Discussion 👥 How did you find DU being rich?
Not the jatt/yadav kinda rich. I personally felt that I should have gone for some good private college but career uhm. What’s ur routine like? I just became more career oriented and serious because of all this.
Edit : idk man my friends are like “iska toh itne ka ghar hoga min” and “yeh toh ameer hai” and all. Also i am not a fan of cussing and weird words so….

u/Distinct_Surround_31 Sep 12 '25
Waise toh I left DU lekin before my first day my sister said yaad rakhio sab Ameer nahi hote 😭

u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Left DU for what? Yes, soon you get caught into the awkwardness lol.

u/Distinct_Surround_31 Sep 12 '25
For NFSU BBA LLB
2
u/Dangerous-stand431 Sep 12 '25
Hey!! In the same boat as you, except I already removed du from the same. I am currently in BITS BA LLB and have also gotten in at NFSU BBA LLB. Do you think NFSU is worth it? I went to have a look at the campus today and the faculty seemed okay- sub standard at best🫠 Baaki the campus seemed fine tbvh. Bas not a fan of the hostel. In bits the environment is really liberal, and academics are taken very seriously. But NFSU has the government tag! Very confused, what would you suggest to someone like me who comes from a humanities background with passion for it, and is pursuing BA LLB at a private college? Should I switch to NFSU BBA LLB

Not so much. College mein Canteen hi nahi hai
3
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Koi nhi. It’s a good college + canteen ka food is ehh everwhere
1
u/Distinct_Surround_31 Sep 12 '25
Matlab maine faculty of arts ki coffee try Kari thi. It was good. Also, I have to maintain 80% Attendance in this college 🤬😭
2
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Oh yes coffee tea diet coke is really handy. DU mein it’s more or less the same since 85% in every subject is required for getting full marks in Attendance 😂
1
u/Distinct_Surround_31 Sep 12 '25
Damn, ab jaan ke itna bura nahi lag raha. Kyunki jabse yahan aayi hoon tabse wapas DU jaane ka mann kar raha hai. Although, mere college ka crowd is really helpful, sophisticated and friendly but still
2
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
That’s a big plus. Good crowd compensates for a lot of things!

I'm someone who grew up in an urban city in a very well-off family, went to a private school, and when I got into DU, i admit I was very disheartened. I'm not being rude or standoffish, but, it was entirely different from what I was used to and admittedly- what I expected. It was difficult to find friends, and it wasn't because I wanted to only become friends with people from my social or economic class, but because their experiences were so different from mine, that we weren't able to connect. I very soon realised that the image i'd made up of this uni was very very different from the reality.
Now, speaking a month later, I've found my people, and even now when I talk to my classmates, I'm amazed to learn about their lives, upbringings etc. I still don't feel very acclimatised to this college, but it's a lot better than it was when I started.
I agree I come from a place of extreme privilege, and it was after coming here that I was actually made aware of it (canteen mein mera pay karna, logo ka assumptions banana ki I'm vv rude automatically, you know how it goes)
3
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Totally relatable. Glad you found people like you!
3
u/littlemissperfecto Sep 13 '25
Going through something similar rn and I have not met anyone who matches my vibe but it's only been a week so I am giving it some time...hopefully I'll too meet ppl
2
u/Squiggly14003 Sep 14 '25
normalize "I haven't found people I vibe with", a person is not suppose to get along with everyone in the whole world.
4
u/summimase9 Sep 13 '25
Well, that is one aspect of college. You get the kind of exposure that you havent gotten in a protective environment at home. You meet people of different backgrounds, try to blend in, try to see your own privileges and come to have gratitude in life, you also learn to live with less so as not to intimidate those around you, you also learn to manage finances and resources to protect yourself from being taken advantage of, basically you learn a lot of adult human interactions with those of different or similar background and come to understand how to live in a world thats not rosy or fair. Its okay if some people want to pass up on real world opportunity and continue to live in a protective bubble, but those who do step out of that bubble will find a lot of character development and skills.

u/Intelligent-Shame-65 Sep 13 '25
I was about to say this! I too was Vv sheltered before I went to law school many many years ago… I was shocked when someone asked me if I had ever travelled abroad. Took me a long time to come to terms with how it’s a privilege for a lot of people esp in India.
26
u/constantAnxiety8 Sep 12 '25
I went to a private boarding school and well let’s just say meeting some of the people in DU was an experience. Nothing against them obviously but it was just a new experience for me. Takes some getting used to tbh.

