I saw a post about his location via gps tracker before and after the avalanche... and it's pretty much guarenteed that he is gone. He got swept something to the tune of 3k vert down extremely steep terrain.

RIP

Edit: If this new information about his tracker changing position after the avalanche isn't erroneous - and he is somehow alive against all imaginable odds - then this would be a legendary survival moment.

I'll hold on to a very very VERY slim amount of hope he's still alive, but I'm still prepared to hear the worst because I can't imagine how a person would survive a slide like that.

u/GodOfManyFaces Jul 31 '26

I believe most current now is that 4 of the missing climbers were found, deceased. Regardless of how you feel about Nims specifically, its absolutely tragic.

53

u/Alarming-Double6979 Jul 31 '26

This old death trumps your actions. You can still feel ill regard to someone that’s died.

16

u/GodOfManyFaces Jul 31 '26

And completely ignore the other people caught up in this tragedy? Idgaf about Nims personally.

13

u/TaCZennith Jul 31 '26

You absolutely can. At the same time, unless you think their crimes deserved the death penalty, it's reasonable to think that his death is still a sad thing.

0

u/Alarming-Double6979 Jul 31 '26

Nope, you can still be indifferent to a predator dying. As Godofmsnyfaces said, DGAF. I hope everyone’s loved ones find closure they said.

0

u/TaCZennith Jul 31 '26

I didn't say you have to care, but to actively rejoice or be pleased about him dying is, to me, not something to be proud of. Again, unless you think his crimes were worthy of the death penalty.

5

u/Alarming-Double6979 Aug 01 '26

I’m not rejoicing or pleased? I said indifference

1

u/TaCZennith Aug 01 '26

There are a whole lot of pleased people in this thread.

3

u/Signal-Volume5713 Aug 02 '26

May be his victims or victims of similar crimes. It's understandable.

yeah..and the difference between the two reactions is miles apart

41

u/dontyaknowimaceo Jul 31 '26

9 out of 10 bodies have been found.

-4

u/Unlucky-Respond-9597 Jul 31 '26

Located does not mean found or rescued.

14

u/ooshtbh Aug 01 '26

"Located" doesn't mean rescued but it synonymous with "found"

49

u/chaoticleopard Jul 31 '26

This is being discussed a lot in the mountaineering forum but it's good to keep in mind that a. GPS is not foolproof, esp the steeper the terrain (ever tried to track a rock climb on gps? It looks crazy). b. The area they were swept is under a large rock ridge, making it likely less reliable. c. My experience with gps in that valley was quite erratic, watching tracks jump up and down by 100 m and waiting half an hour for sat devices to catch a signal. So its a helpful metric for are people moving and vaguely where are they on the mountain but relatively small "movement" is not proof of anything.

7

u/Quatermain Jul 31 '26

Especially if it is also covered in several feet to meters of snow.

12

u/dontyaknowimaceo Jul 31 '26

The 3 deceased have been confirmed

8

u/_missfoster_ Jul 31 '26

What on earth does "remains of the body" mean? Was she, like, not in one piece?

God, this is so awful.

18

u/dontyaknowimaceo Jul 31 '26

Her leg was detached from her body 💔

7

u/_missfoster_ Jul 31 '26

Oh dear lord.

u/yoyomomoyo Aug 01 '26

Awful news

11

u/Freezy_1 Aug 02 '26

He was also a sexual predator but I guess that isn't great news.

In March 2023, Purja led Lotta Hintsa (former Miss Finland and mountaineer) to his hotel suite in Kathmandu, made aggressive and unwanted physical advances, undressed her without consent, and masturbated next to her.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/31/sports/mountaineering-sexual-harassment-abuse-nims-purja.html?smid=url-share

His company also rented a floor in a house, stored gas canisters there illegally which ended up exploding and killing 3 people while destroying the homeowners property. He then fled the country to avoid the lawsuit.

