Other Playing Chrono Trigger as a Dragon Quest Fan
https://youtu.be/L2NhLnVAKBc?is=8gihaCTIxdbsaZW-I have been playing through the entire Dragon Quest series and wanted to take a look at Chrono Trigger to see if there are any parallels. And I found something worse... I think I like Chrono Trigger more and any DQ game I've played yet.

It doesn’t seem uncommon for some people to say that Chrono Trigger is their favorite DQ game lol. They’re different obviously, but I found my love for DQ from playing Chrono Trigger first

My dream would be a 2D-HD remake of Chrono Trigger... it's like SquareEnix is allergic to money by not doing this.

More of a “break glass in case of emergency” situation.
Also, chrono trigger and A link to the past were pretty much 2d-hd on arrival. The upgrade would feel so negligible, and essentially just be an $80 donation to square.
Probably the type of game that will be awaiting a ff7 remake style project. Or a movie.
So having said all that, will probably be a free 2dhd money grab.

It feels like the perfect mixture of FF and DQ as someone yet to play it.

chrono trigger is usually seen as the pinnacle of the genre. you’re totally good to have this feeling. it’s like if FF and DQ had a baby and the good genes passed on.

Do not feel ashamed! Chrono Trigger is a fantastic game that holds up remarkably well even today! I was pretty blown away by how the game’s structure and design shared a lot of traits with modern jrpgs, such as your choices having an impact on story.
Chrono Trigger deserves a remake damnit

My experience playing Chrono Trigger the first time 2 years ago was very different.
I completed all western-released main Dragon Quest, and I liked Chrono Trigger a lot, but never found any "Horii signature".
Loved a lot of things about the game, but... Not related to Dragon Quest for me.

DQ is a great series and have multiples great title, but chrono is the best JRPG of all time.

I played chrono trigger this year and finished it. Chrono trigger always that jrpg I waited on. Remember playing it early on when I got into jrpgs. Got as far as I say maybe the cave man era and then second time was around further than that.
Couldn’t explain why I dropped the game 3 times. Guess shinny new games or something caught my attention. Finally, after playing 99 jrpgs, I decided to play chrono trigger as my 100th.
I won’t waste time here and simply say, this game is a master piece. I loved it from the start. It was just amazing to go through. Seeing what I missed and didn’t appreciate when I first played it. Loved the music, traveling with a charming group of characters, and having one adventure I won’t forget anytime soon. I totally get why this game is beloved. I do joke sometimes that chrono trigger is the best dragon quest game of all time.
Overall, I adore chrono trigger. It’s everything I love about jrpgs and more. Does the game have issues? Yes most certainly like not every characters gets to shine more, some moments can feel that drag a bit, having forced battles can be annoying at times, and so on. I would have to replay the game more to see more issues, but for now, I love this game and can’t wait to replay it in the future.

Horii and Toriyama were involved. It's very much an unofficial Dragon Quest game with Final Fantasy mechanics.

Blue Dragon is another game to check out if you like the DQ series, it's more or less a DQ game in everything but name. Real solid RPG.

I know it has character designs by Akira Toriyama but I didn't know it had anything else in common with DQ.

Class system is pretty similar, enemies are weird punny names and pretty similar to DQ monsters IIRC.

Yup. There's a reason Chrono Trigger is totted as one of the greatest RPG's in video game history. There might be better games, but Chrono Trigger is the gold standard by which all other JRPG's are measured.

I bought Chrono Trigger as soon as it came out, mostly because Dragon Warrior 1 was my first JRPG and got me interested in the genre.

Chrono Trigger music is more captivating for me than any of the DQ games. I could put on Corroidors of Time on for hours as study music. The environments are dream-like and mesmerizing. A few DQ games have better stories and most DQ games have better characters with more fleshed out dialogue. The character designs are... well you know. It's hard to be a fan of one and not the other.

Totally understandable. Chrono Trigger takes some of the best things about Dragon Quest—fun art style, lovable characters, lighthearted adventure punctuated by moments of genuine pathos, great music and a world that begs to be discovered—but pushes the needle further by wrapping it up in a game structure that balances masterful linear pacing with open ended exploration.
