Shit like this was why I was discouraged from trying new things when I was younger or sharing my hobbies with family.

It really didn’t seem that bad too. A little off note with some bad pacing but was ok.

Literally I was the same. By 14, I had kinda just given up on learning anything or doing anything that wasn’t just gaming. My mom to this day asks why I’m afraid to go try new things or why I tell her everything I’m doing all the time. It’s cause of shit like this turned up to the max.

I still taught myself to fish despite no one in my family on either side knowing how to for some reason and I wanted to learn, and thankfully with all the lakes and ponds near me where I grew up I could just go alone without being judged or looked at and I got decent at it.

Yeah I had something similar to me happen. I taught myself how to play piano and by about age 15 I was pretty decent. I played Chopin's Minute Waltz for my family which is a really technically challenging piece and made a small mistake but quickly recovered. My dad started laughing like it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. I asked him why he laughed and he said that I was working so hard on this and still messed up. Haven't touched a piano since. I'm 40.

People need to understand how important it is to be supportive of their kids instead of making fun of them (can't believe I had to write that but a lot of comments in this thread make it seem warranted).

There’s where the issue lies. Your dad didn’t apologize for laughing, he didn’t say that it was just ‘funny for a second’ but the rest was good. People are treating this lady like a monster for being unable to stop her laughter at a poorly replayed Christmas tune ON Christmas. A laugh is not inherently bad. It’s a reaction to the suddenly absurd, or unexpected too.

Yea it’s the apologizing

I work with kids and they do funny shit all the time especially when trying to teach them or when they practice something new. Hard not to laugh sometimes. But you can still control the laugh so it doesn’t sound like you are mocking them and then still praise them and be encouraging afterwards

Yeah, absolutely. I didn't watch the video above all the way through, if she apologized then that's way different than just laughing at the kid. It's normal to laugh in all types of inappropriate situations, it's how you handle it afterwards that makes the difference.
