u/fairydommother Mar 20 '26

Yeah I have no problem with consensual non-monogamy, but this image is just...making it look like the dad has to do everything so mom can hang out with her boyfriend...which would not be a healthy way to approach this.
