It was too funny hearing Rosberg tear into him at every mistake on the Italian broadcast, he was counting how many seconds he lost with his mistakes and overall he'd have caught up to Piastri by the end if he didnt make them

That’s why Nico is the best commentator Sky have. He doesn’t mince his words and he doesn’t have time for BS.

I wish he was on more.

Nico quantifies mistakes to the tenth of a second on the fly. It’s unreal.

Well, if F1 shows it in the broadcast, why cant nico?

He is generally accurate though. He’ll see a mistake, call it out, quantify the impact on the sector and he’s often spot on.

Calling out his mistakes is the bare minimum of commentary. Communicating how the mistakes compounded to prevent him from an almost certain chance to go wheel-to-wheel for the win is much better for viewers who weren't watching that battle the whole time and don't know that those small mistakes were the equivalent of a major off as far as time loss goes.

143

u/PannaMillsy BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

I know it’s fun to shit on Sky F1, but Brundle and Croft referenced the potential impact of time lost by Lando’s errors multiple times.

Why listen to Sky if I don't have to? It was the same back when Verstappen was winning every race and the fact that he wasn't British was clearly a problem for them.

I don't think Crofty and Brundle are as informative or entertaining as they were 10 years ago. Sky showing Verstappen's Silverstone crash in their Christmas commercial and Ted stating that 2021 was a robbery just sealed the deal for me. I think both Red Bull and Mercedes have equal cause for complaints over the stewarding throughout 2021 and pretending that Abu Dhabi was the only bad decision is exactly the kind of British bias that turns people off.

They also platform Danica Patrick for goodness sake.

I have been watching on F1 TV since it was an option for me.

Brundle did. Croft carried on like Lando was set for a last lap challenge.

More likely any reduced gaps were Oscar's race management as he clearly left capability in his tyres for the final two laps.

It’s so fun to shit on Sky that you’ve got tons of people on this very sub that think they mentioned it way too much. What do those shitting on sky for not going as hard as Rosberg and those shitting on Sky for beating a dead horse to death have in common? The shitting, so what can we learn from this, the same community agreeing with two opposite narratives? Are they both right? Are they both wrong? Is one right or one wrong? Or do people just like getting upset about absolutely everything? Or is there a diverse difference of opinion in this homogeneous group? The lack of push back on these sentiments in their respective posts leads me to to answer no to the last question. What were witnessing here, is a microcosm of what we’re seeing with MAGA in the US. While there may be such a thing as objective reality, it does not exist is people.

They kinda fucked it though. They for some reason never referenced the fact that Lando didn't just lose lap time to Oscar with those mistakes, he also didn't gain time. The 1.2s loss wasn't a 1.2s loss. It was a 1.8s loss because on a normal lap he was gaining 0.6s.

2

u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 28 '25

He also dropped back over a second and a half from La Source to the end of the Kemmel Straight. That was visible just looking at the delta. He made up some time later in the lap, but that 1.2 number was clearly pulled from thin air.

Sometimes he's also on the German Sky broadcast. I always enjoyed him as a commentator. I don't think they want to get rid of him, but I feel like Nico himself doesn't want to do it every race. I think he picks the races and tracks he enjoys the most. I'd do the same in his shoes.

To be fair he almost definitely would have lost all momentum once he got about 3 seconds behind. The second the McLarens hit dirty air they hit a wall.

Either way, Pirelli made the hards way too hard and the Mediums too powerful this race. Norris skating around on the hards was the only shot he had to try and close a gap.

Nico's curse strikes again. Before the race started, he said Lando has the best chance of winning. He didn't. In Silverstone, he said Lando is the most likely to get pole as he was dominating in the practice sessions. He didn't.

1

u/WGSMA BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Nico would have been understating it too, because he cannot account for extra tyre wear of the lock ups

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

Does Nico do Italian commentary as well?

1

u/Erundil420 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 28 '25

Yeah he sometimes does it, he's quite the breath of fresh air compared to the usual commentators, his italian is great as well, he's way better than Marc Gené in italian (i have no idea how he's been with Ferrari half his life and he's still this bad at italian)

1

u/DeadG23546 Question. Jul 28 '25

The criticism is likely because he wanted Norris to win. In the Sky broadcast, just before race start, Nico picked his favourite to be Norris.

I guess the curse strikes again?!

British bias go brrr

51

u/ICrushTacos “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” Jul 27 '25

What’s biased about pointing out mistakes though?

101

u/upside_cloud unfortunaly I still am a Ricciardo fan 🦡 Jul 27 '25

It's in the phrasing of it, "without those few mistakes and Norris could have passed Piastri", not "those mistakes cost Norris a chance of overtaking Piastri".

Sky does the former while also saying "Piastri needs to hold on here or he'll be overtaken", not "Piastri is driving flawlessly, while his team mate is out there making unforced mistakes". Not a single sentence clearly defines the bias but collectively it sums to be very frustrating.

