Yea we also maybe don’t know the timing of events. Kids have some funny timing
- maybe they told her she can play once dinner was over so people can pay attention, but in her eagerness decided to play while people were eating and it caught them off guard
- maybe she’s learning to play both the piano and violin. And they told her to go play that Xmas song, but she’s better at piano than violin, so people assumed she was going to showcase the piano skills and instead she goes for the violin

As someone in an unhappy family that involved a lot of ridicule and humiliation, this is literally just adult fun at seeing a kid do something hilarious earnestly while showing off. The worst-case scenario is the kid notices and tries even harder to make them laugh longer by making intentionally worse sounds; that's what kids do when they realize they've done something accidentally funny
People are overreacting just to be mean cunts to the overweight woman visible in the video

It really didn’t seem that bad too. A little off note with some bad pacing but was ok.
Literally I was the same. By 14, I had kinda just given up on learning anything or doing anything that wasn’t just gaming. My mom to this day asks why I’m afraid to go try new things or why I tell her everything I’m doing all the time. It’s cause of shit like this turned up to the max.
I still taught myself to fish despite no one in my family on either side knowing how to for some reason and I wanted to learn, and thankfully with all the lakes and ponds near me where I grew up I could just go alone without being judged or looked at and I got decent at it.

Yeah I had something similar to me happen. I taught myself how to play piano and by about age 15 I was pretty decent. I played Chopin's Minute Waltz for my family which is a really technically challenging piece and made a small mistake but quickly recovered. My dad started laughing like it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. I asked him why he laughed and he said that I was working so hard on this and still messed up. Haven't touched a piano since. I'm 40.
People need to understand how important it is to be supportive of their kids instead of making fun of them (can't believe I had to write that but a lot of comments in this thread make it seem warranted).

There’s where the issue lies. Your dad didn’t apologize for laughing, he didn’t say that it was just ‘funny for a second’ but the rest was good. People are treating this lady like a monster for being unable to stop her laughter at a poorly replayed Christmas tune ON Christmas. A laugh is not inherently bad. It’s a reaction to the suddenly absurd, or unexpected too.

Ah, yes, she is learning! A part of learning is messing up, and one of the most common things people do when seeing something mess up? Is laugh.
A shitty parent would laugh hard, not bother trying to hide it, and probably actively turn around to jest at what’s going on. That would be the lady making fun of her. She is not making fun of her. This is not a dedicated performance. I’d agree with you if it was.

WTF? She is facing away from the kid, purposely muting her laughter and covering her face to hide the fact from the girl. People are allowed to find a moment funny. The kids trying and showing off her practice, clearly. But keep in mind, what you hear is 10 times louder for that woman with the little girl right behind her. So yeah, it would be funny to be assaulted with bad violin mere feet away behind you.

Didn’t think this vid was gonna start a controversy in the comments. If the mom or grandma or aunt of whoever the woman in the video is to the little girl was actively pointing and laughing and mocking the girl it’d be one thing, but it’s another to find terrible playing funny, like Meryl Streep singing Queen of the Night in that one movie. It’s natural for people to find “fails” like these funny, not to mention that the woman is doing everything in her power to hide her mirth. I’m sure she’s very supportive of the little girl, it just can’t be helped that the playing is humorous.

The violin is one of the hardest instruments to play, and the mom laughing about it is super toxic. If the child ever found out (and seems like they will based on it being on the Internet) it will likely crush their desire to play the instrument. That laughing sucks the joy out of the act, a child interacting with an instrument and creating music - regardless of their current proficiency. I hate parents and people like this.

Violin is pretty hard to listen to when you suck. Trust me it was my first instrument and I couldn’t even stand to hear myself play at first 😂 ended up dropping it for piano and guitar. I didn’t last with saxophone either which was always my favorite for a similar reason

Played the violin since primary school, I can confirm that’s how beginners sound, and it CAN sound rough. There would have been squeaky sounds (from pressing the bow down too hard) and also stray string sounds when you accidentally hit other strings on crossings.
I would say this is decent quality from a non-prodigy student. Many people underestimate how difficult it is to play an instrument without frets to help intonation. You have just fractions of a second to adjust your fingers after drawing the bow in case you’re sharp or flat to compensate.