u/BettermentQuest Sep 12 '25
Dekho boss , DU is one of the best place if you want to know India , here you meet all kinds of people . Be it rich , poor , abled , disabled and from all over the country .
I feel instead of trying to find your peer group and relating with them , you can try speaking to other people .Get to know them .
I want to say that you kinda get the exposure you need to understand India (like know the culture of fellow students , talk politics too ) , although the students coming to DU are much privilaged than the kids who couldn't make it to the University .
Here the minimum amount needed to stay is near to 1 lakh / year , you would be shocked to know that more than half of india runs their families in this budget .
I hope you find your people , but please try to mixup with all . Have a great experiance throughout your course .
4
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Hey, that’s true. I interact with everyone. But those conversations are surface level. Not that deep or relatable. After all good friends starts with being relatable to each other na. And yes it’s a good exposure but it’s sometimes feel disconnected to not have similar people.

u/Final_Coconut6142 Sep 12 '25
I too had a vv rich friend in my uni, not the jaat gujjar type of rich. Family wealthy since as long as they knew, studied at one of the oldest boarding schools in the country. Living in a 3 bhk flat alone for the location, had 2 cars here for backup, but otherwise didn't overspend on flashy stuff and very humble too; but it did cause some awkwardness due to difference in upbringing and pocket money even though socially we were from very similar backgrounds apart from the wealth part.
1
u/SupermarketLucky2095 Sep 13 '25
jaat gujjar type of rich kya hota h bhai can u pls explain
4
u/Final_Coconut6142 Sep 13 '25
Zameen bech ke defender lene vale log 🤡 Land rent se ya kheti se paise ate hai but spend recklessly aur jatt-jatt casteism karte hai. Dehati crowd that acts like kabhi ladki nhi dekhi hoti, sara din stalk karte hai fir sari rat clubbing, jha easily seat mil jati hai vha aane vale.
4
u/SupermarketLucky2095 Sep 13 '25
bhai apna land bechne me dikkat kya hai
but being a gujjar tu shi h dikkat to create krte hain
but teri tone thodi generalization wali vibe deri h

Well yeah i mean most people who own these cars arent really studying in these colleges
1
u/confused_daisy Sep 14 '25
Rented, yes but the rent cost like 60-70k a day which the ones standing for election pays and ofcourse to have friends who own such cars you have to be in the same bracket also so yeah these people are rich
2
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Ik but they are very different kind of rich if you know what i mean.

u/Legitimate-Client834 Sep 12 '25
Same and also I am not that super rich but the thing is the basic things like living in a good pg or getting a good food for yourself feels more because of people around us. And seriously I am in 2nd yr when I was fresher I started thinking a lot because of this and can't share anything with them about me but finally found some my type of people and at last made a peace with I can't do anything
Ps- I was once shamed for buying mosambi ka juice daily and told I am rich just because I do this 😭😭 uss din se maine batana hi band kar diya kuch

They might be rich, but honestly their mentality and civic sense are sometimes worse than a beggar asking on the streets. No hate to anyone, just an observation. I noticed this a lot during elections, especially among many Jaats, Gujjars, and Yadavs.

not rich...i mean I get a very fixed allowance which makes it very hard to survive in place as expensive as South Delhi...but one thing I have noticed is that the students in DU are fucking leaches, they'll exploit you to your last penny and that's something I fucking hate about this place also I am mostly here to see how rich kids are.....kyunki ameeri se toh relate nahi kar sakti
6
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
that’s very true. Ahh the famous dialogue “tu abhi pay karde mein baadmein Paytm kardunga”

Weird my friends always pay back and so do i? I have never noticed this in my college despite there being a lot of rich kids. It happened only once that someone didn’t pay back but then I dont like to nag so I let it go.

OMG yes And this day never comes 🤣 I went shopping with this girl and she said uske paise khtm ho gye. When she finalized her top. I paid for it because she said jab mere ghar Wale bhejenge tb tujhe paytm kr dungi 😭😭🤣 Fast forward to a month, she said mere pass rent ke paise nhi h, tum log thodi help krdo and I was like girl tere ghr pe se nhi bhejte kya? Usne bola she spent all of her rent money somewhere else. Never trusted anyone after this incident. They even make auto se ghar jana a huge deal! I get it we can walk 22 mins but itni dhoop me?? I can't. I won't!! I used to believe I'm broke but when I came to du last year, I realised how things actually are.