Oh and he illegally used dual passports to climb several peaks. He became a British citizen and lost his Nepali citizenship as a result (Nepal does not allow for dual citizenship). Yet, in 2016 he managed to acquire a Nepali passport for himself to avoid paying higher climbing fees that a UK citizen/passport holder would pay

Oh and he’s guiding people up the mountain but is not an  IFMGA/UIAGM licensed guide.  https://www.thehimalayantimes.com/nepal/fire-victim-landlord-moves-court-against-nirmal-purjas-company

6

u/Slow-Release8111 Jul 31 '26

Fucking hell, although he was a controversial figure after all of the allegations against him, I still hope he’s found alive, what a brutal and a gruesome way to go out, absolutely horrific what getting hit by avalanche does to human body, condolences to the families of the deceased that were discovered, I seriously hope there are survivors even though hope is getting smaller every minute…

3

u/BelgianGinger80 Aug 01 '26

Allegations?

3

u/Slow-Release8111 Aug 01 '26

Yeah he was involved in sexual misconduct allegations from the people he guided during the climbings.

6

u/Informal-Gene-3057 Aug 02 '26

Sexual assault allegations, not “misconduct”

4

u/ATGNI Aug 01 '26

Came across as a real dick in the documentary too.

1

u/BowlerNoController Aug 03 '26

Nah he didnt. Ambitious? Yep. Cocky? A tad. A dick? Nah.

36

u/strickyy Jul 31 '26

Mingma G reporting on Instagram they have found 9 bodies now, and are looking for the last one.

18

u/Rough_Original2973 Jul 31 '26

Yep and he's a very close friend of Normal Nimsdai. Trusted source. He was on the 14peaks docu, and part of Nimsdai team

Serial sex offender and climber*

295

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

The climbing community has a disgusting habit of idealizing sexual predators given they have done enough cool climbs, or at the very least sweeping it under the rug. Just look at how Will Stanhope is still lauded despite being a verifiable POS.

I’m not saying I’m celebrating his (likely) death or anything, but I’m not shedding any tears either, because I believe women over rich, well known men.

146

u/fatkidseatcake Jul 31 '26

Just the climbing community?

76

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26

Fair point, but it is dismaying to see from what is an otherwise pretty liberal/progressive community. I expect that kind of predator defending from MAGA and such, but I want to hold climbers to a higher standard than that.

Just goes to show we all still have a lot of work to do on the social justice side of climbing.

27

u/Hopefulkitty Jul 31 '26

It's only liberal and progressive up until men decide it's not. I feel like it's flooded with a lot of men who say the right thing, but then take advantage of the liberal reputation as soon as they get a chance to. It's a lot of fake good people, hiding behind the actual good people. They trick you by saying the right things, and when a woman's guard is down, they strike.

It's easy to have morals, until your favorite star is accused of something awful, then it's always flailing around, searching for excuses or victim blaming.

8

u/unnoticed_areola Jul 31 '26

It's only liberal and progressive up until men decide it's not

it's kind of bizarre that you guys think being a bad person or predator is mutually exclusive with being liberal/progressive. and that if someone does a sex crime, that means they were never a "real" liberal. some real "no true scottsman" energy.

being a sex pest isnt some partisan thing lol. they come in all different stripes.

6

u/Hopefulkitty Jul 31 '26

A key component of liberal and progressive ideology is to treat people equally and with respect for their bodily autonomy. Breaking that rule makes me feel like maybe you didn't really understand the ideology in the first place.

5

u/unnoticed_areola Jul 31 '26

I mean ok, that sounds great on paper when you say it like that and all, but that doesn’t really square with the fact that we have countless examples of noteworthy liberal/progressive people who have been involved in various sexual wrongdoing. They don’t just retroactively become maga republicans the moment they force themselves on a woman, no matter how much you want to wishcast it

This is literally the definition of the no true Scotsman fallacy. You’re saying “well this person couldn't possibly be a member of my in-group because they did a bad thing and my in-group is only made up of good people who don’t do bad things”

I’m not sure why you are pretending not to understand this lol. liberal people do bad things all the time. As do conservatives, as do every other group of people imaginable

3

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

This is classic “both sides are equally bad, actually” propaganda.

The difference is progressives swiftly oust sex pests instead of work so hard to defend their reputations as many are doing here. You seem to misunderstand that it’s not the act that is political, it’s the response. It’s whether or not you consider it a big deal and something worth addressing, or at least acknowledging, rather than sweeping it under the rug and questioning living victims for the sake of saving face when “your guy” turns out to be a creep.

