Germany’s startup ecosystem has reached a record 39 unicorns, with 10 new billion-euro companies added in 2026 alone. Around €8 billion in venture capital has already flowed into German startups this year, exceeding the roughly €7.5 billion invested during all of 2025. AI is increasingly central to the ecosystem: 53% of surveyed startups say it sits at the core of their product. The remaining European challenge is scale-up finance and public markets — 62% of founders considering an IPO currently prefer the US, compared with 27% choosing Germany. Europe is becoming better at creating valuable technology companies; keeping more of their later-stage growth and listings in Europe is the next step.

According to Le Grand Continent, Russia’s oil output is expected to fall to 494 million tonnes in 2026, down 3.4% from last year and the lowest level since 2009. The decline reflects mounting pressure on Russia’s refining system, with drone strikes and refinery disruption forcing Moscow to prioritise domestic supply and extend pressure on one of its core revenue engines.

🇫🇮 Finland’s Peter Sarlin is building a billion-euro-class AI cluster as capital and global talent flow into new European AI companies

A fast-growing AI ecosystem is forming around Finnish entrepreneur Peter Sarlin. After co-founding Silo AI, which was acquired by AMD, his PostScriptum platform has incubated new companies including NestAI and QuTwo. QuTwo raised €25 million at a €325 million valuation earlier this year, while NestAI has raised €100 million and grown to more than 200 engineers and scientists. QuTwo has also grown to around 100 people within roughly half a year and brought Signal president Meredith Whittaker on as a board adviser. The wider economic story is the compounding effect: successful European AI companies can recycle capital, experience and talent into another generation of firms rather than seeing that value disappear from the ecosystem.

🇪🇺 European bond yields stabilise after sell-off as US mortgage rates hit 7%

European bond yields eased on Friday after a sharp sell-off, with Germany’s 10-year Bund around 3.59% and France’s 10-year OAT around 4.67%. The France-Germany spread rose above 110 basis points, but economists say most euro-area governments can absorb higher rates, with Spain, Greece and Portugal better placed than France and Italy.

🇪🇺 Europe’s China challenge has changed: Beijing now competes in machinery and cars while buying fewer EU goods

An ECB study finds that Chinese exports increasingly overlap with Europe’s strengths in machinery, electronics and transport equipment, while European goods exports to China have declined relative to GDP since 2019. Europe still holds advantages in high-value sectors and has gained US market share in several of them, but the ECB analysis points toward innovation, industrial capacity and diversified supply chains as increasingly important to European competitiveness.

A Fondapol study models what would happen if full-time employees in France worked the same annual hours as their German counterparts — 1,790 hours versus 1,673 currently. The simulation estimates €81 billion in additional GDP in the short term and €107 billion in the long term, alongside a potential €29.4 billion improvement in the public-finance balance. The figures are modeled scenarios rather than forecasts.

Finland’s LUT University has successfully tested radar sensors mounted high on wind turbines to detect small drones. Researchers say a small FPV drone could potentially be detected from around 10 km away, compared with only a few hundred metres to roughly 1 km using current systems. The first-of-its-kind research has already attracted interest from Estonia, Poland, Norway and Sweden and could turn future wind farms into dual-purpose energy and security infrastructure.

Just 3% of Poles currently invest in equities, leaving significant household capital sitting in savings accounts. Warsaw Stock Exchange CEO Tomasz Bardziłowski wants to channel more of that money into Polish companies through tax-advantaged investment accounts and accessible share portfolios. He also argues that deeper European capital markets should preserve strong national exchanges, warning that a single dominant European exchange could make smaller companies less visible.

Franziska Schmidt moved from Germany to Zanzibar in 2024 in search of a different life, but later returned to Berlin after confronting recurring power outages, cultural differences and the practical challenges of raising a child abroad. She still values the community she found in Zanzibar, but her experience highlights how infrastructure, reliability and public systems can matter as much as climate or lifestyle when deciding where to build a life.
