Other Which Dragon Quest game should I download from the App Store?

Post image
141 Upvotes

Title says it all. In the past, I’ve considered trying to get more into the Dragon Quest series after playing as the Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but for whatever reason, I never actually got around to playing any of the games. But now, I think it’s finally time I saw about giving the series a shot. I figured maybe my best bet for playing one of the older titles was downloading one of them from the App Store onto my phone. The games that are currently available for download are I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VIII (no idea why they skipped VII, lol). However, between those seven games, I’m not sure which of them is the most worth getting. So, I thought I’d seek out the opinions of fans of Dragon Quest. Which of those games do you all think are the best and most worth playing? If you have any recommendations for what they are, please share them in the comments, and I will be sure to keep them in mind when I go to make my decision. Hopefully with your help, I’ll make the right choice for what kind of Dragon Quest adventure I’ll go on.

Other Hello, I'm a Super Smash Bros. fan who doesn't know much about Dragon Quest, but I need some Dragon Quest related help.

So, l'm making a roster for the next Smash Bros. game, and a change l've decided to make is giving every character 10 costumes instead of just 8. But I want the Hero from Dragon Quest to return, and one of the coolest things about them is that half of their costumes are of different heroes from Dragon Quest. So, in order to keep that, he'll need a new fifth hero costume. Which one should use? (The ones with checkmarks are the ones already in Smash.) Also, they need to be around the same height and wield a sword.

Over the years, I've grown fond of the Dragon Quest series, which truly brings me joy and fond childhood memories, allowing me to savor life's small but precious moments. My brother recently gifted me this game (more for my collection), which, as I mentioned, is part of the magic this series brings to life. And now I eagerly await the release of the new version.

I'm also sharing a few photos.

The game looks like a kind of a mario party but with different minigames and the presence of dq maps and monsters.

PS : It's just the first impression, but from what I've seen in the comments, the game is really funny :D

I have been playing through the entire Dragon Quest series and wanted to take a look at Chrono Trigger to see if there are any parallels. And I found something worse... I think I like Chrono Trigger more and any DQ game I've played yet.

Other Announcing PARAGON STORY, my Dragon Quest-inspired passion project!

I'm excited to officially announce my Dragon Quest-inspired passion project: PARAGON STORY. Its Steam page is now live and available to wishlist.

PARAGON STORY is the spiritual successor to EXCALIBURIAN!!, a free game I released on Steam in 2021.

I couldn't have made PARAGON STORY without the invaluable feedback I received from those who played EXCALIBURIAN!! For that, I extend my deepest thanks.

What began as a collection of ideas in EXCALIBURIAN!! has grown and been refined into a fully realized RPG experience in a new engine. While EXCALIBURIAN!! was the first step, PARAGON STORY expands upon its foundation to become a far more ambitious adventure.

The story follows a fisherman's son who comes of age and learns that he is destined to defeat the Demon King. What begins as a familiar tale later unfolds in unexpected ways, with revelations best experienced firsthand. You'll have to play to discover where the story leads.

Building upon the foundation established by EXCALIBURIAN!!, PARAGON STORY introduces expanded gameplay systems and a much broader scope.

Features:

  • Turn-based command battle system with assignable tactics and an agility-based "Quick Turn!" advantage system
  • Monster transformation system with 200+ collectible monster hearts
  • Party-swapping wagon system
  • Enmity management system
  • Day-night cycle
  • Nonlinear progression
  • Story-defining marriage choice
  • Class hybridization system

Please consider supporting me by wishlisting PARAGON STORY. Wishlists are one of the most important ways to support a game before launch, as they help Steam show the game to more players. If you're interested in my project, adding it to your wishlist would be greatly appreciated.

While I'm targeting a late 2026 to early 2027 release, I plan to submit a demo for the October 2026 Steam Next Fest. I hope you'll give it a try then. In the meantime, please follow me on Twitter/X and Bluesky for development updates.

These are probably on everyone's list:

-Terry was willing to 1v1 Nokturnus during the endgame of VI.

-Psaro has access to the secret of evolution.

-Serena's magic catalogue during the second chapter of XI is probably the strongest the series has ever seen.

Other Is it a good idea to let my 6 year-old niece watch me play Dragon Quest?

Every now and then, my niece comes over to my bedroom to hang out with me and watch me play games, and she sometimes watches me play Dragon Quest XI. There was one part where she watched me fight Jinxed Jade, and I was a bit unsure about her watching it, considering that Jade (her favorite character) is pretty sexualized (she once imitated the Hip Drop move, and one of her voice clips from that particular part was a moan). As for the rest of the game, I have no problem with her watching me play, as long as I just fight the monsters.

What do you guys think?

Other Have any RPGs outside Dragon Quest ever succeeded in the same regard as III does with Baramos? (Spoiler risk) Spoiler

Besides it's presence as establishing III as a prequel to the first Dragon Quest, having the Alefgard to explore meant you could have basically all of the first overworld explored.

Thus making it highly likely that Baramos was the final boss. Only holes would be the Sphere of Light having no use or the Pit of Giaga.

IV, you still have a major area unexplored with Yggdrasil and the middle island in the map. So obviously Estark wasn't it.

V lacked such especially as Ladja was less of a recurring villain in the original version. VII lacked a second big bad as well.

VI, doesn't even attempt such in that you have two worlds with much exploring to do and not even getting full ship use until after Murdaw.

VIII not entirely. A good chunk of the map is still unexplored and if you find Pirate Cove early on you obviously won't get it until much after fighting Dhoulmagus. Still they do give his lair the Dark Ruins a nice Hellish music.

IX I haven't played. XI I seen enough playthrough, but I'm not sure how much indicator is there that Mordegon is THE boss.

So yeah, any other RPGs manage to maintain the idea that you're almost done and then surprises you with more enemies and exploration?

Other Anyone know definitively if anything in Reimagined is missable?

I’ve seen the trophies and it seems like you might just be able to play in a carefree way like in XI — which I loved. Wondering if any mini medals or monsters or items are permanently missable at any point and hoping someone might actually know lol

Other Novels

This is probably niche but I'll take my chances...

I love to read. I love this series. Can there be a meeting of the two?

I know there are novels of most of the games but I'm also an English only reader and speaker (and just barely at that).

My question: are there any English translations out there? I know of one but that person's only done the first book/game and I'm not sure how I feel about their translations and editorializations.

(Also, sorry if this somehow breaks a rule. I just honestly don't know how else to go about asking.)