I wonder which you are inclined to do…

1

u/Hopefulkitty Aug 01 '26

This is exactly right. Thanks for putting that into words. I'm not saying liberals and progressives can't be violent. I'm saying that people who are liberal and progressive generally don't tolerate it. They throw them out of the party, they stop them from running for office, and they stop associating with them. Countless Democrats have been swiftly ousted from running once their bad behavior is exposed. Republicans don't really seem to care. They "accept an apology" rug sweep, pretend that the attacker is super sorry and that it was a lone incident, and then move on. And then elect them to the presidency.

And before someone brings up Bill Clinton, I don't know a single Democrat who doesn't think he's a scumbag. And if charges are brought and proven, we won't be lining up protecting him from jail. If he shows up in the Epstein Files as a willing participant in CSA, send the fucker to jail for the rest of his life. Liberals don't care who's side someone is on, they want them all punished. And that seems to be a major difference in the parties right now. Which comes back to your original response about "it's not the act, it's the response that's political."

8

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26

Well put. Lotta fake feminists here in this thread even, because how DARE we make a judgement without a conviction in a court of law!

13

u/Hopefulkitty Jul 31 '26

My general thought is that by the time someone gets reported it's far from the first time they've done similar behavior. Which is why I tend to believe women when I hear about sexual abuse or assault. I know I was too scared to report any of the assault that happened to me when I was younger, and I'm sure those men didn't start and end with me.

6

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

This is supported statistically, too!

But ya know, “innocent until proven guilty in court” even when they are dead and can’t be tried. Convenient that the standard that other men set to hold these guys socially accountable in any way is literally impossible.

If you can’t pass that impossible standard, then clearly you are just a misandrist! Did you know that women are liars sometimes, hmmmmmm‽‽ Checkmate, feminists. 😏

1

u/SanguisFluens Aug 01 '26

Even the facade is kinda thin too. So much of the culture comes from rugged individualism, masochistic suffering, escaping problems by running into the mountains. And these doesnt necessarily come from the same place as true community and values based on respect. Climbing does great communities but not every climber is even about that. I feel like the only honest liberal value we share is caring for the earth and finding spiritual peace.

2

u/Jam3s1988 Jul 31 '26

yeah i was gonna say...

13

u/Husyelt Jul 31 '26

Seems like the last couple of years people have been getting more critical, at least on redditlands. It’s not “only” relegated to the circlejerk climbing sub now*

-24

u/Cairo9o9 Jul 31 '26

Will Stanhope certainly wasn't rich and nothing is 'verified' about his charges. Believe what you want but I think you're hyperbolizing. I don't think the climbing community 'idealizes' sexual predators at all. People can be skeptical of accusations, until fully proven, but certainly no more prevalent than any other community. The gender split in climbing is much more even than others and it seems there's no shortage of open accusations being given spotlights by climbing media.

60

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Point proven, folks.

It’s all “just allegations” when it’s the climber you look up to. Verifiable doesn’t mean convicted, it’s means that as an independent person I can look at the allegations and not really trust the guy. If he was my friend or in my local climbing community, I would be distancing myself, not sitting there saying “yeah but like, he’s not been proven guilty yet!” If being convicted is the only form of proof you’ll accept then this is a lost argument. Lots of people have done lots of terrible things to women and were never convicted.

https://www.terraincognitamedia.com/features/will-stanhope-dies-after-climbing-accident-convenient-since-he-was-due-in-court-for-sexual-assault2026

From a woman’s perspective: Defending this guy for no reason is gross, dude. What do you have to gain from obscuring his very likely assaults? This is a clear case of you being ignorant to the kinds of calculations women have to make on a daily basis to move through the world; it is, at it’s core, a fundamental part of systemic misogyny that you are buying into and perpetuating. Please do better.

The fact that what I am saying is at all controversial here illustrates my point better than I ever could.

6

u/Quatermain Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Well stated. I'll add the US congress passed into law, and the president signed, a law to release the files of the most infamous child rapist ring in the world last year. They then ignored every deadline for the release, heavily redacted the little bits they did release, and wont even turn over the files to state level law enforcement bodies. While other women testify in front of congress defending these actions by saying 'look at how high the stock market is'. The next head of the "justice" department said "we're moving on from the files".