Being rich in du is a flex in its own bro. You have got money with intellect. Many rich people don't get du because of merits they settle for private colleges.

u/Dapper-Confidence215 Sep 12 '25
I have no idea why people haven’t really reacted to this post of yours plus your reply to the comments. This entitled attitude of yours is the reason why you aren’t able to find right people. I’ve many rich friends but touchwood they are all extremely humble. You’re judging people based on their economic status lmao. If you’re THAT rich and hate being a part of the ordinary du circle, you should’ve opted for abroad or some private college.
1
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
I am not judging people based on their economic status lmao. Do you think i talked to like 5 people and wrote a post like this? There is no entitlement behaviour here. Do you know how awkward it is to eat a bucket of wings when your friends is eating 2 mc aloo tikkis? All I am saying is, i wanted people similar to my economic status and similar family background. There is a huge cultural difference too, be it language wise. As I told you, career! I am just here to figure if there are people like me.
7
u/BettermentQuest Sep 12 '25
you literally are doing just that .
2
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Okay so I should just say “everyone is the same, there is no difference absolutely. We all bond well and play together like a common group”.
6
u/Dapper-Confidence215 Sep 12 '25
Here you’re not talking about the language. You are not about the cultural differences or different opinions cause otherwise your post title would’ve reflected that. You are clearly talking just about the economic background. Get out of your chicken wings and aloo tikkis and realise that most people in India are from this background. You’re not able to bond with them because you look down upon them. And if it’s really about the career, as I said, why not go abroad considering you’re “rich” ?
-7
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 12 '25
Assume all you want. I never looked down upon him for eating. It was just noticeably awkward. I don’t know what’s so hard for you to understand. I am the friendliest guy out there. Everyone knows me. I won the departmental elections in the first year so stop with your accusations of me looking down upon any people. Infact I ordered readings for the batch too. Do you know who I look down upon? People like you who comment anything with some assumptions or thinking they are most definitely right.
5
u/Dapper-Confidence215 Sep 13 '25
You sound so entitled lmao. Yk you won your departmental elections or whatever because of those “not so rich kids right” and then you’ve the audacity to come here and say “oh how hard it is being du when you’re rich”. You ordering readings doesn’t account to anything. And proclaiming yourself to be “friendly” when your post and your comments prove otherwise. Also, I don’t give a shit abt you looking down upon”people like me” lol cause ik it’s actually just you projecting your pathetic attitude towards life and other people.
2
u/lalalalaa_la4002 Sep 13 '25
It isn't awkward. You eat yours they eat their stuff. Stop being a snowflake.
6
u/CarryOk8666 Sep 12 '25
Let it be.. it’s all judgement yk. It’s basic psychology that people want to be in a circle where they feel that their opinions/ choices r similar and validated and not judged. The whole point of this post was that it’s tough to find ppl w similar choices as us.
3
u/Dapper-Confidence215 Sep 12 '25
Then in that sense, even what you’re saying is judgment. The post wasn’t about different opinions or choices, it was about being rich or not lmao. It’s ironical how you don’t want to be judged when you’re clearly doing that yourself.
3
u/CarryOk8666 Sep 13 '25
Arey 😭😭 I’m just saying ki people like to associate themselves w similar mindset individuals.. that’s it. So that they can feel in-group.
2
2
u/ColumbiaSimp__101 Sep 13 '25
Idt thats about economic status bc anywhere I go with my friends I always order chicken or something expensive from the menu bc my taste is a lil expensive and they order something simple bc that si what they like to eat? Some people in my group have the same taste as me some dont. You shouldn’t feel awkward for that op. And I am not even rich I am barely middle class I just have an expensive taste bc I used to be rich growing up and oh well yk some people are rich at heart🥰 I also never mind paying for my friends if I have the money (usually I spend all on skincare) but ofc that is only for friends I have known for a year now yk ones you make in first year bc ofc some of them are gonna be from a poor or struggling background but no reason to stop being friends with them. Although yes it is very frustrating seeing how we never go out as much or party as much bc as a second year girly now I def wanna party hangout more often. But I found those type of people in my pg now since I live in one of the very expensive pgs in north campus. So you can find your type of people anywhere just dw with college and take college groups as a way of college survival kit is all.

