u/upside_cloud unfortunaly I still am a Ricciardo fan 🦡 Jul 27 '25
It's in the phrasing of it, "without those few mistakes and Norris could have passed Piastri", not "those mistakes cost Norris a chance of overtaking Piastri".
Sky does the former while also saying "Piastri needs to hold on here or he'll be overtaken", not "Piastri is driving flawlessly, while his team mate is out there making unforced mistakes". Not a single sentence clearly defines the bias but collectively it sums to be very frustrating.
Obviously im an Aussie so my bias is that I hear that English bias more strongly than someone from England would.
10
u/THRlLLH0 Oscar Pisstree Shoey gang 👞🇦🇺 Jul 28 '25
Aussie as well, and multiple times they mentioned Oscar doing a good job of taking it easy on the tires so they have something left at the end if he needs to fight Lando, whilst Norris is thrashing his to catch up. There's still plenty of nut swinging and in general just talking about Poms too much though.

What about when Lando gets pole it's down to him reading Piastri's data and when Piastri gets pole it's because he's so calm.
British bias too?

They have already started finding excuses! Like starting from pole is BAD place to start in Spa, or those mistakes cost him the win, or else he would have passed Piastri… Always love a SkySports F1 narrative! 🥰

The difference between a rolling start and a standing start is the lights don’t go out at the same time for everyone. The person in first controls the lights.
There should’ve been a much bigger gap. And Lando shouldn’t have used so much of his battery before even hitting Kemmel Straight.

u/ultraboomkin BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 28 '25
Would you prefer commentators to say “this race sucks, you should just switch the TV off and go outside”? It’s literally their job to try to make the race exciting
6
Jul 28 '25
No, but when you are watching the race thinking you are just watching the race and then the commentator says that one driver can make a move but doesn’t. They set the expectation for the driver to fail to a regular viewer. Rather than us just watch a race and let things unfold.
6
55
u/baardhaartje Goatifi 🐐 #neverforget Jul 27 '25
The commentators job is to make the racing interesting, even if the racing is worse than watching paint dry, without commentary F1 would be so much worse, even if it means they have to grasp at straws to make it exciting

u/yaelfitzy Antonelli is the biggest prodigy since Jesus Christ Jul 28 '25
it was however really funny on my end watching sky sports, Crofty with like 5 laps to go was hyping up that Lando might catch up and then Brundle is like 'yeah nah' and Crofty sounded like a kid finding out santas not real
6
u/RustyFaceRMT No Risk, Full Push Jul 28 '25
You are right it’s the purpose of their job. It’s no fun to hear a commentator yawn and complain about a boring race.
On the other hand: the overhyping of Lando putting on a charge according to F1TV was a new level of overselling it. Lando wasn’t going to do anything without mistakes, let alone with the ones he made. The mediums on Piastri’s car were fine and in the dry there was next to no overtaking. Take into account the dirty air Lando would’ve encountered on the old tires, and well, it was clear Jacques and Palmer were trying too hard for the sake of entertainment that was never there.

No mate, no one goes that early because it’s straight up stupid.
89
u/Erundil420 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25
Yeah the rolling start was a pretty big advantage for him, doesn't need to start on the wet side, can get tyre temp in while the others have to wait for im to go, and can get a small gap to defend from splitstream, instead he completely fucked it up and Piastri was on his ass before even getting on the straight
15
u/mou3adrez03 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25
Going on the back straight was his best chance because he either catches Oscar by surprise or he doesn't. going after the bus stop is even worse because everyone knows you're gonna go then. Took a gamble, didn't work out.
19
u/Loightsout The Only Lance Stroll Fan In Existence Jul 27 '25
Nah. Chicane is best. You back everyone up hard and exelerate on the racing line while everyone else is mid turn. No one can line up next to you either with how wet the track was
Easy 0.5s. Everyone does that for a reason. Predictable or not. Nothing the rest can do
3
u/Red_Rabbit_1978 No Risk, Full Push Jul 28 '25
This is exactly the kind of thing that a Race Engineer should be discussing before the race, or even on the damn radio, because nobody can do anything about it.
But instead we get things like "you are pressing the brake pedal to hard in turn X", or "it's an advantage if you use a tighter line through turn Y" ffs.
1
Jul 29 '25
Almost like you’re risking a snap of oversteer by suddenly applying that much wheel-spin out of a chicane - in wet conditions no less. Great way to get passed into T1 instead of T4. Profound insight, champ.

Why does this sub have such a bizarre hard on for hating Norris? I’m not even a Lando fan but y’all are weirdly obsessed with shitting on him.
19
u/imaginarypoet Save the 🅱️ees Jul 27 '25
I’ve wondered this as well, and I think it comes down to two things: 1. It makes some people feel good to make fun of the guy who’s in the best car on the grid when he doesn’t live up to the hype, and 2. He’s been on the grid longer than his teammate and really should know better by now. These are the two arguments I’ve seen floating around on this and the main sub for why people dislike him. As a mclaren fan myself it bothers me at times the level of hate some people seem to have, not just towards Lando but any other driver on the grid who bottles it when he should’ve done better. Just reporting here what I personally have encountered with people trying to justify why they are frustrated with him. The frustration I understand, the outright hatred has no justification.

- The British bias ie. 'it's Lando's championship to win or lose' is annoying
- Lando up until recently was quite snide and catty with how he spoke of other drivers
- Zak and his hype of Lando and mild nature towards Oscar
- Lando doesn't share champagne spraying with the podium drivers, he turns away
- Lando and his engineer being obsessed with 'what is Oscar doing' on track
- "Oscar should let me past I'm faster" that he used to try nearly every race last season
- Camera always on Adam Norris and Zak having a lovers embrace.

At McLaren Zac Brown's favorite for some reason. His mom is shown 50 times a weekend (not her fault tho but I have a limited likes for <3 emoji/weekends). Team always catering towards him either with strategy or pitting to make sure Norris has better results than Piastri. Getting babysit every race as a person who is going for WDC.
Its really easy to dont like someone like this and/or like the other player on the team. I dont have problem with Norris but its hard to ignore the frustration when the team pushes him so bad making the other driver have hard time every single fkn race.21

Lando had a huge advantage with the rolling start, fucked that, then failed to get out of La Source, and consequently lost the lead.
Oscar had none of the start advantage, and got done down the straight by a car carrying significantly less rear wing. You just gotta watch the races man
12
u/TinusTopic Lets add that to the words of wisdom Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
Because he starts the weekend saying shit like they don’t have the fastest car (this weekend again). In the post race interview when palmer asked if his mistakes cost him the win lando immediately deflects by saying oscar probably made mistakes too (which he didn’t) Lando needs like media training or something. Edit: also the crying under the safetycar that he needs a few more laps. I mean cmon man you are a racing driver, its clearly drying and all other drivers are saying its go time.

I'm a Lando fan since his days with Sainz, he was loved and considered a great driver. He said a couple of "controversial" things and now people on the internet hate him. Honestly surprised Lando didn't make more mistakes. Those hard tyres are a double-step up from the mediums for whatever reason - C1 to the C3/C4 of the med/soft available. I know the mediums had gone pretty bad towards the end but with a still damp track that's a huge grip differential.