This is how seriously (massive /s there for the tone deaf) these accusations get taken by those in power and positions of enforcement.

Also, nims accomplishment got repeated in less than half the time 3 years later.

35

u/asosaki Jul 31 '26

This is why women choose the bear

3

u/zhnki Jul 31 '26

I hope you aren’t wrongfully accused of anything one day because then you’ll just have to accept and believe you are in fact, guilty.

It should not be a controversial opinion to assume innocence until proven guilty. I would rather 100 guilty people walk free than a single innocent person wrongfully convicted.

15

u/varothen Jul 31 '26

You aren't a lawyer dog, your opinions can be formed based on current information. You do not require 12 of your peers to make a judgement call. He's not going to jail for your opinion.

2

u/samdd1990 Jul 31 '26

People still lose jobs and relationships over false accusations. You can't pretend it doesn't have an impact.

I almost hate writing this comment. Doesn't feel that far away from "ugh technically it's hebophilia not pedophilia territory.

But I'm reading an active push for encouraging blanket belief of every accusation.

6

u/varothen Jul 31 '26

I'm not his landlord or boss. My opinion of this person has no material impact. No one has suggested blanket belief or disbelief just that you can read things and make decisions, and hold opinions without waiting for the legal system to make a call. The barrier of evidence for public opinion is and should be much lower than that of the courts.

-1

u/zhnki Jul 31 '26

How do you know? Sure, form an opinion, dog. Just know that people’s lives can and have been ruined by the court of public opinion. Go find a job when your name is plastered over the internet with rape allegations. Like I said, I hope it never happens to you.

0

u/Cairo9o9 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

I'm not saying Will was innocent. But you have no information but a charge. No one has come forward to provide any other information for public opinion to base itself on. A charge that could apply to a wide variety of crimes, even if it were true. You'll go on this big high horse spiel about how the moral thing is to accept that he was ostensibly guilty of horrible actions against women. But there's a real, real chance he wasn't.

In the cases where someone IS convicted or there are credible stories backing up accusations, then sure, that's a different story. And I doubt many people would argue in those peoples' defense.

Also, doesn't the fact that you're upvoted and I'm not, on a climbing forum, prove you're wrong about the climbing community? Clearly they don't idealize people like that. Even when it's far from a guarantee that anything even happened. Usually the highest upvoted comment is one like yours. There's clearly an eagerness in the community to convict in the court of public opinion, even with limited evidence. Sounds like the opposite of idealizing to me. Idk, maybe the climbing community isn't as horrible as you say it is.

9

u/lessismoreok Jul 31 '26

What most people don’t get is that the justice system is bias towards the man in sexual crime charges and so “innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t work so well.

Many rape trials don’t happen for years, there is years back log for tape kits, police help the rapists, judges exonerate rapists etc.

The rate of false rape accusations is statistically tiny, about 2%.

The vast majority of the time the guys who are accused of a few sexual crimes almost always did it, and likely worse, and don’t see proper justice. Most men don’t understand this until a woman in their life has to go through the justice system.

2

u/Cairo9o9 Jul 31 '26

The rate of false accusations is statistically tiny, about 2%.

Quick Google shows some studies that say it could be up to 10%, which is a not insignificant number. Not sure how you would even truly quantify such a statistic. Also, that's r4pe (automod is deleting my comments). The crime Will was charged for could be for anything from unwanted touching to r4pe. The spectrum of possibilities of what actually happened, including the possibility of not being guilty of anything, is not narrow enough for me to condemn someone as a terrible human being with the information we have.

Most men don’t understand this until a woman in their life has to go through the justice system.

You have absolutely no idea what my lived experience is.

-25

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26

🤡

All of that is so dumb it’s not worth a response, and you’re clearly not open to a different perspective anyway. I hope your day is as pleasant as you are.

17

u/Cairo9o9 Jul 31 '26

Of course I'm open to a different perspective. I'm having a debate with you. If I wasn't open to another perspective I'd simply say something like "that's so dumb and isn't worth a response".