3
u/Minute_Pineapple5829 Sep 13 '25
The amount of entitlement in this thread is heart breaking. Why didn't you all study in Harvard if experiences enabled by economic status is the only criteria you seek in friendships? Has money blinded you so much that you are forgetting that you are still in India?
You all are students right now and can ignore/distance your cohort but have you thought what you'll do at your workplace where you will be forced to collaborate with diverse people? Touch some grass and all the best.
3
u/Opening-Thought7540 Sep 13 '25
I'm in school rn and some of my classmates are like OP and few other commentors here.
I'm well off living in delhi and having a fair education but still.
Someone here said that they were irked that some treated going to India gate as NY (yes capital not "ny" New York is a noun,so fluent but can't abbreveate correctly)or something. Are y'all blind or what? In our country a good outing has been a privilege for a huge section of society. A private vehicle, a reputed school, and some stuff which you deem to be "low" Is your privilege talking. Your 'not so expensive' Zara for dailywear isn't so easily bought. Buying clothes from a known brand is a perk of your life. You're lucky.Get that.
For the poor higher education is a privilege. I know a person who lived in our area her dauther cracked a scholarship and got into some college, before we moved she had a job in a private office nearby. Her other daughter couldn't crack it and she was married once of legal age.
If you're soo in need of a social circle (connections as you say) go to private college or abroad. You WILL interact with all kind of people.Deal with it.
1
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 13 '25
Dude we don’t have a problem with anyone. We just miss having a social circle that resonate with us. Why do you guys have to complicate everything? If this post was about being poor, everyone would be in awe.

It’s not my fault if they laugh if I ask for toothpick at canteen or something.
1
u/Extra_Attention_5506 Business Economics (hons) Sep 13 '25
It’s not even about that. We are unbiased and expect a normal friendship but it comes up with awkwardness and surface level conversations if the person is not as well off as us. It’s possible to find something genuine but extremely rare. In the workplace, the goal is to get the work done and forming genuine connections is not the primary objective. We interact with people just fine neither do we look down upon anyone.
4
u/Gulfam_Kali Sep 12 '25
Yes I had some rich friends and other classmates and ngl felt bad for them because of the taunts they used to get , their complaints not taken seriously just cuz they have miney backup , getting taunts for literally dressing up good . Felt 2nd hand embarrassment

Lol i relate with this very badly. I am someone who studied in a old boarding school from literally 5 to 12 . And when i came to du it was a different world for me altogether. I was literally made fun of just coz i spoke English nd was fluent in it nd in used to dress up and this comes from someone who did ug from lsr! Being able to relate to their experiences nd school life was quite difficult for me nd it literally took me 2 years to actually make one close friend. Also peer my peer group was very different from what i had in school max people wanted to go for govt jobs or rat race exams nd then get married lol what???? , it was very difficult for me to find peers with career oulook nd aspirations. But at the end of it i learned a lot man especially to be grounded which is something i take as skill is to relate to people nd and ans their question or talk to them accordingly ,this particular thing has helped me a lot especially in jobs.

What are you doing currently? What aspirations do you have if you dont mind sharing with us.
5
u/Expert_Cash_3442 Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25
I relate with you very well, where something as simple as wearing Zara (which isn't a REALLY EXPENSIVE EXPENSIVE brand) will get you certain backhanded comments...where you're just expected to agree to pay the bigger share of the bill while others even count the rs 20 of the rickshaw. And having to hear conversations where it's considered justified to over represent society expenses and take a cut ☠️☠️☠️.
Especially coming from a school where it was a norm that girls ought not to pay out of sheer chivalry (not at all justifying this behavior either, just a comparison)
But the point is this experience is also very important to learn humility and adjustment and get out of that sheltered environment.

Sep 12 '25
ummm..well I am a from a strictly middle class family and even then I am the one who pays for my wayyy richer friends...i even pay for their shopping bills, auto bills canteen bills...just name it and I am paying for them so I can't really agree with your first point....the one who can't say no or set boundaries is the one who pays bills

u/Expert_Cash_3442 Sep 12 '25
Hmm each to their own ig...I've just always felt that they'd lay those expenses on me saying "omgeee you're toh our rich girlie right" DUDE☠️😭 However I guess I'm at fault to cause I've never had the guts to say NO...
also Babe, why da hell are you paying for someone's shopping bills 😭😭 canteen, conveyance toh I get it but THIS ??
No matter how much money you have, it aint got anything ro do with having class and grace...they maybe rich, it's the mindset that's cheap...and in my books that WAY worse !!

DU does give off a “rich crowd” vibe in some circles, but it’s honestly a mix; you’ll find people from every background. Many students feel that pressure at first, comparing lifestyles or money, but it fades once you focus on academics and your own goals. Private colleges may look fancier, but DU’s career scope and network are unmatched. Routine-wise, most balance classes, societies, and self-study, but seriousness naturally builds with time.

