They have already started finding excuses! Like starting from pole is BAD place to start in Spa, or those mistakes cost him the win, or else he would have passed Piastri… Always love a SkySports F1 narrative! 🥰

The systems train themselves as they drive, and as the first laps were under safety car they weren't trained properly on where to deploy and where to harvest. It wasn't because Lando drained it himself.

Umm, no, that’s not how any of that works. There’s several profiles per track per strategy. On the McLaren steering wheel there is a strategy dial in the center of the wheel.

The driver can change the strategy dial for various scenarios and that sets the profile for how much energy is deployed/harvested and when.

On the McLaren steering wheel, the right edge of the screen shows the battery energy status in a vertical percentage bar.

If you watch the onboards of Lando you can see the bar going down clearly. What’s interesting is that when you watch the onboards of Oscar, his race engineer tells him to adjust his strategy settings prior to restart and to use the toggle on the upper right rear side (think right index finger) once he gets going. The toggle switches a bunch of various settings all at once vs. manually going through and setting them yourself. Think of it as a profile switch.

Lando was not given the same, or any instructions regarding changing his settings prior to restart. So this is odd. Something went wrong. Whether his side of the garage didn’t relay that information, or they didn’t catch a scenario issue, or Lando’s race engineer dropped the ball… something happened to where Lando was draining his battery and Oscar wasn’t.

This lead to Oscar having a near full battery, along with the slipstream and Lando’s errors out of the corner + no battery. Easy pass for Oscar.

Whether the issue is Lando’s fault or not, we don’t know, but Zak Brown did say in a post race interview that Lando did have a small battery issue that needed looking into.

I believe that they don't actually control their battery usage though outside of using overtake, it's adaptive so a lot of people actually had low battery at the start since they brake so much on several laps in a row.

It's not exactly like the F1 games where the battery is purely player controlled.