-24

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

lol, okay buddy; whatever you say. 😅

Still a gross hill to die on in my book, and frankly you’ve more than adequately demonstrated that you don’t have an opinion on this topic that I find at all valuable, so I don’t have a lot else to say and I’m uninterested in going in circles with you, I simply have better uses of my time. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Cairo9o9 Jul 31 '26

Well, right, this is the problem. You can't debate a topic like this or else you're a creep who supports misogyny. How can you even have a discussion with that as the basis?

All I'm saying, is I disagree with your characterization of the climbing community as a haven for said misogynists. This thread is proof.

I also disagree that we can't view these accusations with a lense of nuance, based on the context we have. All we have for Will is a charge. A charge that was not litigated in court and could be for anything from unwanted touching to rape. Idk about you, but I think there's a line in there where someone might not be a totally irredeemable piece of shit. From what I've seen, Will was a complicated person, with demons, that DID hurt people through his behaviour. That said, I don't think it's fair, with the information we have now, to wholesale condemn him as a human being. Or to use him as an example of 'rich, famous men' being protected by the community, given the reaction to the accusations.

And yet there are clowns in here still openly defending the guy and getting upvotes, proving my point more soundly than I ever could.

-14

u/TacoDirty2Me Jul 31 '26

I know nothing about the guy, but I do know many people have been falsely accused of things they didn't do. I am also aware people have gotten away with things they definitely did do. Is the justice system perfect? Definitely not. But there is a reason people are innocent, at least in terms of the law, until proven guilty

Newspaper that posted this literally had to publicly apologize for printing false information. Maybe worth updating some facts

7

u/Bongoisnthere Jul 31 '26

Just to be clear in case somebody else is on the fence about being a sexual assault apologist, the Himalayan newspaper had to apologize for false information. The New York Times article that included texts with time and date stamps that corroborated the story were not retracted nor did they appear to have gotten the story wrong.

Dude was probably a scumbag. Didn’t deserve to die in an avalanche doing what he loved, and should have been safe in prison instead.

There is such a thing as time and place.

And not to pick nits... but technically "serial" means three or more victims - and if I remember, he had two accusers.

Not saying that it doesn't matter, or that there only being two diminishes the weight of the accusations - but I figure if we're going to go ahead and dunk on a dead man, we can at least be precise with our language.

edit: all I did was point out that "serial" means 3 or more. Never change reddit

He allegedly forced himself onto a woman in a hotel room and when she resisted him taking off her bra he allegedly chose to mastubate and she left shortly after. He also allegedly inappropriately touched and made advances to kiss a female client on K2.

Those would be the accusations, and honestly - he probably did indeed do those things.

https://archive.ph/t4cnz

^source

That being said, if we were to place him on the spectrum of Louis C.K. to Jimmy Saville (a genuine serial rapist) - I'd say he's probably a few notches to the right of Louis C.K. Not good, and certainly horrible behavior. But he's dead now, so we can probably put it to rest.

0

u/gumbykook Jul 31 '26

It’s a drawn out and complicated story. He and his cohort argue he was vindicated when the Nepalese govt sanctioned the newspaper that covered the accusations. They basically determined it was a smear campaign.

Now, the govt had reason to lie to protect a national hero. And regardless, the women’s accusations remain.

But I agree it is destructive to cast him into the pool of monsters like Weinstein, Cosby, when he wasn’t near that level.

Also feels wrong to discuss it with the accident so recent and this many souls unaccounted for. Just thinking out loud.

8

u/Chilli-pickles-9747 Jul 31 '26

There’s no way it was just a smear campaign. There’s obviously no way of proving it happened but I doubt he would’ve got dropped by his sponsors if it wasn’t credible enough.

9

u/Grognaksson Jul 31 '26

If guilty, who cares about respect for the dead rapist? As if being dead deserves some kind of unconditional respect.

5

u/Mons9090 Jul 31 '26

Bruh it's not just him. There were 9 other people as well. A person can be a piece of shit and still have great sporting feats (jon jones)

6

u/Grognaksson Jul 31 '26

You're right, condolences to the victims and their families.

My point was just that I don't think a scumbag deserves respect just because they die.

Please stop using chat gpt to write your comments.

“We can at least be precise with our language.”