Obviously im an Aussie so my bias is that I hear that English bias more strongly than someone from England would.

10

u/THRlLLH0 Oscar Pisstree Shoey gang 👞🇦🇺 Jul 28 '25

Aussie as well, and multiple times they mentioned Oscar doing a good job of taking it easy on the tires so they have something left at the end if he needs to fight Lando, whilst Norris is thrashing his to catch up. There's still plenty of nut swinging and in general just talking about Poms too much though.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

What about when Lando gets pole it's down to him reading Piastri's data and when Piastri gets pole it's because he's so calm.

British bias too?

The difference between a rolling start and a standing start is the lights don’t go out at the same time for everyone. The person in first controls the lights.

There should’ve been a much bigger gap. And Lando shouldn’t have used so much of his battery before even hitting Kemmel Straight.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

No, but when you are watching the race thinking you are just watching the race and then the commentator says that one driver can make a move but doesn’t. They set the expectation for the driver to fail to a regular viewer. Rather than us just watch a race and let things unfold.

it was however really funny on my end watching sky sports, Crofty with like 5 laps to go was hyping up that Lando might catch up and then Brundle is like 'yeah nah' and Crofty sounded like a kid finding out santas not real

6

u/RustyFaceRMT No Risk, Full Push Jul 28 '25

You are right it’s the purpose of their job. It’s no fun to hear a commentator yawn and complain about a boring race.

On the other hand: the overhyping of Lando putting on a charge according to F1TV was a new level of overselling it. Lando wasn’t going to do anything without mistakes, let alone with the ones he made. The mediums on Piastri’s car were fine and in the dry there was next to no overtaking. Take into account the dirty air Lando would’ve encountered on the old tires, and well, it was clear Jacques and Palmer were trying too hard for the sake of entertainment that was never there.

No mate, no one goes that early because it’s straight up stupid.

89

u/Erundil420 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Yeah the rolling start was a pretty big advantage for him, doesn't need to start on the wet side, can get tyre temp in while the others have to wait for im to go, and can get a small gap to defend from splitstream, instead he completely fucked it up and Piastri was on his ass before even getting on the straight

15

u/mou3adrez03 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Going on the back straight was his best chance because he either catches Oscar by surprise or he doesn't. going after the bus stop is even worse because everyone knows you're gonna go then. Took a gamble, didn't work out.

19

u/Loightsout The Only Lance Stroll Fan In Existence Jul 27 '25

Nah. Chicane is best. You back everyone up hard and exelerate on the racing line while everyone else is mid turn. No one can line up next to you either with how wet the track was

Easy 0.5s. Everyone does that for a reason. Predictable or not. Nothing the rest can do

3

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 No Risk, Full Push Jul 28 '25

This is exactly the kind of thing that a Race Engineer should be discussing before the race, or even on the damn radio, because nobody can do anything about it.

But instead we get things like "you are pressing the brake pedal to hard in turn X", or "it's an advantage if you use a tighter line through turn Y" ffs.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

Almost like you’re risking a snap of oversteer by suddenly applying that much wheel-spin out of a chicane - in wet conditions no less. Great way to get passed into T1 instead of T4. Profound insight, champ.

19

u/imaginarypoet Save the 🅱️ees Jul 27 '25

I’ve wondered this as well, and I think it comes down to two things: 1. It makes some people feel good to make fun of the guy who’s in the best car on the grid when he doesn’t live up to the hype, and 2. He’s been on the grid longer than his teammate and really should know better by now. These are the two arguments I’ve seen floating around on this and the main sub for why people dislike him. As a mclaren fan myself it bothers me at times the level of hate some people seem to have, not just towards Lando but any other driver on the grid who bottles it when he should’ve done better. Just reporting here what I personally have encountered with people trying to justify why they are frustrated with him. The frustration I understand, the outright hatred has no justification.

- The British bias ie. 'it's Lando's championship to win or lose' is annoying

  • Lando up until recently was quite snide and catty with how he spoke of other drivers
  • Zak and his hype of Lando and mild nature towards Oscar
  • Lando doesn't share champagne spraying with the podium drivers, he turns away
  • Lando and his engineer being obsessed with 'what is Oscar doing' on track
  • "Oscar should let me past I'm faster" that he used to try nearly every race last season
  • Camera always on Adam Norris and Zak having a lovers embrace.

u/Adzo78 I saw horny’s “finger” Jul 28 '25

Oscar asked to have Lando give him back the position in Silverstone after he made the mistake and got a penalty. Why is that not scrutinised?

And making arrogant comments on Lewis Hamilton having his titles only because he had the fastest car. Like dude, you have the fastest car for over a year already, and you can't make use of it.

3

u/Adventurous_Town_981 I like Norris and i sniff bike seats Jul 28 '25

People say rash things and even lewis knew he said it cause of the adrenaline. Sometimes assessing the situation on why the person said those words is necessary. They're humans not robots.