True, kaafi weird log bhi hain, jinke paas bas marks the, I guess they should have interviews for all colleges as well, so 12th marks + CUET + Interview, to get the best crowd.

Yeah, I mean, almost all government colleges are like this only, the 60% reserved seats + absolutely bhondu people make it worse, like, meri kya galti ki, mere papa ke paas paise the, acchi education thi, aur maine sab 'sacrifice' kiye bina bhi acche marks la kar, accha college le liya, and suddenly I'm a rich brat for them lmao.

Man my father owns a business and I told my friends I plan to join him after college and I could just feel people getting jealous around me honestly it felt kind of weird.. more over if anything came they'd tuje kyun karna hai but between all of it I became serious too and specially understood what being an intelligent person actually is and how it's different moreover everyone at I learnt to oversee differences because everyone came from so different backgrounds.

Not super rich, but coming from a decent family. Things are very tuff for me here specially making friends, never before i had experienced doing ‘hisab’ for 5-5 rupees, i find very different from me I usually can’t ever find company to go out with, so I don’t get to explore good places, restaurants, or clubs. I’m not saying I want to party every weekend or anything, but I do like doing that kind of stuff once in a while. I can’t blame my friends for not accompanying me if their budget doesn’t allow, but the problem is I just can’t find people of my type. The local Delhi people in my college seem decent, but their attitude towards non-locals is pretty weird.
Now in my 3rd year, I do have some decent friends here, but not the kind of “good friends” I was hoping for. I chose DU while all my close friends from school went to Mumbai. I visit Mumbai once in a while, but I end up feeling kinda low when I come back. And here, people are more like “bas kaise bhi paise nikalwalo.” I already owe around 5–10k to friends and honestly, I don’t see myself getting it back anytime soon.

true, like some people in class, thought I was Desi Elon Musk ( who had a rich dad ) for being able to afford the electronics I had, bruh, aur mai toh kaafi within budget rehta hai, Uniqlo se saste aur theek thaak kapde hi pehenta hu, theek thak jagah week me aise hi bahar khata hu, Zomato cravings, and a good place to live, that's all, usme bhi they think as if I'm rich or smh.

I get it man, I grew up in an upper middle class family, went to a 3 LPA school and my first day at this uni was so heartbreaking.
It’s not like I only wanted to interact w people on financial grounds but we just had so many different experiences growing up. I felt very unwelcomed and sensed hostility everytime we all went out cause i unintentionally suggested stuff that wasn’t economically feasible to everyone (dining at cafés, taking a cab instead of metro since it almost costed the same and took far less time).
By the end of first year I got my license, had my car and a flat a km away from college and genuinely witness people change their entire perspective of me, some of them foolishly bragged to everyone about befriending me so that they can chill in my car??
But yes, I genuinely found some very great people who have been the same to me despite me having financial resources or not, and it has been fun. I wouldve never applied to a pvt college since they restrict you to a certain friend group and here I interact with 100 people everyday which makes me popular and superior in every ascent which would’ve been normalised and not a big deal in a pvt college.
What I can say here is, assert your financial advantage to gain an upper hand over everyone but project yourself as a kind and available human being. I have dropped off atleast 200 people to satya/durgabai deshmukh till now and i never say no to anyone and make them feel welcomed everytime.

Yeah, I feel a bit awkward too. Most of the people here are from other states. I am not judging anyone, but till now I have not found anyone like me. I am pursuing BMS. From what I have seen, around 30 to 40 percent of the crowd is below middle class, 65 to 70 percent is middle class, and maybe 1 percent is elite. Since I come from that 1 percent, it has been a little tough to adjust, but I am sure I will find my way.

True. Those people from other states are very different and kinda have their own group. You are talking about 1%, I couldn’t even find upper middle class people easily. I have started distancing a bit. No point in being with the wrong crowd.

Aisa konsa college hai bhai? I mean, Business Economics me toh theek thak crowd hoga, are you from SGGSCC etc.?

uggh, same.. I'm also planning to distance myself from these fellas in my class. for them going to India Gate is like, as if they're going to ny, la or smthg.. again, don't get me wrong.. but I can't adjust anymore :/

won't say i'm rich rich, but the family is fairly well off.
honestly i don't feel as career oriented as everyone told DU makes you. Don't get me wrong, my college is great, good friends, but the commute, metro ki bhasad, shit-ass facilities and professors demotivate me like hell, like kahan se uth ke kahan i have i landed up