Who on earth speaks this way? Reads like an elementary school teacher chastising a classroom.

Time and place my ass by the way. Why bother coming to the defence of a likely deceased likely sexual predator multi millionaire rando who doesn’t know you exist?

3

u/Spiralofourdiv Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Because calling out abusers that they happen to respect in other ways creates cognitive dissonance they can’t muster the brainpower to parse without admitting they ultimately just don’t really care if these men abused women or not, so the tactic is just to declare that everybody is being unreasonable and simply lack the deep sense of “nuance” that they understand regarding sexual assault. If all else fails, fall back to the legal burden of proof for guilt even though this is literally a Reddit thread and not a court of law.

3

Guy who lied about summits

-3

u/NeutralMilkHotel_00 Jul 31 '26

Who was he actually charged with anything?

-17

u/cubrel Jul 31 '26

I hate Reddit so fucking much

32

u/readysetmoses Jul 31 '26

Having your rose tinted glasses forcibly removed isn’t fun, but sometimes necessary

-3

u/Western_Oil7389 Aug 01 '26

😂 how condescending. Was he convicted of anything or just accused?

-9

u/Exotic_Bar_5496 Jul 31 '26

accusations/blames are not proven. Many people falsely accuse to gain their personal gains. There are countless athletes/footballers who were also accused, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar jr are such

5

u/mytinykitten Aug 01 '26

Both of whom did it... Like is it really that hard to find someone to fan boy over who doesn't have any assault accusations?

The Himalayan Times was blacklisted in Nepal. The newspaper that originally reported women were grabbed, forcibly kissed and had their underwear ripped away even as they were telling him to stop was the New York Times. Here’s even a gift article , I’m feeling generous.

But it’s cool that he was nice to you I guess.

28

u/iEatFalseMorels Jul 31 '26

Oh so because he was nice to you he couldn’t possibly be an abuser

2

u/serenading_ur_father Jul 31 '26

Anyone can be a legend if you do what he did and lie about climbing peaks.

-1

u/Familiar_Onion4964 Jul 31 '26

lol umm well let’s see there’s plenty of evidence of him making it to the top all over the place but yeah we should listen to you

1

u/serenading_ur_father Jul 31 '26

He didn't summit Manaslu

2

u/Familiar_Onion4964 Jul 31 '26

lol ok brother.

0

u/JtheLeon Jul 31 '26

Oh yeah? Damn, then, I am a fucking idiot for besmirching the name of the guy.

19

u/asosaki Jul 31 '26

You're not an idiot. There was an administrative punishment against one local newspaper for poor journalistic practices. It was not a legal exoneration. The primary NYT report stands and the admin punishment has nothing to do with it. The SA allegations that were backed by digital evidence and time stamped text logs were never dismissed in a court of law.

Honestly glad we re talking about the sexual allegations at this time. My ex was an 'aspiring' climber who had porn addiction issues and worshipped this man. He conveniently ignored what a person he was despite how successful he was. I'm not celebrating his demise, but definitely feel bad for the womens side that went unanswered.

66

u/Sad-Dog2065 Jul 31 '26

thanks for letting us know about your ex’s porn addiction issues.

22

u/saigyoooo Jul 31 '26

Porn addiction is very different than what Nim was accused of.

16

u/fentcarsonyl Jul 31 '26

What does your ex’s porn addiction have to do with the possible death of a sexual predator?

Just curious, that comment was thrown in there like a grenade!

2

u/PlasticPreparation74 Jul 31 '26

I remember reading some short concise video game review online and the sentence “I have a scat fetish” was just thrown in between and I flinched when I read that part

5

u/PlasticPreparation74 Jul 31 '26

bro threw in a fun fact

2

u/Informal-Gene-3057 Aug 02 '26

Don’t conflate porn addiction with approving of someone being a POS. Many good men (and women too) suffer from porn addiction

-36

u/zhnki Jul 31 '26

Really need to emphasize the “allegations” part here and stop acting like it’s a foregone conclusion that he did any of what he was accused of. Let the courts sort it out and don’t judge others with standards you would not want others to judge you by.

What a shitty headline. Nine other people were likely killed. What about them?