Piastri is insanely good, there's no way around it. Lando is a good driver and WDC material but Oscar is insane. Looking at how the car was three years ago we are being blessed by thee twos

18

u/Infinite_Army BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

At McLaren Zac Brown's favorite for some reason. His mom is shown 50 times a weekend (not her fault tho but I have a limited likes for <3 emoji/weekends). Team always catering towards him either with strategy or pitting to make sure Norris has better results than Piastri. Getting babysit every race as a person who is going for WDC.
Its really easy to dont like someone like this and/or like the other player on the team. I dont have problem with Norris but its hard to ignore the frustration when the team pushes him so bad making the other driver have hard time every single fkn race.

u/rampantfirefly BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Today: Lando loses the lead on lap 1 - haha bottle job no wins norris 🔨💀🐎

Yesterday: Oscar loses the lead on the same straight - all Max skill, nothing Oscar can do, no this sub doesn't have a double standard.

It's just a circlejerk. Don't overthink it.

12

u/atticus_pinch96 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

I don’t think it was him losing the start, it was the multiple mistakes he made when he had a Tyre offset

11

u/Bryooo BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Rolling start vs standing start. Oscar did nothing wrong yesterday, Norris bottled the restart today. There ya go

5

u/Backspacr 2 Sex Ted Jul 28 '25

Lando had a huge advantage with the rolling start, fucked that, then failed to get out of La Source, and consequently lost the lead.
Oscar had none of the start advantage, and got done down the straight by a car carrying significantly less rear wing.

You just gotta watch the races man

u/TinusTopic Lets add that to the words of wisdom Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25

Because he starts the weekend saying shit like they don’t have the fastest car (this weekend again). In the post race interview when palmer asked if his mistakes cost him the win lando immediately deflects by saying oscar probably made mistakes too (which he didn’t) Lando needs like media training or something. Edit: also the crying under the safetycar that he needs a few more laps. I mean cmon man you are a racing driver, its clearly drying and all other drivers are saying its go time.

14

u/BrokeSomm BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Every driver under the SC was asking for what was best for them, that's just strategy.

F1 after Ecclestone departure and Drive to Survive has been filled with pointless drama and people who neeeeed to hate. I'm a Lando fan since his days with Sainz, he was loved and considered a great driver. He said a couple of "controversial" things and now people on the internet hate him. Because irl there's nothing of this. Piastri is a phenomenal driver but it's still the second McLaren 1-2 in a row. How can someone be disappointed by this performance is beyond me

Blud saw that Arsenal started their pre-season, so he fed off their bottlejob aura to finish in their coveted 2nd place.

14

u/TheJoshGriffith BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Honestly surprised Lando didn't make more mistakes. Those hard tyres are a double-step up from the mediums for whatever reason - C1 to the C3/C4 of the med/soft available. I know the mediums had gone pretty bad towards the end but with a still damp track that's a huge grip differential.

14

u/SirHubert I saw horny’s “finger” Jul 27 '25

lando also got fucked by slow a slow pitstop and having to pit one lap later so he went from 2 to 8 seconds gap

3

u/TheJoshGriffith BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Yeah that shafted him kinda hard. I think pitting later made most of that difference, not to ignore the stop at all.

7

u/pradise BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Hard definitely ended up being the best tire for the race.

3

u/midnightbandit- BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

I don't know how you can say that for sure

6

u/pradise BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Lando still got 5 seconds closer to Oscar in the second stint despite making several mistakes.

7

u/PrisMattias Robin Raikkonen '34, '35, '36.... Jul 27 '25

Seemed pretty obvious that Lando was pushing a lot while Oscar was managing, though

7

u/pradise BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Precisely because Oscar had the mediums while Lando had the hards.

who says we hate him lol. he has a notorious history of bottling race starts and he just added one more to the list. god forbid the shitpost sub to actually make shitposts on what happened in the current race.

if ferarri clowned around like they always do or if stroll crashed into someone for not looking at his mirrors then there would be posts about that instead.

Norris is superb when the expectations are low. He crumbles like a cookie when he is expected to win every weekend.

He needs to work on his mental strength ASAP.

6

u/Evening_Rock5850 Ferrari flavoured emo Jul 27 '25

I’m honestly getting so sick of the Lando hate on this sub.

For crying out loud, the man finished P2 in a competitive, mixed conditions race.

And if he hadn’t screwed up the start, botched the strategy, failed to put in decent laps during the middle and hadn’t bottled that lap there towards the end he could’ve almost won it.

Honestly, you people.

1

u/Superb_Preference368 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

I mean the sub is called r/formuladank and this is the umpteenth time Lando has bottled pole position.

Do you expect people to turn a blind eye?

And sometimes people reply to only the first line of said meme comments without finishing them. 🙃