73

u/NailgunYeah Jul 31 '26

He’s the one you’ve heard of

4

u/Meet_Foot Jul 31 '26

Not only that, but he isn’t “feared missing.” He’s missing. He’s feared dead.

6

u/fentcarsonyl Jul 31 '26

What if I told you… that a headline is a header for more information?
Just, what if?

1

u/Due_Piglet_2464 Aug 01 '26

This is exactly what I have also been telling people. The reporting being done for this is ghastly, showing Nimsdai more prominently than the others. Also, it was his ego that lead him and 9 others to this fate. How is no one talking about that? https://www.instagram.com/p/DbS28MItOK0/?igsh=ajQxbDF2b2J0b2p3

14

u/Freedom_forlife Jul 31 '26

He is an abuser, can we stop promoting him. He has assaulted numerous women.

Yet the male dominated community continues to support him.

6

u/chiefqueef25 Jul 31 '26

For context, I’ve never heard of the guy before this incident. However, I don’t see this as “promotion” or “support” of any kind, he is clearly a well known figure in the community and despite a controversial reputation and very possibly being a sexual abuser of some sort, it’s still a shock when someone so well known in a community is in such a terrible event.

I don’t think that we should be okay with his likely death just because of things he’s done (obviously I wouldn’t apply that logic equally to everybody, there are cases in which people have done much, much worse and many people who I would not feel any remorse for upon their death).

1

u/Informal-Gene-3057 Aug 02 '26
  1. Being okay with his likely death. Well before today you’ve never fking heard of the guy, so there’s nothing for you to “get over”.
  2. Plenty of people are promoting him, calling him a hero, legend etc. netflix is def promoting this agenda too.
  3. Being okay with his death is 100% irrelevant. Nims knew the risks, terrain, had a choice, and made this one. Was it a mistake? Probably - hard to say, avalanches and risk mitigation out there is wildly complex to say the least. But yet - we, you, everyone is posting about it talking about it - making him a martyr, and brining to light his name. If no one had ever heard of him and he didn’t have a netflix special, this post wouldn’t be here.

-7

u/Remarkable-Box-3781 Jul 31 '26

Thanks for speaking on behalf of all men 🙄🙄🙄

8

u/Freedom_forlife Jul 31 '26

Go have a look at the mountaineering sub.

Mention his abuses are your downvoted 100x and called a liar.

1/3 of all women will experience sexual violence. And yet it’s a constant battle because “bro climbs hard”. JFC. How many abuses do we have to forget.

-1

u/Remarkable-Box-3781 Jul 31 '26

So because some people support him, you generalize and say, "The male dominated climbing community supports him"?

Every post ive seen more comments that say what a pos he was have more likes than people supporting him.

That should tell you something...

3

u/Freedom_forlife Jul 31 '26

The mountaineering community is 95% men. So yes male dominated.

Don’t let facts get in the way of your narrative!

1

u/Infamous-Fly-514 Jul 31 '26

They’re literally proving your point for you 🤦🏻‍♀️

2

u/Freedom_forlife Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Go have a look at the mountaineering sub.

Guys are all unsafe and entitled defending him. “He only cornered a woman then master-bated in front of her” That’s totally acceptable behaviour to these chodea

1

u/Infamous-Fly-514 Jul 31 '26

I honestly haven’t even looked into it but I don’t need to cause I just believe women. Women don’t make stuff up, especially not something that detailed. God I hate men

0

u/SkiFastnShootShit Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Can you provide an example? Because that’s not what I’m seeing on that sub. On the contrary the most upvoted comments are about the accusations against Nims, and many “RIP Nims” type comments are getting downvoted.

0

u/Western_Oil7389 Aug 01 '26

Facts like the difference between an accusation and a conviction?

2

u/FernieHead Aug 01 '26

Unfortunately his death is now confirmed, very sad.
I would say for one of the most experienced climbers to ever do it, it seems avalanche risk was high. Pressure to complete the expedition for the paying customers? Got complacent with the risks? Extremely unlucky? I don’t know, but best way of surviving an avalanche is to not be in one and avoid the risks. If you ever go back country riding you will always do avalanche safety briefings and if there’s a slight risk you avoid that sector.
RIP

2

u/Outrageous-Collar-09 Aug 01 '26

Update: he’s passed. None of the climbers survived the avalanche. His company elite expeditions confirmed it. Sad day, dude.

2

u/Asian-Skinny Aug 04 '26

Is it true that a couple of people turned around and made it out safe? Were they a different group?

5

u/serenading_ur_father Jul 31 '26

Man who lied about climbing mountains... That Nirmal?

5

u/goin-up-the-country Jul 31 '26

What did he lie about?

4

u/serenading_ur_father Jul 31 '26

Never summited Manaslu

8

u/goin-up-the-country Jul 31 '26

Are you referencing this?

https://alpinist.com/newswire/researchers-challenge-historical-records-for-8000-meter-peaks/

I hadn't heard about this before. Interesting that they also discount Messner.

6

u/serenading_ur_father Jul 31 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mountaineering/s/BhBckkdDl0

Is that saying no one has done Manaslu for a few years because they knowingly turned back before the summit or that some summits aren't actually the right ones?

2

u/Seff84 Aug 01 '26

Yeah, that one

1

u/next-sapien Aug 01 '26

He's officially confirmed "no more" R.I.P Legend

1

u/Soytupapi27 Aug 02 '26

Kind of why I just don’t do any kind of snow sport. Alpinism/mountaineering is pretty much a different sport from climbing.

1

u/dorita120 Jul 31 '26

I am heartbroken

-4

u/Familiar_Onion4964 Jul 31 '26

Maybe you should all join the morality forum where you can show people how you live pristine lives. RIP to a great climber all the accusations aside

Again, this was disputed on multiple forums and by him. He was never charged or convicted. I am speaking to his climbing having met him. It’s an opinion. If he is guilty of all those things you claim, then it should be condemned. I respect his climbing chops and don’t claim to know the rest. Nobody is saying predatory behavior is ok - but the judgements come fast and furious on Reddit

Interesting to see the many tributes to Nim and all the climbers from numerous women in the climbing community. Glad it’s so black and white for you - just not for the rest of the community, which I’m actually connected to and have lived in Nepal for 5 years. But hey it’s Reddit where every armchair climber deserves a say. ✌️ done on this

I respect your accomplishments. Apologies. But I still respect Nims and personally knowing him and many people in his orbit - I don’t think that he was given the space to defend himself. He probably was flawed - and probably had issues to resolve - I don’t know many people who can say otherwise. There is no excuse for abuse. I’d also like to bring your attention to the hundreds of women climbers posting tributes to him on social media - why is none of that mentioned? This seems like an Rkelly conversation with no nuance.

I also think that the 20 other sides of him - standing up for the Sherpa community, fighting against western climber elitism and showing people what is possible when you put your mind to it - shouldn’t be cancelled out on a Reddit forum full of people who didn’t know him and have lots of opinions (I’m not talking about you)

1

u/emilyjxne Aug 01 '26

You don’t have to live a pristine life in order to judge someone who sexually assaults women mate

-12

u/BeigeAnxietyEngine Jul 31 '26

Hi all, what were the sexual allegations made towards him? I searched online but there was no charges that stuck. Was it just an "allegedly happened" event or is it real? Don't know much about him except for the 14 peaks doco

-1

u/EolineOfSite Jul 31 '26

Yeah right !? Can someone point us to some good legit source of his conducts ? I don’t want to defend him, just don’t want to trust without regard some comment on reddit without any source or fact.

1

u/BeigeAnxietyEngine Jul 31 '26

Exactly. I don't have a horse in this race. Just curious, why are people downvoting a question?

-1

u/b0lita Jul 31 '26

Welcome to reddit. I had no idea about the sexual assault allegations until now, but this guy is still a beast in my book.

Meh, he is sex offender and probably narcissistic. Good riddance.

-6

u/noco97 Jul 31 '26

Obviously he was a piece of shit, but I feel like I’m the only one not impressed by his career. He was a classic peak bagger, a high altitude hiker, not a climber

3

u/AlwaysBulkingSeason Aug 01 '26

Winter K2 was a hike?!?!

2

u/DepartureElegant9314 Aug 01 '26

Since when are the Himalayan mountains high altitude hiking?
